Honestly the white board and the whole set up is kinda what makes it. If it was some fancy green screen production it just wouldn’t be the same.

When Shannon announced he was retiring the white boards I was shocked and I'm glad it didn't stick. It's quite comforting to me and is part of his brand. No one else could do what he does and gets taken as seriously as he does. I don't know if he's aware of how many content creators were inspired by his old school approach.

Favorite place for hockey news because it feels like you care and you’re doing this because you feel like doing it. There is something strangely authentic about having a whiteboard over the high production values that news media have and the attempts at replicating that by some other hockey channels.

As a North Vancouver guy for the first 34 years of my life, I totally know what "not leaving town for years" is like. Where are you gonna go? Hours into the Fraser Valley to be...where? 100 Mile House? And The Wack is a long way away from Downtown. I've been following you since that first great Vegas year, when Gallant was the coach and they became my team. Because in the meantime I had moved to the US, the Canucks had gone to the finals in 2011 and I had had no idea since nobody even whispers about hockey in the south. This year I've been following close as the home town does well. Some thoughts. First, I watched the Markiplier video yesterday as well and am not surprised at your empathy with his feelings. Those of us with long term grindy projects know how it feels. You love the work, but there is no time off. If you get off the rollercoaster you risk becoming irrelevant and forgotten about quickly. Not to mention income depends on it. Second, I've deliberately watched some games played by other teams than Van/VGK/Tor (WHY am I developing a fanship for the Leafs?! What is wrong with me?) and seen these other teams make the same mistakes the Canucks do when they're in a slump. Giveaways, can't hit the net, not great effort. It's not just your team, folks. Since you're only looking at one team you think it's only them...but I assure you it is not. Trying to explain to someone who is not from Vancouver how the town lives and dies on how the Canucks played can be challenging ;-) Third, the game feels like it has really changed since the 90s when I last really focused on it. I'm similar in age as you, Shannon, watched 1982 as a kid, 1994 with beer, missed out on 2011 as explained above...we'll see what happens this year and I'll be watching. The game feels faster, less dump and chase. Something about how the neutral zone is used. Anyway, glad you're here. Your channel is one I often watch late at night, and I look forward to those Saturday night power rankings!

You've mentioned this in previous videos that the more hockey you've watched, the less "hateful" you've become of the teams you don't like. This is something that's really rubbed off on me. Of course I have teams I would never cheer for, but since I've tuned in to more games, the pure, unadulterated disgust for those franchises and their fanbases has all but disappeared. So thanks for helping to mellow me out and become more of a "hockey" fan than that of specific teams.

@@Tomatohater64 It depends. One of the most challenging things is when you have to pay a premium to attract players to your team. It's like a tax. I think for example Buffalo has had that because people don't want to play there - because the team was weak for a long time and the terrible weather. On the flip side, you can live in a castle in Buffalo for the same price as a two bedroom condo in Toronto, New York or LA.

Well, you certainly have the right personality for it (leading a channel on KZfaq), Shannon. And Yvonne is a nice stand in...as are the cats and rabbit. You seem to have the right feel for how long any given addition works or doesn't. Even in my advanced age, I still realize-no matter how bored-hockey is a sport. With or without it, the world keeps moving on...the Earth keeps spinning...and we keep polluting/destroying everything. Anyway, with that said, I admit to being more excited to visit your site when the Kings actually win a game. Yet, considering their history (even with two Stanley Cups), for 50+ years, they seem to exist to produce heart attacks and disappointment and disgust. What feels so strange for this season-and, yes, they still come up short with their GM's decisions-one night, they will shock you with a good win, and then follow up with an errant loss. Alas, nothing has really changed, with the exception of a really good ownership group. Now, let's see if Blake can avoid being a disappointment-again-as he was as a player who bolted for Colorado. Note: I suddenly hate myself for having added Vegas to my list of teams I pull for. They weren't supposed to outplay teams that've been around for most of my life> rl

A few thoughts: 1) I think your goal of being an ‘every NHL fan’ approach is great. 2) The lack of extreme emotions in your videos is a huge plus. As you point out, there’s more than enough of that in the world and media, today. That said, your delivery isn’t boring. It’s relaxing. 3) The fact that you have teams that you cheer for without gloating when they do great is a positive. It allows you to demonstrate a fan’s frustration when those teams aren’t doing well. If one is a long term fan of a team, the days of being frustrated far out number the happy times. In summary it makes you more relatable. 4) If you ever wanted to reduce your work load (less note taking) the daily game reviews could be reduced to a few key observations for each game, or per period of that game. That is rather than the detailed game descriptions that you currently provide. Just one person’s suggestion. Thanks for the great work.

The Hockey Guy is great character and so relatable, i bet Shannon is also great guy behind the "jersey". Thanks for your hard work, your input makes even the whole NHL product better.

Shannon is a real one. You should go to an Avs game in Denver sometime.

Came here last year when I started re following hockey. I love watching your videos because of the objectivity. I’m a fan of the game, and a few teams, but I like how you don’t have the emotion involved in the videos. It’s cool to see that you chased a dream and 8 years later you’re loving where you’re at, even with the hard work and the long days/nights. It’s just cool to see! Keep it up 👍

I've liked your game reviews and team ranking for how well measured and thoughtfully they are put together and then also for some sudden escapes of humor that I have more than just few times had to pause the video to laugh it off. Glad to hear it's rewarding too since much goes into it.

Keep on being yourself and doing what you're doing, Shannon. That's why we subscribe. For people who want the swearing and the roaring and shouting and waving of hands and the hyperbole, there's lots of other places to go for that. The rest of us DON'T want it, that's why we come here. I always say it's a lot like just getting together with a friend for coffee and chatting about hockey. That's the way I want to keep it. Love the white boards, love the puck boards, love the jerseys and especially love the power rankings. Those and a nice pot of tea are how I start my Sunday morning.

Been watching you for like four years and it's the only way I can keep a pulse on the entire league which allows me to hyper focus on my team! Only person who delivers this level of detail without a bunch of filler and junk. Thanks for all you do!

Your personality is what makes it. Not robotic reporting. Bring back the jersey having a meaning over the random make sure all jerseys are worn. Fantastic Job don’t change too much 😉

Thanks for this - very, very interesting episode. I’ve been watching for quite a while now and still think you do a great job, and it was really cool to hear your side of it. The Star Trek reference and the Moe Lemay story both made me laugh out loud, and I think it is really super cool that actual players watch. I can’t imagine a bigger validation.

The unbiased reviews mixed with the very natural set is really what has always appealed to me about this channel. There’s a hundreds of channels that just glaze their favorite teams and use the same digital displays, so it’s refreshing to see someone physically keeping track of all of it and covering every team equally. The whiteboard, power ranking board and sweater collection have just become iconic when paired with the relaxed and wholesome attitude.
