Why is Peacemaker So Good? || Peacemaker season one, the latest from James Gunn, is one of the best shows from DC Comics on HBO Max. And considering I wasn’t expecting Peacemaker to impress me with how dope it was, my surprise not only helped me understand why Peacemaker works, but also realize why Peacemaker is needed. And a lot has to do with how the show handles John Cena’s Christopher Smith after the events of Suicide Squad, the addition to White Dragon, and the new original character Adebayo.

Also, if DC Comics doesn't give Adebayo the Harley Quinn treatment and make her and her wife canon in the comics, we gon' fight!

24:24 I hated that Adebayo ratted out her mom. That was definitely what I was worried about with James Gunn. He clearly hates Amanda Waller. She's a complex character just like Luther but Luthor is a very privileged rich cis white man who can get in and out of prison any time he wants. James Gunn humiliated her character twice; once at the end of Suicide Squad and again here. Sorry but black women wouldn't do that knowing the justice system doesn't treat us fairly. And Amelia Harcourt should've died.

@@Jonathanking88 Actually calling Amanda a supervillain proves how little you know about her character. She isnt a supervillain at all. She is a ruthless government agent that does what she does for her country and the protection of what she deems worthy. She isnt Luther at all. Not even close.
@PaulSmith-nb6md

@@Jonathanking88 You mean she forces mass murderers and actual supervillains to do things for the government under threat of death? You realize our government does the same thing right? So is America a supervillain now? You misunderstand what the Suicide Squad is. The villians who are out there dont have rights as normal people. They kinda lost that when they decided to be supervillains. She isnt Thanos. She is Lex. She actually has government permission to do everything she does. You just dont like it. That doesn't make her a supervillain. If she was evil and did things for evil then she would be a supervillain. Thanos logic was fundamentally flawed at its core. It was insane. He didnt care who died so long as his will was established and he followed no rules but his own. Amanda doesnt have that kind of pull.

@@Jonathanking88 Except that isnt what I said at all now is it? It is cute to put words in my mouth but that doesnt exactly prove your point. Neither dies it discredit mine. I asked was America a supervillain now? What I didnt say was America does no wrong. So it wasnt really a gotcha moment. You may have percieved it that way but that is because you had no logical argument against it. That is why you avoided answering the question and instead out words in my mouth. It isnt a matter of morality when Task Force X uses supervillains to do good things. As stated it is a matter of perception and since she indeed is government sanctioned, she is no more evil than society allows. Which by definition isnt evil as she isnt going against the rules established by her higher authority. At best you could call her a necessary evil but fact of the matter is she is taking universally bad people and using their skills for her country....with its permission to do so. Hitler was in power, Amanda is subject to higher ruling. Big difference. Fact of the matter is, you may consider her actions evil but that doesnt make her evil. Society decides that and in the DC universe she isnt considered a villian so if nothing else....that is my gotcha moment.

What's really interesting to me (As a writer at least) is how we didn't care about Rick Flagg in the first Suicide Squad movie only to make us care enough to make his death impactful to us AND Chris. Shout out to cast and crew for putting in that work.

I really thought the idea of generational difference when it comes to outlooks on race, sexual orientation or sexual identity being explored in the way was great. I think it is hard to come to terms with a parent that has negative opinions about something that doesn't directly impact you. Standing up and challenging those ideas are especially hard.

Peacemaker honestly caught me completely off-guard. Cena really delivered far more than I thought he would. And Gunn letting us watch a bunch of skinheads get mowed down was a feel good treat. I was shocked at how Gunn was able to really make me feel the impact of Auggie's death. Like I was very happy he was dead but I was very sad that Chris ended up being the one to shoot him.

I think there’s also an interesting meta text here that isnt discussed all that much. While watching the show, I couldnt help but think back to when James Gunn was in hot water for some old tweets. While the subject matter of the tweets and the themes of racism and white libertarianism arent 1 to 1, I think you could view Peacemaker (character and show) as James Gunn kinda reflecting on not just his old tweets, but the kind of dark humor he had.

