I went to Hong Kong recently. They also have narrow streets and a very dense landscape. Yet they had clean roads and not much traffic. They had great red lights for crosswalks, one way in many locations, and camera trackers everywhere for vehicles. I rarely saw police going around patrolling there, yet people followed the rules. It's not impossible to turn our cities into modern beautiful locations. We just need political will to make the change.
@shivam_nagar69

Not a political will, indians need a whole new mindset, still i can see your comment carries old mindset of "govt fault etc etc" Nope it's not govt's fault, it's our problem, we never follow rules, whenever i travel it's a hell for me, everywhere honking, no rules, anywhere cars are parked on roads. For certain reasons we can abuse govt like no footpath, diff lanes for two wheelers, lane marking, etc. But 90% is our fault.
@bigchairmanmeow

@@shivam_nagar69 Oh yes, I agree about mindset change dude. My blame to the government was mostly about lack of good roads(which don't get clogged), lack of footpaths, one way rules in dense areas with small roads. Above all, we have a very slow and lazy Municipal Corporation. We don't have decent garbage collection departments, we don't see the streets being cleaned. We don't see people who litter getting fined. Yes, people need to change. But we all know that they don't change unless someone is holding a stick on their heads. So, in a way, government has to get serious first and lead by example + force.

@@bigchairmanmeow even if government makes footpath,, then after a few days shopkeepers and vendors will encroach the footpath. Making civilian lives miserable. And government will also be reluctant to drive them away because of vote bank. Also if government tries to drive them away then opposition parties will come and support them.

Exactly, The US, which this video takes example of, is in fact one of the worst examples of urban planning and commercial infrastructure. For Indian urban planning, EU style non-car centric planning should be the target and to reach there starting like our asian counterparts is a good way just like you said about HK since they are most compatible with our existing cities and it would just take minimal upgrade and of cource policy changes for the citizens.

nah, stop watching CCP videos, I am not saying we are better or anything, but trust me, their cities are examples of what not to do. If anything, probably take some guiding principles from European nations, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and a bit of the USA (still better than Chinese cities, so it works) but Urban Planning has to be unique to India, heck even unique to each city.

@@pramod_p5 lol no, even Chinese tier-2 cities are better planned than tier-1 cities of western countries. But that's due to the government owning all land for unrestricted urban planning. Only a few democratic countries like Singapore have better planning than China.

I don't think we should take America as the best example for everything. They have wide roads and good parking yes, but it's also causing lot of problems for the people. It's very difficult to get anywhere in the US without a car. The urban heat island effect is very bad even in low density suburbs because the roads are unnecessarily wide and lack green cover. Also despite having such huge roads, they still suffer with worse traffic congestion because of lack of public transport. India is at a good spot with medium size road in most cities. I think we should follow a more China style system with more trams, metro and other public transit instead of wider roads. It's nice that you addressed the good effects of having pedestrian friendly areas, especially in old markets.

Wide roads and car-centric infrastructure is not necessarily "development". Walkability is important in a modern city. I think it is bad if you cannot get anywhere without your car because everything in the city would be sooo far away! Also you need more parking spaces and we see how a large area of North American cities is wasted because of them. However, while India is not car-friendly, it is also not pedestrian-friendly. Good quality public transit, cycle paths and even footpaths are rare in most tier-2 cities and I've seen cycle paths in bad condition all over Delhi. I think India can accommodate its massive population in cities only if they encourage public transit and cycling/walking as there's simply not enough space for each of us to get a car. It will also serve well for the poor populace of India as they can be easily affordable and will promote equality. Also fitness will be encouraged.

@@anantpathak2899 Indian government, state government or municipal corporations need to make new rules regarding cars, like they have in Europe. We have ULEZ zones and high parking fees in main city area's that discourages people to travel by car within the city. Indian cities could apply the same, but first a robust public transport system and infrastructure for pedestrians is necessary.

1. City in the USA transformed the 1950s(Robert Moses wasn't mentioned once in the video ) not 300 400 yrs ago. Usa didn't have car back then as well. They had railway line around which towns n cities are formed. 2. Denser city are better for business n for the environment. Everything is close by. For eg. Paris early was made of 3 4 town which has everything within 20 minute distance. Same with our cities as well. I hope the channel creators promotes denser cities ,zoning laws, n showcase that car centric infrastructure isn't sustainable. How it financially impacts the lives of people. How suburbs in the USA are a ponzi scheme. How mixed use development is better. Reason why our old cities nmarkete are still located in denser zones. Because pedestrian friendly infrastructure boost business. For eg. Chandni chowk in Delhi was transformed completely for pedestrian. Also the creator can dig in more n understand how alot of our cities as well have grown closer to railway lines.

