London, the iconic capital of the U.K., stands tall as the world's second-largest financial hub, trailing only behind New York City. Its skyline, dotted with modern skyscrapers and bustling streets, encapsulates Britain's storied history of success.
Boasting the sixth largest GDP in the world, the U.K. shines with an impressive 76% employment rate and a rising happiness index. By many measures, the UK has gotten most things relatively right, except one: housing its citizens.
Rapidly and alarmingly, homelessness is unfolding as the U.K.'s silent epidemic.
So, what's wrong with the Uk's housing market, and why is homelessness becoming such a big problem?

In the UK, individuals living in cars due to partial homelessness result from a complex interplay of factors. High housing costs relative to income, stagnant wages, and income inequality drive this issue. Job loss, weak social support, medical expenses, evictions, and lack of affordable housing also contribute, while systemic problems and inadequate policies further perpetuate the phenomenon.

Considering the present situation, diversifying by shifting investments from real estate to financial markets or gold is recommended, despite potential future home price drops. Given prevailing mortgage rates and economic uncertainty, this move is prudent, particularly due to stricter mortgage regulations. Seeking advice from a knowledgeable independent financial advisor is advisable for those seeking guidance.

Yeah, I want a free house too! Build free/below market housing and they get filled. So build more. Filled. More...filled. How long before the entire city is free housing? No one left to pay for the "free" housing. However, this can actually work. Singapore has kind of done this. 79% of people in Singapore live in public housing. Basically the Singapore gov keeps ownership of land and structures, becomes the main landlord. By providing excellent housing people seem happy to rent from the gov. The gov then has a lot of control over the mix of housing types to build from tiny places for the poor to bigger very nice places for well to do. Collecting rent is cheaper for the gov because a renter can't just skip out on a landlord and get a new place with another landlord. Seems like a pretty great system. But would people in Britain allow such a system? Doubt it.

There are also whole blocks of flats and homes that are owned by non UK citizens, as successive governments have allowed anywhere in the whole world to buy property in the UK. Our country is seen as a very safe place to invest in, with relatively low property taxes. When will any government have the guts to do anything about it? Countries like Singapore, India and Switzerland do not permit foreign buyers of residential property, to secure it for their own citizens.

@zelands 8 ай бұрын
@@Lucienne-zz1sw I will disagree with this to some degree. I am not a citizen of UK, yet I live here. By your logic I should not be allowed to own a home here. In my opinion the problem is not so much who exactly owns it, but how it is used. For one, the short term lets are a plague. Second, where I live, there are a lot of abandoned buildings in prime locations. The owners of those should be taxed heavily, otherwise they have no incentive to do anything about it. Thirdly, the practice of selling council properties to tenants was and is very bad idea. If I recall correctly, only 8% of housing is owned by councils in UK. Say, in Austria it is over 50%, and they dont have any shortages.

Affluence is part of the problem. I have noticed it in Australia, the more affluent Australia has become, the increase in homelessness. Why? Well, the cost of mental health services became so high the Government got out of the industry in a big way in 1985 (The Richmond Report), so a lot of mentally ill that used to be in institutions ended up on the streets. These people are now long term homeless, with virtually no option to get off the streets permanently, other than public housing (some places 15 year waiting lists). Then as we became even more affluent rents went up in a lot of places beyond the reach of welfare people and the lowest income earners. These people often lounge surf, sleep in cars, tents and are now increasingly going into share homes. Affluent countries can't afford their health bills, they can't keep up with infrastructure, they can't keep up with the number of houses needed for existing populations. Then they import people to boost the economy, and this exacerbates the housing crisis. In Australia we are so far behind on housing, we can't make it up even if wanted to. We don't have the tradies, we don't have the resources, we don't have the will, but the Government has the money. Money ain't any good if you don't have the resources and tradies to build. The above is just the tip of it all here in Australia. One of the richest countries per capita in the world.

@@PatsyIsDrunk Thanks for your very well informed comment. We have the same problem in the UK, where we now have a net migration of 700,000 per year, which became totally unsustainable decades ago. We also have significant miss allocation of public housing, leading to very long waiting lists, including families, in real need. We also have a huge problem with anyone in the whole world being allowed to buy housing in the UK, seen as a very safe country to invest in, with relatively low taxes. Many foreign buyers buy new builds, which otherwise first time buyers would ideally buy, so mop up significant amounts of housing that UK citizens cannot buy. These are usually left empty, as appreciating capital assets. The UK government will not even discuss this big problem.

