Online machine translation is fast and free, but is it really useful? Let’s talk about some problems with machine translation. This video will focus on the Korean language translation machines Google Translate, Bing Translate, and Naver Translate (also known as Papago Translate). Let me know your opinions in the comments! So I speak 5 languages Greek(Native language) English(Proficient) French(Fluently) Japanese (Upper Intermediate) Korean(Intermediate) Also trying to learn Chinese and Swedish (I love learning languages) And in my native language and English, when I see translations by Google I want to bang my head on the wall Edit: I just came back after a while and I gotta say I am starting to become an advanced Korean learner yay!

I will never use online translation to say something to a native Korean speaker or someone who speaks it well, the most I'll use it for is attempting to understand what someone has said on a twitter post and even then I don't trust it fully.

Being a translator it's a pain when people think machine translation can actually substitute us. What people don't realize is that knowing a language doesn't mean that you just have to know the words. There are many things involved such as grammar and culture and that a machine can't replace. Also, language is constantly evolving. So, my point is and even coming from a professional point of view: machine translation is great, but only if you use it as a tool. (Btw! I think the reason Naver excludes the "그럼" part, is because it's more of an implicit expression, since it wouldn't make that much sense to write it and it's leaning towards writing speach~ ^^) Anyways! Love your videos!

I don’t use machine translations for whole sentences. I translate the words i need into korean and form my whole sentences and add 요 or ㅂ니다 to the verb as needed. Since i kinda know the basic korean sentence structure, if the right vocabulary, i should be fine

I do the same, but instead of translation i use Naver Dictionary in order to find the correct words / phrases.

Technically you're way better of than straight out machine translating, and it's also good to, as you're translating your sentences, to find more about that particular word, because it still might be applied to certain Honorifics, or maybe even proper particles, just to sound better.

One thing I found out is that google translate can’t handle the term “mic drop” ,when I translated it to Hebrew i got “decrease in mic “ and when I translated it to Turkish I got “ a drop of mic “ (like a drop of water)

Google translate sucks in general, but also keep in mind “mic drop” may not exist in other languages (this is why language barrier exists). Certain things don’t translate word for word.

Politeness level aside, I don't think google and naver translate are that bad. Politness level is quick to change if it gets it wrong. And if like me you know a decent number of words and some grammar, you can quickly figure out what's wrong. Also, you can reverse translate. If the reverse translation makes no sense, don't use it. If it does make sense, make sure you know what each word in the sentence means. I would never recommend someone who knows no korean use them, but it's a helpful tool if you don't rely on it too much. Honestly, google translate does Eng Kor much better than it handles most other languages.

@@bestrafung2754 But their (random langauge's name) to japanese translation is still very easily detectable that it being made by googel translate. Like as if you translate from english it always will keeps the "watashi wa" if the sentence has first person pronoun, not to mention that it always translates the "you" as "anata" (which not really recommended word usage outside of some specific contexts). And these are just the major clues that makes it recognizable.

At some point technology needs to take another step like have an option between a casual and polite translation.. Bcs it is very useful for us being a tourist to any places specially Korea which are strict with honorific .

Yes, this would be a good step forward. Although this alone won't fix all of the big problems (there are also honorifics to deal with and more), it would be a very important step toward improving online Korean translation.

Learn Korean with GO! Billy Korean Yes, I really do hope one day we get that. Bcs many are struggling and with this type of society we are in at the moment, they are quite hard/judgmental. Even with a slight mistake or misunderstanding with what we say towards a person, they could really take us in a very wrong way and it wasn't our intention at first.

Yeah, i guess mostly the problem is that english not really has formal and informal like as most of the languages so that why you not really can translate into formal/polite into lot of languages.

I am native Spanish speaker so when it comes to translate everything gets messed up haha. Since there are so many countries who speak Spanish, all of them speak pretty differently. A clear example is the word “coger” which it has a lot of meanings depending on the country you are on. Coger in Colombia means to literally grab something while in Mexico it means to f*ck, and Mexican Spanish it’s the most well known. Can you imagine a Colombian asking somebody to grab something for them but GT translated as “Can you please f*uck that for me”?! Yeah, it wouldn’t be that nice.

