Parrots are the most heavily traded birds on the list of CITES species, with roughly the same number kept in captivity as can now be found in the wild. Despite international legislation, these brilliant and frequently endangered birds continue to be poached from their wild habitats.
Up to 90% will die en route to the pet store. What’s driving illegal sales of wild-caught parrots, and why might it be impossible to stop? We shine a light on the murky world of parrot trafficking.

I watch nearly all of your videos, but I can't watch animals in harm or how ignorant money wishing people can do such things, I'd love to give them the same medicine, or worse. So I won't watch this one either. The one where the people in Italy go after the singing birds nearly made me throw up and I had to really calm down. How dare these people do such atrocities to the animal world and nature... One solution, don't buy pets from stores or the internet, get them from trusted local people. They mustn't be pure breeds, those animals are mostly unhealthy and overbread.

@@rjung_ch Although I'm sure it's due to your purity of heart, everyone averting their gaze from the atrocities of the wildlife trade is exactly the reason it exists/grows stronger year after year. Also, you are very misplaced directing your anger at the people catching the wild animals. If you take a moment to do some research, you'll realize the vast majority of exotic wildlife is caught in/imported from very impoverished undeveloped nations. If you were in these people's shoes and had to choose between watching your children starve or catching/smuggling rare animals, you would see the world isn't so black and white. If you really care about making a difference, you'd direct your anger at the major wildlife importing companies and irresponsible retail sellers. You can also start/support groups targeting legislators to pass wildlife protection laws. If you're really passionate, you can donate/go volunteer in one of these 3rd world countries with an organization that builds up the local economy/infrastructure and gives the trappers another option to support their families. I guess the point I'm getting at is that for far too many people, vocalizing their disgust/indignation for the wildlife trade is enough to let them sleep at night believing themselves to be on the moral high-ground.. but nothing short of *action* and the masses *standing togther* against this trade, is actually going to do any good for the millions of animals being ripped from their homes to endure suffering as we speak 😕

Before taking in a parrot, remember: 1) Many species are endangered, or at least protected; make sure they are accompanied by the necessary certificates. 2) Before buying/adopting, research extensively about the care requirements and lifespan of the species you are interested in and plan well in advance; many parrot are NOT for most owners. 3) Never take in a wild born parrot; buying from a reputable breeder or adopt, and always learn as much as possible about the individual/s you are taking in. 4) As a rule, parrots are highly gregarious, and require constant social interactions; are you SURE you alone are enough of a flock for him/her? . These rules of course apply to any pet, but are ESPECIALLY important for parrots.

I have a green cheek conure. It’s been a great honor and blessing to have her in my life. But there will always be a part of me that feels guilty to have potentially contributed to this issue. Now to the best of my knowledge and based on the certificate I was given, my bird was captive breed locally (I live in Hawaii). Having her in my life has shown me just how intelligent these birds are and I totally agree that they belong in the wild and not captivity. The only ones that I would now ever consider making a new family member, are those who have been pets in other homes and are looking for somebody to adopt them. It breaks my heart and it’s not ok for these wild caught parrots to have to experience this. While my parrot can’t be released anymore, I still do my best to keep her happy. She gets plenty of her favorite treats (blue berries and rice to name a few) and loves head scratches and will actually bite me whenever I stop.

me too, have a rescue Conure from 2 previous owners, including a relative. Didn't want a bird, but had to get the bird out of its current situation I witnessed at relatives keep. They didnt understand the birds emotional needs although admittedly properly fed him, medically tended and offered a safe if not claustrophobic environ (still clipped his wings-wth); but surprise, he acted aggressive, bitey and too difficult for them to handle. The hard work is the time and attention to the birds needs, when they need it; training them, withstanding bites as they learn. Cleaning feeding etc are relatively easy even w fresh prep foods. I now believe parrots should NOT be pets unless rescues or have some other limiting condition. The amount of time energy care etc to respond to their needs reflective of their natural environ (they are social Wild animals) is nearly impossible for most any average person / pet owner. I barely have the capability now and a questionably safe apartment environ. The whole pet industry breaks my heart; I often really resent humans how they treat animals including other humans

Another problem with this is species that can become invasive. Imported as pets and intentionally released or escaped by themselves, some parrot species have become a major issue in non-native places by competing with native bird species for food and nesting sites. Justv as I was watching the video, the small flock of Monk Parakeets that lives near my house flew by the balcony. The problem is that I live in Italy, 9000 km away from their native Argentina.

