There's actually a name for the (ir)rational fear of black holes: Melanoheliophobia. Well, it IS true; Black holes make both amazing engines, and amazing power sources. The interesting thing about black holes is because they evaporate over time, the smaller the black hole, the shorter their lifespan, but the more energy they put out. So if you create an artificial singularity designed to last about 100-1000 years, you'll have a decent power source with an output similar to an antimatter reactor (the other common star trek power source) And you can actually control the rate at which the black hole decays by feeding on more matter... So how big is a black hole with a lifespan like this? Oh, not that big. It's got an atomic scale and a mass of a few thousand tonnes... Perfect for use by a starship. (incidentally, the mass of the earth compressed into a black hole is about the size of a small marble.)

@Viktor Samoja Outstanding point. With more research myself, I've found I must reconsider. With micro-black holes, they are excellent energy storage and conversion devices, literally the best in the universe! Just consider: a black hole with a horizon diameter of one mm has the mass of our moon! And far smaller black holes would still destroy the Earth.
@d.dementedengineerc99isurf26
@d.dementedengineerc99isurf26 4 жыл бұрын
@Viktor Samoja Yes. The laws of physics forbid any black hole with a mass less than 2.5 solar masses to form from gravitational collapse. From there down to what we call micro-black holes, there is currently a vast chasm where black-hole formation is impossible, thanks to the Strong Force. With advances in technology and magnitudes of increase in available energy, centuries from now, that gap can be reduced. And that very gap is where the Earth-destroying black holes lie...

"luminous beings are we, not this crude matter..." Life, physical or otherwise, creates, sustains, and grows the force. Life is light AND matter, and a black hole traps and supplants both, creating a void in the force. Disrupts the flow... I can see how that'd be terrifying to a force sensitive being. I think it's interesting to think of a black hole that way in SW lore as one of the ultimate devourers of life, and therefore the Force as well. But I think we can maybe think of black holes similarly in real life too, from a sorta "spiritual" perspective. Although all living things generally fear death and maybe intelligent and self-aware life like us humans especially, ultimately, death is arguably a natural part of the cycle of life in the universe. Because even if we die, at least the atoms and chemical compounds that make up our minds and bodies tend to get recycled back into the world, to feed new life. But interstellar level phenomena, and maybe especially black holes are different. If you were consumed by a black hole IRL, that'd be it, no corpse, no trace of your physical existence left, and no meaningful recycling of materials back into the universe. IIRC, although some radiation from black holes like Hawking Radiation might correlate directly to the consumption of matter in a sorta input-output sense, that radiation would be like unintelligible babble, barely correlatable to what went in the hole except as something like a burp by the black hole. (And in b4 being flamed), but this also reminds me of Luke's first lesson to Rey about the Force in TLJ: life and death are linked together, with natural decay feeding birth and rebirth, and so the Force will continue. But I remember now that when I first saw Rey's Dark Side Cave in TLJ, I was kinda creeped out on a fundamental level, like it reminded me of a black hole, but somehow ringed with or even formed from natural matter. I wonder if some fear of interstellar phenomena, especially those that transcend our notions of creation and destruction, are what underlie cosmic horror too

It dosent matter how fast your tech is, once you cross the event horizon you can’t escape. It’s not the fact that the escape velocity inside the event horizon, it’s the fact that space itself no matter what direction bends towards the singularity. Space inside a black hole acts as time. Even if you could travel at the speed of infinity, all that would do is take you to the singularity instantly. All the technology in the world can’t stop the fact that literally every direction N,S,E or West is pointing to the center. Your only hope at that point is that the center could be a worm hole and not a singularity and you can survive

What's worse is what actually happens to anything you watch fall through the event horizon. Here, I'll explain how fucking eerie it actually is by describing what you would see if you watched a friend fall into one. First, let's assume it's a supermassive one so the tidal forces don't turn you into a thin stream of superheated plasma before you ever enter the damn thing. Anyway, when your friend hits that point of no return, you don't actually see him enter. Instead, he seems to just freeze in time right at the edge. You never actually watch your friend go into the black hole. Instead, you watch his last light slowly redshift into oblivion as that final image just fades into nothing. It would look like he was just.. erased slowly.

