As my late mother said, if you want to become rich, don't sell to smart people, sell to stupid people - there are more of them.

I am 72. Back in the day my dad would state his hatred for the Rolling Stones, the Animals and Jimi Hendrix. "How can anyone listen to that garbage?" he would ask me, a trace of anger in his voice. Now I'm in his shoes. I will say that I understand one thing my father did not, I am not the target audience. So, my opinion of her music is voluntarily muted, and I have no anger.

Maybe it's just me but even though I hear about Swift every single day I couldn't name a single song she's ever made or recognise a single tune if it was played. And I don't live in a media cave. Their marketing game is strong.

I see Taylor like the Kardashian’s. I’ve never bought any of their products. But everyday I see their faces, and hear about their lives completely against my will.

My taste in music is apparently so off the mainstream that I couldn’t name a single Taylor Swift song. And I’m OK with that :)

My 2 daughters purchased "Swifty" tickets, and my granddaughter got sick, so they did not go to the concert in Cincinnati, OH! My oldest daughter put the tickets online for sale, and they got $4000.00 for 2 tickets within an hour! My youngest daughter bought a beautiful wedding dress with the money, thank you Lord!! THAT was money well spent! It was a beautiful wedding!

As a single dad for two teenage girls, it worries me that proper role models are so hard to find. It takes a village to raise a child.

So appreciate this realistic view. There is so much pressure out there to like her - even coming from my daughter. Why does she need so much defending. People don't like other artists and no one is defending them. It's weird. I'm like - I don't get it. I'm not seeing it. Her music does not speak to me in any way and I feel there are so many artists out there with so much more vocal talent and writing talent. Again, I just don't get it. I think she has a great marketing strategy though - she knows who to appeal to. No Barbra Streisand or yes, Karen Carpenter or Sara Bareilles. Pure raw talent without the need to distract from the lack of talent with extra showmanship.

In my opinion, her popularity is linked to her positive attitude, and the positive message from her songs even though all are somehow coming from negative outcomes, (solitude, break up, not understanding each other, anger, etc). As a guy in his sixties, I have a lot of respect for what Taylor has accomplished. I also have a lot of respect for Ray Croc turning McDonalds into the world's most popular restaurant. The two are very similar. Mass market appeal, but for the connoisseur, they fall short.

I've never heard someone summarize my thoughts about Taylor Swift so eloquently. Thank you, Dr Grande! For years I've been so tired of hearing about Ms Swift, and wondered why she is so bloody popular. I cannot name one of her songs, though I might recognize one if I listen carefully. Your analysis was spot on, especially regarding the future. At the risk of sounding like a bitter old man, I do get annoyed when an artist such as Taylor eclipses so many others with more to offer. I agree that Taylor's music needs to evolve and turn the creative corner, so to speak, if she is to be regarded seriously as an artist, not just a performer. As of now I think of her as a 1 trick pony act in a circus. From what I have heard, her songs do deliver the same lyrics, message, and musical compositions over and over. I guess her fans are rabid about their connection with her. If that's what they crave, then good for Taylor. She can count her money. I honestly cannot tolerate any of her songs and do not understand the Swift phenomenon.

And, ultimate hypocrisy on her fake “anti-toxic masculinity” mantra from a few years ago by dating Travis Kelce and completely turning a blind eye to his own glaring traits of this same toxic masculinity she apparently has decried (disrespecting his HC in the middle of the Super Bowl, when he knows all eyes are on him). I have spoken with Swifies, and I found it a little scary. The kind of worship of Taylor Swift- as not only a good pop singer and songwriter, but as a kind of singular genius. I don't deny her talent, even though I'm not a fan, but really any pop singer is really a product IMO. There is a huge team of producers, co-writers, session musicans, recording, mix and mastering engineers, not to mention the large team of marketeers and promoters that make her (or anyone else similarly popular) the success she is. I think of it like just focusing on the best player in a team sport, while forgetting the other team members, supporters and ptomiters that win games!

I found that it was extremely difficult to find appropriate music for my girls to listen to growing up and it seemed less provocative than some other artists, particularly the rap genre. I think that a lot of parents may have been in the same situation. She's nothing special, but there is so little competition. Also she relentlessly keeps putting out more music. Unfortunately, she's actually a terrible role model for the kids also 😢

Whether it is an awards show or (unfortunately) an NFL game, every time a camera pans to Taylor, she is dancing, posing, or otherwise acting and appearing silly and immature. No one is "on" all the time. I wonder sometimes if she is even human. I don't hate Taylor, however. But I do hate the Kansas City Cheats, so for that and what I had to sit through this football season, she can kick rocks.

