Intellectualization tries to think of reasons why we shouldn't feel a certain way. Unfortunately, when we focus on what we don't want, we actually feed what we don't want with more energy and actually end up creating more of what we don't want. That is why mindfulness is so important. Mindfulness is about observing your emotions without attachment or judgment. Staying present in the moment takes practice. But the benefit is that we can become aware of our full range of emotions. We can develop the emotional intelligence to know whether our emotions are serving us to create the kind of life experiences we desire.

Yes, sometimes when I'm feeling down I tell myself I'm being ungrateful and negative. But I need to remind myself that it's okay to let myself feel those emotions and not bottle them in. As my friend tells me, it's important to heal & grow through our emotions. Thanks for this message!

Over the years, I've really learned to accept emotions as they come whereas before there would be certain emotions that I would resist. I've just realized that all emotions are valid and it's okay to feel the way I feel in a given moment. Instead of pushing the emotion away, I just feel whatever it is for the appropriate of time then move on!

The biggest problem is people letting their emotions control them. Instead of reacting to them, we should observe them and question that emotion. Great video my friend! Just subbed for more :)

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, I believe emotions are more powerful than even our thoughts. And creating space to allow them to pass is so important in living a life that isn't intentional rather than reactive. Thanks for being here!

I have a 1 year old daughter and it is such a joy to see her express all the emotions she is feeling. The society will soon teach her that she can't express certain emotions and that she will have to suppress them but for now, she is just on the outside exactly how she is on the inside... and it is beautiful :). I am hoping that the more I am practicing mindfulness, the more she will see it and adopt it as something that is natural and it will be easier for her than it is for me :).

I used to deny my emotions and try to logically explain why i have them but now i allow them and try to take a moment to understand why i’m having certain emotions in the moment. Being self aware is so important because it could build up your emotional intelligence. Great video, man 😊

The examples you gave sound the same to me. The distinction I’m trying to make is fully acknowledging and feeling ones emotions versus using the thinking mind to bypass having to feel those emotions. Hope that makes sense.

Hm...definitely agree. It's really easy for me to rationalize why I should be feeling a certain way, but at times you just gotta let your emotions go. Definitely able to reflect on how you are afterwards, though after your emotions have passed.

Emotions are energy. If we suppress or deny them, that energy will go somewhere else, and can be redirected inwards or outwards in unhealthy ways. Learning to feel emotions without intellectualizing them is tough, but i’m learning!

I think you have hit on a great point. Modern psychiatry has, for too long, been based upon this exact desire to intellectualize emotions and, in turn, stop feeling them. I have seen one too many college professors try to be funny by talking about subjects (that I won't repeat here) that many students find embarrassing and then judging them for their feelings/reactions about the above statements. There is a misconception that learning can only take place when the environment is disrupted; but this just confuses the student more. I prefer some good old fashioned research to accomplish this; ergo my affinity for online classes! lol! Great video my friend!

There are numerous times where I've tried to rationalize something instead of accepting the emotional weight and outcome. I've learned it's better to allow the emotions to flow through you in that moment because intellectualizing them only causes the emotions and mental state to become problematic.

Once again a lovely place where you are at! I really love the way you talk about the mind. You are so right that we cannot use our minds correctly if we suppress and reject certain emotions and/or events. Solving things on a emotional level is often confused indeed with solving a problem. When a problem is solved, it does not necessarily need to mean that it is also solved emotionally. The problem might not be existing anymore externally but still might be existing internally. It is such a great tactic to just sit down and just experience the emotion, instead of losing yourself in it! Like this you are able to regain control and learn from it. Mindfulness is so important and beneficial. Love this video Mike! You explain everything so well!!!

Hey mike! Solid video man, i made a recent vid on a tangent of this.. the mindfulness of our emotions can be a powerful tool. Emotional intelligence as you said is big.. I think we have a lot to learn from our emotions as they are there for a reason. Instead of intellectualizing the negative emotion away, we can become more mindful of them and be understanding that they are there for reasons and come to be okay with having them. I think once we understand this concept as you discussed, we can move forwards instead of being caught up in our past.

is it considered intellectualization if you try to understand your emotions and why they arise without being neglectful of them? i used to intellectualize all my problems but i noticed that it consequentially leads to me suppressing some negative emotions as you said, but im starting to practise to feel whatever emotion i feel, understand why i might feel that way and not be self-shaming of it.
