Why Is NASCAR's Attendance Up?

NASCAR attendance is up! While we may criticize other aspects of the sport it is clear just by looking at the stands that more butts are in seats compared to a couple years ago. Looking back only to 2019, the last full season before the COVID pandemic, you could see NASCAR struggling to get people interested enough to show up. Yet now, in 2024, many tracks are hitting multi-year highs and sometimes even highs that had not been hit in well over a decade. So, why is NASCAR's attendance up?

I think the F1 series on Netflix helped people get into motorsports in general. Prior to that show, I didn't watch any motorsports. I started watching F1 in 2021 and loved it. After 2 seasons of Max winning everything, I became bored and decided to watch the 2023 Daytona 500 and became a huge NASCAR fan since. I watch trucks, xfinity, cup and attend the local track here in Monroe, WA that runs late models too. I'm sure others have had a similar experience. I fell in love with the history and spent a few months catching up and find your channel and Eric Estepp. Planning on getting out to the Daytona 500 2025

As someone who normally goes to race tracks that have struggled with attendance in the past, the 1 race a year strategy so far has worked tremendously. Hopefully some other tracks that have 2 dates will soon follow suit. I think having more variety in the schedule and bringing the sport into untapped markets will pay off in the long-term, they first, however, have to improve the racing product.

A lot of people might laugh at what you're saying, BUT: Keep in mind, in the early days, televised sports were pretty much treated as infomercials meant to encourage viewers to come out to watch in person. Somewhere along the line, more effort was put into the TV angle because of how much money networks were suddenly throwing at the sports. I won't go so far as to say NASCAR or any other sports organization would directly sabotage their telecasts now, BUT, given how traditional TV is on life support now and you just can't expect that money to keep coming in forever... maybe sacrificing the quality of TV broadcasts in favor of encouraging more ticket sales isn't a terrible idea.

I lost interest once Jeff Gordon retired. Then a local farmer down the street from me in Alva, FL Ross Chastain got a opportunity in some better equipment and starting competing against the Hendrick and Gibbs guy and does not back down one bit when all of NASCAR is against him. Gives it all for his team look what he did when he rode the Wall at Martinsville to get in the Championship 4. Who else going to do that besides maybe the late great Dale Earnhardt! He’s made things way more exciting with his talent and aggressive driving when most of the drivers just want to be buddy buddy on and off the track.

The sport is healing…. Plus, after Harvick retired, I jumped on the Buescher train. Dude is humble consistent driver. Also, I think Covid helped NASCAR. NASCAR isn’t a c*nt about people uploading their races, and they’re recommending them to anyone who watches Motorsports or has a interest. I think that sparked people’s love and interest back into the sport. IRacing also has a impact of people wanting to come back. Covid had people buy sim racing equipment.

The Netflix documentary really helped I think. And the racing for the most part has been banger this season. Also I feel you don’t go broke attending a race. You are still allowed to bring your own beverages and food (long as it’s in a compatible cooler) in the track. I can tell you as a Braves fan you will go broke at Truist park attending a Braves game with ridiculous prices on stuff

I am not a racing “purist”, I watch on Saturday and Sunday for the entertainment. I was part of the interest bloom in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, I was also one of the people who disappeared early in that decade. It stopped being entertaining, it was just too predictive, how many times can you watch the same few people win week in and week out. Don’t misunderstand me, I respect that these drivers and teams work incredibly hard to dominate the sport, but that doesn’t make it “entertaining”. I tune in to be entertained on Sundays, and the race in Texas was entertaining, despite yet another Henrick car win. NASCAR is supposed to be thrilling, exciting, it is supposed to be drivers barely hanging on to their cars while racing on the edge, and yes, the bumping, banging and spectacular crashes are part of what I’m here for. Hendricks and Gibbs are extremely successful organizations, but they are boring as hell, and that is by design, I don’t follow a sport for “boring as hell”. If NASCAR wants the ratings bubble it once had, they need to give us more Texas Speedway type weeks and less Martinsville weeks.

I believe the slump started when the cars started becoming a decal package. Now more people prefer middle of the road, cookie cutter cars. Just look in a parking lot. Black, white and silver. Go to the handy corporate race car store, drop your cash and pick your wrap package ooh, don't forget your receipt. Cars out of the race cause they bump something, c'mon. People are coming back to watch because they know, soon, there'll be nothing to see.