David Mueller is adamant that she lied about him. And she doesn’t seem concerned about the fact that her tickets aren’t affordable to fans who don’t have wealthy parents. I can't tell you how much of a breath of fresh air your commentary on the "Taylor Swift craze" is, as I have a 15 year old daughter who is incapable of going 5 seconds without a Taylor Swift newsflash or an impromtu cover concert. She's about to come to Australia and the news media are going nuts reporting about her anticipated arrival. I just chalked it up to maybe there’s nobody out there that is amazing right now? Not trying to put her down, she is a good songwriter of catchy lyrics and tunes.

It was COVID that played a big role in this boost in Tayler Swift. During COVID the fans missed her and that created a build up. Like a wall holding water over time its gets bigger and when it breaks it spills out and we get the ''overwhelming'' support in her tours and music. It's not what we think it is. It was just an over flowing that seemed to show she became bigger. COVID created an inadvertent super star "bigger" then what she was before. If COVID was not around she would just continue to be a normal pop star with regular concert attendance and music sales. Tayler Swift to me isn't a deserving star to be as big as she seems to be. She hasn't done anything to innovate in music similar to beatle's or Micheal Jackson. She just another artist like all the other artists today. It's a lot of luck really.

Perhaps she is a 'product' that is successfully marketed by clever people who reap mega benefits. 24/7 promotion by mainstream media certainly helps to convince many folk that they have to love her - because everybody else does.

Carly Simon's You're So Vain comes to mind, back up vocals by Mic Jagger, really cool bass riff intro, no wasted words and tells a great story. All her songs were different and beautiful with crazy good instrumentals and back up vocals. That's where I come from, the 60's and 70's. Taylor Swift has a really cool name but she doesn't begin to compare to the artists from my era.

It's because she's so "safe." The theme music to shopping at Target, drinking Starbucks out of those cups everyone loves. Her music is the anthem of vanilla-ness, of the mainstream and social media capitalized on it and made it even more magnetic for those with no sense of identity, which is more and more of a thing with so many divergent directions people feel they can go in, also made evident by widespread access to the Internet. People don't know who they are anymore, so they school together in the most benign way, hoping to not stick out or offend in any way. She's the lucky inheritor of a lost culture.

Id be interested in a video on the singer Enya. She's so private that fans know very little about her. I think i read there's something called the 'Enya effect" where the less people knew about her, the more successful she became. Basically the opposite of Taylor Swift.

You didn't talk about her compassion by giving bonuses to all her crew members as well as her truckers, and donates money to local charities to every single community in which she has her concerts. She's not only talented, but she uses her money wisely, and shares it with her team, unlike other billionaires. It's not just about her music, but her character and using her celebrity for good.

I am a 47 years old woman. Not a Swiftie, but my young daughter is. I'm Not an anti-Swiftie. I enjoy her songs ok. But I believe she's right when she says there's a sexist and misogynistic conversation about her. When a man writes love songs, bad AND good no one bats an eye. There are no movements against them because they sometimes write about exes. She writes social commentary songs. She writes about her family. She's an LGBTQ ally. She writes about that. If she ever decides to have children, I bet she writes songs about children. Tell me, what Stevie Nicks song do you like that is of the super deep variety? Also, she can hit some difficult notes. I think most people who say these things are hearing that negative narrative that has been crafted against her by people who want to discredit her, believing it without due diligence, and running with it. Much of it is political at this point. She has "dangerously" come out in favor of women. Like I said before it's sexist, it is misogynist. I was taken aback when a friend recently said that she doesn't know anyone who likes her. Not my taste in music, probably wouldn't recognize any of her songs and not aware of any excessive press coverage. I have no reason to critique her, unfortunately there seems to be no lack of people that feel compelled to do so. Seems to me that she has done extremely well for herself, without showing her arse, so to speak.

I am fond of the song "Hotel California." There is an undeniable emotional depth to it that still resonates with me, even as my interest in its lyrics wanes. It would be fascinating if Dr. Grande could analyze pop songs in the same meticulous manner that he analyzed "Hotel California."

She is one dimensional, completely narcissistic, and musically constricted. Her soul is black,… but she appeals to the masses. She reflects the current social climate.
