Why MagSafe Charges So Slow

MagSafe charging was introduced to iPhone 12 in 2020. The technology combined a QI wireless charging coil with a proprietary magnet array. Which allowed users to quickly attach their phone to a wireless charger without worrying about alignment issues. You may’ve noticed that while MagSafe is a little more convenient than a lighting cable, it takes longer to charge. And the reason has to do with the downsides to wireless charging technology.

It's about convenience vs efficiency. You also want to keep your phone's battery in the "sweet zone" of 30-75% as much of the time as possible. That means charging it a little bit several times per day, and that's where plonking it down on a magnetic device is a lot more convenient and casual, than having to deliberately mess around with a plug.

I did an experiment on my iPhone 12 mini in using the magsafe vs. Cabled charging. I’ve notice that my iphone does heat up when charged on magsafe and it’s slow. I constantly charge my phone infront of a electric fan to help with the cooling. It’s not advisable as well using (ex. Listening to music) the phone while it’s charging at a magsafe (I use the wired earphones FYI) in the end I’d stick to wired charging because it’s faster and allows the phone to rest while charging.

But wouldn’t that mean it’s causing more wear and tear on the battery? It sounds like the Apple MagSafe chargers decrease the speed of charge when the iPhone starts to get really hot to protect it. Also, just curious about that charging stand you mentioned... is it topheavy at all? Any concern it will fall over? It just looks like the iPhone is propped up pretty high and I didn’t know how solid and heavy the base itself is. It looks like if you tried to pull the iPhone off the stand would just try to come with the iPhone due to magnetism. Maybe the stand is heavier than I expect and it isn’t a problem though?

Exactly and it's not just only about charging. The whole USB-C ecosystem is just better. Want to connect a USB flash drive to your iPhone? Nope. On Android? Yep. I'm working in IT and just for these reasons I have to carry a 2nd Android phone to compensate for the lack of iPhone connectivity. I see a lot of comments saying the same thing here so I'll post some things that you all should know. The whole "don't charge your phone to 100%" argument does not apply to modern technology anymore. It used to matter when battery optimisation and capacity were still being worked on, but if you have a modern iPhone, say X or higher, you don't need to bother to frantically unplug your charger before the ticker hits 100%. Yes, it does technically slow the ageing process of your battery, but the ageing is already so slow, if you just used it normally you really would not be able to tell the difference. The results you wanna see won't matter because after 2-3 years, your battery health will go down regardless of how little you charge your phone. At any point, to see any noticeable results it will take so long a time that the chemicals inside your battery will degrade either way, thus reducing your capacity through nothing but nature. Till then, only using 80% of your battery everyday so you can charge up to 95% of your battery 3 years later isn't exactly worth it, nor does it make any lick of sense. Think about it this way, you hard limit yourself to use 80% of your battery, so that you can occasionally charge up to 95% a few years later? Why does it matter if you're just going to charge to 80% anyway? The difference between that 100% and 95% is so negligibly small that you will not even notice it by the time that number ticks down in your battery health indicator. Charge away, your phone is literally designed for it.

I use a 9w block with a female usb c to male usb a adapter so my phone barely gets warm while charging because its only getting 9w instead of the whole initial 15 so theres no time for it to heat up in the first place.

Yeah, Apple has to ditch lightning due to the EU ruling, which would be great for consumers if Apple goes with the USB C standard which has surpassed Lightning in both charging speed and data transfer bandwidth and provides an upgrade compatibility path to Thunderbolt and beyond. But if Apple follows the rumored “MagSafe Only” path and ditches the cables charging solution altogether on future phones, the slow down due to heat would keep it from being a viable “standard” replacement tech.

so in the future when they come up with something better than USBC it would have to be backwards compatible. I dont know why they should force people to only use one cable what next for example if i go to England or Europe or America or Australia all the power points are different. everyone has to use an adapter and US is different voltage. they dont seem to worry about this sort of thing so seems a bit hypocritical

I use MagSafe roughly 95% of the time. iPhone 14 Pro Max is still at 💯 battery 🔋 capacity. In the car it’s slow in my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander BUT it’s been convenient and because I charge when I can, I feel like a dead battery 🪫 really isn’t an issue with most modern smartphones, albeit, could be a challenge in a pinch. 🤷🏽‍♂️
