Invercargill is in a rough situation. This city which Mick Jagger once described as the “arsehole of the world” is experiencing a deluge of challenges right now.

Invercargill is a nice small city, but if you haven't noticed already we're in the process of getting several construction projects done for providing a major upgrade and revitalizement to our city. Invercargill is a nice small city, but we faced a number of problems with the city, the lack of new developments for years were not doing great for the city, we still have a lot of buildings that have untenanted for years, a lot of our building stock is neglected and left to rot, and some aren't suitable for modern use these days, buildings fall below the current building standard, the demand for space became very evident and we had poor foot traffic. We needed these issues to change now so developers have now decided to get a whole block redeveloped, a brand new hotel and several other projects were announced and completed

@@dangerboy1111 Most of Southland's indigenous forest and shrubland is under legal protections, and we've already lost 90% of our wetlands before they started coming under Environment Southland. The only way you're going to be able to industrialize Southland is by getting rid of already in use farmland which is going to be really difficult since Southland alone has around 11% of NZ's total national dairy herd.

I visited Invercargill many times in the 1970's, selling encyclopaedias at AMP shows, door to door etc. I personally called Invercargill the arsehole of New Zealand, long before I or anyone else was aware that a member of the Rolling Stones had opined similarly. Bleak, overcast, sparse, cold, grey but actually jolly nice once you stepped inside the warm and cosy home of a local resident. I recall farmers and their families coming into town at the weekends to have a meal at some large old fashioned hotel on main street before going to watch a picture (movie). Long ago now...

Of course all the shops were shut in this video, they were in the process of knocking them down to make way for a huge new mall! What do you expect them to do? Keep them open and have the shop assistant greet people with 'Welcome to our store, here's your hardhat, mind the collapsing ceiling over by the coat rack to the left.' And as for Tiwai and SIT closing/changing, as of now nothings changed and who knows? They have been literally saying this for years.

Invercargill is going to build a mall and knock down historical buildings? That is ridiculously backward. Note to Tim Shadbolt: Malls are dying across the world because of online retail. They’re now seen as a curse that kill off town centres. This would be the only new shopping mall I’ve heard of anyone building anywhere in over a decade. Historical buildings can be a tourist draw card.

Ah no. Rio Tinto is not any charity. They’re a corporation and they don’t owe Invercargill anything. If they’re really one of the most profitable corporations in earth; they won’t remain so if they continue to operate or invest into facilities that make losses like Tiwai point. I can remember 30 years ago; questions were being asked about the Tiwai point smelter and its long term future, especially when the bottom fell out of the aluminium market when the Cold War cut the military aerospace industry. Even during the 80s; many people in NZ said it shouldn’t have been built because it was basically Muldoon giving corporate welfare to Australian company Comalco and some Japanese company.

Rio Tinto runs a very successful operation, they use power supplied by a dedicated power station totally separate from the national grid, the government agreed to run and maintain that supply at discount cost. This was very interesting. I stayed in Invercargill for a night and a day a couple years ago on my way to Rakiura. I thought it was a lovely town but yes, very bleak. I definitely do not look like I am from NZ and every time I walked into a place people asked why I was there, which did not happen in any other town I went to at all. It wasn't hostile or anything just unbelieving that anyone had a reason to visit.

Invercargill won't be that bleak in the future, thanks to an entire block currently being redeveloped and a new hotel being built, as well Paknsave being redeveloped and a new Kmart. For the block redevelopment project the developers saw the city looking so tired, not enough modern in the city, so many neglected empty buildings left to rot rather than used and some of these buildings below the modern building standard, lack of space, poor foot traffic, and no proper spaces to meet, socialize, shop and eat, basically from all these reasons there was no heart to the city, so it was decided now is the time to do something about some of these neglected buildings and bring some modern in the city to revitalize it, the block boarded by Esk, Dee, Kelvin, and Tay St which was mostly neglected empty buildings were mostly demolished except for a few buildings and the facades of 3 three heritage buildings and a mall is being built

Most highschools have bad reps and if your a teen there really isn't much for you to do. However, the people are really lovely and kind. Hello there, I was thinking about going to Invercargill to do a master’s in management and would like to stay in NZ afterwards. I have been to Invers as a backpacker in 2017, but only for a few days. Is the job market really that bad? :/ Also, what reputation does the SIT have in the rest of NZ? I would give up everything here in europe for that move. Don’t wanna do that just to have a „bad“ degree and no job afterwards. :(

@@daDaVoRee i was asking mitre but hey if you wanna come down do it. Very hard to get accomodation at present tho. A lot of people desperate since everyone comes down here for SIT and takes up all the rentals. Just don't have the infrastructure to facilitate the influx to be honest. Tim shadbolt failed to factor that into his attempt to stimulate the local economy with SIT. All it did was drive up accomodation costs and availability. But if you have the money to buy, it's great even though house prices are getting close to national average, they are still relatively cheap down here.

Yip come here to study. If you're into the night life, bars etc.... then invers isn't the best. However what a lot of people forget is invercargill has many beautiful places within a 15min drive for outdoor activities. Another thing is there is a pretty good work life balance compared with cities as once again, everything is close by so you're spending no time in traffic. Another good thing is invers is a doorway to many beautiful places, within 2-3 hours drive you could be in central otago like qt, wanaka, dunedin, Te Anau & milford sound.

Invercargill is becoming New Zealand's version of Corner Brook, a city in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador that is experiencing a similar situation. Like Invercargill, Corner Brook is a natural resource intensive city which relies heavily on the Education, Forestry, and Tourism sectors to sustain their economy. Corner Brook's pulp and paper mill which pays great money used to have up to 1,000 employees. Today, their pulp mill employs less than 400 people. Like Invercargill, Corner Brook is paying a price for its over-reliance on the natural resources and manufacturing sector as their business climate is terrible, businesses are closing, and young people don't want to stay due to lack of employment opportunities with most of them opting to go to another Canadian province, Alberta. In fact, Corner Brook's population has been declining for over 50 years, and some of it is attributed to one employer after another leaving the city, poor business climate, too much red tape, a demographic time bomb, and more people living in outlying areas. If both Invercargill and Corner Brook lose their main sources of employment, whether its the Tiwai Smelter in Invercargill or Corner Brook Pulp and Paper in Corner Brook, both cities will have a bleak future. At the end of the day, if Invercargill doesn't get its act together, including retaining the Aluminum Smelter and diversify their economy, it will become New Zealand's version of Corner Brook.

Invercargill and Southland are massive export generating regions; Wellington and Auckland are massive deficit economic regions. So much money was stripped from the South Island and stolen by successive Governments to create Jobs in North Auckland, Auckland, Waikato, BOP to keep unemployment down ! The industries up North were massively protected Low Skill Jobs! Tragic But True! We have to keep the unskilled and poorly educated off the streets and out of the Tribes....now all this has failed and the Tribes are associated with the gangs! Southland by its self used to account for 25% of all New Zealand's sheep meat exports in 1973. It is a massive exporting economy, but Governments needs to buy votes in South Auckland, Hamilton bla bla!
