The other problem with meal prep is that even if you cook something different for each day of the week the food looses it's freshness and tastes less good. Some ingredients simply don't last more than 2 days.
@loryndabenson5840

That's true. I've put some of my preprpared meals in the freezer. This does help when you're on on a super strict diet (like fasting or body building competitions) don't have time to cook multiple times a week but wanna stay on track. The downside again woukd be not having access to a steamer or oven to reheat so that it taste good and textures are still nice. You'll have to opt for the microwave if you're on the go but atleast the food won't go bad before you can eat it if you put some of your meals in the freezer.

I’ve never understood why people meal prep the same meal for 5 days. I’ve been meal prepping for several years and the key is variety. Plan out 2-3 recipes every week. There you go. Variety
@ellalella1
@ellalella1 3 жыл бұрын
And to make it even better, prep things that can be combined with each other as well like a casserole and a sauce that is great with potatoes, rice and pasta so you can easily add further variety. Then have fresh vegetables ready that are either prepared or that you can prepare in a couple minutes.

I agree. It also helps to just prep ingredients if you don’t have a huge variety. Then, you can cook any meal you want to with pre-prepped ingredients. Still saves a lot of time and money, and you can keep your variety. I use the same veggies and meats to make omelets, fajitas, and salads, and I could make more if I needed more variety. Meal prep is NOT “making the same meal to eat for 4-6 days in a row” unless you WANT it to be.

Personally when I meal prepped I made 3 portions of two different meals and take Saturday off to eat what I REALLY wanted for dinner. So Sunday I'd prep & eat fresh, Eat meal A for 1/2 the days and meal B for the other ones! I ate the same thing for lunch & breakfast every day tho. I found it a lot more accessible than cooking 7 sperate dishes. I'd also mix & match by using beans as my grain/starch with one portion of meal A and rice a next portion for a bit of variety plus different sauces. Meal prepping as a highschool student was wild lol

Actually, the first version works for me for the very important reason that I put it in the freezer, not the fridge. I have enough containers to have 10 dinners and 6 decently sized lunches in storage at the same time. I decide in the morning what I want to eat, or if I want a meal-prep meal at all that day. It makes me cook more, and means I meal prep 1-2 times a month and cook the rest of the food on the days I want to. But always having food readily available, knowing I don't have to eat it today, tomorrow, or this week if I don't want to, has been super helpful. I haven't had take-out in three years because of this ...By myself ofc, I do eat take-out with friends :)

Additional tip I learned from my MIL: the cauliflower leaves make for a nice flash pickled side dish, if they are still fresh. Wash well, strip away any severely fibrous bits, and cut into thin slices. Sprinkle with salt and set aside. After 10 minutes, give a taste. Pour out the liquid that was drawn out by the salt, rinse if too salty. Then add sesame oil, a little rice or apple vinegar, and a pinch of sugar. Stir around for a delicious and crunchy side ❤️

I don’t really “meal prep” per se... But, whenever I’m making something from scratch that freezes well (such as curry or pasta sauce), I will make four portions instead of one. Eat one, put one in the fridge and two in the freezer! Then if I go through a week where I’m super motivated to cook I keep cooking multiple things each day and have a variety of meals in the freezer, so when I have a less motivated week or have less time to cook I have loads of different meals “prepped” in the freezer already, and I just have to cook the rice or pasta or whatever to go with them! 😊

Food distribution was not as advanced as today and did not allow for the same variety. Food distribution is also most advanced here in the US. Eating the same thing repeatedly does increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Risks elevate when the repeated dishes have limited variety of meats and vegetables combined with a heavy starch component (rice).

I tried a variation of this plan last week. GAME CHANGER!!! I've meal prepped for about 5 years, and I usually get bored of the food by the 3rd or 4th day. I loved being able to mix and match and have variety, and will be doing this in the future. Just amazing! Also, I found I didn't quite go through the cooked food fast enough, so I froze it, and thawed it out in a pot with some broth, blended it up and had soup!! So many options!! 🙂

That beginning meal prep is my favorite type of meal prep. Same thing every day. I don't know why everyone bashes it. I make something delicious on Sunday and I'm good for the week - I do this for breakfast and lunch. This way I can control portion size, grab and go, and allow for more flexiblity for dinner. I understand why this doesn't appeal to everyone but it works, can be delicious, and can be very helpful.

Or instead of having a mother sauce for the week, have various types of sauces prepped and refrigerated/frozen to go on a few base meals for the week. Maybe you've decided that this week is broccoli week so you put gochujang on your broccoli/carrot/tempeh/rice bowl on Monday, while reaching for your lemon tahini on Tuesday and your thai peanut on Wednesday. Even perishable sauces that need to be frozen are helpful, as sauces freeze well while also not taking up much space. You might need to invest in teeny tiny containers to freeze your single portions on sauce (if you don't like using plastic bags for them), but it's so helpful.

