They propose that the Egyptian cosmic ouroboros (like that depicted on the Papyrus of Dama Heroub) explains why dragons like Leviathan were cross-culturally described with the titles “fleeing serpent,” and “twisting/coiled serpent.” These titles seem to correspond with the idea that the circular cosmic ocean was represented as an enormous circular serpent eternally "coiling" as it chases its own “fleeing” tail.

2 Esdras 6:49-52 You kept two living creatures in reserve; one you named Behemoth, and the second you named Leviathan. You separated them from each other, for the seventh part where the water was gathered couldn’t contain them. You gave Behemoth one part of the land that had been dried on the third day, where there are a thousand mountains so that he might live there. To Leviathan, however, you gave the watery seventh part. You kept them to be eaten by whomever you wish, and whenever you wish. 2 Baruch 29:3-4 3 And it shall come to pass when all is accomplished that was to come to pass in those parts, that the Messiah shall then begin to be revealed. 4 And Behemoth shall be revealed from his place and Leviathan shall ascend from the sea, those two great monsters which I created on the fifth day of creation, and shall have kept until that time; and then they shall be for food for all that are left. Psalm 73:14 LXX You strengthened the sea by your power: You broke the heads of the Leviathan in the water. You gave it as food to the Ethiopian peoples.

@Ben Stanhope Enoch 58:3-12 | R.Laurence Translation 3. Then holy Michael said to me, Why are you disturbed at this vision? 4. Hitherto has existed the day of mercy; and he has been merciful and longsuffering towards all who dwell upon the earth. 5. But when the time shall come, then shall the power, the punishment, and the judgment take place, which the Lord of spirits has prepared for those who prostrate themselves to the judgment of righteousness, for those who abjure that judgment, and for those who take his name in vain. 6. That day has been prepared for the elect as a day of covenant; and for sinners as a day of inquisition. 7. In that day shall be distributed for food two monsters; a female monster, whose name is Leviathan, dwelling in the depths of the sea, above the springs of waters; 8. And a male monster, whose name is Behemoth; which possesses, moving on his breast, the invisible wilderness. 9. His name was Dendayen in the east of the garden, where the elect and the righteous will dwell; where he received it from my ancestor, who was man, from Adam the first of men, whom the Lord of spirits made. 10. Then I asked of another angel to show me the power of those monsters, how they became separated, how they became separated on the same day, one being in the depths of the sea, and one in the dry desert. 11. And he said, You, son of man, are here desirous of understanding secret things. 12. And the angel of peace, who was with me, said, These two monsters are by the power of God prepared to become food, that the punishment of God may not be in vain.

