Levi says sodastream puts carbon monoxide into the water, but it is in fact carbon dioxide. There is a pretty huge difference since carbon monoxide is poisonous.

Hey, I feel you missed a couple (European) points. Here in Germany / Europe, for many people fizzy water is a household staple. We drink it all the time as is or mix it with juices and more. Really a lot of people, go and buy like five to ten crates of water once a month (or one to two crates a week) at their local beverage or supermarket. That means lots of heavy bottles, which is just massively inconvenient and also environmentally unfriendly for all that shipping around of heavy water. A soda stream solves that issue. If you calculate it over it's lifetime it's a bit more expensive than the really cheap supermarket water, but most people don't even care about price - the convenience of not having to lug around all that water, having empty bottles all the time and just generally having sparkling water whenever you like is just amazing. The CO2 bottles can be exchanged at every supermarket, so you just buy two in the beginning and then you always have a full one in reserve. It really replaces sugary sodas for me and a lot of people I know - which is also just so much more healthy but in a very low-effort way. So many people I know just have Sodastream bottles everywhere in the flat/house/office and everyone just has "theirs" which they carry around and drink from. I generally really like your videos, but this one seemed a bit too centric on the Pepsi and canned water jokes. Which are funny, just maybe shouldn't be the main talking point here. I believe strongly from experience that sodastreams can be a great piece of kit for convenience, health and probably also the planet. Would have loved to hear these perspectives in a more nuanced way. That the company is shilling out is nothing new, but I feel the product is still great, and I feel that's the most important. Here in Europe I grew up with a Soda Stream in the 90s and obviously I bought one for myself after moving out. For me the biggest advantage is not having to carry crates of water from the shops home. The ecologic and economic savings are just an added benefit.

I used to buy bottled sparkling water before buying a sodasteam and now I no longer have to waste plastic bottles every week. The gas canister refill + return is great and makes this essentially waste free!

Here in Argentina we have “soderías”, they are basically little factories near neighborhoods that bottle carbonated water in reusable soda siphons and also deliver them door to door by demand. So, they arrive to your place and deliver you your usual amount of soda siphons (full) and then you give them back your empty ones. We’ve been doing this for generations now. Though it’s pretty common to us, the idea might sound weird to foreigners 😂 feel free to look it up if you like. Love the channel!! 🙌 keep up the good work 💪

Another interesting perspective on how SodaStreams can help us be more environmentally friendly is for those of us who lives in areas where we can drink our tap water. Having a SodaStream cuts back the amount of liquid (which is pretty heavy) being transported, since we already have the water available in our houses. While PepsiCo is undoubtedly a problem, their purchase made their sodas available as taste additives for carbonated water, which is really nice for those of us that likes their sodas.

My family has a SodaStream as in the UK they did a thing with the relaunch where you could trade in an old machine for a new one (we dug my gran’s out of the back of her cupboard). We use it all the time, but it didn’t really replace us buying fizzy water, more just gave us the option to have fizzy water whenever we wanted it. And yes we call it fizzy water.

The plastic bottles from Sodastream ironically also have a best-before date printed on and usually have to be replaced after 3 to 4 years. At least here in Germany. This is due to the pressure exerted on the bottles when the water is “bubbled”. According to Sodastream, the bottles should not exceed their useful life. There is no such problem with the glass bottles. By the way, here in Germany, water with spring carbonation from areas of the Volcanic Eifel or other volcanic areas is absolutely natural. There are actually fountains along hiking trails here where you can fill your own bottles and drink bubbly water directly.

This „trend“ is kind of hilarious to me honestly ^^ my parents own a soda stream since at least 20 years (we live in Germany) and use it every day for all the water we drink 👍🏻

In France, you don't have to send your empty canister back. You can just go to your basic supermarket and if they sell full canister they will take your empty one and deduce the price of the canister from your purchase. Also wanted to point out an advantage of those machines is that you can control how bubbly you want your water to be. Like I'd put less for drinking it straight out of the bottle than for making mojitos for example

My soda stream canister lasted ~6 months and I really carbonate my water. I was drinking 1-2 seltzers per day so definitely a money saver. I'd also like to think it's better for the environment especially since they refill the canisters.

