then when there is no middle child, the oldest becomes both the oldest and the middle at the same time. every thing is your fault. the younger one is bad because you did not set a good example. the younger one always get the first pick because the older one must learn to give in. and the older one breaks all the rules so the younger on gets away with everything later in life.... getting to go out late... sleepover, friends birthday parties... when the older one does not have such experiences in life.

Oldest child gets the worst discipline and parents make all their rookie mistakes on us, but we also get to be the leader/authority when the parents aren’t around so there’s that degree of respect there. Youngest child parents too old to care so they get away with everything and they get babied forever. Middle child gets the short end of both sticks, but as an oldest child I hated it that my parents were so much stricter with me than my younger siblings. There was this “you should know better!” attitude. I was also expected to get higher grades, probably because my parents spent the most attention tutoring me as a kid, whereas I tutored my younger siblings bc my parents weren’t gonna go through that twice. So they felt the most invested in me getting good grades. So when I did, it was almost as if they got to check something off their list and when the younger siblings did bad I got blamed bc I was supposed to tutor them rather than them getting in trouble for being lazy lol. Lots of older kids experience this. Interestingly it actually made me get better grades overall because nothing reinforces skills than teaching them to other people so I got dang good and it also helped later on when I was a uni lecturer I was really good right out of the gate with no teaching training. Edit to add: the middle child was a boy and the oldest and youngest were girls so my brother got special treatment for being the only boy so he’s probably not representative of all middle children, but I do think that setup evened out any anti-middle-child bias there could have been. Also I’m definitely the most independent and responsible of my sibs so I def have my parents to thank for that.

Unlike most of this video, my parents are treating me like the oldest/child one due to being with autism, while my able sisters can be independent and care themselves.
