Not everyone wants to be 250 pounds 30 percent body fat, if someone wants to be smaller and lean and respectfully strong then that shouldn’t be a problem.

no kidding. that's a single cycle, with a deload week. the program is not the problem, the lifter is the problem.

@@davidmb3376 Not even that tbh. He most likely overdid in the accessory work. Volume is so low on 5/3/1 that even if you do the work at 100% you shouldn't get tendonitis after one bloody cycle.

@@davidmb3376 I will say BJJ is super grip heavy. Tendonitis is common. Adding lifting (probably overestimating his max?) Was probably the straw the broke the camel's back

I don't like how they always look so down upon guys that don't weigh as much as they would like them to weigh. I mean it's obvious they will need to be heavier if they want to lift heavier weights but SS can also convey that message without laughing at him first

REST is SO important. It is great to have that DHRIIVE to train hard BUT overtraining is actually a sign of mental weakness. When I discovered that I added in more rest days, stuck to the program, when I wanted to exercise on scheduled rest days I stopped myself and it was unbearable at first, I was fidgety and restless - BUT after a few weeks I got used to it and my body TRANSFORMED. My strength went through the roof!!! REST IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TRAINING!!!!!!!

Three days a week of two hour grappling sessions will tear your body up. Very hard to lift heavy in addition. Especially if you're 39.

Absolutely! 6 hours a week and especially if a lot of it is hard rolling, it will certainly fuck up your body at this age. Will have to sleep and eat a lot and train very very smartly.

165 pounds at 5'8" is perfectly reasonable. This is a 38 year old man with other priorities in his life than getting fat for an extra 200 pounds on his total. Once again Rippetoe shows his lack of self-awareness. The lesson learned here is don't ask pop-sci fitness "trainers" for real advice.

Those are my numbers right now, maybe add a quarter of an inch too I guess. I outperform these tub of lards in strength which makes it even more pathetic when you realize that if you put a wig on them, people would mistake them for ugly pregnant women lol

I love Rip, but he’s dead wrong here...he (and I doubt anyone in that room) has any idea how exhausting a 2 hour grappling session is...as a judo black belt and BJJ purple belt who is on the mats as much as this dude is, I’m telling you, you’re not gonna be able to run the LP and really max it outdoing both...figure out what your priorities are...if it’s strength, run the LP and cut the mat time back to one or two sessions a week...if it’s to be great at BJJ, then quit worrying about driving your squat numbers as high as you can and just lift enough to supplement your mat game...you’re not gonna be able to do both...trust me, I’ve tried...Chad Smith and Mike Isratel are both competitive BJJ players and stud lifters, check out what they say about it.

Guy didnt say he does BJJ and weight training the same day. I'm assuming here that he splits his BJJ and weight training days. His issue is his weight and strength, hes sore from the weight training not the grappling. If he's grappling then training he needs to cut that shit out. THAT BEING SAID my 114lbs girlfriend used to grapple (pre-covid) and weight train the same day, 2 hours grappling and then maybe an hour training, yes mostly machines and a little barbell training, but she ate like a fucking horse she'd put me to shame at the dinner table after a session.

@@davekooper Dave, if he’s rolling and lifting on separate days then that’s even worse, he’ll NEVER recover...better to consolidate the stressors and give yourself a recovery day...as someone who spends a lot of time on the mats AND was a one time competitive lifter, I’m telling you that you can’t do both at the same time and max out your potential in both, one or the other will suffer...sounds to me like the guy is worried about strength right now, so walk away from the mats for a few months and eat like a horse and run the SS LP...

@@HAL-dm1eh Yup I've no reason to make it up, I'd originally advised her not to as I was worried she'd wear herself out and end up with an injury. She hated weight training before grappling, that would always exhaust her, otherway round she found fine. She wasn't deadlifting the, 300lbs this dude was pulling, but she'd only started the gym around the same time she starting grappling so her numbers werent up there.

I have had success on 5/3/1. I run that in my off seasons. When preparing for a meet I would always run the conjugate/wsbb or a wenning routine, but I always did well on 5/3/1.

Program designed by a very good former powerlifter "Jim wendler" it runs of %'s of your one rep Max in each of the big lifts (bench, deadlift,squat,over head press) the 5-3-1 comes from the rep ranges. Week one is 3 sets of 5 reps 65-75-85% of your one rep Max week 2 is 3 sets of 3 reps 70-80-90 week 3 is 3 sets first set is 5 reps of 75% next set 3reps of 85% an last set one rep (or more if you can) 95%. When a guy pushing a fitness program thinks his program is more important than your girlfriend, you're not joining a fitness program you're joining a cult. Don't let Rippetoe bully you. 5/3/1 is a good program that can be tailored many ways to include adding additional recovery because of training for sports such as BJJ.

