One thing I've always loved about HeroQuest's board is the fact you can pick any two rooms on the board and link them using only the corridors. It's a little detail that often goes overlooked, but it makes every room you enter feel like there's a reason for it to be entered, even if all you do there is bash a goblin's brains in.

That's a fantastically good point. I overlooked that as well, but now I'm wiser!

I made a beautiful custom board out of plexiglass that I carved every square with a Dremel and I made the squares 1 inch and a quarter. Now it’s perfect.

one can combine rooms to make bigger rooms. seen plenty of home-brews where they do this. Even seen someone use half the board for a giant room. also I love your content. thank you sir

The outdoor board from Dragon strike gets the most use at my Hero Quest table

Well the old 1989 version wasn’t so good. Dragon strike was better. TRS made a good game. If ur a preteen/elementary student/high schooler./disabled student. Then it’s too hard. But the new heroQuest board game system is way better. It’s easier to learn. Check it out. The Multiplayer expansions Kellers keep&Return of the witch lord. Are just hard. But stay away from the heroQuest solo expansion packs. They’re unfair&they cheat.

One of the better boards I use for HeroQuest are the modular tiles from Dungeons & Dragons The Fantasy Adventure Board Game. The tile sizes are the same size as HeroQuest so they can be layed down on top of the board to add more variety, bigger rooms and some outdoor locations.
@ThatAnimeSnob

At this point there are lots of modular room or exterior tiles you can place on the board so the room placement won't be visibly predictable to the heroes. Just like you added a second board next to the first, you can add the battle room, the refuge room, the rotating room, the dragon temple room, and so on in areas that don't fit the rooms and change completely they overall look.

A non modular game that I had around the time of Hero Quest was Dark World. It was a fantastic board presence with 3d cardboard walls and a plastic temple set piece. The game play was pretty simple and the lack of board variation hurt it but it had working secret doors and modular weapons for the hero pieces. Between that and the dragonstrike boards, it seems like there is a real back and forth when balancing versatility and flavor of the dungeon crawl type games. Having the board space set an upper limit to the play space is probably why it endures better than Advanced Hero Quest. The color and personality of the rooms on the HQ board is well worth handwaving the style contrast.

I have and love dark world despite its simplicity. I hope I can get some videos about it in soon, it's really worth covering the expansions!

I’m just getting into Dungons and Lasers terrain with the main purpose of using it for Heroquest. The biggest downside is that all their tiles are either 2x2 or 2x4, making it difficult to create single tile corridors without modifications. Alas I am determined to make it work.

Throw down floor tile tiles, and those smaller rooms can be larger rooms

The dragonquest board seems like it would benefit from hallway tiles to bypass rooms and vary the layout between quests. Not played it before, nor dived in to see it's contents. But it seems like it would be a cool board if it was scaled up a bit and given some room and hallway tiles to spice up the possibilities.

The D&D board game boards are worthy of a mention, as is the wilderness side of the Dragon Strike, which is definitely the most useful of the lot - especially as Heroquest doesn't have much in the way of Wilderness tiles. The city board could be handy for the odd urban adventure, but as you noted in your video, both suffer from credibility issues with a one size fits all approach. Sure you could cordon areas with block tiles, but that's a lot of effort for marginal gain. A couple of other downsides: 1 space wide corridors on the DS cavern can lead to some dull fights as only one hero and one monster get to enjoy any action. The small rooms on the maps aren't much better. The caverns definitely gain something if you add a few secret doors to them though. Since Hasbro owns the rights to all of them, I'd love them to reuse the figures and boards in some way. There's a potential video in the "other IP Hasbro could reprint that could be used for Heroquest..."

I recreated the Hero Quest game for Foundry VTT and when using the Boards digitally they work really well, I have Double Boards, Quad Boards, a Board with Double Wide Hallways, etc. An of course when playing online you do have the ability to hide the rest of the board using the dynamic lighting.
@AshQuest

The dynamic lighting is a must have option for some dungeons, and always really cool to experience while playing.