Housing changed from a social and human necessity to a commercial store of wealth and an investment vehicle. In an era where every plot of land and every brick is owned by someone, its impossible to expect people to keep up with the growing mortgage burden or the lack of viable renting options. Social housing fulfilled a niche that unfortunately, has been decreed to be unneeded, even though it successfully saw generations of Britons through in the second half of the 20th century. Thatcherite sell-off should never have been allowed, since something that was kept for public benefit has been turned into a private monopoly. Look up the tragedy of the commons, this is just a repeat of history.

For decades there's been expectation that housing must be an investment which will increase in value. That has to happen, because for many millions of people the house is their retirement plan. If it doesn't gain in value, their future is in peril. That worked for a time, but if average house prices have to go up above inflation by a couple of percent a year, eventually we reach the point of today where housing becomes unaffordable - and as rents are tied to house prices, rents become unaffordable too. But still there's little government can do to get out of the mess they made. They could build huge numbers of new homes - either themselves, or by incentivising private sector developers. They could focus on the lower cost types of home, blocks of flats and rows of three-story terraced housing rather than large individual homes. But if they went that route, then by the law of supply and demand the value of homes would plumet - and just imagine the anger of people who see their vision of comfortable retirement vanish beneath them.

I anticipate a housing market downturn due to the numerous individuals who purchased homes above the asking price, even with favorable interest rates. Despite the low rates, many are now at risk because they lack equity. If housing prices continue to decline, they may face difficulties selling or even risk foreclosure if they can no longer afford the property. This scenario is likely to impact a substantial number of people, particularly with the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

We have a housing crisis now because of mass immigration and we now have tens of millions of non indigenous British people taking up housing stock and hundreds of thousands more immigrants arriving in Britain every year that all need housing. TfL is doing it's best to drive the homeless away, so they can go and be homeless elsewhere, but they keep coming back. From TfLs perspective, the 'solution' is just to get the undesirables to leave and go be someone else's problem.

Yeah. I used to love going into my local city when I was a kid/teen. Now I'm not keen on it because you just constantly get hassled by homeless people. You can't enjoy a meal outdoors because you get snide comments from them as they walk by as if you're to blame for the fact they're homeless. You can't even drink a bottle of water outside without one coming up to you asking for a drink of it. This literally happened to me a few months ago. I told him "I'll pour you some into a cup if you have one" and he said he didn't, so I told him he couldn't have a drink of it. He then proceeded to give me a dirty look. Does he really expect people to let random homeless guys with rotting teeth drink from their bottles? I'm sick of dealing with this type of sh!t every time I visit my local city. Puts me off going.

Nowadays folks love privacy and kids expect a bedroom each, so lodgers are a thing of the past. I lived in a crowded house shared a bathroom with 6 others untill l married and rented a small flat. Helicopter payments for everyone which means a large portion of those working still receive benefits and subsequently pay NO tax. It’s completely insane to think that to escape the benefits trap any individual needs £18.80 p/h working 40hrs which no employer pays as they pay as close to minimum wage as possible and reduced hours. This entire system is doomed having politicians that think this is acceptable while ignoring the burden that puts on the economy.

@@avancalledrupert5130 I agree and I’m aware that the lads in construction 🦺 get those rates and I think the government wouldn’t want the union problem arising again like post war Britain up to the 1990’s so keep them happy hey. With respect to all those NOT in construction which is the vast majority of people from care workers to retail sector jobs etc as you said anyone without a skill or trade, the wages are as close to minimum wage as possible which means none of them contribute to taxes as they don’t earn enough and this is what I am referring to and anyone who cannot see this has their head buried in the sand as it’s the greatest contributor towards the national debt to GDP. That is a problem that is not going to go away without discussion and debate. When we acknowledge that this is an unsustainable problem then we can improve the situation. Not going on those who earn more but by the vast majority who do not, then these problems will reduce maybe even turn around providing prosperity, affordability for the majority of people which will also save children from poverty, homelessness and unemployment. If we have more to spend then we have velocity of money which will help drive the economy. (Economics 101).

