Fantastic video. I didn’t even suspect that I might be autistic until I was over 60. I recorded zero social skills on an on-line test. Yes, I know they aren’t reliable….. but my journey then started. I have “learnt” the social skills to now look people in the eye, listen (very hard to do) rather than talk, engage in small talk (which I hate) etc. I now embrace my gifts from being autistic- enjoying my own company and pursuits, having a great memory and love for interpreting graphs, being a pet whisperer, being able to intensely focus on things, etc. I feel that I am finally living my best version of myself….. finally. I hope everyone can improve on their current challenges over time.❤

Unfortunately, could not watch the show here in America, but have seen it in England. Chris was my favorite presenter and I always enjoyed his segments of the program most, and looked forward to when the camera switched over to him. My daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's at ten and so I can imagine what he must of gone through as child. She is 26 now and wouldn't change herself either, despite the struggles she's gone through. 'Aspies' have a unique perspective on the world and the world needs to change to accommodate them, not the other way round.I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the line we began trying to intimidate people to conform to our cultural or societal ideal of "normal". How boring would the world be if everyone was exactly the same?Chris, although I commiserate with your struggles, you're perfect just the way you are.

I am autistic and I want to be cured. I am jealous of people that think of their autism as a “gift”. Mine doesn’t benefit me whatsoever - it has left me so excluded and alienated that I have developed other mental illnesses and it has taken my life away from me. I could do so much more with my life if I could socialise, if I could form any sort of bond with people, but no matter what I distance myself away from everyone and I’m always on the side. It’s like I am in a foggy bubble which is a magnet that repels all human magnets. Even if I try to get close, I just cant. It’s so frustrating and agonising. I try so desperately hard to fit in only to get told to “be myself” but if I am “myself” (and god knows who that is), I am asked by the same people, “why don’t you at least try to fit in!” My emotions run rampage, I feel like I am on the outside of the world looking in but not really part of it, always trapped in my own mind. It affects my learning ability too so I cannot achieve the things I want and i have been emotionally abused and manipulated by my parents (maybe they didnt intend to) because they don’t understand. I’ve had such extreme meltdowns that I’ve traumatised myself and my family. I honestly feel like my creation was a mistake. I have attended group autism sessions but tbh I cant even relate to the fellow autistics because my autism is atypical. I wish I could be cured and it makes me so angry when fellow autistics fight against cure research and medical treatments saying it’s “prejudiced” and “autism doesn’t need to be fixed” or whatever. If you don’t want it, don’t get treatment but you don’t have to stop people who do want it from getting it, I still think treatment and cures should be advocated. I am in so much pain.

Find a way to express your feelings, music, art, poetry. Give it a go. Read a book called the Charisma Myth and Dale Carnegie. Look into yourself for everything you are led to believe you have to get from others. Try shadow work questions and some inner child bonding work. Lots of love to you. Alot of us think this, go through it and come into the light and make your life work. Lead you life with love as often as you can, not fear. All the best 💖🙏

But is it really the Asperger’s per se that has caused you these issues, or society’s lack of acceptance of any deviations from the perceived normal? Because believe me, being surrounded by the right people (in particular with regard to employers) makes a huge difference - I know because I was pushed to the point of hating my inadequacies so much that I tried to commit suicide; and more than once. But now I’m happy again, I have formed new relationships, I have new colleagues and I am very successful at work. And this is all because I’ve found people who are willing to accept me as I am, autism and all.

Well...I cannot compare my situation to yours because of our different genders and family situations (although we are the same age). Despite your intelligence, I'm not surprised you struggled in school because people with Asperger's have trouble with liberal arts subjects (i.e., English, foreign languages, Reading Comprehension, etc.) and having social problems will negatively affect performance. I wish I had answers for you, but I don't because I can't even figure out my problems. Thankfully, more people are becoming aware of Asperger's, which should help people like us, but it will take some time to notice changes in society.

