In past hydrogen car have failed but still india is trying to get into hydrogen production. even bsuinessmen like ambani's reliance industries and adani group are all trying to enter green hydrogen business. but when electric cars , ev , scooters are the future why is government spending billions on green hydrogen
Hydrogen and Ammonia are envisaged to be the future fuels to replace fossil fuels. Production of these fuels by using power from renewable energy, termed as green hydrogen and green ammonia, is one of the major requirements towards environmentally sustainable energy security of the nation. Government of India is taking various measures to facilitate the transition from fossil fuel / fossil fuel based feed stocks to green hydrogen / green ammonia. The notification of this policy is one of the major steps in this endeavour.
Green Hydrogen / Ammonia manufacturers may purchase renewable power from the power exchange or set up renewable energy capacity themselves or through any other, developer, anywhere.

Like electrifying huge ships and all..Hydrogen is always expensive than ev.. Why would anyone choose expensive tech when ev is their... I think there are some topic you missed. 1)Hydrogen is highly flammable and to seal hydrogen in a container is very difficult. Its the smallest atom and can leak even through the tiniest of places. This causes a major safety issue in vehicles. (Also Hydrogen embrittlement might be an issue) 2) hydrogen is difficult to transport. To transport it efficiently we need to liquify it which is again a difficult task as it has some of the lowest boiling points. 3) Production of hydrogen by electrolysis is very inefficient. Hence the majority of hydrogen that we see today available in the market is not made using electrolysis.

Basically it comes down to this: Oil = Dependency on Oil Rich Nations. Batteries = Dependency on Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, and other Rare earths which means the countries that have these resources will cartelize. Hydrogen = Self Reliance, Potential to THE DEFINITIVE MARKET leader among a heavily cartelized Global Energy Market controlled by the West and other developed countries according to their interests. Thereby, being Self Reliant, India can and definitely will break the Global Energy Cartel and will start directing and finally controlling GLOBAL POLICIES.

If you think hydrogen is a failed system, the reason might be because a stomach full Aragon county United States of America which think itself has a big power and what it does will followed by other, want to keep every country dependent on energy and it gets cheep energy from else where and don’t want to save environment or to get a sustainable energy. If someone is ready to feed you will you struggle to grow something to eat. That is the reason. @@vineetsingh7156 You should see the overall picture. Lithium has a cost which has to be paid outside India. This will make us dependent on an outside country. Just like petroleum. Which made us dependent on middle East countries. All this dependency has a cost. The middle East and consequently the US or the West blackmailed for various agendas. And though we survived most but had to comply with most. With opening up other oil sources (natural and man-made) the middle East has gone soft on india. Most of the petroleum energy is transportation. Coming to cost. Lithium is heavy and the charge takes time. It's also prone to heat up and catch fire. A problem which has no solution. Then comes recycling. It's not that environmental friendly. Another option was aluminium air battery. Which degrades with use and doesn't heat up much and isn't likely to catch fire. Can be replaced entirely after use. And is recyclable. Battery is heavy takes space and causes weight which affects milage and hence decrease energy efficiency. Hydrogen is bountiful. Can be produced anywhere chemically or electrically. Can be used like Petrol. And the vehicle is like petrol ones. A fossil fuel plant has better energy conversion than vehicles. So electricity far from congested can be transmitted. Has very less environmental impact. Unlike lithium batteries and petroleum vehicle emissions. Since research has concentrated just on lithium other options have much less research.

@dgupta42 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, hydrogen technology works. It has worked for decades, but it has never been commercially feasible and it makes no sense for India to invest in hydrogen. Fact 1 - Hydrogen is NOT a primary fuel, It is only an energy storage and carrier, like batteries. Fact 2 - Almost all (~98%) of hydrogen is produced by steam reformation of fossil gas, in a highly polluting process. Sometimes called grey hydrogen these days. Once you add the losses in storing and using hydrogen, using fossil gas directly as CNG in vehicles is much cleaner than using hydrogen! I am not saying we should do it, but just that hydrogen can be worse than oil & gas. Fact 3 - The biggest backers of Hydrogen are oil & gas companies, and lobby groups paid by O&G. Because the O&G firms and major oil producing countries are looking for a way to stay in business in the long term, after already misleading us for the last 50 years. They want funding to convert methane gas to hydrogen and pump it via existing pipelines. They also have another vested interest in hydrogen as they are the largest customers of industrial hydrogen (for use in refineries and petrochemical plants). This makes zero sense for India because we are not a major oil & gas producing country. We do have our own sun and own wind that middle eastern oil & gas producing nations cannot control - some of the same countries who happily use the oil money to fund terrorism. Supporting oil & gas and hydrogen will be a security disaster for India on top of an environmental disaster. Fact 4 - It is highly wasteful to convert renewable electricity to green hydrogen, store and transport it, and then convert it back to electricity in a fuel cell. You lose about 75% of the energy. To get 1 unit of work done with green hydrogen, you need 4 units of renewable electricity. Whereas modern grid transmission and battery charging losses are now below 20%. Net result: We will need to produce 3-3.5x more electricity to use green hydrogen in transport! It is far better to just use the electricity directly to charge batteries, or in other work. This is why Hydrogen has kept promising the future but never actually competed with battery electric. As the energy density of batteries kept increasing, the addressable size of the hydrogen market in transport has dwindled. That makes economics of hydrogen harder day by day. Fact 5 - Even the weight advantage of hydrogen is not as much as people think. This is because we ignore the extra weight required in a hydrogen car. The most efficient hydrogen tanks are able to store only about 5% hydrogen by weight. The weight of the tank is 20 times the weight of hydrogen stored in it! This is before you add the weight of the fuel cell. And even a Hydrogen car has a smaller Li battery in it. Hydrogen is becoming less and less competitive each year, instead of improving its situation in transport. Even automakers in countries like Japan, Korea and Germany that have invested in Hydrogen for 50 years with govt support are now furiously working on launching battery EVs, because they know they will lose their market if they keep waiting for Hydrogen. And have you ever thought that the heaviest, longest distance transport on land used in our country already runs on electricity? The electrified Indian Railway! Gadkari is already making a 10km section of new Delhi Mumbai expressway with overhead cables to test electric road trucks. The battery size can be limited to say a 100km range to take care of local area movement on both ends of the journey, and the highways can be electrified earning NHAI a new revenue stream! NHAI could be richer than our oil companies if this works.