Exploring morally questionable and problematic characters is my jam. If I have to suffer through all these heavy metal heros from the 1980s, the least that can be done is show them crying into their bed covers as the weight of all their "fuck yeah!!" actions weigh on their shoulders.

@@Readus101 I'm so glad Bautista and Cena have a much deeper and more diverse range of characters they can play than older generations. When I read up on how HARD Sylvester Stallone had to work to be treated as a real actor, or when I think of how Arnold was treated for being European and compare that to how hard we defend Gal Gadot, I just can't help but feel bad for these men who have been so type-casted, dumbed down. Vin Diesel went to freakin' college and Anthony Mackie is a Shakespearean actor. I'm thinking about all of this because of Judge Dredd. Stallone had a 3-picture deal and never made another Judge Dredd movie, but if that deal was happening now, when directors aren't deconstructing macho characters because they hate them, but because they love them, I would think he would have been up for it. I'm not saying I don't love dumb fun, but I don't think these guys or the audience members they represent deserve to be treated like drooling trolls. (All we need now to complete this maturing of action stars once and for all is for more stunt doubles and stunt coordinators to have power and access, like the brilliance of John Wick.)

The Suicide Squad and Peacmaker really play into each other well. Having finished the series and rewatching the movie, I have a new appreciation for certain scenes, particularly the bus scene where Bloodsport and Ratcatcher and talking about their fathers. I hadn't thought about the "Magical Negroe" trope at all. I had considered why Adebayo was the one who confronted...Chris...(I keep calling him Peacekeeper or Cena in my head), but she seemed to be the only one who actually could. She was/is an outsider to the group (relatively speaking; they're all basically new to each other). She's not an Agent. Murn and Harcourt may have thought about Chris's well-being, but they wanted him healthier so he could do the job, an aspect of thinking soldiers and like-minded generally have. The mission comes first. Economos was not particularly close to Chris, and frankly, he's too much of a weenie to confront anyone unless he absolutely needs too. He might think Chris needs help, but he won't be the one to actually tell him so. Leave a pamphlet in his luggage maybe, but actually confront him, no. Vigilante...yeah, no. Adebayo is the daughter of Amanda frickin' Waller, younger than everyone else on the team, more idealistic than anyone else on the team, and right from the beginning, she had a way of attacking all the other's morals and procedures in a way a more rational, or at least way less confrontational people, that was aimed more to get them to consider other options. Even though most of her observations and judgements tended to be incorrect in the space of "The Mission," they made more sense when being attributed to the parts of the mission which were more about how the other characters thought or acted that were not oriented on doing the job.

GOD I love this show for these reasons!! But also i think that there's another reason why Leota HAS to be the one to make him really come around. His traumatic toxic masculinity makes it so all men are competition or at the very least someone you must perform to, and most women as someone you must pursue sexually. Even though he is also interested in men sexually, he cannot even originally let himself cry in front of them. He first is friendly to Leota bc she is a woman who has a ring on. She is not someone he has to pursue or perform for. When he finds out she's a lesbian, he opens up further bc it is even more clear he doesn't have to perform or pursue AND she is also in the community he is in, but has never really been able to join due to family stuff. So on top of their similar family situations, Leota's queerness is integral in getting Chris to connect with other people. This show is in part, about the power of queer friendships

This may be a pretty controversial take, but I think White Dragon should've used the N word...like, the "hard R" N word......casually. Yes, it's gross and uncomfortable, but it's also real for this kind of person. Not only that, but someone like Chris excusing or hand waving away this kind of language early in the season would feel real and relatable to people with those kinds of parents.