Do you have an interest? It's likely you would be very talented at something you are interested in. If you do, check out YT for more info and what others are doing in that subject. You'll have more ideas. Whatever we are personally good at is actually in demand. What we struggle with is trying to fit into 'normal' jobs with other people around us. That becomes more about coping with their illogical oddities. It's them not you.

I am here because just recently, I have had people say to me that I remind them of Chris Packham in the way I come across. This is all part of a bigger picture because several months ago during a meeting at work, it was suggested to me that I may have autism due to the way I react to certain situations and could relate to a particular video shown to the group. When I mentioned this to my Mother, she revealed that (unbeknown to me) during my teens, it was suggested by our family counsellor that I was on the autism spectrum, but I was never tested. Now, at the age of 33, I am in the process of arranging a test through my GP and perhaps once and for all, I will have clinical validation of why I am the way I am, and why I'll never be like everyone else. However, with 33 years of learning to embrace my quirks, why would I want to 'cure' them?

I think she's either lying or not know that autism is a spectrum. Thinking back in my life, I just want to say that the chance that I'm not autistic is almost 0. We need to be aware of this because failing to do so may lead to some mental illness and other wrong diagnosis.

I have autism, adhd, bipolar, and bad pmdd. it gives me great gifts but all of those combined means my life is far harder and I cannot do anything with them as far as sustained effort in one direction, plus my social challenges just make it hard to network to find success. I can pass tho, and have even been fairly well liked and popular apparently, which I never really understood for not reading people (I didn't realize I was liked, other people told me this). A lot has to do with being overtly quirky and off the wall - the bipolar AND ADHD really mask a lot of the ASD stuff, but as I age ASD is much more prominent. Got diagnosed at 44. Dad has aspergers. The sensory challenges are an absolute nightmare. For those alone, I'd rather be normal, sorry.

I totally understand Chris's dichotomy here. On the one hand I marvel at modern technology and just how much it can do, and yet there is also something quite disturbing about going around zapping brains trying to "cure" people who aren't neurotypical rather than supporting them and helping the people around them to become more aware. That doesn't feel like progress to me, at least on a social/humanitarian level.

Merry Christmas as I write this. If a higher effective treatment was offered and it was under assessment in an RCT - like what Lindsay Oberman was doing in this video, or NICE/FDA approved, too right I would be in favor of it. It would also be financial, time, labour, and life economical (either for public health, insurance companies, or independently) because the person would come off services associated with Autism if they become non-spectrum diagnosable. Of course I embrace diversity, but I am concerned about the economical side of having Autism. I really hope that in the next 10 to 15 years that there may be more very positive minimal risk of bias RCT's on a 3 to 4 times more effective and economical Autism treatment (like Transcranial Stimulations) especially done on children and as long as they have minimal side effects, so that it could possibly get FDA or NICE approval.

I don't really care for a lot of my autistic traits, but there are pluses. People drain me, and simple social interactions like saying hi and bye are stupidly hard. Well at least I'm in a physics department where autism runs rampant, so it's more normal in a relative sense.

You do still qualify as Asperger's. They just changed the term Asperger's with ASD to broaden the spectrum of autism and the criteria within which you qualify on the spectrum. You were diagnosed with Asperger's so you are still autistic, it doesn't just go away just because the medical community changes the umbrella term within which autism occurs. I really do hope you aren't diminishing your autism because of this and invalidating yourself.

David Golf It isn't really though is it. I think usually you can tell if someone has 'issues' and how you choose to treat them is a moral thing. In Chris Packham's case it's not as if he has ever done that badly, or even appeared to be very socially awkward, or very naïve, on TV. I wouldn't want to be hard on him if he did have problems, but his success must take the edge off - it's enviable for him to have done so well.

@@therespectedlex9794 I have always thought there could be a little ''Spin'' going on here. Very fashionable these days to have a ''label'' & then fish for ''Sympathy''. May be good when raising lots of money when you have a bee in your bonnet over something like HS2. Now with a fortune of tax payers money already being spunked, it would be foolish to stop, imagine the people that have already had their lives turned upside down find out it wasn't going to be finished. The main thing i have found about people who say they have aspergers is they get focused on something to the detriment of everything else & a usually are very selfish & have no empathy with others. Packham fits the bill perfectly, aspergers or not!.