This video is absolutely perfect timing. I just did the rough math with my coworkers who drink up to 4 cans of seltzer a day. The cost per 12oz of a can is about 42 cents where as 12oz of a soda stream using bubly flavoring will run you 31 cents. At that rate they would save about $120 a year. I had not thought about using a large CO2 with an adaptor. Levi and the team, please look into "recyclable plastic bags" I just talked about them briefly in my last video and I think it's important that more people know about them and how ridiculous they are

I think the initial values of the company--eliminating plastic bottles and cans--still hold true. It's unfortunate that the money is going to PepsiCo, but PepsiCo's practices would remain the same with or without the Soda stream. The intensions of the product and the benefits still remain, regardless of the owner.

Especially in Germany and other European countries people tend to drink more sparkling water than tap / table water. It saves SO MUCH plasic from the bottles and also so much heavy carrying from the grocery store!

it's really cool how it lets you customize sodas to taste. the boba store i used to work at used sodastream for its carbonated drinks. one of my favourite recipes was 2oz of blueberry/strawberry jam + 2.5 oz of plum vinegar + extra sweetener

Bulgaria has so much mineralized mountain spring water, they have taps everywhere for people to just fill up with free water. Some of these natural sources are naturally carbonated too. (You can buy it prebottled in stores, and it’s crazy cheap, 2 liters cost like a dollar.) Have the cheap Sodastream machine for a while, that CO2 canister seems to last a LONG time as I haven’t had to replace it yet, but we did need to replace the bottle (it has an expiration date!)

I think you missed one of the most important things for the question if a soda stream is the right thing for you: What quality is your flat water...Soda stream is so big in Germany, because we have a great water infrastracture, and you do not find water here that taste like cholrine...If you can not drink the water from your faucet, or it tastes aweful, a Sodastream is just usefull in combination with a filter...this is where the money starts to add up ;) Still the Sodastream was one of the best things I have bought, just drinking water from it right now ;)

We got our soda stream to cut out our soda consumption. My wife is diabetic, and was addicted to diet soda. With how bad aspartame is for you, that is also no good. The soda stream has worked wonderfully for us. We make our own flavors, so we can avoid the junk, and it has saved us money. So for us, it works. We got the one with the glass bottles, so we avoid plastics as well.

My uncle had a sodastream when I was a kid (33) and I remember wanting one so bad. He used to have the flavors mailed to him and I remember that being a reason my parents didn’t want to do it. I also remember the machine seeming really expensive, but that might have just been my child minds perspective. Happy to see it make a mainstream entry!

I'm a home brewer, and strongly agree with the point of using a big CO2 cartridge. I keep one of my kegerator taps dedicated for sparkling water. If anyone is looking for an alternate SodaStream option, you could get by with a corny keg, a regulator, CO2 tank, and a picnic tap. The total cost wouldn't be much more than a SodaStream, but you can get the refillable CO2 tank and corny keg used at most homebrew shops. Be careful though, you might accidentally acquire a fermenter...

Hey! In Germany, you can basically bring your empty Co2 canister to any supermarket and they'll exchange it for about 6€. With water, if sparkling or still, being a standard drink in Europe (which it should be everywhere bc ✨️sugarwater✨️), this saves lots of money and plastic bottles. Even if you buy glass bottled sparkling water, that is so inconvenient to carry and still more expensive. You drink water? You have good quality tap water? Get a soda stream.

I think the Pepsi buyout can be a good thing, because soda streams were originally marketed to replace soda, not just seltzer, and they have syrups that can be added to the bottles to make the soda. This way, people who like their Pepsi can have a name brand and eco friendly option for their favorite beverage.

My husband used to buy 6 liters of flavored sparkling water a week, 4 years ago we got him a soda stream and he uses it exclusively for his sparking water addiction. It’s definitely saved us money and saved a couple of bottles.

I watched a KZfaq video a whole ago with the adapter you’re talking about!! There’s also a huge section of people who will actually DIY it: by buying dry ice, screwing off the cap and gently putting the dry ice 🧊 in the original soda stream co2 container!!

Man, you are gonna get comments about the instant pot. Not a fad. As a disabled person, it changed my cooking game 100% and it also helped us cut down on eating out. Plus, one pot clean up means less dishes and water. But this video isn’t about the IP. We recently bought a manual (no electricity required) soda stream starter kit (with a 50% off coupon) for $50 because we found out a member of our household has a high intolerance to HFCS. This was a much cheaper option that buying store bought “fancy” sodas made with sugar like Jones. So the fact that it saves money and cuts down on single use plastic or aluminum is a big plus, the “health benefits” are the main reason we finally took the plunge and bought ours; so no, I don’t care that it was bought out by Pepsi. It seems like everything I look at ends up being owned by big corps like P&G or Pepsi or Amazon; and sadly while buying “local” or from small businesses is nice and ideal, it’s not accessible for a lot of us and the goal of most businesses is to one day no longer be small, right?