India should switch to green Hydrogen, green Hydrogen is already cost-competitive compared to petroleum fuel in India. Petrol costs more than 100 rupees per liter and the average fuel economy of petrol cars is 15-20 km/liter which means that it costs 5-7 rupees per km, now let's compare it to green Hydrogen, green Hydrogen costs 350-500 rupees per kg and a Fuel cell car like Toyota Mirai can hold at least 5.6kg of Hydrogen and it can run for at least 650-1000 km before needing a refill which means that fuel cell vehicles cost 2.80-4.30 rupees per km (500 rupees x 5.6 kg / (650 km to 1000 km)). the Indian government has announced National Hydrogen Mission and Indian companies like Reliance and Adani Enterprise are making big investments to bring green Hydrogen cost down to less than 100 rupees per kg which mean that in near future fuel cell vehicles will become even more cost-competitive compared to petroleum vehicles. However the cost of Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles is still high compared to petroleum vehicles, price of fuel cell vehicles will reduce when production will increase. Toyota has a very important role in green mobility solutions because it is the market leader in fuel cell technologies, Toyota should work with the Indian government and try to establish hydrogen infrastructure as soon as possible, Toyota should launch highly affordable fuel cell cars to compete with battery electric vehicles, Toyota also understands Indian automobile market, a fuel cell version of existing cars like fuel cell Toyota Yaris or fuel cell Toyota Fortuner at a competitive price can make fuel-cell cars popular very soon. Batteries are big, bulky, and heavy, to carry a lot of weight for a long distance we need to add lots of batteries, and the more batteries we add the charging time increase and the more weight we add and to carry that extra weight we need to add even more batteries which are not practical especially in large commercial vehicles like trucks, trains, ships etc. Battery components are available in some countries like China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, etc, we need to import components like Lithium and Cobalt from those countries. Currently, we are dependent on OPEC for fulfilling our energy needs, if every vehicle will be replaced by battery electric vehicles then we will have to be dependent on countries like China and the Democratic Republic of Congo for getting materials used in batteries. Batteries are also difficult to recycle and have a shorter life span compared to fuel cells. Switching to green Hydrogen can make most countries like India self-sufficient in their energy needs. Excess electricity can be stored in big Hydrogen tanks and be used as needed. Hydrogen is lighter and more energy-dense compared to any battery, we can not design and manufacture batteries that are lighter than Hydrogen gas no matter how much innovation will be there. big vehicles like large commercial trucks will need a very high-power supercharger to charge the truck in a short time. It can take down the electricity grid even if there are less than half a dozen large trucks charging simultaneously because it will require a large amount of power from the electricity grid which can fail and shut down any kind of power grid. Also, fast charging degrades batteries faster compared to slow charging. Some people are hating Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles because Elon Musk has always criticized and made fun of fuel cell technology. Musk is intelligent but he can not be right all the time. Batteries should be used in electronic devices(SmartPhones, Laptops, etc), for vehicles especially large vehicles Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology makes more sense. The Indian government must accelerate the switch to green mobility solutions by rapidly creating and improving the Hydrogen Infrastructure(Hydrogen Gas Stations).

In the gaseous form Hydrogen is stored at 700 bar, which is 700 times normal atmospheric pressure, Hydrogen has a density of 42 kg/m3 compared with 0.090 kg/m3 normal pressure and temperature conditions, at this pressure 5 kg of Hydrogen can be stored in a 125-litre tank, this technology enables us to store enough Hydrogen to allow a car that runs on a fuel cell battery to cover between 500 to 600 km between fill-ups.

Right topic but description is wrong. It's not hydrogen vs electric. Both are electric only. It's hydrogen electric vs Battery electric. Both methods need electricity first, And in the vehicle, electric motors are used to run. Hydrogen fuel cell doesn't burn hydrogen, like we burn petrol or diesel. Hydrogen goes through a membrane to produce electricity. And that electricity is used in car. Main advantage in car and bus space is, it doesn't need to charge for a long time. You can refill the tank with hydrogen just like you refill CNG. but unlike CNG. Hydrogen doesn't cause pollution. And more importantly, india isn't just investing in hydrogen, it's investing in GREEN hydrogen. There's no point of hydrogen cars if hydrogen is produced by burning coal. Wind and solar are temporary solutions and they aren't very efficient in long term. So nuclear energy is the only choice we have for producing GREEN hydrogen. We have 11 nuclear plants under construction, and it's nowhere near enough. We need to be building hundreds...

I just want to say that EVs are not a good option for the future. The Electricity we use for charging EVs comes from coal powerplants then how can it save the environment more the EVs more the demand of electricity and more the pollution. We still don't have as many nuclear and renewable energy powerplants according to our needs. The second problem is Batteries. The price of EVs double just because of this battery. Batteries are made with the help of lithium and if the demand of EVs increase we need more batteries and for that we need more lithium, and lithium is not unlimited or infinite. Scientists say that if the demand of batteries do not decrease all the lithium reserves of this planet will end. And no one is talking or even thinking about this. I am not totally against EVs, but I think we should think about our future from a different angle.
