I came to the realization that I was people pleasing so much that I didn't like myself anymore, but even after years of trying to gain other people's approval they still did not accept me. They raised the bar, or the expectation, higher and higher. Pleasing them was impossible. So when I realized that and chose to be the me who I like and who I am proud of it made me much happier. I'm still lonely around people because I feel like an outsider, almost like I recognize the game they are playing and choose not to join in. I haven't found many people who are like me and who choose to try to be authentic and true to themselves rather than participate in the social rat race. But I would rather like who I am and feel lonely at times than feel like I have to fight to be accepted while hating myself.

It's my children who criticize me. It's a habit they learned growing up. Walking away means I walk away from grandchildren who need my enthusiasm. When I try to tolerate their complaints, I end up ruminating about the injustice. I feel tension in my body, hyper alert to betraying myself & trying to fit in, so I can love the grandkids.

My father was that person for me. He was very vocal about disliking me but he thought I had to be involved and agree with him because I was part of the family. From his viewpoint that is just what families had to do. And he was the patriarch and we all had to listen to him. There was no escaping that situation, but if I gave in it would just invite more emotional abuse from him. Going to counseling taught me how to set personal boundaries. I would go to family functions that I wanted to go to, I clearly stated to my father what my boundaries were, and if at any point I felt uncomfortable or that my boundaries were being crossed I had a plan on how to leave and where to go. The situation wasn't ideal, but I didn't let my father control me or guilt me into anything. The same skills helped me coexist with toxic coworkers and other people in my life I could not avoid. I could establish as little contact as possible, set healthy boundaries, communicate what I needed, and have a way of getting out of the situation or taking a break when I was uncomfortable. I hope this helps!

My daughter caught me using 2 mirrors to see if the hait clip was straight on the back of my head and she said "the back of your head is none of your business" and I love that. I love the idea that other peoples ideas about me are also none of my business and they can go away and find people they like. But sometimes there are people we cant avoid like extended family (which if they are truly awful you can walk away from) but inlaws? Friends in law? Work colleagues? The "inescapables" as I call them. Sometimes people pleasing is a waste of energy but sometjmes its diplomacy for the benefit of our loved ones.

It’s about choosing our battles wisely and maintaining peace without compromising our well-being. You're navigating these challenges thoughtfully, which is commendable. Kind Regards, David

I found this very helpful to hear. What it doesn't cover is when one has unwanted people wanting your time and freindship when one is not feeling strong. I always find that on some insecure days when I want to be left alone is the time when I feel the most put on by others. When one is not feeling sociable and is using their time to reflect but friends or collegues are pushing for you to be more social. I find this situation very hard to manage, especially as by being a people pleaser in the past that others do not except this change.

I’m in the same boat. Got dumped by a 34 year friend who is now vindictive towards me and has completely blocked me. I didn’t even do anything wrong, it was a misunderstanding/misinterpretation over a minor issue. I’m still struggling with it.

Hi @peggyjeangregory, That’s a thoughtful question. While Maslow’s hierarchy highlights the importance of love, recognising our ability to cultivate self-love and inner peace can be equally vital. It’s about balancing external connections with strengthening our inner resilience and self-sufficiency. I have a lot of difficulty with my reactions to criticism, my mother never compliments me on anything and occasionally makes criticisms about my weight (that I should lose it), being late (even if I show up on time) and sleeping in late (I work at night). She's elderly so I visit her regularly every weekend and when she makes a critical comment it makes me want to pull away and I usually skip a week. I understand that what she thinks of me is none of my business but is there a strategy I can use to deal with these critical comments? Should I say something back? Ignore it completely? Change the subject? I usually freeze and say nothing or try to defend myself.

Hi @V.E.R.O., Thank you for sharing your experience. Dealing with criticism, especially from loved ones, can be challenging. Here are a few strategies that might help: 1. **Set Boundaries:** Politely let your mother know how her comments affect you. For example, you might say, "I appreciate your concern, but these comments are hurtful to me." 2. **Stay Calm:** Practice staying calm and composed when criticism arises. This can help you respond thoughtfully rather than reacting emotionally. 3. **Redirect the Conversation:** Gently change the subject to something more positive or neutral. This can help steer the conversation away from criticism. 4. **Self-Affirmation:** Remind yourself of your own worth and accomplishments. Focusing on your positive attributes can help reduce the impact of negative comments. It's important to take care of yourself and maintain your inner peace. Maybe I’ve misunderstood what you actually mean here, but I can think of loads of examples where it matters what others think…. For instance, going for a job or promotion, if you’re in court or stopped by the police ! Ime sorry for this one, but it’s still relevant…different religions or ideology’s, ( I don’t think I need to expand on this) could have a massive effect on us. I understand from a purely spiritual perspective, but this is not written in stone what you say ? Please help me to understand this, because this is the first time I’ve actually disagreed with you. Thanks and Love. Mike.

Hi Mike, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for your honesty. You raise important points. Indeed, there are situations where the opinions of others can have significant implications, such as in professional or legal contexts. Our teachings often focus on the personal and spiritual dimensions, encouraging individuals to find a balance between valuing constructive feedback and maintaining a core sense of self that isn't overly swayed by external judgments. It's about discerning which opinions to take to heart and which to let pass, enhancing our well-being without compromising our integrity or professional responsibilities. Your engagement with these ideas is valuable, and discussions like this deepen our collective understanding. Kind Regards, David
