Hi guys, the blue boats with KNRM on them are NOT from the coast guard but from the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution, Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij, abbreviated: KNRM)
@user-cx5ni7me6l

(For the non dutchies) Special and strange about the KNRM is that its totally private funded by individuals and companies donating. Still don't know the reason for this, but its a fun fact :) (or does the kustwacht/coastguard pays them also? Does someone know this?)

I remembering being in den Helder in August 1967 after going into harbour having been running downwind in a storm for three days on the North Sea and the crew looking for rest. We were sailing on a 40 ft wooden yacht bound for England. I left the boat in den Helder returning to my native Sweden to continue my high school. I now live in Canada and sail the North Channel in Lake Huron. Enjoy watching your sailing adventure.

AS a US Navy Submariner I appreciated your walk through of the nicely kept Netherlands submarine. In hte torpedo Room there would have been more torpedoes then you saw. The bunks were probably just above each torpedo. The crew size of 70 sounds about right. The crew was probably divided into 3 sections and 1/3 of the crew would be on duty, 1/3 of the crew would be asleep and the other third would be engaged in other work. It is very calm and still submerged unlike it can be on the surface. I liked going to sea and diving and settling into a normal routine.

30 years in the submarine force: fresh air, seasons, and sunshine, all not required. Of course, those are nuclear powered submarines, with plenty of A/C and fresh water, but not any more space. Nice video! Just found your channel and your style is awesome. Looking forward to starting from the beginning.

I retired from the US Submarine Force as a Senior Chief Radioman in 1993, my last boat was the USS Henry M. JACKSON, SSBN 730 Gold crew out of Bangor, Washington! It was the best way to serve my country! I would do it all over again. Even with all the challenges and hard work! My longest patrol submerged is 120 days! Running on the Surface was a great time! I really enjoy you two and your adventures! Fair winds and following seas.

Retired aa a CPO after 16yrs in RN as a Reactor Panel Operator. Much bigger than that thing. Many more people as well as Polaris Missile Launch tubes. Just as packed, with equipment, just as enclosed and short of space esp. where we worked, in the Propulsion Spaces. Much quieter than that, they were playing recordings for you from Sonar, to illustrate. Can't see a thing, good charts tell you where you are or should be. Periscopes no good dived except if you come shallow for some reason, so they are almost never used, unless attacking with torpedoes or surfacing, to check for Sonar blind spots caused by layers of cold water which reflect sound and hide ships etc. from the Sonar. We were at sea for anything up to three months, although 10 weeks was more normal. Surprisingly comfortable life and in some ways I still miss it.

Thank you again for a great video! I've seen the submarine many times from the road while driving to the ferry to Texel but never got around to visiting it. We did visit the Reddingsmuseum just next to it. Did you know that the organization responsible for rescue at sea in the Netherlands (KNRM, which is separate from the Dutch Coast Guard) is a charity organization that is completely run by volunteers and funded by donations from the public and businesses (like the RNLI in the UK)?

My wife and I were able to take a short tour on a tourist sub in St. Marten. It was very different. As a scuba diver, it wasn't my first time down to 100'. The only thing I was disappointed in was that there were no lights on the outside, so all the coral and fish where that shade of blue.

I'm also US Navy retired After 32 years! Serving on board three nuclear powered submarines! I wholeheartedly disagree with you! 70days? Ha that was a breeze, my longest submerged voyage was 138 days from submerging until we surfaced! With a crew of 250+ officers and crew, I would never step foot on a "target" as we called the skimmers! But I must admit, that I showered daily, unlike most of the crew! I found this Submarine strangely odd! "Being on the hard"! Even in "dry" dock! Our boats were never actually on the hard! I have been to the depths most would never fathom! But have become aware of as I age having a fear of heights! Kind of crazy! That boat definitely predates my career! But watching this vlog, I felt as if I could smell the nautical atmosphere of the city! Besides once your more that 20 fathoms below the surface it feels like your tied to the pier! Once my mother asked if we had screen doors on the Submarine 😳🤣😂🤣😉

It was nice seeing Den Helder again. I had my training as a naval reserve officer at the naval academy there. We considered Den Helder a very uninteresting city, mainly inhabited by naval people. The maritime museum was very much smaller then. If you enjoy miniature ship models, you should come to Hamburg and visit the gigantic maritime museum there.

