Jason Shiga makes some of the smartest comics I've read, but that doesn't keep them from being demented, silly, hilarious and even touching. From the all-ages choose-your-own-time travel -adventure hijinks of Meanwhile to the decidedly adult, perverse and amoral escapades in Demon, from the locked room mysteries at the heart of Bookhunter and Fleep! to the not-quite-Hollywood roadtrip dramedy of Empire State, this video takes a loot at what makes Jason Shiga one of the cleverest, slyest and most playful comics creators I've read, and one of my favourite creators working today.

I fell in love with Jason Shiga when I stumbled upon a copy of Meanwhile at my library when I was 11 years old. Amidst a sea of X-Men and Batman comics I was introduced to a wide new world of creative and innovative stories that truly made me fall in love with the larger medium. I really appreciate you shedding some light on his career!

What a great introduction and gateway - thanks for sharing that story! The innovation involved is indeed terrific, but there's also that great narrative along with it, isn't there? The entertainment not being sacrificed while doing something innovative is one of the things I love about his comics!

If you go to the bookstore scene in Bookhunter, you will find an Easter egg. That is the dinosaur display that says, "Read to Avoid Extinction." This is a sly reference to Phil Yeh and his literacy campaign through comics! You will enjoy the work of Phil Yeh too.

Jason shiga is an old friend of mine... I met him around the time he was doing 'double happiness' and when I read it, it blew my mind! It was surreal to see such great work from someone I saw at the office everyday. I didn't know if he would ever "make it" because his style of art and storytelling wasn't conventional, and he was printing independently... But since then, I've seen indie comics take off, and grown to realize that "making it" is nowhere near as important as simply making. Growing. Mastering your craft... Which Jason has certainly done. Edit: reading the comments has warmed my heart.

I began reading Demon a couple of years ago and pretty quickly dismissed it as dumb, gratuitous violence and obscenity. Oh, and another fantastic video, as always!

Thanks so much! And i can completely understand that reaction - although i felt the mystery set up and 'solved' in the first 100 pages to be immediately arresting, tastes will always vary. I do think you may get more appreciation out of a longer read. It does have a sheen of juvenile-ness, but that's only because its playfulness and glee are so unfettered. As I say here, i ended up finding it scarily smart and even perhaps a little wise. I'd love to know what you think of it if you give it another shot!

Hey Angshuman, you have a real gem of a channel here. Stumbled upon it just a few weeks back and I am hooked since then. From you reccomendations, I loved moon moth, moon cop and some of the Jason stuff I could land my hands on. I need to remind myself not to buy every book you reccomend (not that rich 🙄) but I really want to check out Jason Shiga. You said in one of your videos that From Hell is your favorite Alan Moore. Could you do a video about it or your list of best/favorite Alan Moore? I am pretty new to comics and Watchmen blew my mind. I want to explore him more. And also if you can, one day, please do videos on what is transmetropolitan, my favorite thing is monsters and Nick Dranso’s books. It sounds like I just ordered a list of videos to be made just for me 😉 but it’s just that I have been reading about these books for some time and want to know a bit more before buying them. @ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much and that's a very interesting point you raise! I'll definitely look into if this "breathlessness" is working against me. The reason I edit in this manner is mainly because when I didn't, the 'dead air' and pauses were exactly when I lost viewers, according to my analytics. My retention/ average view time per episode is much better the more attention I pay to the editing, it seems to me. Even with other youtubers, there's a fair amount of attention that I see straying when there are too many 'umms', 'errs' or repeated phrases. Also, I think I am very paranoid about not saying something meaningful - just going "this is so cool, this is so awesome" - so maybe I go too far in the other direction? I like to think that in my videos there are different degrees I use: there's the dense stuff like these "Who is.../ what is...?" spotlights, then there's a bit more casualness in my Recent Reads and Shelf Tour videos, more loose still are the vloggy travel videos, and the loosest of all are the livestreams with zero editing! 😋