I'm a native spanish speaker as well, but I personally think GT is awesome at Eng > Spanish translation. Yes there might be some problems with dialects and stuff but the difference between dialects isn't all that great, I'm from Venezuela and I'd say our dialect is pretty close to Spain's and Mexico's Spanish when we are not using slang and maybe that's why I don't see the "messing up" as often. All things considered, using GT for Spanish won't create missunderstandings 99.9% so I recommend using it for language learning.

Well, as a native Spanish speaker myself as well, I find some bizarre translations English -> Spanish. The funniest I found was "stuffed animals" in an article about Natural History museums as "animales de peluche" instead of "animales disecados". GT is pretty good in some ways for formal and generic Spanish (and "take" is translate for "tomar" and not "coger"). But I don't trust on it for learning a language.

This is a good video. I am reminded of my first trip to Korea, which convinced me that I would be ahead of the game if I memorized a phrasebook. I have found a use for Naver, though. I write stories as an exercise with my Korean teacher. Sometimes I break my sentence down into simple units and use Naver translation. Then I back-translate - I take the Naver translation and retranslate into English. If necessary, I check the grammar. Then I assemble the parts into a whole sentence. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But I save time, and learn more grammar. When I finish part of a story, I read it to the teacher. That is where I found out what I should have written.

Bing is rubbish 😂😂😂 (Sorry to say that.....) I use both Google Translate and Naver as a tool in learning, especially when I am doing Korean writing assignment. Translating from Korean to other languages, Google is good at giving suggestions when there is typo and the guess is 90% correct, very intelligent! Naver's disadvantage is when there's a typo even though it's minor, translation failed. But, Naver has great explanation in details, i.e. letting us know the basic form of most vocabularies in the sentence. That's why I use both at the same time.

I’m studying Korean with a native korean teacher. And I oftenly use naver papago whenever I can’t get some vocabulary stuck in my head. My teacher often commend me and even said that most of my sentences were correct. Although, the problem with naver is that they have some lapses with the proper usage of some words and some grammatical structure seems inappropriate according to my teacher. Overall, naver papago seems trustworthy enough especially for beginners like me.

I did a lot of tests with Naver (Papago) before making this video, and I don't think it's as good as you might think. I only showed one example sentence in this video, but pretty much everything I tried translating in my research was wrong in some way - most of the time using the wrong politeness level. Most phrases translated incorrectly too. It's better than nothing, but it's not something any Korean learner should be using.

I'm studying korean and i must say that I absolute hate papago. Google sometimes do a better translation. But one of the good parts of papago is that they gave to you the meanings by word. So is usefull to see which word is which

All of this info stills applies today :) I keep checking and nothing major has changed with these three translators. Naver (Papago) added a button to make speech more polite, but it doesn't work very consistently.

I'm thinking of an option for these languages that have a politness level. Paste what you want to translate then select who you are talking to, someone you are close to, a stranger, an old person, an adult, etc.

A great example of this is going onto Wikipedia, find a page that has a Korean version, then look at that translated back into English. I went on the page for Esperanto and I got that the "language type" was "artificial fish"

Any time Korean translation is brought up I just remember fans who have translated "I'm so excited to see you" and celebrities laughing because the fans didn't know excited in Korean means something completely different lol

My native language is Spanish (though, it’s the Mexican version, NOT Spain!). As far as I know, google is alright at translating some things. If you were to be one speaking another language and used google translate to ask something, us Spanish speakers may take a few seconds to get what you’re saying. I only use google translate for Korean for really small phrases, not so much to speak to those who actually know Korean. Though, this video did a really good job as to why we shouldn’t use them! Helps a lot with my studies xx

I resonate so much with this video. For me, the hardest thing about learning Korean has been finding good translations. Even if they are correct translations, they don't capture nuances (ex. 아까 도서관에서 공부하더라고요 is translated by naver as "He was studying in the library earlier.", but in reality the -더라고요 ending means that you know he was studying in the library because you were there and saw it yourself) But if you have the right study resources, the process can be quite straightforward!

