What drives me nuts about measles is the narcissist's prayer anti-vaccine activists go through in order to explain why measles is coming back. It usually goes as follows: It didn't come back. And if it is, it's not a big deal. And if it is, it's not that bad. And if it is, it's not my fault. And if it is, I didn't mean it. And if it is, you deserve it. This is only the case if they're being honest. They usually don't accept fault. They just make conspiracy theories about how it's an election year the "they" are making a panic to win the election.

It really is wild the things people are claiming. I've seen a lot of comments (on other videos) claiming the rise in measles is due to illegal immigration, as if we haven't had illegal immigration for decades while they ignore the anti-vaccine movement's recent surge. Like you said, such commenters are straining to construct a particular narrative no matter the evidence.

The other thing to check on is if your level of immunity if you got the measles vaccination between it's introduction in 1963 and the introduction of the MMR vaccine in 1971. As our cohort moved through life, we have had subsequent outbreaks of measles (like when I was in college in the '80s) because that first version didn't maintain its efficacy over time. Since measles was so contagious, if you were in primary school before 1963, you likely already had the measles, survived and still maintain your immunity. My sister and I both had our titration checked and found out that we no longer had sufficient immunity to measles. We did still have immunity to mumps because we had it as small children, and to Rubella or German Measles because our cohort got a separate vaccine for that in the 5th grade or at age 11. We each got a dose of the MMR vaccine and are now current on our immunity. Since my sister now has a small granddaughter whose mother is a anti-vax nut (my nephew is fighting this in the custody battle) we are all very careful to make sure that we are not bringing anything communicable to my great-niece.

We have improved our scientific knowledge so much that it is now our culture that holds us back. We need to do some serious work to figure out how to produce a culture that doesn't have these deadly, insane ideas in it. Advancing knowledge further will only lead to minor gains while large parts of the population are able to freely reject the fundamental basis of this knowledge.

When EU me was in Japan for an exchange year, I was befuddled by a large measles breakout that shut down schools and universities in early 2007. Apparently primarily because parents in the '90s had skipped out on the second of the two doses. The next couple of years they did a huge two-step vaccination campaign in schools throughout the country, and AFAIK there hasn't been an issue since. Anti-vaxxers would hyperventilate at that.

I got the MMR vaccine through a school program in the 90s (nurses from the local health department came to the school for a day or two and everyone in a given year group was vaccinated a class at a time). Would you recommend getting a booster before traveling to certain areas since the last MMR dose was ~30 years ago?

You can talk to your doc and depending on your situation they can do a blood test to see your lingering level of antibodies. Sometimes they recommend redoing a vaccine (for example, some women thinking of getting pregnant may benefit from this type of blood test and response for antibodies for rubella)
@tessat338

Yes. I asked my doctor to do this when I was scheduled for a blood draw anyway for a normal medical test. My older sister also had her doctor do this. It turned out that we were no longer current on our measles immunization because we got the vaccine after 1963 but before 1971 when the MMR vaccine came out. Your immunity may not be up to snuff if you were vaccinated after 1971 but somehow didn't get the second dose in the schedule. My sister and I each got the MMR vaccine at our doctors' orders as soon as the test results came back. It is people my age who thought that they were fully vaccinated as kids who are now carrying the infection around the world without knowing it. To us it just seems like a bad cold because we still have SOME immunity, just not enough not to transmit measles to other people, especially children. The other thing that we soon-to-be-retirees need to get up to date on is pertussis or whooping cough. For us it is a bad week. For an infant or a very young child, it could be deadly. If adults are getting their scheduled tetanus vaccinations, then the pertussis is included in the Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus vaccine. Remember kids, there is no such thing as herd immunity against the tetanus soil bacteria.

I’m so disappointed to see that my home state doesn’t have good vaccination rates. Usually they are much more reasonable about this stuff. Where I live currently, which is in Ohio I would expect them more to be anti-VAX (which they are) we do currently have a measles outbreak so that’s fun

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ~ Isaac Asimov The corollary to this position is that "my mistake is just as good as your choice."

Can you do a future video about total apathy for people that don't get vaccinated? I have to say that as a vaccinated person, I couldn't care less about people that get measles after they're not vaccinated. Even worse, a part of me enjoys it. Am I a monster? Possibly. I know as a vaccinated person I could still get a severe case of measles, or any other disease. But it's almost worth it to see people that aren't vaccinated get sick. Just being honest. A future video on my particular view of these things would be appreciated