And when the black holes lights finally go dark. When, with a last defiant bright flare that would have out-shone even the brightest stars (that died so long ago nothing would even remember them) they fade into nothingness, and time will effectively die with them. having achieved perfect entropy even the passing of time will no longer have any effect on the universe, it will be dark and cold forever.

@@TheOneShotWunda the SW universe has stagnated, technologically speaking. They are obviously capable of building miraculous structures like dyson spheres or matrioshka brains but instead they stick to starships and weapons and stuff like that. Meanwhile, IRL humans are making leaps and bounds in tech, not only for the purposes of war. In that sense, we are more "advanced" or at least more forward-looking rather than stagnant. Think about it. Consider the SW universe's technology; the only truly outlandish thing we've seen is hyperdrive capability, which is necessary if you want to talk about galaxy-spanning events. Everything else, even blasters, lightsabers, and giant spaceships are firmly within the grasp of our understanding, if not our ability to reproduce. Our modern-day "droids" are getting smarter by the day, and will soon be comparable to SW droids' intelligence. We can reproduce a plasma bolt/lightsaber blade, it just takes a factory-sized machine to do so. We, as a fledgling civilization, have at least primitive versions of everything a galaxy-spanning civilization has... Doesn't that seem imbalanced? A bit odd? Shouldn't a SW-level civ have achieved many things beyond the scope of our imaginations? This is why I agree with justin thompson, in some ways we really are further ahead.

What the Schwarzchild radius is, is the theoretical radius needed to compress matter to a density where it would become a black hole with the equation r=2(GM/c^2) where G is the universal gravitational constant, M is mass, and c is the speed of light. To give you an idea, the Schwarzchild radius of the Earth is 8mm. Coincidentally, the Schwarzchild radius is also the radius of the event horizon from the centre of gravity.

If our sun was magically replaced with a black hole of the same mass, our solar system would be a lot darker, but it would largely stay the same. But seeing a black hole with the naked eye, that would be unsettling as hell. You'd be looking through a three-dimensional hole in the fabric of spacetime.

Pellaeon needs a title, not of the Grand Admiral sort, but of the Pellaeon "the Great" or "the Magnificent" sort

There seams to be a healthy few videos titled "why the Jedi feared X" but no-one ever posts the 2nd and 3rd parts "why Jedi are angry at black holes" and "why Jedi hate black holes"

Its actually seems. I have no real reason to correct you but I'm running out of videos to watch and it's 3am but for some strange reason I don't want to to sleep yet.

5:36 you can hear Eck's phone go off. an interesting video because when I watch star wars, I never think of black holes. thinking about it though, it would have been an interesting clone wars episode or something, having anakin and/or asohka having to outrun or contain a black hole

Imagine someone making starships with quasar drives in Star Wars.

Just imagine if the star wars galaxy was doomed and they had to evacuate using drives like this... *C'mon master Jedi, it's just a starship* No. *What are you gonna do then? Stay here and face the Yuuzhan Vong alone?* Better than going aboard that thing *It's not gonna hurt you, it's gonna take us somewhere safe* No. *Why don't you like it? What's wrong with it?* I don't like it *Yea but why?* It sucks *Well yes, that's why it works in the 1st place* And it's dead *Well thank god for that, wouldn't want our engine to have a mind of its own, right?* Why don't we just use animal ship? *Hyperspace doesn't work out there, and no other engine possible could ever get a ship that can carry the population of the entire galaxy (which in SWs case isn't really that much tbh) up to a relatevistic speed* No.

@@d.thieud.1056 You might want to just leave that jedi behind. It's not like new force sensitives won't be born in the future.

@@mill2712 new science expriment idea: Find slightly force sensitive (but not enough to become jedi) volunteers (lets not be evil) and get them to live and have children near a black hole. The time dilation effect of black holes would be useful for this as it would speed up the experiment to the bigger the black hole, the better. then see if this has an effect on the force sensitivity of the children and children's children. maybe black holes slowly reduce force sensitivity? probably a difficult experiment to do though. Though iirc there are some non-sapient force sensitive animals, so maybe it would be m,ore humane to do this on them.
