Growing up in Iran, British-Iranian journalist and filmmaker Sahar Zand dreamed of being a man. Her childhood logic told her that was the only way to escape the restrictions that women in Iran face. She’s on a mission to uncover why hope is dangerous to authoritarian regimes, like the Islamic Republic of Iran. The answer? “Hope is angry; it’s defiant; it’s dangerous. Hope is right now, firmly standing its ground on the streets of Iran, chanting “women, life, freedom”.
Sahar is a British-Iranian award-winning Broadcast journalist and multimedia documentary filmmaker. She has presented and produced documentaries and reported on current affairs in some of the most remote and hostile environments for international broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Vice Sky and a number of other international broadcasters. Sahar fled Iran at 12 years old and after years of living in refugee camps across Europe, she eventually arrived in the UK. The adversity faced during these years has given Sahar an insight into marginalised communities and allows her to report from a unique perspective rarely seen in mainstream media.

A deeply inspiring speech. This is more than a brief depiction of misogyny in Iran, it conveys and manifests the need for change, and as the speaker gives the speech, I can say that she’s definitely changing the world without a doubt. I can tell the speaker is a brave woman, undeserving all what she’s gone through- violence, heavy restrictions.. - and so are all Iran women who fight for freedom and democracy. I genuinely pray and hope for Iranian women who are fighting for their lives for their safety and power. From South Korea ❤🇮🇷

I'm in the US. I see immigrant women still completely covered up, with only their eyes showing through a small slit. I would always wonder if that was their choice or if the husbands were still making their wives cover up in America. It looks awful. The summers were way over 100 degrees and the sons and husbands had normal clothes on. Every other women had normal clothes on too. Congrats to this brave women for standing up!

Bravo to Sahar. I left Iran in 1980 with my 2 infant daughters because I did not want them to be exposed to such gender apartheid that is going on in the Islamic Iran. The world has to stand up in one voice and say no to this religious ignorance in Iran and anywhere else in the world. Forced hijab is wrong, and making women second-hand citizens is wrong, even under Islamic rules or with any other excuses.

Great speach. It is inspiring to see the bravery of the women of my country Let's use this opportunity to respect women all around the globe fighting for good. From Ukrainian🇺🇦 women standing shoulder to shoulder with men against an external enemy; to Iranian brave women standing against their internal enemy (The infamous Islamic Republic) Women's day isn't a holiday. It's a memorial for justice. Remember Iranian women and what they have chanted: WOMEN, LIFE, FREEDOM ZAN, ZENDEGI, AZADI 💚🤍❤

Woman is our mother who gave birth to us and raised us. Woman is our sister who shared everything and supported each other. Woman is our daughter who is our heart. A woman is the wife we lived together, had children, raised them and gave them the appropriate education. The woman feels the same pain, the same joy as us and has the same worries. Please can someone tell me a reason, why do we not deserve the same respect, the same human rights and the same opportunities in education and in life? Why are we not exactly the same and equal human beings?

Much respect from the U.S. Hard to believe this inequality still exists. Why are men in Iran so strict? I hear there is inequality in other countries too. For example my parents country, Mexico. Here in California it's cool to see everyone with the same inalienable rights.
@mehrab98
@mehrab98 Жыл бұрын
Hi Ricky, as an Iranian man I'd say we are not strict as you said. Imagine you go to Islamic Republic schools and every day you hear about their rotted beliefs. This is exactly how terrorists prepare children to act in their favor like a toy. Fortunately in Iran because of a rich history and culture and of course a secular government before the Islamic Republic, men(majority) aren't strict and they have been a big support to women. Like now: after Mahsa Amini got killed in police custody, mostly Iranian men lost their lives to protest these double standards This is what this government has tried in 45 years to change and it failed. Women, Life, Freedom 💚 🤍 ❤️

I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about! The struggle for democracy has been going on since the mullahs set up a religious dictatorship known as 'Velayat Faghih'. What the death of Mahsa Amini brought about, was the anger of Iranians, spearheaded by young women and supported by men. This has nothing to do with mullahs reactionary stance against the West and Israel! Iranian people are very Western orientated and have no problem with Israel! They want good relations with all nations that accept our sovereignty.

Tell us your background so that people can understand where you're coming from. As regards to Israel wanting to wipe us out, your prejudice is talking instead of facts! It's, in fact, the mullahs who constantly threaten Isreal with destruction! If you go to chief mullah's website, there is plenty about the destruction of Israel! Israel has never said such a thing! Let me give you a bit of history lesson: Iran's connection with Israel goes back to Old Testament times! It was King Cyrus who liberated the Jews from Babylonian captivity! As a result, he is mentioned in the OT! The Jews were so enamoured with Cyrus's action that many if them chose to settle in Persia! This long friendship continued until the Islamic revolution, when most if the Jews left Iran. Today, there are many Iranian Jews in Israel, speaking perfect Farsi! There are TV documentaries about them on KZfaq!

@@sety1685You don't accept islamic republic? What would you accept? To be western colony? You're not even aware of what you're fighting for. Fighting against hijab, women rights, etc. are just bad excuses for another coloured revolution which is not in the interest of a single Iranian.

She did not mention her religious practices at all? She might be a very devout religious woman, we can not say. Islam does not have a rule of wearing the headscarf - the profet has only said "Women shall cover their most beautiful parts". It is she extremist governments that have decided women should be covered, and they enforce it.

Cobblers Ms Zand. We hope you will be able to support women in Iran and take up cause to have the sanctions lifted. This will mean that women do not lose children prematurely or have disabled children born due to lack of nutrition. You are merely looking for fame
