The last moment when ian turned to face the camera and messed up the chess pieces, and that's when the feelings come in. You suddenly notice Ian losing his composure. He has been trying to keep his calm and assertiveness in the match, but at the end you notice his humanness. Compare to Ding, Ian is more of the traditional alpha male (or at least trying to be one). But in the end when everything is settled, that's when the true faces comes out.

Actually Ding's name comes from the Confucian Analects “己欲立而立人”. Li means to establish (i.e., stand up on a firm footing). The quotation basically means that if you want to become established (in terms of virtue), you establish others. It's really a lovely sentiment that does not argue for either self-interest or self-sacrifice, but links doing good for others with attaining one's own goals of goodness. Establishing others multiplies virtue for everyone, so how can you go wrong?

true. i'm new at this sport. i play it at home but had no interest in competitive chess let alone the wcc. then youtube recommended game 6 of this thing. ding has a smiling face and soft demeanor while ian seems stand offish. so to someone with pop culture rotted brain, ding is more likeable

Ding isn't the underdog. Bookmakers estimated before the game started that the chances are almost equal. Slightly in favor of Ian. In the candidates, Nepo was considered an underdog, and no one expected him to win the candidates despite winning the previous one.

@@SzrrrkEWL Isn’t it true? The last major success he had of this calibre was that time against Magnus. 2017 or 2020. I forget. Other than that, his international placements seem to have been all over the map. Meanwhile, this was Ian’s second time in a row making it to top 2. Even Ding said that if he lost this time he would retire. That’s not what one might say unless one likely struggled a hell of a lot to even make it that far. This win was not expected and I sure as hell agree with Levy if that’s his sentiment as well.

He was. Look up what he had to do to even qualify in Candidates and how he started as an unlikely figure to even compete in the WC.

Ding was not in the Candidates until Sergey Karjakin was disqualified because of his political statements regarding the war. DIng had to play something like 20 or 30 games in a month in order to get enough activity to be considerate as a substitute to Karjakin. Next in the Candidates, Ding barely won a draw position against Hikaru Nakamura, which barely placed him in 2nd place, only half a point before Nakamura. Then he had to wait for Magnus to forfeit his title, or else the match would have been Magnus vs Ian. Then during the match against Ian, Ding was tailing behind most of the games. What Ding did would be considered impossible by many people, and for a reason.

On the other hand Karpov and Korchnoi just had this belief that the other guy's team is trying to distract them during the games and sabotage their concentration, again no facade from either and no unprovoked tantrums for no reason, the reason why I said "for the most part" is due to the Fischer vs Spassky match not these 2 who don't even fit the criteria you mentioned so sorry you failed in naming even 1 good example

Before Nepo winning the previous Candidates Ding was considered the number 2 in the world, as Caruana wasn’t getting as much attention anymore. I think Ding’s reputation went down because of inconsistency in his performances. But that also happened with Nepo. They’re not far from each other in level, pretty strong and very emotional.

I think Ding was a slight 'underdog' for a couple reasons. He wasn't able to compete in any chess during the pandemic. He couldn't even qualify for Candidates 2022 due to Covid restrictions. FIDE changed some requirements, but he still had to play 26 required games in a month to compete for candidates last minute. In Candidates, he started with a crushing loss from Nepo followed by draws and becomes second to last in the placements. He was able to climb all the way back to 3rd after beating Rapport, Hikaru, and Fabi---and would only compete in Champions because of Magnus forfeiting.

He's an underdog, not because he isn't a strong player by any menas, but because the odds of him even competing in the candidates match were extremely low, let alone him making it to the WC match.

It's not disrespectful because he actually was. Ding is the better chess player, that I have no doubt. But the World Championship is about more than just chess. It's just as much about preparation and experience, two key areas that Ian had a HUGE advantage in. Ian had an army of seconds, many of them strong grandmasters and Vladimir Kramnik himself was part of Ian's team. Ding had just Rapport and (maybe) Xie Jun (former Women's Champion) and zero idea how to actually prepare for a championship match. Ian is also backed by a wealthy Russian who I won't say anything more about because that's not what this is about. But the point is that Ian had the vastly superior team and resources available to him in the months leading up to this event. All this is evident in the way Ding approached this match. He never played the same opening twice and tried to go for offbeat lines to get Ian out of his prep as soon as possible so Ding can actually play against Ian instead of playing against an engine. Oh yeah and did I mention Ding's prep was actually leaked mid-match? IMO it's almost a minor miracle Ding was able to win given what he was up against but he deserved it. He showed absolutely clinical endgame skill despite facing time pressure in the bulk of the games. That he was able to do it in the final rapid tiebreak, pressuring his opponent in an endgame where he simply showed his superiority - after trailing 4 times in the match mind you - you literally couldn't write a better script

Ding was definitely not an underdog skill wise, he might have some issues withstanding pressure compared to other top players though.. but skill wise the man is comparable to Magnus

I disagree, I think for many Russians in sports there is a perception of being falsely humble or backhanded compliments. Especially to an American audience, this can seem weird as American and Russian cultures are quite different when it comes to modesty, being truthful as opposed to being nice, etc. I genuinely don't think Nepo dislikes his peers and instead has respect for many of them.

@@hamyzschidenfeld3215 nepo isn't as humble as Ding to be sure, or I'd say than Fabi, but I think he's more down to earth than a number of other grandmasters. In interviews he doesn't seem to ever try to make excuses for his losses, he owns them. And he's always seemed to me respectful of opponents. Perhaps Ian just more humble than the other Russians. who knows though, I'm basing all this on interviews.

To be fair, the recent performance might be because he needed to hide his prep. From retrospect, in the TaTa steel tournament, he didn't play his openings at all i.e d4 or c4. In the wcc he busted out only queens pawns and reverse Sicilians. Though i still do agree that ding in this match is the underdog considering the prep leak and the (jesus christ almost gave me a heart attack) game 8 miss win.

Underdog is to described when a player is a lot better than the other and expected to win 7-8 times out of 10. Nepo did have an edge before WCC, but it was like 45-55 or 40-60, not big of a gap to call Ding "underdog".