The late former prime minister Margaret thatcher was a big admirer of the late Lee Kuan yew the former ruler of Singapore and the man whose administration is credited with making singapore what it is today. Mrs thatcher was actually inspired by a housing scheme in Singapore that was being implemented there, she liked the idea so much she floated it to the British people where they were now allowed to buy council housing stock as first time homes. In Singapore meanwhile they were actually building the homes for this scheme and were not dipping into social housing homes and that was the difference. So in Britain everybody was now buying council houses but the conservatives never built new houses to replace the ones that were being sold and I blame them for this mess. Had they implemented this scheme the way Singapore had by instead building the new homes for sale rather than take council houses, all this problem of homelessness wouldn't be this acute.

The housing crisis in England has been at least 40 years in the making. Right to buy wasnt introduced to help working people get on the property ladder, its an ongoing attempt to privatise social housing, whilst using the property market to drive the otherwise failed economy. There are deep rooted problems in British society that would take a generation to fix, and cost hundreds of billions. The only way to fix the housing crisis is a massive social housing building program not seen since the 1960's

Britain is about class, about privilege. The Crown Estate owns 55% of the land. Go somewhere where you have a path to prosperity, not an iron door in front of you which only opens if you have the right connections.

I never become complacent, and think it couldn't happen to me, in this world. They say, we need more housing, they do. But mainly for the rich, many can't afford it. We have too many empty houses, empty warehouses, and old factories, that could be used to accommodate such people. As a society, we are taking a giant step backwards instead of moving forward. It's getting like the 1930's. Or Victorian times. The trouble is, there are too many beggars, pretending to be homeless, and making a fortune, making it harder to tell who is genuinely homeless, and who is not. Or I'd help them out. That means we'd have about 350,000 fit to live in homes if we didn't demolish any habitable homes in the next decade, enough for a home/flat for each homeless person, and likely spare...!

It seems that the housing problem in the United Kingdom has never been fixed since memorable times, its prices are too high, the worse if you do not have social assistance for housing, it is a disorder, the housing problem in England is like a vicious circle where you spend half your salary in rent on top of the high cost of living, a report says the UK faces a major housing challenge. The same thing happens in the United States with housing problems poverty and unemployment where there are people who live in caravans or pay high rent for a shared room, however in Latin America and other countries the problem is the poverty and lack of opportunities that makes people emigrate and they have to live badly, these are the controversies that life has. In England, the typical home is priced more than ten times the average salary, less than 1% of properties are empty due to the high cost of both rent and sale, and living space for private renters has decreased markedly in recent years. decades.

The govt are being really negligent. No human being should sleep on the streets. Why can’t govt make single units as half way houses until the occupant can be helped back into society, as many areas of the US have done. There should never be sub standard rental properties because each council should regularly inspect any property owned by a landlord. Should make a council inspection law before it is let. Once a tenant is in, they are often afraid to ask for repairs, let alone make a complaint. Yet the govt and councils are doing nothing. They clearly don’t care less.

The UK needs to build and refurbish a huge stock of local authority owned housing for rent. This will put a stop to the tens of thousands of semi-criminal private landlords (often Tory donors and wealthy friends of Tory MPs) who currently exploit vulnerable people by charging extortionate rent in return for substandard housing with damp/mould/dangerous electrics/pests. New legislation needs to be put in place to ensure that local authorities maintain these properties to a decent standard, with stronger penalties for non-compliance, and greater compensation for victims. What is currently called social housing, such as "shared ownership", is not even remotely social housing, it's a colossal scam. We need to keep building more local authority housing until there are no homeless, and nobody comes out of prison with nowhere to live. The most vulnerable should be in local authority sheltered housing with appropriate mental health support.

Notice marriage rates are falling with a high divorce rate. That has created a financial mess for many. Plus we need twice as many housing units for 2 single people rather than 1 couple. That increased demand drives up values and rents. We feel entitled to live by ourselves. That's expensive if you also feel entitled to live in extremely popular areas. Plenty of available homes outside of popular cities.