One other big factor is the quality of your tap water. Where I live it is not a problem, but sadly there are many areas where drinking straight from the tap isn't the healthiest option...

In Germany you can just return the gas bottle to your grocery store and get a new one. It's super convenient and cheap. Only thing I'm missing is Coke zero sirup (so the non-sugar version).

I bought a sodastream, not for sparkling water, but for soda. I’ve estimated that I can save up to $50 a year including the syrups and carbon dioxide canisters while reducing waste from my house and reducing emissions from shipping all of that water since I have drinkable tap water.

Living in europe we used to regularly buy unflavoured sparkling water in plastic bottle. I'd say a third of our meals we would drink it. But now that we have a sodastream machine, we litterally drink it for every meal. But I do still think it saved us money in the long run

In Argentina we are old school: we buy our soda siphon from the local supplier or brewer... they do the refill, and you can drink a good soda that does not pollute the environment with plastic bottles. Cheap and good.

Omg, I've bought a SodaStream a few weeks ago, after getting obsessed with ginger ale soda, but finding it to sweet for my palate and kind of expensive...I love it, the canister I have is still going strong and I make sparkling water with a dash of lemon to refresh almost everyday since ! I even made a ginger syrup myself to replicate the drink I liked :3

Sodastream isn't just a recent craze in countries outside the US. My step-Grandad had an old sodastream that still used the pretty glass twisty pattern bottles and I have fond memories of him letting us each have ginger ale, when we visited our grandparents. Parents also have a sodastream to give their kids plain bubbly water to get them to drink more water.

My family used to go through a slab of 24 cans of Pepsi in about 2 weeks, since switching to sodastream I've definitely saved money but it also feels much better throwing away 1 plastic bottle of concentrate instead of 24 cans (1 bottle = 8-9 litres), and the syrup is Pepsi syrup so it tastes exactly the same. And the refill program for the gas canisters is circular too so very little waste is produced.

I have been using Soda Stream for well over a decade. The flavor choices are quite good and I can contro; the anount of bubbles are in each bottle. I made the switch for covenience and quality of flavors and have never looked back since.

Yes them selling out to PepsiCO does devalue what they claimed their goals & priorities were. If I want to make my own spicy water I’ll buy a different brand for this reason alone - even if it’s more expensive. The hypocrisy rubs the wrong way. Imagine if some vegetarian/vegan brand of food that is owned by self-proclaimed “activists” sold their business to Cargill or Tyson.

Good idea with the big canister! I like my SS because it reduces the need to lug home a bunch of cans (especially since I’m usually walking or biking). Same goes for laundry strips. So much lighter!

We've had a soda stream for our family for quite a few years and use it pretty regularly. It has saved us quite a bit of money over those years. Our only complaint is that the reusable bottles don't hold the carbonation into the solution well enough after a few hours.

I’d love it if there was a place where you could specifically find alternatives to hyped, admittedly good but insanely pricey products that are just as good or even just almost as good but more affordable for the everyday person 👀

What makes more sense for PepsiCo? Procuring, purifying, carbonating, flavoring and packaging water, or selling you a little bottle of syrup? They're in it for the money but imo that's the way to change these big companies. Show them that less waste is more profitable.

If sodastream becomes more trendy, do you think it’s possible for Pepsi to brand it like Keurig? They can make machines that are only accept their CO2 and then sell it for like 50 dollars a machine like the K-Cup machines 😂 Or they can make s-cups

Nice one! Sadly I think it's more like when existing companies bring out a "carbon neutral " or eco product, but keep the rest of their business the same. They aren't changing their values, just capturing a new market segment 🙄

I had a really old glass bottle soda stream growing up and have a new modern one now. I don't use it much for soda water but use it to make tonic, lemonade etc.. main reasons I got one was so I don't have to lugg bottles from the supermarket, reduce packaging and save fridge space. Because the syrups last for ages I can basically have all my favorite drinks on hand and only need to keep one sodastream bottle of water in the fridge.

I just got one of these for Christmas, I can't wait to start using it. Cherry Bubbly has become a favorite beverage of mine. Helps cut back on the Dr. Pepper consumption.

We have had our Sodastream machine (the cheapest of the bunch) from over 10 years ago, the outer shell was still made of white plastic at the time. And aside the many bottles of CO2 that were used, we almost never buy a bottle of soda anymore. Our tap water is filtered and we have even been making our own syrups ("Fix the Pumps" by Darcy S. O'Neil is an amazing source btw) for a few years now.