Might be going to Michigan with a friend, I never went to a Nascar race there but the very last Indycar one which I was too young to remember in 2007. I have always been a fan of Stock Car racing as a whole and the past 2-4 years have been going to my local Dirt Track every other weekend with the same friend. The reason I never went to MIS or even Indianapolis was because of how expensive the tickets got when I was a kid, so instead went to Butler/Angola Motor Speedway growing up. Eventhough the ontrack/"playoff" product can be better, I'm 20 and seeing that I could actually go to a race like I've always wanted to just to experience what it's like finally can happen. I think there are others with the same statement as me and that's why I think Nascar's attendance is going up.

Nobody wants to admit that the new car is creating exciting racing. Smaller teams are winning races (Trackhouse for example). And it’s helped the mighty American small block gain recognition globally again (Shane Van, Garage 56), as well as making those mid-sized ovals interesting again thanks to independent suspension, and the 6 speed gearbox meaning shifting comes into play

Like I said in an earlier video: NextGen truly is NextGen. Ever since it hit the pavement in LA 2 years ago, it attracted people from all over the country looking to see how they would race at a stadium. Then the Auto Club race received universal acclaim due to the car putting on competitive racing. They kept on with that momentum with subsequent races with similar results (Kansas, Charlotte, Talladega, etc). It was also no coincidence that it also rolled out before the 75th anniversary of NASCAR. They pulled all the stops to commemorate the occassion. The Clash provided strong entertainment for the casuals, most of the tracks were sellouts due to how historic or prestige the moment was (Auto Club's last race, which was also the 25th anniversary of the track, Chicago Street Course, North Wilkesboro returning after 28 years, among other things). Also, the appearance of a "car that only turns left" at Le Mans rose the stakes even higher, so high to the point F1 failed miserably at the Vegas street race and tried to start $#!+ with NASCAR for its failure to surpass Chicago. Now Iowa is gonna be added to the list (instead of Rockingham), The Brickyard is back to its rightful layout, and the close finishes against nature and time make the news (sort of). That being said, if they play their cards right, it can only go higher Edit: Also because I hate the Fox half of the schedule for how CRINGE it is I started to go to races more often

Motorsports in general is having an attendance bump. F1 has 300 to 400k over 3 days during their 3 race weekends in the US (why people pay that much, I don't know, F1 is expensive). Indycar despite it's struggles in the TV ratings is just smashing out these 10 and 20 year highs in person attendance at it's road and street courses + Indy 500 ticket sales are on pace with the 100th year anniversary year numbers (attendance is still a question at other ovals). IMSA events have been absolutely packed, I think Sebring and the Rolex 24 had attendance records.

I think when a lot of the drivers like Gordon, Stewart, Carl Edwards, and Dale Jr retired, that’s when a lot of old fans went away from the sport. Now with the new influx of drivers, you have new fans and more fans coming to the track more. Plus NASCAR branching out into new markets like LA and Chicago has a lot of new fans coming in as well.

Honestly ive slowly started coming back, but im still disappointed at the lack of horsepower compared to years in the past. I think nostalgia is some of it for me. Its nice to see a variety of tracks, i think NASCAR was lacking in personality for a while. Boring drivers, slower cars, the same tracks with the same finishes. Those things are slowly changing. I hope horsepower does a little too.

It did seem like there were a lot of popular drivers that all suddenly retired in just a couple years. Jeff Gordon in 2015, Jr, Biffle and Stewart in 2016, Kenseth and Johnson after 2020, Kurt suddenly after 2022. It all felt like so many just one after another from 2015 until now and they were all the biggest drivers of the 2000s so there was a huge drop in fans that stopped watching cause their favorite drivers left

There are several tracks that struggle with attendance for various reasons. If you look at the 2021 fall Richmond race it was at 90% capacity but starting with day racing and the continuing shitty ontrack attendance has dropped off a cliff. It's really unfortunate and this is one of those markets where NASCAR needs to address. Las Vegas is another market that blows my mind. The crowd's there do not look good on TV. As good as the racing is at Kansas, they're not getting close to selling out either. New Hampshire and Sonoma also struggle. I think those tracks also struggle to put on good racing with the Gen 7 car. Something else? Todd people like to dog on is the Charlotte roval. That race still gets more people than the last two fall oval races. That's how far that race fell. The 2022 crowd was their largest crowd crowd for that event. Even after listing off the places that are struggling, NASCAR is in a good spot and I do believe things will even turn around for those tracks eventually. I think NASCAR will get this new gen 7 car figured out

Daytona needs to bring back the backstretch seating again. It doesn't have to be huge. Just built a medium sized section of grandstands back there, and I promise they would sell out every year for both races.