Outstanding episode, again. What a place to be totally “submerged” in ships, boats, and such. And to have it all to yourselves too! The shots of the somewhat deserted town on the water in low light conditions test your film making skills, which are great! The sub tour was engaging. A veritable maritime extravaganza! The violin piece so special, especially your facial expressions! Seldom do you reveal what must be the usual challenges of partners living and working together all the time. At the beginning of this episode your remark to your partner that he still was in his sweats was priceless. Your voices are an important part of the sound track! Thanks again. Thank you for a very uplifting video, we haven't been in the best of spirits this week, we received word that one of our favorite KZfaq Van Life stars, and sailing enthusiast and a personal friend of ours, Lee MacMillan took her own life this past weekend in Santa Barbara, California but she's from Ontario. She was only 28 years old. She was very famous on KZfaq as part of the Max & Lee Van Life Travels channel and she had a huge following on Instagram. Max & Lee traveled all over the world by van and boat and they did several sailing adventures with us from Florida to the Bahamas on our Privilege 615 catamaran. They seemed so happy together but sadly they broke up in 2019. She really struggled with the break-up but went on to start her own KZfaq channel and it was becoming very popular, she was always bubbly and had an outgoing personality in front of the camera, but Lee had a dark side to her, she was struggling with depression, anxiety, and had thoughts of suicide quite often. It didn't help that she was constantly being bullied and threatened on her KZfaq channel and maybe this weighed in on her committing suicide. She well truly be missed, she was the brightest star, a magnetic force of nature and was loved by so so many.

I hadn’t heard until this comment - this is devastating, wow. I watched max and Lee, and later watched Lee appear on Eamon and Bec’s channel many times. In the strange way one can feel like one knows a KZfaqr, I did feel like I knew her. What a tragic event, and such a stark reminder that you can’t know what goes on behind a screen or behind a smiling face. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, this is truly tragic and I wish you a lot of strength in processing this as well. -Maya

Well, all your videos are so good, especially with Maya's style of narrating the stories, but this video was even better because I enjoy looking at ships in museums too, especially submarines. Oh and Maya, that town in Western Australia that ship ended up in, is called Geraldton and said as though the G is a J. It's in the midwest or what is called The Batavia Coast because not far off the coast of Geraldton (approx 60km), is the wreck of the Batavia.

:-) I served aboard a 1960's US Navy ballistic missile submarine. They were much larger in diameter and had two decks through out most of the boat. It was much more roomy than WWII boats. The one patrol I went on we were submerged for 70 days. 110 officers & crew. Patrols were very BORING ... glad I did it but wouldn't do it again. If I were to do it again I'd want to serve on a Fast Attack boat. In San Diego there's a Russian submarine of the same era that was more archaic than the one you guys tours.

That was a fascinating tour of the Dan Helder docklands and the submarine tour was a class act! Well done! I have long held a great interest in Dutch boats in general but esp. Dutch working boats. eg. trawlers. I think a trawler would convert into a great bluewater cruiser and one with loads of style and character, both qualities I value highly, even to the extent of sacrificing some practical advantages. I love Magic Carpet for those qualities! Thank you for another great video!

Thank you for this interesting journey. I appreciate the way you visited this submarine with respect and discretion. Not touching everything despite you had a free access to almost the entire ship. This illustrates your state of mind and I do like that. That is not si common in today's silly selfish world.

As a youngster I remember touring a submarine at Mayport Navel Station in Jasonville Florida. Being an impetuous youth, I had to jump and mash that red "Fire" button to launch the torpedo. The crew guiding us Boy Scouts, of course, pretended I had just destroyed the bridge over the St. Johns river but, I can tell you with some confidence, it escaped unscathed. Maya, I suspect that an airplane lands much easier than a submarine surfaces... more controls ;-) Thank you both so much for sharing this tour.

A wow episode!!! About the submarine, the Tonijn was constructed with three cilinders one on the top for the crew and the two below for the engines and batteries. Due to this construction in those days it could dive deeper than all other submarines.

yup, and even more importantly be constructed in sections at smaller shipyards that didn't have the equipment to weld the large diameter pressure hulls that would otherwise be needed.
