Since March of 2020, the City of Toronto has permanently housed more than 2,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. But there still isn’t enough space to house every person seeking refuge.
That’s where Toronto resident Khaleel Seivwright tried to step in. He began building makeshift shelters across Toronto.
But as often is the case, no good deed goes unpunished.
This is the story of how a Toronto man's ingenious project to help those struggling ended with him being sued by the city of Toronto.

Yet Toronto seems to have 0 problems with letting the homeless slum encampments that have popped up around the city stay up.

And there is no way that those encampments and tent cities are less of a fire risk than these tiny shelters.

-Notice how the city uses the most expensive way to remove the shelters, more money that could be spent on housing. -how long did it take for the city to remove tent city from Queens Park? Move pretty quick against this gentleman -never ever have I seen a city homeless housing program that has actually been effective in Toronto. smh

Thank you for promoting this story. Typical that a lone person can make more of a difference than the high paid government bureaucrats.

reminds me of when the city said it would cost 500k to build a stair case in a park. one guy ended up doing it for 500$ and they ripped it up a week later claiming it was unsafe.

So this young man wanted to make a difference raised funds and got things done. The real problem is his solution only cost 1000 dollars. The professional activists and government who make a great living off the homeless cant allow their gravy train being derailed. The house always wins.

This would be a solution and governments don't solve anything. They prefer to hire more, spend more and complicate the issue to ensure job security. Can anyone tell me a problem the government actually solved?

I believe there are legitimate reasons why the city should seek to halt the proliferation of makeshift shelters. I find the fire hazard concern completely legitimate, along with property damage, public safety, and so on. However, who does that failure belong to? It doesn't belong to Mr. Seivwright. It belongs to city leadership. Letting the homeless freeze to death is _not_ an acceptable solution. The makeshift shelters should be removed and prevented from being deployed in the future. City leadership should provide viable, designated alternatives *immediately.* All charges/suits against Mr. Seivwright should be dropped and he should be commended for his desperate attempt to provide a stop-gap to cover the city's abject failure. I would think this would be satisfactory to all parties.

For a lot of homeless people the biggest obstacle to finding housing is the WILL to do it and then overcoming the laziness to meet their caseworker and sign required documents. It's actually harder to get homeless people into housing than it is to find it for them. What Khaleel is doing is kind and from the heart. But in the long term it perpetuates the idea that it's comfortable to live in the streets, deterring more legit options like subsidized or public housing. And the whole "Toronto is unaffordable" issue is a middle-class dilemma, not a homeless persons. The market rent in the six is not the cause of homelessness nor is it a barrier to finding a home in the GTA.

So tent cities are okay but this isn’t? I love government logic, and a fine example of why we need far less government in our lives. People will always find a way to survive, we don’t need the government to save us.

It's almost like they don't want the homeless problem solved. Almost like they make more money and keep their jobs increasing the problem. Why the city is not stacking shipping containers to appropriate land they own to do the same basic thing instead of suing this guy is annoying. They could very easily build containers into legal small homes. It's not just the poorest that are going to be homeless soon. This depression that is coming is going to have 50% of the country homeless. The demand for tiny homes will be uncontrollable. It's the same old big money problem. The city pays with your money 50K for a 5K set of stairs. The problem with tiny houses is these crooks don't get their two stacks from the job. Their buddies don't get the kickbacks. And the minister doesn't get their bribe. Notice the federal and provincial corruption has metastasized since more women are in government?

If Toronto is setting up places for the homeless, why have they not already done so and why wait so long to say they are doing this (have yet to see this happen). Empty hotels due to covid could have been implemented for this a year ago, yet no one across the country is doing this, at least not that I have heard of.

I don't have a problem with the city controlling what happens on its public land, it's just too bad they didn't handle the situation a little more adroitly, or at least less litigiously. Khaleel has a good spirit, I like that; hopefully he and the city can come to a better accommodation than this.

OK let me ask you this: is he facilitating / enabling homelessness? Solving homelessness is a parallel issue: drug abuse / mental illness and creating a "trampoline" for those on welfare, not a "bed". I applaud his benevolence, but homelessness is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. Drug abuse and unavailable mental wellness is. You won't ultimately help homeless by providing ad-hoc shelters and providing porta-potties. You do it with actual care.

Issues are rarely this black and white. I have a hard time believing the City of Toronto is an absolute super villain laughing at the deaths of homeless and getting in the way of this man just so they can watch their city die. The issue is this video provided little for me to understand both sides of the story. Khaleel seems to be 100% in the right despite technically breaking a law but is there more to this that wasn't talked about? Are there other downsides that have come from this or other very serious concerns that might come from this that weren't explored here? Thank you for giving this subject matter attention. Thumbs up. I'm absolutely in favour of what Khaleel has done but at the same time I feel like I don't have all the facts. If there's more to why this could possibly be a negative thing I'd love to hear that side of the story.
