Why is the SWR so high on my IC 705 with my Signal Stick Antenna??

In this video I look into trying to get the SWR better by installing a tiger tail to my IC705.
Don't get me wrong the signal stick is totally usable but I thought the SWR would have been better.
SWR isn't everything but I don't want it so high that it hurts my radios, so I want to do some receive testing with these antennas and a couple others I have later.

Ht couples with the users body. Also, read the note on the website. NOTE FOR IC-705 OWNERS: The Signal Stick is not designed to be used on a radio such as the Icom IC-705 and the SWR will likely not be as low as you’d hope; the quarter wave design has no artificial impedance match and works purely on resonance, which is why it works so well - but the impedance and thus SWR is influenced a lot by the ground plane / counterpoise, and the antenna system on a base radio looks nothing like that of an HT plus your arm, etc. Some users have reported simply not being happy with the performance (though we’ll point out that SWR is only half of what determined antenna performance) and others have reported good luck by adding a counterpoise to the antenna (such as attaching the shield to station ground, adding a 19″ wire to the shield, etc). We have recently obtained a 705 for testing and have been experimenting with different configurations; so far it seems to perform quite well, but the SWR is about 3:1 which we understand will concern many of our customers. As we learn more we’ll update with recommendations.

I just checked my 2 antennas, I have 1 for baofeng and another for yaesu, both gave 2 swr, the baofeng gave 1.1 in 148. I always carry a counterposie to improve reception, I cut it from a rigid wire to keep it horizontal. it improves a lot

Thanks, Chuck. I've had good luck with the Signal Stick on my 705 using a 19 inch counterpoise. I often use that setup for Winlink.

You should have got the big badass Abree antenna.😊 Good to see your testing Chuck.👍

It's fun to experiment, but I guess that's why you don't see a tail on every HT. Maybe it depends on if you have dry skin and don't conduct well.

Somehow I cannot visualize what you are doing with the antenna, but the graph looks great.

It was pretty much proven 2 years ago that you need a counterpoise on the 705 to operate a 2 meter whip of any kind. On a handheld your body provides the counterpoise through capacitive coupling.

That is not true.I run a Diamond SRH770S handheld antenna and my swr is all under 1:5-1 across all of 2m and 70cm.And I have NEVER had a counterpoise on it.

Nice video Chuck. I always figured the Signal Stick is bad on the 705 since an HT would be using you as the counterpoise, so having any kind of radial on the ground plug would make it usable. How long was your tail?

it was 18-20" i just bent it over for each part of the band

As others have pointed out, measuring handheld antennas can be problematic, because your body acts as a counterpoise. You also need to see what effect your changes make on the 70cm band, because these multi-band antennas are always a compromise. Have you checked into getting a NanoVNA for these types of tests? Inexpensive and very informative.🙂

I found all of my handhelds give a better vswr on the original antenna on VHF but the accessory antenna is better on UHF.

Hi Chuck, I noticed that the step size was 10kHz when checking the SWR. Can that be changed to 100kHz when scanning the 2M band? That would allow a full Mhz to be scanned using 11 bars. WJ3U

It would interesting to compare the 705 SWR to a nanovna or RigExpert

No, Duh. Your 705 has no ground plane. Your antenna requires a ground plane or radials.
