Remember "John Carter," the ambitious sci-fi odyssey about a Civil War veteran who gets whisked away to Mars? If you don't, you're not alone - far fewer people went to see it than Disney had hoped, and we think we finally know why.

Filmento on KZfaq goes in depth as to why it didn't do so well and how they could have made it better (one criticism is that our protagonist never leads the story but is dragged from place to place as the plot needs or something). Personally, I went in leaving my brain at the door and had a good enough time with it. Taylor Kitsch was also good for a relative newbie. Liked him in Battleship too

I loved this movie and the actors were perfect. I get so aggravated when a movie doesn't make all the millions they want and they blame the actors. There are many reasons a movie doesn't make money. The price of a movie ticket is outrageous. The average person can't afford to go see a movie let alone families that have low income. So maybe theaters and movie makers should think about this. Taylor Kitsch is a very talented actor!!!

There's also a the lack of marketing that explains it's based on a book that inspired 100 years of science fiction.

Star Wars had unknown actors in the lead, with the two big names of the time (Sir Alec Guiness and Peter Cushing) playing supporting roles, and that worked. So I don't think you can blame lack of star power as one of the reasons for it bombing.

the lead characters were not that well known and i was a general sci-fi fan even back then and i never heard of them... it was lack of star power since i was as casual movie viewer as you could get and i had zero idea what the movie even was about..

Another problem with the director was that he was used to directing animated movies (Pixar) and was unprepared for the differences in live-action directing. This caused the movie to experience several delays, reshoots, long days, needing multuple takes, massive re-edits, etc during the filming and editing processes, which caused the already large budget to balloon even higher, and the end of the productuon to be severely rushed.

As an avid sci-fi reader, I really enjoyed _John Carter_ as both an adaption and for its own merits. Even my father - who flagrantly hates the sci-fi genre as a whole; up to and including _Star Wars_ - absolutely loved the film and still quotes lines from it to this day.

I’m glad most people, virtually everyone, agreed the movie was not an “ok” movie as described. But it’s a great movie. I also loved it when I watched it. There are some underlying issues that we still do not know about the movie that rendered it not being successful. Which leaves room for speculation. Movie was awesome! Cast were great. 👌

I really liked this movie. I believe one of the biggest reasons it didn't work was because the books are called John Carter from Mars. The movie was just called John Carter. Disney changed it because a movie called Mars Needs Mom's flopped so Disney dropped the 'Mars" from the original book leaving NOBODY to know what the hell John Carter was. 🤨

I've been aware of the series for decades. Right off the top, the marketing was ABYSMAL. The title of the film is so utterly, FORGETTABLY generic... Instead of "JOHN CARTER", it should have been "JOHN CARTER OF MARS"-- or, the actual name of the novel: "A PRINCESS OF MARS". And the movie posters should have had Carter holding a sword and standing next to a HALF-NAKED GIRL, painted either by Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo. The actual poster used, combined with its title, gave NO HINT as to what the hell the movie was! In addition, I've heard stories that 2 different departments inside Disney were involved in a hateful feud... and this resulted in one department deliberately SABOTAGING the marketing of the film on every level. When a company is TRYING to self-destruct... Incidentally, there had been a relatively cheap direct-to video version of the identical story named "A PRINCESS OF MARS" released only a few years earlier. I saw part of that, and it wasn't bad. Much earlier, Amicus Films in England had planned to do a version all the way back in 1977, as a follow-up to 2 other Edgar Rice Burroughs films they did that were both very successful: THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, and AT THE EARTH'S CORE, both with Doug McClure. For unknown reasons, at the last minute, their plans for thr 3rd film fell through, and, instead, they did a sequel to the first film-- THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT, which had Patrick Wayne and, in what was virtually a cameo, Doug McClure. That film had a lot of potential, but when I finally saw it, I wanted to KILL the screen-writer. In the words of one reviewer: "WORST rescue-mission, EVER."

I liked this movie & I'm glad they waited until special fx could do it justice. It might have helped had they added Edgar Rice Burroughs & On Mars to the title to get the attention of an audience. It isn't as well known a title as Tarzan is but there was an entire series devoted to adventures & characters on Mars (Barsoom)& it would make for good action scifi imo or possibly even given a steamr punk aesthetic since if was written in the early 20th century (around WW1)

1. They called it John Carter. Who is John Carter? Even if you read the books, you still might not recognize the name. This was based on "Princess of Mars" by Burroughs. If you'd called it that, you would have described the movie. 2. Burroughs' books had been popular decades before the movie, but not at the time. Even if you were a sci fi fan, you might not be familiar with them. Disney should have made a deal with the publisher/estate to have the books reprinted and promoted at the time, to tie them in. I was familiar with the books, but had never read them. So I went to see the film. It was fine. I don't need big name actors to make a film good. Witness Star Wars.

The CGI aliens. The problem with CGI is that not only does it need to look good, but you must also connect with or like what you see. Avatar is all about looks. The films are very average but lifted by the "WOW" of the CGI. Plus, nearly everything is CGI, almost to the point where live actors look out of place at times. With other films, CGI should be there to enhance what physical effects cannot do...well, that's how I see it. When You have a lot of CGI aliens, it's hard to connect with them, even more so if those aliens are family-friendly, and that's where I think the issue was. People did not care or feel towards them. Yes, it was good CGI at the time, but as soon as they turned up, I was not instantly bothered, and as the film went on, I could not care less if they lived lol. This makes me think that it would have flopped no matter who you put in the film. Some books just work better on paper. A good example of how some CGI can spoil a film is I Am Legend. Liked the film, but hate every single shot with the creatures in. As soon as I saw them, I thought, "Why use CGI, and poor CGI at that." If you look at the makeup effects Ridley Scott was going to use (before he dropped out) it was way better.

The people making it didn't know one Damn Thing about John Carter! I have no film experience and I could have made twice the Movie for Half the Budget! Did no one in charge even read the books? Why did no one Fire the director after the first week of Dailies? The B Movie with the horrible casting of Traci Lords was better than this Drek! Few things off the bat; the White Martians don't show up until the 3rd book and they have NO such advanced technology! The Bug ships are totally inaccurate to what Burroughs wrote! The costumes were atrocious! The Martians were basically nude in Burroughs work, now, we know that can't happen, but Conan style costumes would be okay. The Martians do NOT have tattoos, especially those grotesque facial ones! The Tharks are very poorly designed, and again, have very little resemblance to the illustrations in Burroughs work! This is not even half of the inaccuracies made. Again, did No One even glance at the book! Or even look at the various Comic Book adaptations if they were too lazy to read the book!