I worked in the retail pet industry for a decade. Where I worked for the vast majority of that time, we sourced all of our birds from licensed breeders, and I know regular audits were conducted to ensure nothing untoward was going on. For all our parrots, we actually received them as fledglings and hand fed them on site for several weeks before weening, as well as giving them plenty of attention and play. And as one of the people certified to do the hand feeding, I can say the impact on their demeanour is massive. Ethically sourced birds are certainly considerably more expensive than their illegally procured counterparts, but you really get what you pay for. Not only are the captive-bred, hand-raised birds generally quite a bit healthier, but they're also just much, much better companions. Wild-caught birds are just that-wild. They might learn to tolerate humans, but they'll never form the same bonds that hand-raised birds do. There was absolutely no comparison between the personalities of the captive-bred, hand-raised birds from the place I worked for most of my time and the dubiously-sourced birds from the sketchy operation where I started, or the many other wild-caught birds I've encountered elsewhere over the years. At this point, I'm honestly pretty ambivalent about the ethics of keeping pets at all-any pets, even dogs. But if you're going to keep pets, it's undeniable that there's a right and a wrong way to source them. Fortunately, in the case of birds, the more ethical path is also better for the consumer. Yes, ethically-sourced birds are more expensive, but when you're buying an animal who'll be your companion for many decades to come, honestly, the price shouldn't be a huge consideration-factored over the lifetime of the bird, the savings from a dubiously-sourced bird becomes negligible. But the difference in the relationship is quite significant. Captive-bred, hand-raised birds are just plain better pets. And they can bond with their humans as much as any dog and display a great deal of affection. Honestly, I'd worry more about other parts of the exotic pet trade than parrots. Illegal reptile smuggling, for example, can cause all the same problems as birds, but the incentives are much less clear for the consumer. As I've said, with parrots, the ethical choice is also very clearly the better choice for the consumer, too. But with reptiles, that's not always the case, and many highly sought-after species are extremely difficult to breed in captivity, too. Animals like the Solomon Island skink have been seriously threatened by the exotic pet trade, and to be honest, for the consumer, it's pretty hard to tell the difference between an ethically-sourced reptile and an illegally smuggled one. So I'd argue it's more important to focus on the cases where the incentives are more badly aligned. In the case of parrots, consumer education can go a long way. As I said, I'm not sure we should be keeping any animals as pets. But if we are going to keep pets, I think it's hard to argue that ethically-sourced parrots aren't one of the better choices. They are quite demanding, and its important that people are well-informed about the commitment they're getting into and prepared to care for their bird responsibly. But a well cared for, captive-bred, hand-raised parrot will bond with its owner like few other pets. They're full of love and affection, and you'll be well-rewarded for giving them the attention they require. And their long lives are another thing prospective-owners must be educated about, but they can be another great advantage, and there are great species with lifespans ranging from 15-25 years (cockatiels) to upwards of 60-70 years for some of the larger species, so they're one of the few pets that can really be a lifelong companion.
@terramater
@terramater Жыл бұрын
It's important to check the background, if the bird was taken from nature, it will be almost impossible the cage adaptation and even a cruel because they aren't used to live in a cage. On the other hand, we also mention in the video that many people abandon the bird after a period of time, and as you said they are full of love and affection and need attention, so having a bird as a pet also demands a lot of commitment and people should really think about it before making a decision.
@SleinJinn
@SleinJinn Жыл бұрын
@@terramater I'd argue that issues around commitment, abandonment, and attention are *pet* issues, though, not *parrot* issues. You could make exactly the same point about dogs, cats, reptiles, even many fish. Pet owners getting in over their heads or simply losing interest is a real problem throughout the industry, and it's something that we worked really hard to counter where I worked, but there's no silver bullet. Education and responsible sales policies can help a lot, but as long as there's a pet industry, there are going to be cases where pets are neglected or mistreated. It's one of the reasons why, as I said, I'm not certain anyone should be keeping any animals as pets. But again, based on my considerable experience in the industry and talking to other industry professionals, I'd argue that parrots are not the biggest victims of these issues. Perhaps they suffer more acutely as victims than many other animals do in light of their high intelligence and sociability, but the relationship between intelligence and the capacity to suffer remains an open question. At any rate, my experience was that the overwhelming majority of people who considered purchasing a parrot did so precisely because of the demanding pet-owner relationship. In my position, I had considerable authority to push prospective owners away from potentially problematic animal purchases, or even to outright refuse sales if necessary, but this very seldom came up in the context of parrots-certainly not never, but very seldom. Where I most frequently had to get firm with prospective customers was with juvenile reptiles of larger species. Since they're not particularly intelligent or sociable, people generally keep reptiles for very different reasons than birds. And this tends to lead to much worse alignment between the interests of the owner and the interests of the animal. Couple that with the fact that, behaviourally, there's little to distinguish an ethically-sourced reptile from an illegally smuggled one, and the incentives in the reptile trade can be extremely problematic. Outside of work, I was also involved in an organisation that did reptile rehab, pest removal, etc., and you'd be surprised how often we had to deal with some abandoned Burmese python or the like. In sum, I absolutely agree with the video that it's critically important to take all due care in sourcing pets ethically, and many governments need to do a better job at limiting the trade in dubiously-sourced animals. But I have to strongly question the choice to single out parrots as the principle instance of this widespread issue-it's a pet industry problem, not a parrot problem. And I can't help but take issue with the video title. In singling out parrots, it is implicit in the title that *some* pets are okay. But the title explicitly suggests that *no* parrots are okay to keep, regardless of their source. Again, I'm quite open to the perspective that no one should be keeping pets at all, but if anyone should be keeping any animals as pets, I'd contend that responsible, well-prepared owners keeping ethically-sourced parrots is about as well as the pet industry can possibly do. I'd argue that the exotic reptile trade is a much clearer case study in the ethical issues around the pet industry. I'm less personally knowledgeable about the trade in reef fish, but I know the issues there are quite similar to the reptile trade, too.