Enoch 60 1. In the year five hundred, in the seventh month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the life of †Enoch†. In that Parable I saw how a mighty quaking made the heaven of heavens to quake, and the host of the Most High, and the angels, a thousand thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand, were disquieted with a great disquiet. 2. And the Head of Days sat on the throne of His glory, and the angels and the righteous stood around Him. 3. And a great trembling seized me, And fear took hold of me, And my loins gave way, And dissolved were my reins, And I fell upon my face. 4. And Michael sent another angel from among the holy ones and he raised me up, and when he had raised me up my spirit returned; for I had not been able to endure the look of this host, and the commotion and the quaking of the heaven. 5. And Michael said unto me: ‘Why art thou disquieted with such a vision? Until this day lasted the day of His mercy; and He hath been merciful and long-suffering towards those who dwell on the earth. 6. And when the day, and the power, and the punishment, and the judgement come, which the Lord of Spirits hath prepared for those who worship not the righteous law, and for those who deny the righteous judgement, and for those who take His name in vain- that day is prepared, for the elect a covenant, but for sinners an inquisition.’ 7. And on that day were two monsters parted, a female monster named Leviathan, to dwell in the abysses of the ocean over the fountains of the waters. 8. But the male is named Behemoth, who occupied with his breast a waste wilderness named †Dûidâin†, on the east of the garden where the elect and righteous dwell, where my grandfather was taken up, the seventh from Adam, the first man whom the Lord of Spirits created. 9. And I besought the other angel that he should show me the might of those monsters, how they were parted on one day and cast, the one into the abysses of the sea, and the other unto the dry land of the wilderness. 10. And he said to me: ‘Thou son of man, herein thou dost seek to know what is hidden.’ 11. And the other angel who went with me and showed me what was hidden told me what is first and last in the heaven in the height, and beneath the earth in the depth, and at the ends of the heaven, and on the foundation of the heaven. 12. And the chambers of the winds, and (how) the winds are divided, and how they are weighed, and how the portals of the winds are reckoned, each according to the power of the wind, and the power of the lights of the moon, and according to the power that is fitting: and the divisions of the stars according to their names, and how all the divisions are divided. 13. And the thunders according to the places where they fall, and all the divisions that are made among the lightnings that it may lighten, and their host that they may at once obey. 14. For the thunder has †places of rest† (which) are assigned (to it) while it is waiting for its peal; and the thunder and lightning are inseparable, and although not one and undivided, they both go together through the spirit and separate not. 15. For when the lightning lightens, the thunder utters its voice, and the spirit enforces a pause during the peal, and divides equally between them; for the treasury of their peals is like the sand, and each one of them as it peals is held in with a bridle, and turned back by the power of the spirit, and pushed forward according to the many quarters of the earth. 16. And the spirit of the sea is masculine and strong, and according to the might of his strength he draws it back with a rein, and in like manner it is driven forward and disperses amid all the mountains of the earth. 17. And the spirit of the hoar-frost is his own angel, and the spirit of the hail is a good angel. 18. And the spirit of the snow has forsaken (his chambers) on account of his strength- There is a special spirit therein, and that which ascends from it is like smoke, and its name is frost. 19. And the spirit of the mist is not united with them in their chambers, but it has a special chamber; for its course is †glorious† both in light and in darkness, and in winter and in summer, and in its chamber is an angel. 20. And the spirit of the dew has its dwelling at the ends of the heaven, and is connected with the chambers of the rain, and its course is in winter and summer: and its clouds and the clouds of the mist are connected, and the one gives to the other. 21. And when the spirit of the rain goes forth from its chamber, the angels come and open the chamber and lead it out, and when it is diffused over the whole earth it unites with the water on the earth. And whensoever it unites with the water on the earth... 22. For the waters are for those who dwell on the earth; for they are nourishment for the earth from the Most High who is in heaven: therefore there is a measure for the rain, and the angels take it in charge. 23. And these things I saw towards the Garden of the Righteous. 24. And the angel of peace who was with me said to me: ‘These two monsters, prepared conformably to the greatness of God, shall feed...25. When the punishment of the Lord of Spirits shall rest upon them, it shall rest in order that the punishment of the Lord of Spirits may not come, in vain, and it shall slay the children with their mothers and the children with their fathers. Afterwards the judgement shall take place according to His mercy and His patience.’

Have you considered the relationship between leviathan and the dragon that rises from the sea in revelation? I’m led to believe that there is a direct connection and relationship between the serpent in the garden and the dragon that rises from the sea as described in revelation. Furthermore I believe that the scripture is helping us to identify those former and future beasts when describing past victory over Leviathan.

The "waters" from which Leviathan arose from could simply symbolize the people. Leviathan is the ruler (spiritual and/or literal - ancient Satan, and prophetically the Antichrist system which Satan had long since built). I do not believe even for once that Leviathan is a dinosaur of sorts.

Mind your Hebrew, guys. Rashey leviathan (unfortunately) can mean several things. If we interpret Leviathan as a name (like Suzan or Johnny), then the possible meanings are: 1. heads of Leviathan; 2. THE heads of Leviathan (Leviathan's heads). If we interpret leviathan as a species (like elephant, snake, dog, monkey), then the possible meanings become: 1. leviathan heads (like elephant heads); 2. heads of a leviathan (suggesting that each specimen of this species possesses more than one head). You see that (disregarding context, focussing purely on grammar) there is only a chance of 1 in 4 that the text refers to a multiheaded creature. And that context is just as important as grammar. You can't truthfully translate without mastering both.

More on Job (Earth). Will the wild ox (Taurus in winter) be willing 'to serve you -can you bring him to the furrow? No! you cannot. Did you give wings to the peacocks or wings and feathers to the ostrichs: She (the ostrich=winter) scorneth the horse and his rider (the Sun). Did you give strength to the horse, and clothe his neck with thunder? You did not! Behold now (spring) behemoth (all cattle, collectively; plural of behemah) which I made with thee; he eateth grass as oxen. His strength is in his loins (the latter end of summer); his force is in his navel (the same being a mere pleonasm) of his belly. He moves his tail (at the end of summer, when cattle are fat) like a cedar (i.e., strongly). The mountains (summer months, where all the beasts play, bring him forth food. In the hot weather he frequents the shady trees, the covert of the reeds and fens, as cattle still do. See you, it is impossible to take him, for you can’t hook his nose! “ He trusteth that he can draw up Jordan (spring equinox) into his mouth!” a not impossible conclusion. The ox eateth grass like an ox. Note: Aries = the head and Pisces = the feet.

