“Old technology is asshole” 🤣 I love it, it described it perfectly.

I am applying to jobs in Japan and saw new companies are allowing flexi timing or complete remote timing. Like Pay Pay. Also more open to hiring and relocating foreign workers. I wanted to move to Japan but thought I can't handle the work culture of japan so I am glad new companies are changing the status quo. It's good for Japanese people and anyone who wants to work there.

Do you have to be proficient in Japanese for these jobs that you found?

It depends on the company. Some are old traditional companies that are a nightmare to work for, as they will breach labor laws and incorporate bullying. Some are racist and have trust issues and don’t want foreigners working there. Others are much better for foreigners to work for and you may even work in a team of foreign employees. The problem with Japanese companies is if they feel that your lack of ability will drag the team down, then they won’t want you. In many cases, Japanese customers are also racist, unreasonable, and extremely hard to deal with. In many cases they don’t want to speak to a foreigner and so the company will not put you in front of them. You would just lose your temper putting up with their nonsense, which is not a good look.

@@CamiloMacaya There were different requirements for it. Most required atleast basic Japanese proficiency. Some required business level and only few jobs without Japanese. Usually only startups.

I am working as an IT engineer here in Japan. I think there is one more reason why the IT is bad. It's the management style. The old-style management system treats IT engineers like contract workers: they should do as they're told, and they couldn't and shouldn't reject any request. Adding new features every month and no one maintains the previous ones. Sometimes, even the startup companies' upper managements have this style.

So one thing I had heard about traditional japanese companies is that after the first couple of years, they start giving the employees massive increases in pay, and every year they increase it. How true is that?

Increasing after the first couple of years is true. But final salary is not that high as the US tech companies. Up to 10 million yen for annual salary.

I worked in Japanese IT back in the late 2000s. Always had a bit of a laugh how some Japanese companies would rely on "soon-to-be-unsupported" versions of software because of the belief of their stability or speed on faster hardware - and completely ignore possible software vulnerabilities and future support issues. I think Windows XP had way too long a life in Japan. Actually so did fax machines. Also the religious devotion to Ruby - because it was designed by a Japanese - prevented exploration of other languages and frameworks. Although I always admired how Japanese people would support their own "Made in Japan" products.