I use my SodaStream for many years now and it's really great. We got really nice tap water so my partner and I drink mostly that but carbonated. I live in Germany and a few years back we used to have a deal where you can hand in your empty CO2 canister and get a full one for 1€ (which back then was roughly $1.20 USD). It has gotten a lot more expensive now but is still considerably cheaper than buying bottled water. Overall it saved us a lot of money and we don't have to carry heavy crates of drinks.

I inherited a sodastream from a friend. Thing is, I live in Paris where we get fizzy water from some public fountains, including one 200m from my house... the machine is understandably gathering dust at the back of a cupboard

I love my soda stream. As someone who walks to the grocery store, I pretty rarely drank sparkling water before I had it, but I drink so much now. And I get tonic syrup to make gin&tonics (and can make way less sweet than buying normal tonic water). I occasionally consider getting the giant CO2 canister but I generally only have to get a CO2 refill every 8 months, so it's kind of a low priority right now.

Instant pots are awesome and make beans really fast which is cool also try to find a used soda stream. We got ours for like 10-20 dollars second hand and it’s great.

Apparently soda stream is fairly popular with recovering alcoholics. Sparkling water (with or without syrup added) is a good replacement for the fizziness of beer, and having it on demand (more or less) makes it an easier choice to make

The thing that's stopped me from getting something like a Soda Stream is the need to go find the CO2 canisters for replacement. I'm very interested in the possibility of a large canister with an adapter! Now I'm off to go down that rabbit hole so I can achieve ultimate sparkling laziness ✨✨

Aren’t soda stream carriages better for the planet? (While not certain) I’m pretty sure used cartridges are sterilized, refilled and then sold again much like the milk bottle system. Contrast that with aluminum cans, which as you point out have to be melted down, using massive amounts of energy. Not to mention the high energy cost to make aluminum. Sure there is a transportation cost with the cartridges but you would have that with any of the other options discussed. As long as you are using a soda stream to its fullest extent I would think it’s a better choice then single use.

Years ago, I bought a SodaStream Penguin, one of their more expensive machines using glass bottles. Used it for a while and forgot about it. Sometime later, I was about to try it again, it made the fizzing sound, but no bubbles appeared in the water. I opened it up and found a broken plastic part. Emailed SodaStream to buy a replacement. They refused to sell it for "safety reasons". The option was to ship the machine from Norway to Sweden. As it was out of warranty, I had to pay to ship both ways and service costs. All in all, it would be more expensive than the machine itself. I ended up buying a machine from AGA, and it is still going strong. SodaStream will not get any more of my money.

I haven't used my SodaStream in almost a year. I was actually planning to go to the brewing store to refill my big tank. I plan to switch to directly connecting my tank to the SodaStream, but before I'd actually refill paintball tanks from it. I don't really recommend this though. It's needlessly expensive and a pain to do. Just connect it directly. I actually use my SodaStream for pretty much everything but water. (Plain sparkling water tastes weird to me) But I also don't necessarily recommend this, because it makes a huge mess which gets things sticky and even moldy. I wish there was a better solution for this on the market.

As a european, this hype has went completely over my head 😅 It seems strange to me that sparkling water✨ is apparently the big new thing. I can’t imagine drinking so much sparkling water that investing in a SodaStream is worth it. Regular water is perfect as it is 💦

Have a soda stream... I use it every day (husband can refill canisters at work for free!), Don't buy the drops...make your own flavours out of fresh strawberries or mint! Don't you be dissin' my Instant Pot (which I also use every day!) LOL.

I'm trying to work out how SodaStream can 'be the next air-fryer' when the air-fryer came years AFTER SodaStream... Also, I was drinking seltzer water for decades before SodaStream showed up, drinking it even before Perrier got to be a big thing. Um...it's not just aluminum drink cans that are lined with plastic; ALL cans (soup, beans, Vienna sausage, Manwich, tomato, etc) are lined with plastic, and they're ferric.

Switched from la croix to SodaStream. Definitely saving money. I calculated the cost per drink based on how many ounces it says of the canisters are good for, and compare that to you the number of cans of lacroix that I drink, generally the sodastream is cheaper by my second canister. And I'm also just glad that I'm not putting so much waste in the landfills

I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond when they first started to carry Sodastream, and we were warned that there was the potential for protest from them being manufactured in a controversial region in Israel.

