It's a country with something to offer everyone, from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto. In this video, I share my top reasons why Japan is my favorite travel destination. From the delicious food to the kind and welcoming people, there's something about Japan that just keeps drawing me back.
Here are just a few of the reasons why I love Japan:
The culture: Japan has a rich and unique culture that has been shaped by centuries of history. From the traditional tea ceremony to the vibrant anime and manga scene, there's always something new to learn and experience.
The food: Japanese cuisine is some of the best in the world. From sushi and ramen to tempura and yakitori, there's something for everyone to enjoy. And the best part is, it's all relatively affordable.
The people: Japanese people are known for being kind, polite, and welcoming. Even if you don't speak Japanese, you're sure to feel at home in Japan.
The scenery: Japan has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, from the snow-capped mountains of the Alps to the cherry blossoms of Kyoto. There's always something to see and do, no matter what time of year you visit.

Fun story for you... I was in Japan this past June and forgot my jacket on the train (this was in Hokkaido where it gets cool at night). I went to the station staff to let them know and they were able to contact the train conductor within 5 minutes. The lady working at the station was worried that I would be cold but I reassured her a few times that I would be ok. Then she let me know that I could pick it up the next day at the last station, 3 hours down the track from where I was (the next day I was going there anyway). When I picked up the jacket it was labeled and perfectly folded, what great service!!!

I suppose for a local the service isn't to par compared to a tourist. I dropped my suica card on the train and called them to retrieve it. They said they found it and will mail it to me via COD.

We were there in August for the 1st time. My hubby left his backpack on the train, we were able to get it back all labeled and tagged as well. We LOVED Japan!

I have a similar story but with our JR passes that I accidentally dropped in Hakone. It was returned to me within 30 mins. Somebody from the other station rode to the station where we were at to return it. This was during our first trip. We've been coming back every year since (minus the time they were closed during the pandemic). Have been to almost 20 countries (Europe, Asia, Americas) and yet, Japan remains my number 1.

What I loved about Japan the most is the people. I blossomed and turned into a social butterfly once I moved here. Shopkeepers, customers, service providers, everyone in the supermarkets and restaurants… they’re just so considerate and nice. It is refreshing not to fear being out and about.

Just got back from my first ever trip to Japan. 10 days across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima/Miyajima. You hit the nail on the head in so many ways. The architectural blend is incredible. The people and their consideration for others is even better, but perhaps what I’ll miss most is the public transportation and clean public toilets 😂 it’s the little things…oh and being able to eat massive amounts of high quality foods without gaining any notable weight.

Japan looks like an amazing place. I love the juxtaposition between the old and new. Super modern yet steeped with ancient tradition. I've never been but one of things I love most is how much they value and cherish the elderly. 💕🐪

I really have enjoyed visiting Japan over the years. Been there four times and each time is amazing. Yes, the food is great and the shopping is nice, but what I enjoy the most about it is the culture and the people. It's clean and the people treat each other with respect (minus the pushing in the train during rush hour). Can't wait to go back.

Well put. I've travelled all over the world, and live in China for a few years. Japan is my favorite place to travel. The people are SO nice and polite. I never had to worry about getting ripped off. Yes, there is a language barrier, but they are SO efficient and the people are so patient that is never really seemed to be an issue.

I love all those drinks you can grab from the vending machines or convenience stores, all the different teas, milk teas, coffee (with or without milk), matcha latte, different flavors of Fanta or other sodas, and, despite the name, „pocari sweat“… I had over 20 different drinks during my 2 week trip in June

Your friend called it the golden cage, I call it the safest adventure you can have: A language I can’t speak or even read (street names in smaller cities), exotic culture and food (although a lot is obviously known wherever you live), everything is totally different. But everything is also safe, reliable, on time. To cut it short: it’s your (and my) favorite destination, because it’s the best. You say it all - Hightech, Culture, Tradition, safety, THE PEOPLE, the food (even snacks from 7-Eleven), (anime) shopping, public transport, reliability. The vending machines…

I saw a documentary on Japan's lost & found and over 90% of items find their owner, and it's small things like umbrellas too! I hesitate to ask for directions because they literally walk you there. I just want to be pointed in the right direction.

My first memory of Japan was from 2003 when I was stationed in Sasebo. As part of base orientation, they took us out into town to Hoka Hoka to get some absolutely delicious Bento boxes. Our guide wouldn't let us use forks. They handed us chopsticks and said "learn" lol. I miss those days.

I agree on the toy store. American toy stores are just "Meh". Japanese toy stores are like "Wow". Not only the layout are attractive but also the toys are more interesting to play with. They put more effort and quality into them including the packaging graphics. My only complain in Japan toy stores is walking aisle is very narrow. Not wheelchair/stroller friendly either.

I have no idea whether that’s accurate, but to me, it seems like walking one night through Tokyo is saver than spending a night at home in many major cities in the US.

I hope to take a trip to Japan within the next year, but I’m having a hard time narrowing down what interests me most. It’s overwhelming, and I’m not sure how far out I can plan and reserve accommodations, travel and the like. Great video listing your favorites Chris, lots of great reasons to visit Japan!💛👍🏾

I was initially able to book rooms about 4 months in advance, but I made some changes a couple of weeks to a day before I arrived. Prices were higher on shorter notice, and I lost a bit for short notice cancellations, but there was plenty of flexibility. I was also able to book some attractions the day before (not Disney) and bullet train tickets the same day.

Japan is the perfect jetlag city. There is a flight from SFO that leaves at 11am and arrives at 3pm the next day. The entire flight is during my waking hours and when you land it's after 3pm so you can check into the hotel. Grab dinner and then go to bed. The next morning no jetlag. Then after a few days go to another Asian destination with no jetlag.

One question about visiting an onsen as a day trip or overnight trip from Tokyo…would you have any recommendations on a particular onsen? Should we stay overnight to get the full experience or is a day trip good enough for our ten day trip? Thanks, again, Chris! Love binge watching all your Japan videos! 😊

You should definitely stay overnight at an Onsen hotel for the full experience. Make sure to book a rate that includes dinner and breakfast

Hi, Chris! Another question from me about when a good time to visit Japan would be. I'm wondering, would you recommend a 10 day trip in March or a longer three week trip in June? Is it too hot and humid to be in Japan in June? We're constrained by the school calendar and would love to hear your advice. Thanks, again!!

I'd do 10 days in March.. it is really hot and humid in the summer in most of Japan. I think the exception would be if you're visiting the North of Japan in June. Like Hokkaido.. or higher elevations like Nagano

Hello, I have a question about traveling in Japan. How hard is it to travel around Japan with a children/toddler? Is it difficult to find a place to eat that are child friendly? I'm also curious at what age can children ride the trains for free? I have been to Japan before I have kids and I can remember all the walking and exploring I did. I just have the impression that there are lots of places that are difficult to go if you have a children with you, like small shops, small restaurants or exploring the city in general because of the walking around.
