The last 20 years has seen remarkable innovation in asthma and allergy care - but this progress is not reaching everyone, says board-certified allergist Nancy Joseph, DO. Research shows that asthma, allergies and COVID-19 disproportionately impact African-American and Hispanic/Latino communities in the United States. Each group faces higher rates of emergency department visits and deaths due to asthma than non-Hispanic whites.

Food Allergy
A food allergy is an immune system response that occurs after a person eats a certain type of food. Most food-allergic reactions are mild, but some are potentially life-threatening and may require emergency treatment. The most common food allergens are peanut, tree nuts, eggs, cow's milk, fin fish, shellfish, soy, wheat and sesame. Avoidance of these foods can prevent allergic reactions, but sometimes accidental exposures occur. For severe reactions, the treatment is epinephrine.