I hate rippetoe and clicked the video because I wanted to see why it was suggested... But he does raise a point. If you are stalling you should eat more...and if your girl is upset that you are gaining a lil fluff because you are strength training (which is to be somewhat expected) it is time to maybe address that with your girl or seek a new relationship.... Because it seems superficial my dude Side note. 5/3/1 is a good program... But he is asking this random dude on the internet with his own training ideology to advise him on a program that is based In someone else's ideology... It is flat out stupid.

@@PenguinzFtMFW You make a good point and I agree that asking about a competitor's training plan is in poor form. The way around that is don't answer the question or state that you cannot comment on a plan with which you are unfamiliar. Making fun of someone because they disagree with you accomplishes nothing and is childish. As for gaining weight being "superficial," not necessarily. Being fat has long-term health consequences. While most younger guys can go through a "bulking" phase and then lose the fat quickly, that's not always the case. It's much better not to get fat in the first place - trust me. And I stand by my statement that telling something to find a new girlfriend because they disagree with the Starting Strength method shows cult-like behavior. Starting Strength is just a workout program FFS. As much as Rippetoe wants to be "Uncle Rippy" to his followers, he is no guru and Starting Strength is neither a religion nor a way of life. Anyone who thinks otherwise has other issues.

5/3/1 is much better for long-term progress than SS, by a long shot. It’s also much more customizable and even enjoyable, at least, for me. 5/3/1>SS, and it’s not even close.

I think a lot of it can be mental. When I started SS last April my 3x5 squats were 185. Once I got close to two plates, I started to “feel” that I was getting “stuck”. To cut to the chase, I wasn’t stuck. I just had to keep eating, seeping, and training. My LP did slow down some, but micro plates helped. The same thing happened at 302 lbs, but I got through it and am now squatting at 350 across sets. I desperately want to squat four plates for reps by the end of April, the end of my first year of training. Thanks, Rip.

The only way 5/3/1 doesn't work is if you don't follow it correctly. It's a simple linear strength progression. I guess people will find a way to mess it up no matter how simple. But like someone said in the comments, you're doing something wrong if you're getting injured and you have a sub 1000 powerlifting total. Probably lifting too damn heavy to start out.

People do your fives. I know you get into a rut occasionally, but keep at it. I was stuck at 165 on the shoulder press for a year. This week I’m at 220 for my sets of five. Next week I’ll probably be at 225… I was stuck at 245 on the bench for nine months. I kept at it and now i’m doing 285 for my sets. I’m 5’9” 200 pounds. Keep at it you will get there

Not to mention that 531 Wendler is the wrong program for this guy. Wendler is for advanced lifters. This guy is still a novice. He should be able to recover waaayyyy more stress. Why not Starting Strength? Perfect fit for him (man i' d so love to be able to do it again with my current numbers) and he seems aware of its existence since he knows the podcast.

@@dadbod488 I got what you were saying. I still think 50lbs is too much weight to add on, even over 4 years. But think about a guy who is 5'6 and 205lbs. He is not trying trying to be elite. He just wants his numbers up. I think he said the guy was in his late 30's. It's not like the guy will gain 10lbs of muscle at his age, unless he is in his first 2 years of doing any training at all. If the guy busted his ass in the gym and gained weight slowly, he could get his numbers up a lot more. I think his effort is lacking. If anything cut back on the BJJ training to 2 days a week.

@@72Dexter72Manley72 I know when I started training the big 3s I was about 165 bw at 5'9".... I sit about 205 now and it added a TON of poundage to my big 3. I thought I was just weak (I was, and still kinda am lol) but I was also way too small to move any considerable numbers. Knowledge is also strength 👍

@@dadbod488 Great man. But you are 3 inches taller than that guy. 205 is probably great for you but not for that shorter guy. So that's why I'm saying if he puts on 20-25lbs slowly he will be good to go. His bench and deadlift will jump up. But of course he has to bust ass. The only lift he will struggle with progression on is The press.

Sounds like he’s overdoing it. He didn’t say what assistance template he’s doing with 5/3/1, which makes all the difference in the world. He prob needs to back down to just the base program with PR sets. He needs to follow JW’s training philosophy: start too light and move too slowly. That coupled with dialing hack the assistance work and he should be good to go. Also, no one wants to be a fat ass. Don’t tell him to drink all that milk. We can only put on lean body mass so quickly everything after that is fat that he’ll have to take off eventually. And the extra fat is going to give him extra aromatase which will hurt his testosterone maintenance.

5/3/1 is jim wendlers program it's a simple strait forward approach to training for size and strength. It is great if you want to go up slowly over a long period of time. If you want to go faster and push faster go with SS. I don't because I work in the construction field and three full body days drive me to the ground. Up to you I suggest buying the 5/3/1 and beyond 5/3/1 on amazon books it's like 20 bucks.

Not tolerating the intensity? It’s his first cycle of 5/3/1. The heaviest you’re going is 85% for a set of 1+. And it’s gonna be pretty hard to get fat if you’re 5’8 and 165 unless you eat complete shit, train with minimal effort, and do zero conditioning work