I was surprised how much I’d get attached to Peacemaker! I kinda hated him in the movie lmao, even if he was so well played by John Cena. Re: race I was glad we got a main Asian character! Plus Judomaster who’s probably coming back & Jamil, who’s fun comedic relief. I liked that they brought up race in a way that felt realistic and thoughtful. But I hope in the future they do this more in a way that offers Asian characters more agency & maybe some humor, since in this season it seemed like the white characters’ race would be brought up in serious stuff (ie Chris being related to White Dragon, etc), while Asian characters almost always had their race brought up when being insulted. Like I get that it’s because James Gunn is a white dude writing a white dude changing himself for the better, so he wouldn’t want to overstep in making jokes for example. But as a mixed white/Asian writer I can already think of some ways Asian characters can talk about their race that give them more agency, and can be serious or comedic. Idk, I think that’s a thing for me to work on as a fanfic writer & creator of original work 😅

I just discovered your channel, and am looking forward to watching more of your content. Full disclosure: I'm old, white, straight, Southern, male - I check all the boxes. That being said, the thing that I loved most about Peacemaker was that it showed the struggle of trying to reconcile what you've discovered is right with what you were taught in childhood was right. It's not easy to shrug off that early programming. Having Leota going through a similar struggle took what could have been dismissed as an oblivious white man trope and made in a universal human struggle for all of us with problematic parents. That is was able to do this without shying away from white male privilege is a real accomplishment.

Adebayo has too much agency and character development to be a Magical Negro. I do believe Gunn needs to keep developing her so she doesn’t become one later. That’s why I hope they also flesh out her wife so she isn’t just a hurtle to Adebayo’s work with Peacemaker.

I gotta disagree there. I think that is pretty much where she fits in because she doesn't fit the group. She isnt just an outsider. She is supposed to be Wallers daughter that apparently takes nothing from her mother at all yet works for her. Personally I think she is one of the worst parts of the show. She doesnt come off as intelligent or really capable. Just lucky and surrounded by people picking up her slack. I want her to be more developed

I saw Jessie Gender’s video on it (which kindly fills impatient rubes like me in on the major points of the suicide squad films) and I thought hm, that does sound like a show I’d like. Actually, I thought Danielle Brooks? Why didn’t you say so, let’s go watch it. I love her. I really enjoyed watching Peacemaker and Adabayo’s journeys. Heck, I liked all of their journeys. I felt so sad for Economos! I think my favorite part was how it played to my empathy. I grew up around a lot of dudes like Peacemaker and White Dragon. It’s easy to say we should just get rid of them all, but wouldn’t I rather they became better people who worked to undo some of the damage they’ve done? Everyone on that show was dying for community, and they found it with people they never expected to like. That’s a nice message. I like that.

What I liked about Peacemaker was the fact the show was actually willing to dunk on Christopher Smith to make it's point. So much of superhero media doesn't want to let its character's be genuinely pathetic, that it undercuts the story, but Peacemaker uses the fact its titular character is clearly a loser to tell improve Smith as a character. Peacemaker is a total douchebag and a murderer. But rather than blame "society" and make it not his fault, it let Christopher's own behavior and the specific behavior of his familial situation, be the cause of his misery.

The fact that there was a good person in peacemaker despite his beliefs and upbringing that would occasionally show itself and the fact that they all become friends and get to know eachother is actually really cool. Even thought the humour in this show wasnt always my cup of tea i really really loved Christopher's arc.The show was his journey into becoming a better person as opposed to just being like "He does bad things but he feels sad :( dont you feel sad for him too?". I find stories like these cathartic where people are shitty and have to work and go through things to deconstruct the toxic things they were taught and to shed the walls they learned to put up (Like how Chris would make fun of others and use humour to drive them away). Also loved Adebayo as a character! I was afraid she'd be the emotional support black woman in the show, but she was so much more than that! She was her own person and Danielle Brooks is so charming when she plays her i was even willing to forgive her manipulations hahaha When it comes to a comedy show that explored toxic masculinity and the expectations put upon men to behave a certain way, i def recommend our flag means death. It's most subtle about it than peacemaker but i rly love how it was handled.