I have S Translator on my Samsung and so far it's the best one. It's still not perfect at all but this translator is so polite that it sometimes really annoying :D I use it for example when korean friends send me messages I dont understand. I just translate their texts and because I have the background informations I can get a feeling for the meaning (of the sentence or the word) from the result. I also use it to check my spelling and pronounciation because I can just say the word. If it does not understand my korean I try to fix my pronounciation :D it can also read the text out loud. I always use diccionario.reverso.net/espanol-italiano/ when studying Italian, because it provides the words in different contexts, but doesn't translate Korean. When using google translate I have to translate Italian to Spanish AND German/English (languages I do understand) in order to get the right meaning , so I pretty much never use it xD Do you know any online dictionaries for Korean which provide translated sentences for word context? Edit: apparently it does translate Korean , but only from/to French or Italian

I speak Spanish. For I decided to Google translate a song lyric. The lyric is "No importa que tenga castillos Menos que mate dragone". And Google translated it to " it doesn't matter if you have castles, less than mate dragons.😂😂 I see It as "It doesn't matter if you have castles or if you have slayed dragons"

Hey, this is unrelated to the video, but this is an accessible video, so why not? Anyway, I just got into the propositive mood in Korean and I am a bit confused. My textbook says that when translating, "Let's eat," using something like 먹습시다 would be incorrect, and you should use 식사합시다 instead. Is there a reason for this?

google translate for stuff like spanish/french is pretty good, but i think when you get into languages with complex politeness levels like korean, that's where it really messes up. i think its also a problem of community contributions, because im assuming most koreans wouldn't use google translate, whereas for instance a south american would be more likely to use it and contribute words to it.

I first realized how unuseful Google translate was when I was learning Latin in high school... Since then, I just utilized them for translating a singular word, then looking up that translated word in the Naver dictionary to learn it's other meanings and usages, THEN referred to resources then help further teach me about what contexts these words are often used in. One should never just used a machine translator. However, one thing I noticed with Naver is that if I added "sir" in the beginning or end, they typically gave me more formal sentences.

They are helpful if you understand enough of the language to manipulate it but in lyrics you will see 너 너는 내가 a lot. This did help me to take note of more things to look out for it is hard not to use the word you sometimes. Would you say that 당신님 is the most formal way to say you if you need to say you? Example you have an English gospel song and uses You repeatedly in reference to singing to the Lord and you want to translate exactly what the song says. Would you use 당신님 or would you change the structure of the lyrics? If you want google translate to say 안녕하세요 type in hello there, instead if just hello, just a trick ;)

V ery good video. I speak some languages and I'm studying others. I use Google translator in daily basis, also Yandex translator. They are good for simple words or sentences, but not for complex. I'm always correcting their translations, and both are the worst thing to use with Latin languages. No sentence is correct!

I use translator apps a lot (picked one that's better than Google Translate) and since the translations often miss context and therefore they sound strange, i just correct the translation i get. When i translate something to Korean for example, i change the politeness level depending on who i'll write but the rest is usually correct. :)

Learning French, Reverso has worked very well for me as it puts the words in context. For whole sentences though, I don't really know. I can speak Swedish too (fluently), but I'm completely illiterate, so I can't help out there. Take care of your body!

So my native language is Serbian and I am pretty fluent in English. I tried translating the sentences "Hi. I'm a huge fan of yours, and I'm looking forward to your next release. Take care!" into Serbian on Google Translate. It went pretty well until the "take care" part. It got translated to "Brini se" which means "be worried" lmao

I have found google translate (and naver) to be good for short sentences, as long as you know how to change from the informal forms to the formal :)

Translating from Korean to English on Twitter via Bing is always good for a laugh. Google usually at least gets the basic idea.

Can someone help me please? :( My Papago App works perfectly on my phone, but when I try to open it on my computer or on another phone my history and my favorites aren’t there! They are normally saved on my phone with my naver account… I don’t know what’s wrong Why can’t I access it with another device? How can I fix it?

Would it be alright to use any of those machine translators for vocabulary words such as phone, table, house, chair, water, sink etc?

Most of the time, yes. It should be fine for simple things if you're just curious. But a beginner won't know the times it's giving them a wrong answer and could learn incorrect things. A better option is an actual Korean dictionary, and/or asking a native Korean or a teacher.

It's the same problem like translating things from English into Czech 'cause in Czech you have two forms of speaking: formal and informal. I tried to translate the sentences "Hi. I'm a huge fan of yours, and I'm looking forward to your next release. Take care!" with a Google translator and it literally used the formal speech in the second sentence and the informal in the last one which is like stupid and messed up in so many ways. Plus it even translated release as an 'issue' XDD

In Spanish and French it has the same problem: It is because "Take care!" is for GT pretty informal and the rest of the phrase is translated as a formal speech. In French, it mess up "fan of yours" (GT take "yours" as a possesive of something you haven't said).