@@kevinparker461 People with Asperger's are by definition supposed to struggle with, or lack, empathy. That said, it doesn't always mean that they do have the least empathy, or no sense of fairness. Depending on how assertive you are, or your station in life, things can be very different, for those with the same condition.

Tadesan I have been through horrendous things (that I don't even feel comfortable explaining) and no I'm not pulling the victim card here. My lack of social skills has made me an outcast, bullied relentlessly for even the smallest thing, lived under the roofs of Narcissists, but I absorb Biology, Anatomy, History, Psychology, Philosophy like a sponge, I have written my own Sci Find Stories, created Art pieces, composed my own music, and it's because of my Aspergers that I do these things. People want others with Aspergers to be "cured" so that they aren't bullied. An epiphany came to me years ago, why would I want to be "cured" so that I become like everyone else, bullies, unempathetic (and Empathy is one of my most powerful strengths) and to fit in with them giving away my drive for the things I love doing, for that focus, for the thousands of thoughts happening at once that HELP me imagine whole worlds in my head, to transfer in writing and in music, to give away my empathy, so that when someone else with Aspergers or Depression is being treated like shit, walking down the Corridors with loads of people laughing, staring, shouting at them, I'm to join in? Don't think so. The device you are typing this message on is an expansion of the early advances of Alan Turing who had Aspergers. The electrical devices, safely surging away to give you, warmth, light and entertainment, are from another Speculated Aspie, Nikola Tesla (not Thomas Edison) The major breakthroughs in Physics with a massive contribution from the most famous Aspie of all, Albert Einstein. The gorgeous work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, inspiring so many, his genius living on throughout the ages. Electronic Music is everywhere, it's floodgates were opened by a pioneer who also had Aspergers and so happens to be my hero, Gary Numan. Still to this day making amazing sounds, heartfelt lyrics (and not dumb teen shit like Drugs, Sex, Alcohol and partying) and the many people he has inspired and influenced Nine Inch Nails Marilyn Manson Snoop Dogg Basement Jaxx Moby Trevor Something Deviant UK Goldfrapp Prince If you took Aspergers away from all these people, the world wouldn't even be the way it is today. And I know I must sound like some Supremacist but we practically BUILT this world. Hans Asperger the Nazi our disorder is named after dubbed us "Autistic Psychopaths" yet he like Mengele experimented on us and killed many of us, the myth that we don't have empathy yet we get the piss ripped out of us, then people want to drag us into that same horrid state of mind! I'm sorry but Fuck That! I would like to be me and not what everyone else wants me to be. It's not us that needs to change, it's everyone else (and no I don't mean everyone has to have Aspergers)

Ryan Hunter Well said, and though I think aspies can be narcissistic and psychopathic (not naming any names), it seems a morally neutral, or even better thing to have. 'We' are usually the ones who dodge bullies, not find victims.

@@therespectedlex9794 True, just because someone is an Aspie, doesn't automatically mean they are a saint. This of course is the same for Neurotypicals. There are indeed brilliant and amazing "normal" people out there who are unlike how we say them at times, genuinely compassionate, Empathic, good natured and respectful. I think it is society that needs to change, Neurotypicals have flaws in their society, but because their society is the majority and has been since the beginning, of course they are used to it. Great change and I mean REAL change, (not what every political faction from SJWs to the Alt Right or the most important politicians tell you ) where everyone is taught empathy, no need for modern cultures. Start from the ground up and begin again. We don't necessarily need more Aspies, just more compassionate people.

Ryan Hunter Yes, and those who downplay the morals of people in general are in my view suspicious. I've got a family like that, in fact. But also, books on the subject are written as if it's only Asperger's which is the problem for those who have Asperger's, or who don't, and of course it isn't. So everyone should know better.