Nice breakdown! I really like the DS map designs but could already tell how difficult they would be to use. Cool ideas they tried though. Appreciate the deep dives into HQ minutiae. I can only hope that you will deep dive into Quest books for us Newbie Zargons. Would be great to hear your thoughts on difficulty level of maps, cool features of certain quests and how you would play them. Also what you like or dislike from each expansion. ABNB did none for Rise and that's a really great listen. Would love to see do something like that!

Thank you, great vid, point 4 the boot tile, [and all details like bones and boot are small and add to board without being large and trying to force itself on the whole space [like DS]. I love the dragon quest board, I like the dragon strike boards, but hq still wins. Dark World board, makes a great first quest to play, board is fun, and you can get some starter gold by battling monsters and learning combat. they have nice giant treasure chests that open. makes a good dungeon treasure/boss treasure. you can also use just the top piece for a wicked throne. I know it's not the same, but another board that works and is fun is cutthroat. [sandy deserted island feel] if you want a manor and don't mind, the different games of clue add a variety of boards. if you are looking at traverse forest trails set up life, or one of its variations, [I do like the(potc) one. also are you lost in a crazy dream land, racing to get out. candyland. are you trapped inside with a mad artificer, building a machine designed to catch skaven. then mousetrap is your board. are you in a giant courtyard, fighting a small group in a skirmish, chess/checker board will work fine. the large scrabble or Othello board works too. a battle on a stratego board, yes please. one on one pit fighting tic- tac- toe dnd paper maps are fine, they can be copied and glued to foam/MDF/card plus BM, HS, even AoTP[thin card] there are more of course, I am but one man without enough time to play heroquest on every possible game board. my comment already is long, so thank you. I will say one more thing about it. HeroQuest -the game that keeps conquering other games.

HeroQuest will always reign supreme! Quick question: Any products available to lay on top of a HeroQuest board to add more rooms. I saw one of your previous video's featuring the spiral bound maps but I'm looking for individual rooms like the ones featured in The Frozen Horror, The Mage in the Mirror, etc. Any suggestions?

After a deep dive on Amazon, the closest I could come up with is Lokes Little Book series - you'd have to separate them from their ring bindings, but they'd match the scale of the 2021 board and would fit within it rather than outside! Printing your own is the only other thing I could think of!

In fact, I would recommend the D&D tiles. They match up grid wise perfectly, as they are 1” squares the same as the new HeroQuest board Edit: This is only true for the new AH version

I thought the Dragon Strike boards were the cat's ass when I first saw them, but they really don't have any replayability. This really impacts the value of the game and it's high sticker price. While HeroQuest also has some issues with replayability (especially with Dread Moon costing north of $70 Canadian), you get a variety of pieces you can use in your own quests. You can use the Dragon Strike boards in your own quest alter, but they're too static and limiting.

That version wasn’t so good. Ppl were complaining bout how the furniture was so bad. The figures were thin plastic. The open&closed doors were just cardboard cutouts with plastic stands. So 30+ yrs later. Hasbro bought Avalon Hill lock stock and barrel. They went through it. Totally redesigned the game system. Oops forgot in The 1989 system quests were hard. Ppl stopped playing. So they made the quests a lot easier. Multiplayer quest expansions were challenging. Which they made it hard,instead of challenging. But the solo was expansion packs are just plain unfair&cheat. Secondly, chaos spells are Dread spells, many other changes were made. Ppl say it’s way better. I have it here. Bought off Amazon. I looked through the quests. It’s way easier. But that’s what I remember.

The video is about the board, which has undergone 0 changes between the classic and contemporary edition of the game, but in comparing the quests between the classic and contemporary you'll find there are virtually zero changes - the new game is essentially as close to a re-release of the game as possible with no changes other than those referencing current IP innuse by Games Workshop (and of course, the Citadel sculpts). People are still getting crushed in the Trial! Plenty more HQ content on the channel if you're interested!

Great breakdowns 🤌 While HQ is still a class of it's own, Dragon Quest is my favourite for homebrew stuff. The rooms feel so organic and adaptable. Even if your players can see the whole map it gives very little hint of what they're still 1 room away from. 5/5 Brodesodes

Heroquest has a broken, Armory and spell system and with the introduction of so many new classes with lack of options also a broken Class system. Some things could be touched with more expansions but the whole combat system might be too unflexible for huge unbalanced additions. It was always an mess. Nice for kids and nostalgie
