Why is this Chinese electric car the world's best selling car

At the beginning of 2021, Tesla Model 3 lost its leadership among the best-selling electric vehicles in the world. In this ranking, it had to give way to the small Chinese hatchback Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV, which in just a few months managed to gather a whole army of loyal fans in its homeland.
Now how did that happen? We will tell in this review!
Sales began in July 2020 and withing the first twenty days the Mini EV manufacturer received 15,000 orders. For six months, this number increased eightfold and amounted to 120,000 cars. And according to the results during the first two months of 2021, the Chinese baby became the best-selling electric car in the world, leaving behind the permanent leader Tesla Model 3.
Such impressive sales dynamics were made possible by the unprecedentedly low price of this electric car: just over $4,200 in the basic version and about $5.5 thousand in the improved configuration. For comparison, the price of the Tesla Model 3 in the domestic car market in China is about $42,000, which is 10 times more expensive than the Mini EV.

I'm from Brasil and I dream with this car! As some people already said, the Western countries are taking the wrong approach to Electric Vehicles, treating them as a niche thing, instead of thinking about the ordinary people, workers etc. It's very cynical of the car manufacturers to simply say that EV are still expensive because of market, or structure or whaterever... China is there proving it can be done!

Yes, but while a worker at VW costs the company 4000$/month, in China he costs 500$/month. Hence EU car makers either produce a HUGE amount of cheap cars (and then have to deal with warranty and so on and so for) OR build "added value products" where they have a decent gain. You really can't compare the 2 realities.

@@hlq2action310 Yeah, more or less the whole EU is that way, even tho recently they're all suffering of the same "make it bigger" mania. My parents in the '70s were going on vacation with me baby and all the needed stuff into something that nowadays is like a Toyota Yaris. Now it seems that if you don't have a damn 4.5m SUV you can't live if you've a toddler, which is kind of ridiculous. Plus the current VW Polo is bigger than a Golf Mark2, which back then was an upper segment, and the current VW Golf is big like a full sedan from 30 years ago...

tbh as a european given I can get a 5k subsidy, I'd buy that. I already have a diesel van, but I'm gonna get a kid, and for daily driving to school it seems perfect, and it can also be a good grocery getter with the rear seats taken out. I don't have highways near me anyway, so I'd be doing 80 kph max, the 4 seats are good enough for most cases, the small car is good for parking wherever (compared to my 6m van.) if it's marketed as a comfort 4 seat alternative to a road legal atv, I think it would be really popular in europe too.

I don't think so. This pretty much almost a direct copy of Japanese kei car designs which they have been producing for 50 years, which themselves been "inspired" from many European "mini" cars around the same time. Americans have rejected small cheap cars and prefer to finance 30k cars which are considered "cheap" in America. I'd absolutely love these or other cheap cars, but companies don't want to build them. Also regulators that don't have any exemptions or incentives to adopt small cars. This is from somebody who owns multiple kei cars.

The Chinese have had cheap micro cars for years but, here in the UK, we have had none. I believe this great little car would sell like hot cakes in the UK too providing the price is not artificilly inflated. Like the Chinese, many UK citizens would find them great for doing most short journeys like shopping, dropping the kids off at school and to replace having to use public transport because of the unaffordablity of all the very expensive EV cars only available.