My Thinking about Why There is not Planned City in India is because India Not Face Too Much Destruction Of Cities as faced by European Cities. Many European Cities are Destroy Several times in WW2,WW1 And many more Wars. So After Destruction there is chance of Planned Cities And India not face this level of Destruction. So Government don't make planned cities except newly found city. Imagine government came and says leave your house because we want to make road wider. Correct me If I am wrong.

Talking about car centric urban planning, I think it is more prevalent in countries where automobiles and fuel are cheap. What do you guys think?
@rutvikrs
@rutvikrs Жыл бұрын
It has more to do with the history of urban planning and availability of space than fuel. If you visit New England, Spanish era Floridan cities, old Argentinan cities, you will see the same width not seen in England, Portugal, Spain and France. Though it's not the same as modern cities in both American continents. Generally and simplistically, there are three schools of urban planning. European(very similar to ours), New World/American and postmodern. "Car centric urban planning" is an adaptation of New World urban planning where roads got straighter and zoning laws to separate residential, business, manufacturing and agricultural lands were made.

I agree and disagree with it, coz there were parts of suburbs that were entirely owned by some prominent landowners, which the family sold to make it a residential area, yet we somehow got parks, shops and stuff. The expansion after 1991 was too high to regulate anything, and the most significant benefactors were politicians. A good chunk of them own lands for IT parks and sold residential areas around it to become extremely rich.

In contrast, most of us in India and a good chunk of the USA believe that home is like a default place to spend most of the time, taking care of a family and stuff. And going out is just for getting the necessary stuff done (work, entertainment, shopping etc.). Thus a bigger home with more space for tagging along with the family, an individual lawn for the kids to play and adults to relax vs a single-storey home with maybe 2 bedrooms and more community places like green spaces or parks, clubs, shops, restaurants and outside interactions are the competing results based on which policies are adopted. Both philosophies have their own benefits and problems. But he generally sticks to the house as just a resting point philosophy in most of his videos. This is what I have observed from a good chunk of his videos, but again, I may be wrong too.

2 most imp points are 1. people (walker+vehicles) following rules, 2. encroachment on road side. apart from that other more organized cities has narrow road because this cities are not planned vehicle centric.
@pankkaj.sharrma
@pankkaj.sharrma Жыл бұрын
These are few small small reasons. Because most of the city we see today are built after the introduction of vehicles. So the biggest issue is that govt brings in infra change but those changes are like too little too late. After suffering in traffic for 10 yrs, govt decides to broaden road but they take into account the road traffic which was present 5 yrs earlier. So, even after broadening roads, traffic issue is not resolved. Everyone might have seen this. I am talking about the roads which has land to broaden. Atleast highways passing through the city should be broad. Highways passing through city are like arteries.

Also people follow here one way roads as in Banglore if someone break this rule he will make huge traffic congestion and he will also be stuck also traffic police are there to fine those kind of people. I dont care about roads and other stuff as long as something is done about spitting on roads, waste management and shops on platforms. I live in Chennai and i can guarantee that not one platform in the city can be used for walking. Most of the time its filled with shop stalls (who by the way throw waste around them). Other times its filled with construction material or there are vehicles either driving or parked on them. And in some cases there arent any platforms at all, demolished in the interest of widening roads.

I've seen multiple roads where footpaths are bigger than roads. Not to mention unnecessary cycle tracks, which is so impractical use of that much space. For 50-60 two-wheelers and 20-30 four-wheelers and 2-3 buses and trucks there's like 1 cycle that travels, which btw can (and in reality it does) travel on same road as cars and bikes on sideline. Entire lane is practically wasted in this. Isse acha waha bade wale aam k ped laga dete, chav bhi milti aam bhi milte.

I think the best and most effective way to solve this problem would be to upgrade the public transport system. The problem with the American system is that even if u have to go like 800 m u have to take a car because they make so wide rodes. and it can just induce more traffic to the city because people will buy cars for transport rather than using public transport and the city will end up having congestion after 4 or 5 years and it will be way worse than before. and it is bad for the local economy

Age of cities is not a factor for indian cities to be like this and dosent justifies worst Town planning policies and peoples lack of asthetics.. None of the big 7-8 metro cities were there 300-400 years ago except for Delhi which existed for 1000 years, the part of Delhi which is old is only 1/10th of current size of Delhi. So no justification for Bad Town Planning. Even After Independence many cities were smaller in size as compared to their present form, but no proper town planning was followed and executed, hapazard development with no regards to law was allowed by the government (both elected and opposition) in all states.It also not about the govenment, we Indian's as a whole dosent actually have any problem with mess around us and always we try to break rules within our own limits. So actually no one to blame, a society deserves to be as they are.
