I will always take the North America cartridge design over the rest of world's version of the Super Nintendo Cartridge design.. Reading the label seems like a better idea than just pulling cartridges out of it's perfectly stacked place when you can easily read the labels on what you want to play and remove perfectly without making a mess..

The international SNES box has 7 different colors to it, while the NTSC box has only 3. The NTSC is clearly the bland looking one of the two...I remember as a kid when I was on a look for a second controller and there was only the NTSC version on sale (because all of the PAL version had been bought out), and I was so disappointed that I didn't buy one at all.

The 4 color logo hardly counts, and neither do the controller buttons. The bulk of the unit is beige and gray. Looks like a bit of office kit (printer, fax machine, etc.), not a high tech entertainement system.

I feel like the logo is the cherry on top of the cake. Both units are greyish, the NTSC and the SNES though. So was the PS1. PS1 actually reminds me alot of the PAL SNES. it too has a tiny colorful logo on it...

I think that is the only redeeming feature, the rest of the console is not as aesthetically pleasing

I agree... growing up in Canada and owning the SNES, I didn't know there was a different design for the other regions, and as such always assumed everyone got the same purple and grey systems that we did. I also agree that the Japanese/PAL system did look a bit odd to me, and perhaps uglier to my eyes, but then again that's probably due to us North Americans growing up with the design we did.

Thats odd because in the UK we have brightly coloured sweets called Smarties (similar to M&M or Skittles in appearance) and they are similar to our SNES buttons. Perhaps this was Nintendo's intent all along, to make their buttons match the respective region's Smarties. From a google search the US Smarties look like our Love Hearts or Parma Violets. I'd never thought about it but they do look like the concave US SNES buttons.

origionalwinja NTSC runs at a higher refresh rate and PAL has a higher resolution and better colour. Neither are really superior. We have it much better now that we have abolished both those old standards.

Not my family and I didn't do anything like that in the United States.. My mother couldn't stand when things wasn't organized and clean.. If it couldn't be fixed she sure wasn't going to keep it like we were some hoarders.. She got rid of it cause it's no longer no use to us.. Its actually a bit odd but I've never noticed until now that the successful consoles tend to be flatter than the competition. NES is flatter than Master System (lets forget the Turbografx) SNES and Mega Drive are more similar in flatness so they were a lot closer in success, with the SNES just beating it as a drink holder. Playstation was super flat, like NES flat, and the Saturn and N64 would't hold a drink very well. From then on everything became flat but a few have added bonus features like overheating such as the 360 or the PS4 which could easily serve as a grill.

When games consoles got "serious" they got flat. Sleek lines blend better with hifi equipment, and look less toyish overall.

Does it taste nice then? Never tried Switch.

In the eighties, I didn't care about Nintendo or Sega, their 8-bit consoles never even registered with me, being an owner of various home computer systems at the time, Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amiga, etc. It was only in the 90s that I got into consoles, briefly with Sega Megadrive and then soon replaced by the superior SNES and N64, which I loved. However, still to this day, my all-time favourite video game music remains the loading music for Ocean games on the C64.

Sega was doing fine in Europe with their arcade machines and (often terrible) arcade conversions, there was no need to any blue mascotte over here. That's another difference between American and European retrogamers: most of the American ones seem to know arcade games only through heir console conversions, as if they never left home to go and play on a real arcade machine.

Also, American Sega fans are usually all about "Genesis" and Sonic, while retro Sega in Europe is synonym with Arcade (Out Run After Burner, Golden Axe, Daytona, etc..)

Many of my friends in the UK at the time (late 80s to mid 90s) had a NES rather than anything else, basically because either they had parents with money (very expensive games, either for NES or SNES, even when compared to SEGA equivalents, much less home computers of the time) or parents who saw Nintendo to mean computer/video games. It's true to say, growing up, that we referred to computer games rather than video games, mainly because there really was a massive demand for Amiga, Atari ST and Commodore 64, as well as Spectrum and Amstrad, in the UK. However, many people used the term Nintendo to mean video games and it was well en-grained in the public conscious. I don't recall the SNES being anywhere near as popular, basically due to the exorbitant cost of games: typically a new game for both SNES and Megadrive would be 44.99 on the SEGA as opposed to around 59.99 on the SNES. I am German and born in 1981. I did not have a NES, and I didn't know anybody who had one. But some friends had a C64, Amiga or Atari ST. My first gaming system was the original GameBoy - and I was not the only one around me with this. Probably the Nintendo Magazine, that I got because of the GameBoy, showed me the NES, and I remember that I wanted one (but didn't get it...) Later the SNES became more famous here and I know several people who had one. But I think it was the first PlayStation that made Home Gaming Consoles a real big things for the masses - probably at the same time the smaller homecomputers died out and Windows-PC became the only relevant Computers. So at least in Germany it was the GameBoy, that started the success of Nintendo, and not the NES.

So no idea how many would have actually been purchased in its native country. The silly thing about buying an NES in the 80s was that it was a waste of money as the games were so expensive. However I am aware that Blockbuster managed to get away with creating a file sharing network for the product, by allowing game rentals.