Even young earth creationists are partially starting to admit that Leviathan isn't a dinosaur. Lita Sanders, a YEC Biblical scholar, states: "It is important to understand that the psalm is written in the context of the pagan nations destroying the sanctuary of God, and the parallel is employed deliberately to rebuke these pagan nations. The technical term for this sort of parallel is ‘broken mythology’; the point is that the psalm and Isaiah are attributing things to God that were attributed to Baal. In effect, it’s saying, “Yahweh, not Baal, did these great things, so He is supremely powerful.” "How can Leviathan have a symbolic, poetic meaning in these passages, but represent a real creature in Job 41? It’s important to note that just because two passages use the same word, it doesn’t mean the word is representing the same thing. So perhaps the answer is to recognize that while Job’s Leviathan was a real aquatic creature, Leviathan in Psalms and Isaiah is something different altogether. So when Job talks about an animal that scorns fish hooks, it is referring to an actual fearsome, water-based creature. By contrast, when Isaiah and the Psalms talk about a multi-headed monster in the context of foreign nations and gods, it is probably talking about the false god, depicted as a sea monster." Lita Sanders, "Leviathan-real or symbolic?",Journal of Creation 27(3) 2013 pg. 57

Mr k. it's both a singularity and a plurality, remember that the old testament was translated to English from Hebrew. not from English to English. for example, when the bible mentions the behemoth in job chapter 40, the Hebrew word behemoth simply means biggest of beasts. however when the word "the" is placed in front of it, it means the biggest of the big beasts. so this is a specific type of large beasts within a group of large beasts. I know it is confusing. so in Isaiah ch27 it is referring to 3 different types of leviathan but the third one mentioned, the dragon that dwells in the sea is the leviathan mentioned in job ch 41. notice the emphasis on the word "the" that comes before the word leviathan. so the word leviathan refers to a group of groups of these marine reptiles and the leviathan is a type within that group.

Leviathan is just an alternate form and name of satan. Leviathan = The dragon/serpent with 7 heads, the description is similar to the 7 headed dragon/serpent which is described as satan in the book of revelation. Same goes for behemoth, it’s satan. If I am not wrong, satanists/occultists consider behemoth as the devil, there is even a satanist music band out there named behemoth. There is a video by this Asian guy with channel name BBC international, although he is wrong in many of the theological aspects of Bible but his video regarding the names of devil seem accurate to me. And the video provides biblical evidence for leviathan being devil.

The Indian nāga is very similar to the near eastern serpent/dragon, so there is probably a deeper connection here. On a related note, if you compare the story of Indra slaying the serpent Vrtra (Rig Veda 1.32) with the Genesis creation story, there are some striking features.

It's a concept called Chaoskampf which tenda to have a storm deity killing a serpentine creature that is usually associated with the sea (although not always) or the primeval chaos and then establishing a new cosmic order. Marduk slaying Tiamat, Yahweh slaying Leviathan, Baal slaying Lotan, Thor slaying Jormungandr, Zeus slaying Typhon, Susano slaying Yamato No Orochi, and Ra vs Apophis.

Leviathan was just the pre-monothiestic Herbrew version of the chaos dragon Yahweh would have been said to have slayed in the creation of the earth. It was a super common mythological trope in the region and pretty much every culture had their own variation of the myth with their God being the one doing the killing and creating. It's why he shows up in the book of revelation after creation is undone, to be slain again and used to create the new creation. Go figure that people who lived thousands of years ago and had no means of knowing anything about the actual origins of the earth; would get it wrong when making it up.

I agree that it is plausible Gen 1:21 is such an allusion since Leviathan in a similar context appears in the creation Psalm 104. Mark S. Smith's book produces texts from Mari, Aleppo and Ugarit that list Tehom as a chaoskampf deity name, so one need not even be dependent on the contested etymology of Tiamat to draw that polemical connection in Genesis 1.

It was to them likely the a river originally which is why the emphasis on its winding and coiling nature. It was also very common for "strange" terrestrial features to be associated with mythological events. Daniel 7 describes a 4 headed Leopard. Does that mean every usage of the word "Namer" is inherently about a 4 headed mythical creature? Leviathan is used symbolically of Satan just as the more generic Hebrew words for reptilian animals are (often translated Serpent and Dragon), and how Jesus in Matthew 13 represents Satan as a Bird. Job provides the only actual Zoological description of Leviathan, the context of that part of Job is all about Nature. The Earlier' chapters of Job are men not God speaking, what they say is in fact WRONG that is the entire point of the book. There is disagreement among Ugarit scholars on if Lotan is the same as Yam or a monster Yam uses, like Posiden contorting the Kraken. Psalm 74 is a Psalm of Asaph, who lived long before the Captivity.

"Leviathan serves the same literary function in biblical literature as the chaos dragon in the broader near East." So if this mythical creature is refeneced and defeated in the older Ugaritic passages, has a similar choas dragon in Egyptian and Babylonian myths, and obviously much later myths like the 12 Labors of Hercules, where the Hydra guards the underworld and is Hercules second labor. What makes Jobs retelling different? What makes Job "inspired scripture?" How is the OT simple not one version of many ancient near eastern myths?

