Because salt is transparent and light goes through continuous and numerous reflections and refractions between the crystals before finally reaching the eye. You can watch the next video in your subscription feed now

Wait up.. So the salt cubes don't act a prism splitting the white light into colors - bouncing it out as rainbows. How cool would that look, walking on rainbows - literally. Damn it.

If you made one prism of salt it probably would do that, but with a thousand tiny prisms together, all the rainbows get mixed back together into white.

You could say the same for anything clear. If you shatter glass into tiny bits, it would look white like salt. Ice cubes, snow, etc. It doesn't look clear because it's not smooth at our human macro scale. Salt as a smooth surface would probably look no different than glass

I get the part where it's see through, but how are the edges of those crystals white? Not completely transparent there right?

Hmmmm, she said that salt looks white because the orange color is refracted by the crystals of salt to the point where it looks white? I'm no scientist but I don't think she is entirely correct. She is correct in saying that salt looks white because light is reflected back to our eye, but it is not the reflected light off the orange background but the original white light from the sun getting reflected off the rough edges of the salt - before it even has a chance to reach the orange background - that makes salt look white. Just my $0.02

They spend the entire video beating around the bush, then finally at the very end tell you the answer. It's just another corporate television show trying to grab audience attention for as long as possible with pointless material so that they make more money. Thumbs down.
