Why Locals Love Zippy’s (featuring Hawaii YouTubers)

Zippy’s is a local restaurant chain that offers a variety of local foods (my favorite is the Zip Pac), making it a great place for families and social gatherings. But to really understand why locals love Zippy’s, I reached out to some local content creators and asked them why they thought Hawaii loves Zippy’s. I received wonderful responses and wanted to share them with you.

Mainlander here. When I go to Hawaii to visit my wife's family, Zippy's is usually the 1st stop we make after leaving HNL. I get super excited for it every time.

I used to go to the Zippy’s in Waimalu shopping center on Oahu about twice a week when my wife and lived in pearl ridge. I love the saimin with slice of Teri beef, oxtail soup, fried saimin, and zip pac.

It was a ritual, Zippy’s after high school football games. Now, it’s the first stop after arriving at the airport when visiting home. Always went for the mahi mahi. And when it’s in season, the garlic miso chicken.

@@HelloFromHawaii I went school at Washington so I always saw it but never really went there to buy food or dine in until I started to work. I would go there to dine in after going out at night with friends or just to have dinner. Now I just get take out all the time from there! That one is my go to!

of course i love zippys, so much memories; eating there, and working there as a mgr. what really affected me was the local people talking about Zippys. i miss hawaii culture, the people and the familiarity that comes so easy and relateable. my favorite was the chili burrito after a late night whatever...but everything good!!!

I enjoyed watching this. Although I live in Tokyo, I grew up near Zippy’s and have lots of fond memories there. We’ll be visiting Hawaii this month to see family and of course, paying a visit (or two) to Zippy’s. Thanks for the awesome content.

Indeed. After watching this, I tried Zippy's for the first time. The menu was overwhelming 😆 Just got the ZipPack or something. Was good, but the chicken was undercooked. The manager apologized and refunded. Was impressed. Will try again the Deluxe version next time in Oahu.

I moved to the mainland in ‘86. EVERY trip back home (every 2yrs) starts with a stop at Zippy’s, and yeah sometimes I didn’t tell my folks I did this. Now with a family we still do this, in fact my kids (in their 20’s) look forward to this tradition! My go-to’s are Zip Pac and Korean Chicken plate.

Love Zippy’s . I used to live in Oahu in the mid 80s to mid 90s, Zippy’s was the go to spot.

Ai-ya... You missed Hazel from Taste of Haze. Yup, Zippy's since 1968 when our next door neighbor in Kalihi brought us for the first time to the Moiiliili branch right after a Hawaii Islanders baseball game! It was a WOW moment!

Sooo freaking Happy for U Brah for becoming a Zippy's ambassador. With everything that y'all have been going through, this couldn't have happen at a better time & to a batter person. Proud of u Brah. I never ate a Zippy's ever in my life because I'm vegan. To me, Down to Earth is like a Zippy's/Time's supermarket combo & how the locals here feel about Zippy's is the same way I feel about Down to Earth. I wish they had a Down to Earth Ambassadorship.

Everytime we go back to Oahu we go to Zippy's. Not a local (yet) but I love the Portuguese Bean Soup and the Korean Fried Chicken. I'm going to need to try that Zip Pack next time though.

Congrats on being a brand ambassador for Zippy’s! Favorite Zippys food based on mood: Loco Moco extra gravy, side piece chicken-regular day. Small won tun soup (no noodles) with extra green onion, French fries & zippys omelette-post night of drinking ;) And ZIP pac-when no can make up my mind lol. This was a great vlog idea!

I enjoyed watching this. It was great to see and hear locals speak about their Zippy's memories and favorite foods. I ate at Zippy's Koko Marina area in March. My friend and I had clam chowder. Just a snack. I had just arrived in Oahu to visit a friend. The clam chowder is very good. Thank you for another enjoyable video. Your videos always make me feel good. They are comfort food for the soul.

When I was a kid, my favorite Zippy's foods were their Breaded Beef Cutlet with brown gravy, Loco Moco or their Fried Chicken. Now that I'm old, Zippy's is still comfort food and I still go there regularly.

I left Hawaii in the late 80s. I was a lifeguard on the North Shore. At thar time I only remember a Zippys close to town. We would drive all the to town for plate lunch extra Mac salad! ONO!!👅

Being a local boy that grew up in Kapahulu, Zippy’s & Rainbow Drive in is just a couple of blocks from one another.. zip Pack & Surf Pack is my favorite as a late night grab & go.. the other is the Zippy’s Chili …I am missing Zippy’s as I am writing this comment.

As someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, but lives elsewhere, I have a hard time describing why Zippys is so special. It's just good diner food with a hawaiian flair. It also reminds me of my high school days because no matter what we did, or how crazy the night got, we would somehow end up at the Mililani Zippys. Every time we go back to the island, we gotta make at least 1 trip out there and I gotta get my Zip Pac! It was what I would get for field trips (along with the other bento spots) and the variety is too good!

Such a COOL video! Love all the local Hawaii vloggers and their love of Zippy's. I have so many fond memories of hanging out at Zippers after a late night with my bestie, dinner with my hubby when we were dating, and it was my yummy escape when I was grading papers in my teaching years.

The collaboration power in this video is as powerful as the nostalgic power of Zippy's. Like the final Avenger's movie (cue end music theme "Avenger's, assemble!"). I saw some familiar local KZfaqrs I'm a subscriber/fan of and now have met some new local KZfaqrs I'm curious about. Personally, I'm a fan of Zippy's fried chicken and saimin--and the ambiance. I miss the Zippy's dining area at Pearlridge mall where the Sears used to be. Super lovely video!

I have been WISHING for a video collaboration featuring so many of these Hawaii you tubers for so long! I haven't been on island in quite a few years but I still dream about Zippy's loco moco and chili 🤤. Thank you so much for making this video!

I'm so hungry for Zippys food after watching this vlog. Thanks Chris! As a fifth generation from Hawaii, I've eaten at Zippys alot. My favorites are their fried saimin noodles with a side of teriyaki, the one ton min, and chili. Sadly, I moved from Hawaii in 1998. Miss family, friends, and Zippys! Zippys used to do online ordering, and though it was expensive, we'd order food a few times a year. Cheaper than an airline ticket, right? Even ordered chocolate dobash cake once in awhile. So ono! It was very sad when they stopped that service. Maybe as a Zippy's Ambassador, you can push to restart online ordering. Those of us who love and miss Hawaii and Zippys would love it! Online ordering to the mainland? They have online ordering for pickup, which has been great. So much faster to just pick up your order.

Thanks for the reply. I should have specified online ordering with mainland delivery was available in the early 2000s. We were in Florida at the time, and we could designate purchase points to the Hawaii kids at Florida colleges when we ordered. It was a great program! I would definitely pick up if I were down the street, heck, I'd be there in person at least weekly, but I'm in Georgia. Nearest Zippys is in Las Vegas but that's pretty far away. COVID has prevented us from going home the last few years. Hopefully we can go soon! Much aloha!