Some of us have not got the time or money to hire professional translators every single time we get curious about what's being said on, say, Daum or Naver. Nor do we all have the luxury of being in Korea or having anyone near us who speak it. That said, I'm studying Korean, & it's far from my first foreign language. Therefore I know how to use these services and what shortcomings they have. I totally agree, no one should use them to write a fan letter LOL especially someone w/little to no knowledge of the language! I get most annoyed about the total failure to even TRY to translate slang. I'll stick a sentence in from some Idol's Instagram ~sic~ & I get nothing. As if all those words aren't even there :( I have some books w/Korean slang (instantly outdated naturally) but it's a constant problem. BTW I've yet to find any language that Google etc doesn't translate in hysterical fashion. When bored I'll translate things back & forth from French to English to French - my own version of solitary Telephone (if you remember that fun little game LOL)

I’m bilingual somehow, English is my acquired language, i never really trusted google translate for sentences XD, maybe only for vocabulary. I mean, English is not that hard as Korean, but there were also a lot of inaccuracies when translating something in the literal way

I speak French and French-English or English-French is really good nowadays. I remember circa 2000-2001, my friend and I having the biggest laugh with a machine translator though. It was so bad. Each time you switched language it added another word so "pizza" became "pâté en croute de pâté en croute de pâte en croute de pizza". I still remember after 20 years!

Any automatic translation will be similar to these 3. There is none that works any better.

@@GoBillyKorean I only mentioned it because under the "How To Translate A Song" section it says, "Type the translated lyrics in the Lyric field ONLY translate songs to and from languages in which you're fluent DON'T use sites like Google Translate to translate entire songs Adhere to the official Genius transcription formatting standards when adding the translated lyrics." So while I don't know if it's fact checked by Genius, it seems like the only one that could be manually translated.

As for politeness levels, I believe Naver's Papago translator has been updated to give you the option of formal (존댓말) or informal (반말) translations. Though the functions aren't perfect, some aspects seem to improve over time.

I'm from Serbia and when I was younger I sometimes used google translate for my English homework. It was so messed up. I used it for translating from English to Serbian and from Serbian to English and non of that translated sentences sounded right. Serbian has a lot of gramar rules that other languages don't have and mechanic translator can't do anything with this complications until we make these kinds of programs better.

Most of the time, all they need is more data. For Spanish GT is pretty awesome because of the unbeliavable amount of people that've contributed to it, but I can't see the same happening with Serbian. Languages like Korean and Japanese will probably always struggle because they are heavily context-influenced. But for most languages, it's not the program's fault it's just that unless google kidnaps a translator, ties him up in a room, and force him to translate a couple million sentences, the translating just isn't gonna get a lot better no matter how much effort Google puts in

There aren't any accurate translators still. The best one by Naver (also called "Papago") still has the issues I show in this video. It's fine just to get an idea of things (especially for advanced learners), but it's not trustworthy.

I have tried this with Baidu Fanyi, the biggest translation service here in China. I translated these with both English and Chinese. 그람 다응에 또봐! -> English: of course. oh and. 그람 다응에 또봐! -> Chinese: 唉唷，再见！(Hey, See you again!) -------------------------------------------------------- Hi! I only use machine translation for words not for sentences & I mostly use NAVER dictionary bcz it even gives sample sentences 😊

embarrassingly made all of these mistakes writing fanletters. ouch. I'll definitely make sure to never make them again. Still having some difficulty with addressing someone as you in a polite form since 당신 is not really used and calling someone 씨 is also not correct ? If anyone knows an answer id be thankful to hear it :(

Thirsa Just dont use "you". Use their names. Saying any form of "you" to a stranger will seem like an insult especially when you already know their name.

Hi, my native language is Turkish. I can say that at the most part Google Translate makes a pretty good job. As long as the sentence is not long or too complicated. I also tried to translate "Hi. I'm a huge fan of yours, and I'm looking forward to your next release. Take care!" this and even tho it translated the last phrase correctly, messed up at the second sentence. It sounds like we are expecting for not a new album but a programme update.