Commodore 64 was popular in America, but just for a brief period of time; you abandoned it early. By the time the Amiga 500 came out (which was not popular at all in America, despite being one of, if not *the* best 16 bit system of the time), the C64 dropped in price dramatically, so by the end of the 80s not only games were cheaper, but the computer itself costed equal or even less than a console, that's why Europe kept the C64 alive well into the early 90s.

I'd hardly call removing some tabs that can't be seen unless you're holding the dust cover open "butchering", but I can definitely understand the sentiment of not wanting to deface your SNES in any way. Personally I think expanding functionality isn't something that's detrimental to hardware so I'm fine with losing the tabs, but using an adapter is a good middle ground I suppose.

In the US Model all you had to do was remove two small plastic tabs out of the slot to play the import carts.

What a twit.... the NES was not even a pimple on the arse of the gaming world outside of Japan and the US (yes - there IS a world outside the US and Japan and it is much bigger than the two combined) - the NES was an unmitigated failure in Europe where 16 bit computer systems (complete with rampant piracy) propelled the games industry in these areas right into the mid 90s where the PC took over. The NES was of great benefit in the aftermath of the US games crash (which ONLY happened in the US), but it meant next to nothing everywhere else - even the Sega Master System run circles around the NES in Europe, which is saying something....

Then, by the mid 90s when these systems were dying out, they shifted to PC gaming - the console market in this area was never large. Again, your argument is false - the NES did NOTHING to "save" the games market in most of the world for two simple reasons - 1. there WAS no market crash in the gaming sector outside of the US, and 2. even if there was, console gaming (including and ESPECIALLY the NES) was insignificant in these areas - computer gaming was king in these areas, console gaming was nothing. Maybe you should do a little research first then come back?

After this the console market IN AMERICA (NOT the world) was thought to be dead and buried until Nintendo took a chance and successfully reinvigorated the CONSOLE market (NOT the games market) in THE US (not the rest of the world). You keep referring to the "rest of the world" as doing the same thing as the US - you are very wrong (like usual it seems). The MAJORITY of the planet was gaming via home computers - United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, USSR, India, Poland, Netherlands etc etc etc. VERY few countries had console gaming as the market share, namely Japan and the US. I don't know if this is what christopher meant, but the american snes is very easy to mod to play super famicom games. the only region lockout the SFC/SNES had was cartridge shape, and by removing two plastic tabs in the SNES you could fit SFC games into it.

That's not what he said. He said it's "EASILY made to play super famicom games". Unlike the PAL version (which as Christopher alludes, runs at a different rate), the North American SNES is an NTSC console like the Super Famicom. The motherboards are actually identical. The only thing keeping one from playing a Japanese game on an American system are two little plastic tabs that can easily be removed, there isn't any sort of electronic region lock.

Yes, yes it is. I put in many a Japanese Super Famicom game into my imported US SNES, that is after removing two small plastic protrusions with pliers. Those protrusions were put in to prevent the Japanese carts from being put in. You can see two notches on the back side of the US cartridges that aren't there on the European and Japanese cartridges. The two NTSC consoles were technologically the same. To make imported NTSC (J and US) games run on the European system, though, you were faced with a different problem, since in Europe we used the PAL standard for television, running at a slightly higher resolution and a bit better color reproduction, but on 50 Hz frequency (due to electricity coming at 50 Hz) compared to the 60 Hz of NTSC systems. Anyway, there was a way to make the NTSC games run on a PAL system by buying a special adapter that slotted into the cartridge slot and that had two connectors for cartridges in it. Why two, you ask? Easy, in the front one you plugged in the imported game and in the back one a PAL cartridge. The adapter was wired to read the region code from the PAL cartridge but play the NTSC cartridge, fooling the PAL system into thinking it was using a PAL cartridge the whole time. There was another problem however, if you wanted the games to run well you needed a TV with a SCART socket and needed a video cable with a SCART plug, at least for best compatibility. If the TV was also able to process a 60 Hz video signal you were golden, at least when it comes to the graphics being displayed somewhat correctly. There were, however, also a few problems with this method. One problem was that the PAL system was still running at only 50 Hz, that meant that the games were some 16.6% slower than on the NTSC consoles. Now, for some games that might actually be good, as you had 16.6% more time to react to changes on screen. The problem with this was that some games didn't really like being run at lower speeds if not adapted properly. The smallest problem was things like the end sequence of FF III (FF VI) not displaying the graphics but only playing the music after you defeated the final boss. The larger ones was that some games wouldn't run at all. Another problem, at least with official PAL releases, was the matter that some games weren't adjusted for the slower refresh rate of PAL TVs, so some games ran slower. Some games, on the other hand, were adapted to the slower refresh to run at the same speed as the NTSC version. Your only good source for information back then was it being mentioned in the text of the review magazines. If it wasn't you never could be sure if you were playing a slow version or an adapted speed version. Ah, so many memories, but suddenly I also start to feel old.

Schnittertm1, "The larger ones was that some games wouldn't run at all" funny fact, this was not because of size itself but because of the co-cpu's on the cart. so if you got a NTSC game that got those extra wide connectors you need a PAL game with em too or the system will not start or act weirdly. and some games is just impossible to run stock, like Super Mario RPG where you need to mod both game and console to make it work on an PAL machine.