Vegan meat/cheese alternatives have way more fat than the real thing oftentimes and nuts (nut butters!), too. So it makes total sense, for me at least, to skip or reduce cooking oils. But I get that it makes recipes worse sometimes.

@chicka-boom7540 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shirumoon Yes, I sort of got disenchanted seeing a video where a woman said "if you want nonstick but you don't use oil, just use water in the pan!", And being raised Italian where we use tons of olive oil in everything, to sautee and roast etc, I almost got whiplash from my double take. Also yes, some recipes really just need oils. And from the vegans I've seen who skip out on oil for cooking, they totally avoid the fatty cheese replacements and stuff. It's like an irrational fear of fat, assumably some of them grew up when everyone was afraid of fat.
@chicka-boom7540

@@kaateeh that's understandable, I just sometimes see the person looks sickly, and they don't use any oil and they live on fruits and carbs. I think some people skip things like oil out of fear of being unhealthy but they also skip a lot of other things to a point where they're not properly nourished. And for me I prefer the recipe to have oil, so it's a personal opinion that I appreciate when chefs use oil in their cooking. But there's much conversation to be had about vegans who don't consume enough vitamins through their diet. That's not any new information :p

No1 should be shaming but I like the channels that provide the options for both oil and oil-free, catering to as many people as possible. I have been using less oil, not because fat is bad but because health-wise, I'd prefer to get the fat from whole food sources like nuts, seeds, coconut, avocado, etc than oil. But of course, nothing wrong with some oil here and there especially if your diet is not too fatty already. and if oil is what it takes for people to enjoy healthier options than they'd otherwise be having, then it's surely worth it.

I'm so confused about the idea that meal-prep apparently is seen as eating the same meal every day? I kind of meal prep, which means that when I cook I cook 4 or 6 portions instead of 1 or 2 (for just me, or me and my partner), let everything cool off, chuck it in a container in 1 or 2 portion-sizes and put it in the freezer. It works wonders for all kinds of pasta sauces, stews, or soups. And I have a bunch of pre-packaged naan, pita bread, and other stuff with an okay shelf life that I can just pull open the freezer, turn on the oven for the naan/pita/french bread, boil some rice/pasta/noodles and be done. I thik at the moment I have 6 different kinds of dinners in my freezer? I thought mealprep was supposed to be something like that, but then without the freezer part, that you just made two or three different things, ate it fresh one day and put it in the fridge for the other two days. Eating the same thing all week sounds horrible to me...

use the freezer! Make food, more than you need. Put it in meal containers in the freezer. Then you dont have to eat the same thing every day for a week, you can take it out a week later and eat it then.

My problem with meal prep is that I finish all of it by day 3 or 4. Every time I open the fridge theres a delicious pre-made meal...

Hello?? Like I am not bored of the food. I was raised on leftovers. I have zero problems eating something over and over again. The problem is I eat my meals for the week in 3 days because I am still hungry. I need advice on that. Healthy food is great. I like eating it. But it just isn't as filling as Carbs city. And then I binge on carbs because I just need to feel full.

@@birdiewolf3497 you need to build balanced plates for example 1/2 of the plate with veggies roasted or steamed with spices or raw 1/4 proteins like tofu beans tempeh seitan and 1/4 carbs like whole wheat pasta, beans pasta like chickpea pasta. A well add some snacks in your day like hummus with veggies, nut or seed butter with fruits, salad of fruit with soy yogurt and some granola. step up your protein intake by eating more of tempeh, whole wheat pasta rice etc. Take at least 20 min to eat by chewing 20 times per bites to achieve satiety. Eat breakfast between 6:00 to 11:00 , lunch 12:00 to 14:00, snack around 16:00 and dinner between 19:00 to 23:00. For breakfast eat porridge, granola with soy yogurt with fruit, scramble tofu with a whole wheat piece of bread and some roasted veggies etc

@@lily-zv2fb Yeah. I already try to balance my plate. I don't mean I didn't put a lot of carbs in my meal prep. I still ate carbs, just less than what I am used too which is literally a whole plate of rice, pasta, or some other carb and some little protein on the side. I try to pack on the protein, but it doesn't work. Like I would have to eat a lot of protein which isn't sustainable money wise. Same with snacking on fruit and nuts. I do this already. But I can't eat a bag of grapes a day. I can't eat a container of strawberries and blueberries a day. I can't eat a container of nuts a day. That is what it would take. I try all that, but at the end of the day I end up stuffing my face with potatoes, bread, rice, and pasta. And these things are easier on the wallet. That's my issue with eating healthy. The amount of food I would need to eat to get same kind of satiation is ridiculous. Idk. It is probably too late for me. I literally grew up on a carb heavy diet. Like all our food came down to rice and yam. It was different varieties of those two things.

I've been doing prep meals for years with my husband. Same food every day for months 😂. My secret is lack of love for eating food + hate cooking I cook with my husband meals for 2 weeks, put everything in the freezer and just enjoy not having to cook anything for the next 15 days. 😁
