@@StankLip From what I read, your 15.6" would then be like using a 39" screen (250% scaling) and therefore, based on your resolution (QHD), the resulting PPI is just 75.31, down from 188.28 (if not scaled). So I am surprised it would be anywhere near QHD quality.

This video will have a lot of gains for you once you hit that ONE application that renders 'fuzzy' or has jagged lines. I work in an industry that has a lot of quirky applications. The frame buffer can get very finicky if you render bitmaps when scaling.

The real key here is to have two monitors that have the same dimensions and resolutions, for example if your original monitor is, a 21" monitor that has 1680x1050 resolution, then you should add a second monitor that is also 21" and has 1680x1050 resolution. Stuff will then easily move from one to the other, without issues.

Sometimes i wonder if MS's programmers use W10 or not, because W10 feels like it's made after a checklist instead of to make things easier/better/faster for the users in the long run Example: In Ubuntu, if you point at the volume icon and scroll with your mouse, _the volume changes,_ that feels like a "i want" feature, not a "modern design" feature

Because in the bad old days it wasn't necessary, and speed was more important than scaling. Fast forward and the hardware got powerful enough to support vector graphics at a speed that's acceptable and there were tens of thousands of programs written for the old model that would break in all matters of horrible ways if the OS suddenly would require everything to use vectors. And as there really wasn't that many really high DPI displays there wasn't many who thought it was important enough to worry about. So MS stuck their head in the sand and hoped for the best. And then truly high DPI displays came about at reasonable prices... MS has been working on the scaling, but compared to other operating systems they have far more baggage in the form of old software that people rely on to make a living. There are software using all kinds of weird tricks such as calling up menus and dialogs at coordinates far out from the areas you see on screen, and forcing pointer coordinates so they can "click" on buttons and select text fields to enter parameters while nothing is shown on screen where the user can see what the program is doing. Make to much changes to how the coordinate system works and things like that will break. The tile whatever system with apps is however new and should not come with any baggage in the form of archaic calls to strange panels and dialogs that hasn't been officially supported since Win3.11, and as such those apps should be much better at scaling. Don't know how true that is though as I absolutely hate that GUI and do my best to avoid seeing or using it.

Ryan Martin at least they should make the bloody text vector based. It's not like the applications giving bitmaps for texts. Sure icons might be blurry but it's just incredibly ugly and stupid to make that behavior the same on texts too

Well, it wasn't just slow in the past, it was VERY slow. Like, a computer design from 1979 can render a 320x192 image, but I wouldn't count on it to draw more than maybe 1-2000 polygons in a second if you're extremely lucky, and even that's only if you can devote just about the entire CPU time of your system to drawing graphics, and nothing else. (in case you're wondering why that's relevant; vector graphics are 2d, but based on the same principles, and can in fact be even more complex shapes.) Now imagine that you want the UI to be somewhat responsive; So... You're going to want to keep graphics performance at something reasonable, like, 20 fps at a minimum. That means you're looking at between 300-600 vector elements onscreen at once. But everything is a vector; your window, all the buttons, the icons on those buttons, the text onscreen. (every letter when drawn using vectors would be a fairly complex shape, probably a 20 sided polygon or more.) You quickly run out of performance, and your framerate tanks, and everything becomes really unresponsive. And keep in mind you can only draw those 3-600 vectors if you're not doing anything else! In other words, the computer can't actually be computing anything! So... Performance is an understatement. And while computers did get more powerful into the 90's.... You're probably talking 1995, 1996 before they had enough power to be able to do vector graphics at a decent speed. By 2000ish you had decently powerful capabilities to do vector graphics. (conceptually, vector graphics and 3d rendering have a lot of overlap, and by that point you had systems that could draw many millions of polygons a second, which translates to being able to do 2d vector graphics at high speed as well.) Windows of course, by the year 2000 already had huge amounts of legacy code to deal with. Mac OS did too to some extent, but apple simply didn't care as much about breaking old software, and had more control over their hardware and software ecosystem as well, so things were more predictable.

I've been using 2 screens since 2005 but dropped it earlier this year to increase productivity. No more distracting emails or social media, just focused on the present task. As a result, no more scaling issues! PS I think it's been pretty good - it's only a problem when you have half of an application on one screen (Surface @work, 200%) and on a fHD display with 100% settings. Screenshots can also be fun but otherwise it hasn't been a big issue for me since Windows 8.1

I first encountered this back in 2013 when I found the computer industry changed screen resolutions on me from 1200 to 1080. My Alienware laptop was 1920x1200 and I got a new monitor to replace an ailing external monitor, and lo and behold it didn't work. Now I get a few of the other reasons why beyond just the resolution change.

I use three different displays (2160p, 1080p and 1680x1150). I run the two low resolution screens at their native resolution and the UHD one at simulated 1440p which results in everything being the right size but much sharper than on the other displays. Dragging programs between the displays is no problem either and all of that on an old Mac Pro from 2009 with an old macOS from 2015.

What distro are people using that their scaling works fine on Linux!? jfc I have a 4k display on my laptop and tried Ubuntu 17.10 & 16.10 and the scaling is complete garbage. Many applications were flat out unusable. The OS had no option to change scaling behavior/percentage based on what app it is, only a static system-wide zoom (and yes I asked on the forums to make sure there wasn't the option hidden away somewhere). So any programs that weren't created with proper dpi scaling in mind (crazy common, even for Linux applications, especially for older ones) were either A: Freakishly tiny, making them unreadable B: Super blurry or C: Super blurry with some elements like buttons getting clipped at the edges of the window or getting smooshed together, meaning important things were literally unclickable. At least Windows 10 gives the option to change how zoom is handled with every different application! Stop pimping linux when it's not handled well there either.

You mean the DE not the distro. KDE can scale perfectly. I use Kubuntu as my daily driver on a Full HD screen. Force Font DPI to 120 and it works great for me. Even the window icons scale along with the text since KDE uses SVGs. To be fair KDE has a scaling option but I've had mixed results with it on fractional scaling so I simply went for font DPI instead. Also, Unity can scale quite well. I've used Ubuntu 16.04 without any issues on FHD.

Personally I have the exact opposite problem when connecting my qHD laptop with external monitors. On windows the majority of the applications reacts properly. The only one that gave me trouble was Eclipse, but... You know... Java... I'm a TA and every time I connected to a projector Windows reacts in a predictable and acceptable way, you should see my colleagues with OS X or Linux... Every single time they enter in class they need to start messing around the configuration panel and hope to find a good tradeoff. Differently Linux is a nightmare, practically no application scales properly and even the mouse pointer doesn't react properly. Wayland+Gnome after a hackaton last year finaly made it, on Ubuntu 17.10 it works, but I'll need to wait for Ubunti 18.04 to use it in a LTS.