Who said they were myths? Maybe it would be better understood that they are cultural memories and the Bible itself says that all these people’s were once one monolithic culture that was later divided by only language. It’s clear that there is a core history/culture/tradition/religion of all these ancient peoples. Similar creation stories, similar traditions, all cultures esensiall serve the divine with sacrifices on an altar in the same exact way. The details differ, the dirties differ, but the fundamentals are remarkably similar. The Bible speaks for itself and answers for itself. The Bible itself says that other people corrupted the true religion and way of life and became very confused about the original details.

Thirdly Lxrd...Consider that just as Angels tampered with Man's seed and other Animals (The Bible says All Creation corrupted itself...that includes animal)...Leviathans may have been tampred with causing them to have Multiple heads.... Could it be that these myths still derived from now-extinct marine reptiles? I mean, if the ocean is chaotic and full of vicious dragons, then the myth could've come from that. This is my biggest gripe with non-YECs. Sure, a lot of YECs are ignorant of these mythological creatures, but it makes more sense that these myths would be based on real animals than if they just invented some creature that still sounds a lot like an extinct animal. Even if you embrace the fact that the Bible is full of mythology (which I do), that doesn't mean it's wrong. Evolution or OEC aren't proven right by default. All the gods of mankind are distortions of real animals or humans. Even if the fire-breathing element and the seven heads were mythological, why couldn't it be based on real encounters with something like a Mosasaur?

Excellent video! I'm so sick of religious leaders ignoring the biblical text and absurdly claiming Leviathan was a crocodile! That said, I think you too easily discount the literal application. Yes, God slaying the heads of the dragon is symbolic of his dominion over the forces of chaos, but the Bible often uses symbols that are also literal. Additionally, the Serpent in Eden becomes a dragon in Revelation, and close study reveals that the Serpent was most likely a Seraphim (acting in the role of a throne guardian Cherubim), which are depicted as fiery serpentine entities. Additionally, take a look at his description in Job 41. This is not merely a symbol for chaos, but an actual entity that is apparently gargantuan in proportion: I cannot keep silent about his limbs, his power and his graceful form. Who can strip off his outer coat? Who can approach him with a bridle? Who can open his jaws, ringed by his fearsome teeth? His rows of scales are his pride, tightly sealed together. One scale is so near to another that no air can pass between them. They are joined to one another; they clasp and cannot be separated. His snorting flashes with light, and his eyes are like the rays of dawn. Firebrands stream from his mouth; fiery sparks shoot forth! Smoke billows from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames pour out of his mouth. Strength resides in his neck, and dismay leaps before him. The folds of his flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. His chest is as hard as a rock, as hard as a lower millstone!

However, culture can spread and change, interpretation can switch and interchange. Leviathan is a creation of God and surely cannot be only one. Heads can mean multiple individual organisms. Perhaps God created such a creature to prove his might. Killing many surely would be a feat as it is considered great and extremely hard to kill. Otherwise I liked the video it's a nice perspective and very interesting.

Except that the creature is very clearly described as a single individual in multiple texts _several times_ . What do you mean “surely it cannot be only one” says who? You? by what merit are you making such a claim? Are you suggesting Cod couldn’t create an organism with multiple heads? Provide evidence for your arguments next time. Culture can and does evolve overtime but in the same vermin certain concepts remain consistent

So it is official? The being that we know as "God" is Bael, who challenge the god of the sea to win the throne of El. And since he wons the world is Ba [e] ll.

While I have no issue with your theory that leviathan could be a representation for something else (I am guessing this is what your implication is by saying it is a mythological creature), I am forced to doubt your understanding of the passages. At about the mid-point of the vid, you state that the passage in Psalms 74 has God smiting leviathan was part of the act of creation, which is false no matter how you want to read the passage. You have to force that interpretation on it, which means your bias is strong enough that you will see what you want to see regardless of what it actually says. This, in turn, taints your ability to translate any of these passages accurately. You may want to revisit your analysis after you figure out how to disregard your strong bias. After watching the rest of the vid, I am forced to conclude your premise is tenuous at best. You have to insert some notable alterations to word meanings to make your reasoning work. Rather disappointing to find this was speculative at best. I was hoping to find an interesting, and enlightening analysis.

God conquered chaos in the first few passages of Genesis. Chaos is the first enemy that appears in the Bible and the last to be destroyed.

It's actually not forced at all of you know anything about the cultural context in which the Hebrew people lived in and shared common cultural tropes with. What is being forced is your own modern unrelated theological presuppositions.

Except plesiosaurs were so stiff-necked they couldn't "coil", and they had only one head.
