Why is UK in the Grip of an "Uncontrollable" Bamboo Crisis? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Invasive bamboo is becoming a major problem for British homeowners, many of whom do not realise that most bamboo species are invasive if left unchecked. The plant is punching through paving stones, asphalt and even the foundations of homes in the UK. It is leaving homeowners with hefty bills and legal battles. Why does this problem keep on growing? How did it start? Palki Sharma tells you.

Very important! Bamboo with a 'flat' on alternate sides between nodes is a 'running bamboo', and sends out long runners that will spread widely. If the stems are round, it is a 'clumping bamboo', and will still expand its footprint, but much more slowly. Just remember: Round sticks around, flat runs flat out.

4 years ago we bought a house with a garden. The previous owners had planted some bamboo. First we didn't notice but when the bamboo started to spread, we began to fight it. You can buy 2 different types of bamboo. One is a type that sends off rhizomes (not tendrils) that spread quickly, invading everywhere. The other type is clump forming (this is the type I bought). They are much tamer, slower growing, and will not go digging through walls. So, lesson to all - if you want bamboo, research first. Buy a clump forming variety only. All it takes is a bit of looking up on the internet first. The clump forming bamboos I have are very well behaved, only marginally larger than the original plants I bought 6 years ago. Similarly, my neighbour has a plant that I reckon is about 30-35 years old, very well behaved, clump forming variety. No one is scared here.

We dont seem to have a problem with bamboo in Hereford, I know where some is growing but it is in municipal gardens and deliberately planted. What we also have in Hereford is the dreaded Japanese knotweed, which is an attractive plant but grows where it is not wanted and is very hard to get rid of. The remedy for bamboo is to import some pandas, if that results in a plague of pandas I dont think anybody would mind. I wouldn't say Japanese knotweed is a major problem in Hereford, but it is in some other cities. In some parts of the country there is also a problem with rhodedendrons which are also hard to get rid of. In some cities we have flocks of Indian Ringneck Parakeets, which are attractive birds well liked by the public but could become a pest.

"Taking what doesn't belong to them" said of bamboo legitimately bought and imported. Are we to understand that the growing of potatoes in India is a species of theft? Or tomatoes. India is the 2nd-largest grower of tomatoes, but the plant comes from South America. Clearly a species of Indian colonialist theft. Of course that's crazy. It's absolutely wonderful that Indians are able to grow and eat food plants that came from elsewhere. Be equally rational about other people.

He probably meant the specie of Bamboo that you would have wanted instead of that invasive species that is not serving you well. About theft, British pride on their ability to steal and see the history of past colonisation as their glory days because they benefited from it. They feel no shame. It's white culture to wash out their crimes by lecturing the people they committed those crimes against. Be a racist and preach others to not be racist. Occupy native lands, establish illegitimate country on native soil, then go on waging wars against other natives countries around the world.

Indians never colonised South America, Asia or Africa, stole their resources, planted seeds of conflict still causing wars, and genocided the people. So no, tomatoes in India is not the equivalent of Bamboos in UK. Colonial empires based on theft and pillage make a big difference, you can't pretend they don't exist. Crummy racist.

We have a problem with bamboo in England because we have these stupid things called BOX STORES (who pay no tax in our economy) they import crap from all over the world and they sell it to people at a discount price so we end up with things like bamboo and Japanese knot weed in gardens destroying the foundations of houses. 💯

We don't plant bamboos in our homes in the tropical countries, they are grown faraway in the fields...and are used for many utilities, mainly for structures and construction help. This is what happens when west would find any normal things, find it exotic and steal it for ornamental use. Bamoo is just a grass, a real bigas* grass and like all grass, it grows parallelly through its roots underneath the soil.

NE Indians and neighbouring countries knows exactly how to own the bamboo plant I think, from eating tender shoots which helps to keep their population in control (not all bamboo shoots are eaten among my tribe) as use for particular species differs from making strong posts to crafting delicate household items. Otherwise the whole NE would have been engulfed by bamboos by now. Better to learn more before owning than regretting later😊

What a crazy story, there maybe a few houses that have been affected, but despite being nearly 60 years old, I've not heard of this first hand from anyone here in the UK. The sterotypic racism at the end is very out of date. There is no one alive today who had anything to do with the colonial era that many European countries, unfortunately took part in - are we going to blame every country's current population for wrongs perpetrated in history, every country has something in it's past.

There are two types of bamboo, the running type and the clumping type. The running type where its rhizomes will pop up many meters from the parent plant, is the problem they're speaking about. Clumping bamboo can still spread that is why you need to install a deep barrier to contain it.
