• Why We Shouldn't Have ...
25 million birds are illegally killed in the Mediterranean each year. The majority are songbirds, such as chiffchaffs and nightingales. These migratory species spend spring and summer in European breeding grounds, then travel south for winter. One of the most popular “flyways” takes them over the Black Sea and Mediterranean - a route that's also incredibly dangerous. With millions of songbirds trapped by hunters in countries like Cyprus and Italy, their numbers are rapidly declining. Some end up in cages, but many are killed and eaten. Take a closer look at the hidden dangers in Mediterranean kitchens, and find out what’s being done to protect Europe’s songbirds.

I am an Egyptian naturalist, and it saddens me to witness the huge number of hunters that spread along the Mediterranean once the migration season starts. I talked to the hunters on many occasions trying to explain that the numbers of the birds are dwindling because of what they do, in addition to habitat destruction and climate change, but it seldom echoes. Hunting is unfortunately embedded in the culture of coastal dwellers.
@jestes7
@jestes7 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to here that. Are they hunting illegally and/or hunting illegal species? Here in the US, hunting is very controlled. In fact, it's part of wildlife conservation. Populations are monitored closely, and only certain species and a certain number of those species are allowed to be taken. It's sad to hear other countries are not the same.
@zuziiice8907
@zuziiice8907 2 жыл бұрын
@@jestes7 mainly because it's not the US.. people don't got as restricting rules and most likely won't be cracking down any time soon. Overall it's more a matter of we got too many people and the numbers of killing and demolishing is overwhelming the ecosystem and animal populations. Back in old days with little to no inventions things were messed up and there was a high death rate but it kept the human population under control and you rarely saw people over 20-30 but with how long we live now and having people who pop out 3+ kids the population will probably end up overtaking the world and soon will hit a starvation period where there will be no recovery cuz humans took too much. Won't see the reaction of recent actions now but give it time and we'll hit that wall where there is no food left.. might even see a rise in canibalism when the downhill spiral starts.

I love most songbirds and due to the fact I have tinnitus one overly loud songbird really gets to me , the Canadian Robin. When the Robin sings it causes me mental pain losses and also I cannot hear the other small songbirds . I used to have flocks of 75 each summer where I live and thankfully that number is down to about 25 new Robins that return the next spring. Very few Robins that enter the property I hold title to , survive. If certain people would ever try to make trouble for me over this I'd sue them for the fact that they allow the protected robins to come on my property. A couple hours out of the day is definitely worth the weeks peace and quiet I get. We all have to make hard decisions

Breaks my heart. European countries are equally responsible for environmental degradation as any other country as can be seen in this video. But the blame is always put on poorer developing countries in the name of Common But Differentiated Responsibility (CBDR). I hope the world rises above this blame game and takes up the collective responsibility of saving the planet. Edit: If you still think that my argument is flawed , then consider these questions- Since 2010 how many developed countries have contributed to Green Climate Fund? How many developed countries have owned up for their historical greenhouse gas emissions that continue to linger in the atmosphere? With increasing droughts in the Horn of Africa, strengthening tropical cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region etc , which part of the world is suffering due to lack of disaster management preparedness and climate change? If you can face this question dispassionately, you will realize that there is no time for politics or delays. Start cooperating . Stop polarizing.

OMG , I read about this torture in Smithsonian Mag with lime glue sticks hidden in the trees. This is terrible the birds have so many obstacles to overcome, without them eating bags crops we would be in trouble. The sticky glue is just sick barbaric, poor songbirds could not fill any person so it is just sick. A Freind & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, Most that hit the skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. The Raptor Trust(TRT) nurses them back to health. Bird Song Apps should be stopped as not being used for good, but for evil. Think people know this but like to brag how many are using their Apps. Thank you so much for making your video. To the BIRD GUARDS. THANK YOU!

The wide availability of bird song recording apps have made a huge difference in causing major disturbances in the behavior of migratory birds. It's a 21st century phenomenon, and that period has seen dramatic decreases in some bird species. One should not use these recordings indiscriminately. They often affect birds negatively if used anywhere anytime.

When I was on the Island of Menorca in the 70s, I saw my first platter of tiny songbirds, covered in gravy. When I asked how one even got the meat off the bones, the person popped one of the little birds in his mouth, and chewed it up, bones and all. I wondered about the famine they must have experienced in the past, that drove them to trap and eat these tiny beauties, and then to come to consider them a delicacy.

And I thought it was going to be the song birds that we’re going to survive our wrath. Guess I was dead wrong. Thank god I don’t live in Europe now. I’d try to be a silent menace to them. Even then, poaching happens where I am too and I can’t do anything because there’s a ton of forest and it’s only just me.

It's shocking. The first time I heard about this in France I couldn't believe my ears. Birds are glued for catching and also to stop them eating the precious fruit. I honestly don't know why we can not just stop eating animals. It's so easy and effective and no matter how you look at it, whether its a bird, a pig, a rabbit its all incredibly cruel and unnecessary. Honestly most of the time i just hate the human race.
