As I may have alluded to before, doing press and interviews isn't usually the bit about being a musician or creative that anyone enjoys. This is not to say that there are not some incredible journalists and writers out there, but there are also a lot of unpleasant ones. Let's see if these artists were right to walk out on these interviews - you tell me in the comments which ones were!

Yes! I am so glad someone has picked up on the inner rage of Brian May, something I've long suspected. He's a very controlled man, and I think in a band argument he'd be a master of passive aggression.

With all due respect, which translates to no respect at all, WTF does that mean?
@wellesradio
@wellesradio 2 жыл бұрын
@@blindeddy2220 It means that while Brian May is very polite, underneath he really is angry about a lot of the things happening in the world and he’s not all peaches and cream. When he writes about war, the ecology, life, death, or many issues dear to his heart, including his own band’s legacy, he is very short on temper and doesn’t view humanity generously. He gets along with people on a one on one basis for the most part and always shows good manners, but philosophically he is not an optimist and he has a moral code that he strives to align with while questioning and being in conflict with it. Terry Pratchett was much the same way. Everyone who met him for brief moments said, “What a lovely, jolly man,” but his closest friends knew he was often angry about many things having to do with injustice and ignorance.
@blindeddy2220
@blindeddy2220 2 жыл бұрын
@@wellesradio Hi W, please read the comment to which I replied. Your response doesn't address the topic at hand. Yes, everyone gets angry - we're all human. Sometimes our anger is justified. Sometimes it's not. Some of us exhibit that anger explicitly and some are passive aggressive. I don't personally know Brian May and neither do you (or Terry Pratchett, for that matter). How either would react during a fight with close associates (eg. a band argument - as mentioned in said comment) is unknowable without the intimate knowledge that neither of us, nor the original commentator, enjoys. Cheers.

And, yes, I knew who Terry Pratchett was without looking him up. I've read many of his books.
@wellesradio
@wellesradio 2 жыл бұрын
@@blindeddy2220 The Terry Pratchett thing is based on an interview and later an article Neil Gaiman wrote specifically on the subject of Pratchett’s anger. The May stuff is based on having been reading his blogs for years as well, listening to his music, and as evidenced here from the mouths of people who know him personally. It’s a righteous anger, and it fuels his drive. Btw, I had read the original comment. I came to this thread because of that original comment. I only responded to you because you asked what was meant by May’s “anger”. Looking back at it, now you were quite disrespectful to OP for absolutely no reason.

I walk out of interviews when they bring out the multiple choice personality test. I lie like a rug on those and I've never passed a single one. So if that comes up, I say, "This interview is over. Thanks for wasting both of our time." I actually filled out one of those things at PetCo and it said based on my answers they would be able to tell if I was lying and then it would tell other test people if I did so. I filled it out with all lies, said "cool", and thanked them in my mind for helping me stay unemployed. I'm unemployed right now. Life is wonderful.

I was a freelance music journalist for a few years and I always tried to come up with questions that I knew they hadn't been asked a million times by watching a bunch of interviews with them on KZfaq and in print. I had the fortunate chance of getting to choose which musicians and bands I interviewed so obviously the fact that I respected them all already helped matters, but I would NEVER go into an interview with the intent of trying to mock or bring someone down. Being a music journalist is partly about trying to find a neutral ground or find things you admire about the way an artist creates their music, even if it's not something you are a fan of personally. That being said; there's no doubt that there are a lot of (albeit much bigger names) journalists who are definitely out for blood and just looking to create drama when they do interviews. Truth be told, I was absolutely terrified to speak to all of these musicians I interviewed yet didn't want to sound like another little fan boy so had to find my composure.

The radio show The Darkness walked out of was called Loveline with Dr Drew and Adam Carolla. As a fan of the show, you had to be somewhat familiar with the concept to understand it - they made fun of callers who deserved it, but seriously tried to help anyone who was genuinely in trouble. The latter were the majority, and they helped A LOT of people along the way.

@terry7441
@terry7441 Жыл бұрын
@@icarogois7116 The show is actually meticulously archived online and you can find it online if you search for it. But this story requires context. Loveline was fascinating because of how often it went off the rails, not just with calls but with guests trashing the studio, etc. It was a well-intentioned show to help mixed up kids, with a doctor and a comedian. They used comedy to make the show entertaining but also to disarm distressed callers. Whether or not that's appropriate or helpful is a different conversation. That particular episode was infamous among fans not just because the guests walked out, but because the calls were particularly heavy off the bat. A 15-year old girl suffering bulimia was followed up by another who was raped at nine-years old. The comedy host was being pretty glib for each call, was talking over the caller and comes off pretty bad. I think anyone who hadn't known those kinds of calls might come up -- let alone at the start of the program and one after the other -- would think they stepped into a bad situation.