Another way to carbonate drinks (without fancy equipment) is just getting some dry ice and dropping it in. Dry ice is solid CO2, and as it sublimates, a lot of the gas remains dissolved. This is how I learned to NOT carbonate milk. Along with tasting terrible, the protein in the milk means that it forms a stable foam that just keeps growing and overflowing from the cup onto your hands and into the sink making you wonder how on earth you are going to clean all this up.

Great video! My wife is German and we go through 2-3 of those cannisters a month. I am now researching large form cylinders why didn't I think of this?! Also Soda Stream has glass bottles which can further offset the damnable plastic.

Surely it is just PesiCo future-proofing their business. The fall of big soda isn’t as a result of just Sodastreams adverts, but a wider public awareness of the health risks associated with high sugar drinks globally. It is just good business to build an income stream following new consumer trends, particularly where those same trends are having a negative impact on your traditional business model. So many large businesses have failed historically because they haven’t adapted to changing consumer demands.

I've had one for like 10 years now, it's a lot cheaper than buying bottles, and even if it wasn't any cheaper, not having to haul bottles from the store is nice

Growing up in a sparklign water household meant for me and my family that we would drag around almost a whole crate of the biggest sparkling water bottles around at least twice a week, if not more. Soda stream obviously helps with that. Also we mostly use it just to carbonate our regular tap water. The syrups are a nice addition. Another potion, which may be mostly just a European thing, is that pretty much every store is part of that cylinder exchange program. A regular cylinder if bought outright will cost around 30 Euros, but if you exchange it the cost is around 5 - 8 Euros, depending on a few things such as brand and type of cylinder. Also one full cylinder lasts my (currently two people household) about 3 - 4 weeks. It’s pretty awesome.

as the daughter of a german who lived in hungary for a while, i was raised on sodawater. it was the only beverage aside from tea and milk. my dad would bring in bottles and bottles of mineral water every week, even though the tapwater in our country is one of the cleanest in the world. so he switched to sodastream pretty early on, and it made a lot of sense for him. it's one of those ecofriendly switches that just gives you so much satisfaction over how much plastic it saves, as well as money, as well as just being so much more convenient. eastern europeans really love their sodawater, i remember that ordering water in a restaurant would get you sparkling as a default. but i truly understand the attachment, because i feel the same way. sodawater supremacy bb

Bought one 2 years ago. Bought multiple bottles to make it easy to use. Everyone in my house uses the machine at least once a day. The replacement carts are cheap enough and last forever. 100% would recommend

We recently moved to the Netherlands and SodaStream/etc. is available everywhere here. All the home good stores sell them and extra accessories, and the beverage aisles at the grocery stores sell branded soda and juice syrup containers.

Hi I work at a Hydro aluminum plant. Where they use old aluminum to make new aluminum and they cannot use aluminum cans. Because the paint on them explodes in the molten aluminum!

So, here in Germany SodaStream got itself in a price war regarding the CO2 canisters. Big discounters like ALDI and drug stores also started selling unbranded CO2 canisters. Doing so, SodaStream lost its monopoly in this market. Yeah, they play the ink cartridge game. CO2 is dead cheap. To stop this, SodaStream started selling a new model that requires canisters with a proprietary cap instead of the traditional screw cap.

I live in Denmark and i feel like the bottle recycling system here is pretty good. Each bottle or can you buy has a code on it that identifies the type of material and how it should be recycled. The price includes something we call "pant", basically you pay a tiny bit of extra money for each bottle so that you return to the store, hand in your empty bottle into a machine that scans it and further recycles it for you, and gives you that money back so you use it further for groceries. So people are extremely incentivized to recycle their bottles and cans, because if you don't you literally lose money. You are even able to share these empty bottles with people in need. Some cities here have attachments to garbage cans called "share your pant", where you can leave your empty bottles for people that have a need for money, so they can put it in recycling for you and get a bit of money.

I've had a soda stream for years now. I exchange the canisters at Staples but I think you can do it at Walmart too. The price has risen to about $15 and it does 60 liters (quarts) so it comes out to 25 cents per liter. I flavor it with lemon juice or a Stevia based water enhancer. Too bad Pepsi bought Soda Stream.

Plastic lined cans is one thing but a whole lot of countries, like Canada for instance, sell milk in plastic bags.

I'd love some advice on using a Sodastream. We were gifted one for Christmas and haven't even opened it. I've decreased my soda consumption drastically over the last year. I drink more sparkling and flat water than any other time in my life. BUT my husband is unapologetically addicted to soda. I got him to switch to diet but he still goes through a 12pk in days. I'd love some advice to wean him off soda with one of these. What do y'all recommend?