I'll say. I'm a fraction of the reason. I was named after Petty and my only memories of Nascar was my dad watching every sunday as a kid. As an adult i started watching because everything else i like has been ruined by wokeness. I like that it still feels like america, I enjoy the national anthem. I like the sound of gas powered machines. I needed that like therapy right now.

The current car and package isn’t perfect, but the racing is better than where it was precovid. As someone who tried to maintain interest after Jeff Gordon retired, it wasn’t until this current Gen car that I started enjoying NASCAR again. There have been some positive changes and I hope they continue stringing good decisions/changes to bring this great sport back to its heyday

It all comes down to five reasons. 1. Interest in NASCAR picking back up again 2. NASCAR cutting races for most tracks from two to one 3. NASCAR expanding into new areas 4. A new young generation 5. The willingness to give NASCAR a second chance

I like the diversity of tracks, which is why I have no problem with road/street courses and flat/short tracks. The cookie cutter mile and a half speedways shouldn’t have two dates. Spread the wealth around. Only tracks that should have two dates are Daytona, Talledega, Charlotte, Bristol, Martinsville and Darlington. Spread the rest out and don’t be afraid to try other street races.

You need to take a broader look at it. In person attendance is up for racing across the board. IndyCar has had horrible tv ratings this year but great attendance numbers. Every IMSA race has record attendance. And so forth.

I think Nascar needs to expand to 40 races, with perhaps back to back races being a thing. Double Pocono, Double Dover or Double New Hampshire. Bring back man vs machine and make drivers have to make their equipment last.

I believe that attendance is back up because the racing has gotten better over time, especially at the intermediates and super speedways. What's not to like at many of those tracks? Another reason would probably be that some tracks are going to one date only, making it more of a major event when the series comes to their town. The next job is to have a booming Market that brings us back to what could a Renaissance era, meaning that it's not quite as big as it was in the early 2000s, but it's very close.

It’s probably a placebo, but I feel like the more packed a race is the better it is. Pocono last year is a good example. Racing wasn’t anything amazing but the atmosphere made the race feel prestigious (that plus the drama at the finish).

I tend to agree. Speaking of my homecountry, with F1 we are not having a really amazing race in Interlagos the a few years. But the crowd makes the event better. We are very festive and we pack the track friday, saturday and sunday.

Thought it's just the design of the tracks and a unique challenge to having so much seating around tracks, even 100k people in one spot for 3 hours isn't an easy feat for most things, and to do it for like 30 weeks in a year?! (Including blistering heat and humidity days, 40F days, rain delay days) Incredible. Also the population growth factor and millennials coming of age (30 - 45 year olds) and the elder gen z coming of age, would be impressed if they had age stats to show if the NASCAR crowd is skewing younger. Been to Indy multiple years, great...except for parking, and parking in folks yards etc, and the general use bathrooms...

Not having Brian France around helped, as did COVID making everyone appreciate what they had. Also, some of the old Gordon, Stewart, Earnhardt Jr. fans either coming back or being replaced with new fans has played a factor. If they can only get rid of the points system. Make a season long points system where the winning means more than it did in the Winston Cup days would help. People understand legitimacy. The current system doesn't have that... Remember how we were all super excited when Ryan Blaney won in 2023? Me neither! Everyone just said... Oh, that sucks... On to 2024.

Call me a pessimist, but I think some part of it is the one race date, and the other is that racing is becoming/has become the “in-thing” right now. Other than getting in and out of the track, it is a blast to be at a race and that might interest people. I just hope that interest doesn’t dip in the next few years when the new in thing is here. As for the racing, I was young when I started watching racing in the early 2000’s with my parents. Been a fan since I can remember, and we all see how the racing is now… but the new fans may not know any better because they weren’t around for the peak of the sport, or the peak of racing, in my opinion.