I used to do a bit of the ol' music journo stuff in the 2010's and although I can't remember much of when I was interviewing artists I would always make sure to make the session worth it for them. Always ask questions about their new project/album, ask them how the tour is coming along and if there are bands they are looking forward to sharing a stage with, go through the last album and talk about songs that might hold a special place in their heart, that sort of stuff. I remember getting a sit down with Wes Borland when he toured the UK as Black Light Burns and made sure to focus on said band and only bring up Limp Bizkit if the question was relevant. ie: how touring this time around was different to the LB days and if there were things he liked more or less this time around. We got a chuckle when talking about showering and space to get ready, he was really nice. I even managed to get exclusives out of the likes of richard patrick (Filter) and Mortiis by going off the beaten track just by asking about something that a hardcore fan would ask ("how did you get the nickname Piggy when performing with NIN? I love the art cover style for your album 'The Grudge', it reminds me of Enigma. ETC.) Music Journo's, always do your homework. Don't be a dick and fall on bland questions that will bore the pants off your subject!

Definitely the Bee Gees. Clive Anderson was obnoxious, disrespectful and didn't have a clue about the Bee Gees impressive catalogue. Glad you have this channel and people are discovering The Darkness - the most underrated rock band out there.

The whole premise of Clive Anderson's show was light hearted jokes at the expense of the guests. The vast majority of which were aware of and happily went along with. One of the best Peter Cook interviews is the one he did on Clive's show. Possibly the bee gees management failed to do their research before booking them on it. Perhaps Justin is unaware of this (although if he watched anything more than this one clip he's really presented it out of context in a disingenuous way - I'll give him the benefit of the doubt) It's a bit like if you go on Graham Norton's chat show you know he wants some smutty or puerile story or he'll bring out some sex toys - something of that nature. Or Jonathan Ross who always ribs his guests. Don't want that? Well, don't go on the show. The Bee Gees just lacked a sense of humour because of their egos - or at least 2 of them did. You'll note the guy who stood up first was angrily blaming and threatening hospital staff when one of his brother's died as though somehow the bee gees were too important to die or something. I think the most laughable part of this video is Justin saying that musicians don't want to do interviews. What a crock. The single motivating factor for most pop and rock stars is fame. If Justin's motivation is playing music and being creative why, instead of creating a youtube channel that's musical and creative does he sit blathering his opinions? It's a laughable lack of self awareness again. More so that significant numbers of these videos consist of giving opinions on other musicians without interviewing or speaking to them. It's a bit laughable criticising journalism when you're making such a hatchet job of it yourself. What could be worse than a bad interview? The guy trying to leech off your fame by talking about you for youtube views using clickbait titles. Especially when that guy has delusions of grandeur as though his opinions on music are informed because of 15 minutes of fame he got from a twenty year old song. I mean is the world of music missing the views of the guy who sang kung foo fighting or 'turning japanese'? That's about the level of knowledge being expressed. The truth is, most of these people love to talk about themselves, what they dislike is when they aren't in control of the narrative. Especially if their negative behaviours are made public. You'll note Brian May's lockdown output didn't consist of him believing the world was awaiting his views (excepting specific campaigns he takes issue with like foxes or badgers or whatever) and consisted of him playing the guitar - you know, like he's a musician. He did come across as a bit needy I think - as though a couple of weeks without huge crowds chanting his name every night and he was getting withdrawal effects and had to seek out a crowd online. Why not sit and watch TV with Angie or play the guitar to yourself? I don't understand at all the need to be seen by a crowd to the point where you can't handle 2 weeks lockdown without one. You'll note most of his channel output now lockdown is over is him taking pictures of huge crowds of people chanting his name. But, you can forgive him that because he's experienced this ridiculous level of fame for decades - and seems clearly addicted to it.

Absolutely nothing to do with this video but I have noticed a number of times in the past you have mentioned The Pixies and that a number of songs have used similar chords. As a fan of their music I would love to hear your top 5 pixies songs.

On Brian May, I saw him angry once in Toronto in 1978 on their News of the World Tour. I was right in front of him at the barrier at the front of the stage. He shook his fist at a roadie for making a mistake with the guitar - not tuned - handed to him too late or something- not sure what it was. But he was smiling a moment later and put on a great show. I think that was the last time he was angry.