Inspired by this video I just read some more of his works and can definitely second that there is a Jason Shiga work for everyone. This is an inventive, unique author for any comics reader to investigate. For Bookhunter, the constant procedural dialogue kind of put me off and the central joke wore thin after a while. But Demon was just delightfully well-told story, with a great balance between textual and visual storytelling, and the grand scope easily justifed the longer page count. Seriously considering a blind buy of Meanwhile now.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
Bookhunter was just the right length for me; any more and I would definitely have felt the fatigue too! Luckily, I liked the explosion of "action spoofery" replacing the procedural spoofery for the climax. I'm glad you liked Demon, which I think is a terrific showcase for the constant inventiveness Shiga is capable of. I think Meanwhile, having hundreds of storylines and endings, falls squarely in between the two works, and I'd be interested in knowing what you thought of it if you try it out. At the very least it's an experience that just cannot be replicated exactly in digital form, which adds a dimension to appreciating it as an object, I feel.😁
@vellu5000
@vellu5000 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftloc So I read Meanwhile over the holidays, and came away impressed and disappointed at the same time. I love choose-your-own-adventure as a concept, so Meanwhile is maybe a victim of high expectations. The storyline is just terrific: trippy and silly and tragic. But the mechanics of storytelling just didn’t agree with me. All too often the connecting pipes were either darkly colored on a dark background, or tiny little nubs connecting adjacent panels, or both. Some of the "clever" bits breaking the rules seemed more like printing errors at first. And the logic of the storyline itself seemed a bit suspect at times, starting with the "professor" allowing innocent-jimmy to use his death machines knowing what happened last time, and working your way up from there. So while unraveling the puzzle box was fun on an intellectual level, the reading experience itself was more like a minor headache at times. But of course, if I didn’t like the book, I would hardly be bothered to criticize in detail at all! I noticed Shiga’s next project, "The Box", seems to be a descendant of Meanwhile. If it ever gets released, I am hoping that the presentation will have more clarity and polish, which I feel is critical in a work of such formal ambition. The Box frankly seems so insanely ambitious that I took it for an april fool’s joke at first... I am trying to think of choose-your-own-adventure comics besides Meanwhile, and there are not that many. Squirrel girl and Deadpool have both had one, but not to the same ambition. Meanwhile is sitting at the top of a very small heap?
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
@@vellu5000 The Box looks really impressive, if - as you say - it ever comes out! I see your points about the production of Meanwhile, although they didn't bother me as much, they could definitely be improved, especially with better colours in the darkest areas. As for the story, I found it pitch perfect perhaps because I was thinking about a particular CYOA book from my childhood in which it was exactly the same setup - a professor next door and the reader as a kid who makes friends with him and uses his machine to time travel. The professor and the kid being such a trope - be it Back to the Future or the Professor Shonku stories in India - that I didn't even think twice about the 'realism' of what is essentially an excuse for glorious madcappery 😁
@vellu5000
@vellu5000 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftloc I too thought Meanwhile was going to be such a story, but it went to suprisingly tragic places. How, exactly, did Shiga manage to get a graphic child suicide into a book marketed "ages 8 and up"? It wasn’t ALL fun and games. But overall the storyline was great.

As wonderful and erudite these stories are, the main issue for me is the art. And I'm not talking about being funny or cartoony in style but about the simplicity approach to the drawing vs the complexity of the argument. It seems to me, that most of web comics leans towards a rapid conclusion with the drawing affair for a immediate consumption in the media, who for most part are not comic savvy. There are many examples of this practice and unfortunately, this author is one of those. Good stories and ideas has they are, they're not accomplished with a proper artist endeavor. I'm sorry, but Jason Shiga doesn't cut out for me. Thanks for the video and keep the good work!
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
I'd respectfully disagree when it comes to Shiga, although I can completely see that inconsiderate and incomplete quality you are talking about in many web comics (or printed comics for that matter). Shiga's work is very detailed and extremely well designed, whether it is proportions, perspectives, weight, velocity or any of the other things that capture the essence and tone of the story he wants to convey. Alongside the formal and spatial design aspects of his figures and pages, he is also one of the most innovative artists when it comes to the sequence of comics, be it passage of time, juxtaposition of shapes, or adjustment in point of view. His rounded cartoony style may not be to everyone's taste, but there is nothing rushed or incomplete about his compositions.
@vellu5000
@vellu5000 3 жыл бұрын
Conciously or subconciously, minimalistic linework is always going to be less impressive at first glance than naturalism. Is the artist drawing cartoony figures because they do not want to draw naturalistic anatomy-or because they cannot? However, reading "Fleep" the cleverness of the writing easily kept my attention, even if the linework may not be to everyone’s taste. And browsing trough "Demon" vol.3, there is an elaborate action sequence with dynamic angles and kinetic sense of motion, so there is that too.
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
@@vellu5000 Speaking for myself, I have always been as impressed with minimalistic linework as I have with detail. It all depends on the end result, what it evokes. I remember seeing that famous Picasso depiction of Quixote and going wow! And there are many things like just the silhouette of Gandhi (or the hair and glasses of Dwight from the Office on a t-shirt) that exemplify the power of conjuring a whole with just a few parts. In fact, that is the essence of the cartoon, the 'amplification through simplification' people like Scott McCloud talk about that I feel give comics such universal power. Conversely I have seen many a detailed portrait and light-shaded sculpture in comics that just looks stiff and wooden and evokes nothing more than a shrug. A thousand lines and five hundred shades could still leave me cold if it doesn't have energy or life, and Charles Schulz squiggles can still fill me with indescribable joy.
@vellu5000
@vellu5000 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftloc Fully agreed on there being graceful minimalistic cartooning, and conversely unimpressive detail-oriented naturalism. But for me, I have never really had an immediate "wow" effect from the former: it has always been a more studied appreciation. I do not really know why that is.

@@vellu5000 Yes, different people respond to different things and these are various spectrums within our own tastes that I am sure we will be exploring and expanding till the day we die (at least I hope so!). I may be the converse of you: for me the appreciation of 'realism' - how almost like a a photograph a painting is, say - is the studied one. I have to know about how difficult it is to make paint behave that way, or how much is needed to replicate shadow in that manner. The cartoon, a simple squiggle through a circle denoting pain or digust is something that connects directly to my brain (or gut) with very little mediation.