To some degree I had a similar experience with the Watchmen TV series. Nothing in the prepremier publicity made me think it was going to be any good (I assumed it would look good but that's about it). Unlike many in the audience, evidently by responses I've seen, I knew about Greenwood before going in but I truly didn't think they would touch upon it let alone make it as significant a part of the narrative or that it would educate so many of the show's viewers about what happened.

I had similar feelings about the series after watching The Suicide Squad - where are they going to take this character and why should I care? But I enjoyed this season a lot (hooked me right after the dance opener). I really appreciate your analysis of Adebayo's character and how they had a similar growth path. Cena really tackled this role and had the strength for fight scenes but vulnerability for the emotional realization scenes, plus the comedy chops for in between. As for a show that surprised me, I think Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was a good example of having a name and premise that implies one thing, but then flips it and tackles mental health issues and relationships.

It took a lot of convincing for me to sit down and find out it’s a delightfully clever comedy… I have a very good sense about what’s gonna aggressively stink, to a point where when I feel almost SURE it’ll be truly awful, it almost always is… but even I’ve been wrong a handful of times, and that was one of em.

I really like the character Peacemaker, because it shows you how people who were meant to raise and protect you can also be the same people who put hate in you, when it wasn't in you, that it's not your true nature. I think with a lot of people raised this way we need to give them a blueprint and pathway out of it. With his story, I'm reminded a lot of the real story of Prussian Blue, how their parent's raised them to be white supremacists and how they are finding their way out of that. For this kind of hate to end, we need people able to break the cycles that their parents lead them down. It's not easy, and this isn't meant to excuse their behavior (Though with kids, we can't hold them accountable for their actions like that), however once out, they are the ones who are going to be pulling others out of hate, since they are the ones who know it and speak their language. They can be the heroes that we need and we need to show them that.

I'm a really big fan of James Gunn but I was very skeptical of the show, but not only do I think it's good, it's my favorite comic book series to come out as of recent.

I love Peacemaker,it has become one of my Favorite Series from Nowadays and to keep things in Mind this Series is way better than Black Lightning since one of the Reasons is that Annisa and Grace are Terrible and Toxic People compared to Adebayo and her Wife being Healthy and Better, also I highly recommend you watch Norbit,Megamind, and Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! To see something Deep.

First time I saw Peacemaker, I was like, "we really tryna give Peacemaker a redemption arc right now? Out of all the members of suicide squad, this is the one we're going with? Ok..." Honestly, though, DC live actions seem to only be especially good when it's the villian/antihero as the main character and I can live with that as long as DC knows this also.

I disagree about one thing...and it's even mentioned in the show so I feel very justified in saying... You can't divorce neo nazism from antisemitism and I don't think writers should feel justified acting as if antiblack racism replaced antisemitism. And they certainly shouldn't make a show about a character who is openly antisemitic and not include a single named jewish character. There's an easy fix too, and that's make Adebayo or Harcourt Jewish. Literally all they had to do.

I haven't seen the show; so to clarify, does the show present/mention anti-blackness as like "the new antisemitism"? 'Cause if it downplays antisemitism, I totally agree that it needs to push back in some way. As a regular Knowledge Fight listener, I can confirm that a lot of neo-Nazi rhetoric and belief still take points from old propaganda shit like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

I loved this show, and the analysis was great! I have nothing else to say, just feeding the algorithm 😊. The only thing I’d add Chris’ dad was racist, xenophobic, AND misogynistic - just to add to his disgusting traits lol

I watched like 3 episodes of Peacemaker and the level of misogyny he displayed really turned me off... Then I watched half this video and gave it an other shot... And ya it makes sense that he is like that cause white supremacist ideologies are famously misoginist.... So.... I still can't say that I love it.... But I'll watch a season 2 to see growth.

I liked a lot of how the characters were developed, but I think unfortunately james gunn also undermined a lot of the individual story arcs by also having the protagonists genocide an entire species. It also doesnt help that he leaned into antisemitic stereotypes about "elites controlling governments".

And the trend of characters trying to solve problems like climate change being villains...the imagery also is so nationalistic. It took two steps forward then more steps back in those areas