If I need to use google translate for short sentences, what I do is try to use simple words that don't have too many alternate meanings, and once I translate it into Korean, I then take the Korean phrase and translate it back into English to see if I get approximately the same sentiment. If anything seems weird, then I try changing a word or two and try again. It doesn't really help with politeness level, but I usually admit I used a translator and apologize if anything is badly translated. XD

Papago = Naver translate. Its politeness level toggle is not very accurate. It does change some of the endings to be polite, but it's not reliable at making the full sentence polite.

Even when I translate from Portuguese to English, two Indo European languages with similar grammatical structures, there are problems. Machine translations never get it quite right, they mess up in vocabulary, verb tenses and genders, mostly.

From my experience machine translators have difficulty with the following languages: Korean Japanese Persian Arabic Cantonese Kazakh German I think a lot of it has to do with either the honorifics/ special phrases or unfamiliarity with these languages. I also noticed that languages such as Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese tend to have more support.

I’m a native Polish speaker and from experience I can tell you that Google Translate is pretty bad. For example: in Polish we conjugate words based on gender and Google Translate just assumes that we are talking about a male. (This is JUST an example)

Why i didn't watched it earlierㅋㅋㅋ. I basically learnt korean from Korean Unnie and then used google translateㅋㅋㅋ. I was so confused b/w 당신,너,그대...ㅋㅋㅋ...then papago naver!!! But i basically learnt korean gramatical patterns from Korean unnie and billy is great!!!!! 이게 100%사실 이네!

I've translated "If you speak another language besides korean, let me know how good or bad machine translation is for that language." in russian with google translate. And I'm really surprised that it has just a couple of grammar mistakes. But because of them, it sounds like "...let me know like good or bad machine translation...". Well, in russian every word changes depending on it's function in sentence, and if you put a word in a wrong form, you'll get the wrong meaning or just sound unnatural. And that is what happened. Though the sentence meaning is almost the same in whole. Good job, google, but you still can't beat a native speaker, hehe

I use naver dictionary...but only to find out what words mean then i try to fix them to a better form and also to change it to honorifics lol when I first was learning Korean I looked what sister meant and it said 동생 and I was like...oh that's sister...so I called my sister 동생 but it's wrong cause she's not younger than me we are infact twins and the same age so if in calling someone younger than me I could just say their name cause no one really says 야! 동생 lol do they? I dont think so

The biggest problem of the translation from korean to english or vice versa is, the "divide-and-conquer" doesn't work at all. In many cases, you should translate the whole sentence to another sentence. So koreans have difficulty to learn english, especially to speak english. We should think what we want to say in korean, and then translate it into english like google in the brain. So that's why writing english by korean is somewhat better than speaking english by korean. And that's me. :)

I've found that translating sentences/words from Japanese into Korean is very helpful. Most words and even some sentences translate directly and is generally pretty accurate.

My second language is Chinese, and machine translation is mostly accurate for Chinese. Some words don't exist in Chinese though

My native language is Ukrainian, and when I translated the same sentence as you it was a problem with politeness and the "take care" frase was unconjugated. In addition the word release was in its English form instead of a native Ukrainian one

Does 또 in 그럼 다음에 또 봐 mean that seeing us again has a negative connotation? I wrote down in my notes from one of the lessons that 또 means again with a negative connotation and that 다시 is a more neutral “one more time.”

My brother told me about it when i started to study Korean, so i reeeeally try to avoid it. I use Naver mostly to see some pronunciations nuances, even though i know that is no COMPLEATLY accurate, and to check some words alone. JUST NOW I did a test, i typed there "나 혼자 있어서 무서워" and Naver simply IGNORED the "-서" and translated like " I'm alone. I'm scared" and I think that should be something like "I'm alone so i'm scared", "I'm alone and scared", "I'm scared because i'm alone" idk, something like this. Well, at least i'm learning.

Papago seems to work the best for me going from 한극어 to English as long as the sentences are complete. It falls over pretty miserably translating texts with slang and incomplete sentences. I'm afraid to risk it for translating English to Korean. But Google translate actually does pretty well both ways with Japanese. ???

One important thing to note are the language pairs you choose. Some languages that have similar syntax will translate better than others. (Dutch/English) etc.