@SleinJinn
@SleinJinn 2 ай бұрын
@@TheSevonne My point wasn't so much that the reptile trade is worse than the parrot trade; more just that singling out the parrot trade for special criticism rather than discussing the exotic pet trade as a whole is misguided. Most of the main points of this video are spot on and very important, but they're not unique to the parrot trade, and I feel strongly that the video seriously undermines its own case by not placing those points in the proper context. The contrast that needs to be drawn is between wild caught and captive bred animals. Drawing a contrast instead between parrots and other pets obfuscates the real issues. But the one big factor that can potentially make the exotic reptile trade more problematic than the parrot trade is the consumer incentives. As I described in the wall of text above, captive bred birds are frankly just a much better "product" than wild caught equivalents, and in my experience, it's readily possible to educate most customers to recognise that fact. You don't need to make an environmental ethics argument to steer people away from purchasing poached parrots. The ethics and the consumer incentives are generally well-aligned. (Note, however, that poaching unhatched eggs is a further complication here.) It's much harder to make the same case for reptiles. You really kind of have to rely on the environmental ethics argument. Unlike parrots, the pet owner is unlikely to be able to see much-if any-difference between a wild caught reptile and a captive bred one. (This is different with some of the "designer breeds" of leopard geckos and bearded dragons that have become increasingly popular in recent years, but that's a small niche in the overall trade.) Reptiles just lack the intelligence and sociability of parrots, so no matter how they were sourced, their attitudes are going to range from "indifferent" to "hostile" depending on how much time you invest in handling them. There is no affection or pet-owner bond even in the best case scenario, even with the (relatively) most intelligent reptile species like monitors (varanids). So to push prospective reptile owners from cheaper dubiously sourced animals to more expensive responsibly sourced animals, you need to either lie to them or to rely on environmental ethics arguments. Unfortunately, many consumers simply aren't moved by such ethical arguments. It's much easier when-as with parrots-you can make a compelling, good-faith case that it's in the consumer's interest to prefer the ethically sourced animal. I think the high price of parrots-even dubiously sourced ones-probably helps filter out at least some of the "unserious" prospective owners, too, and there may be something to be said for the subcultural associations of different kinds of pets as well (contrast your mental stereotypes of a parrot owner and a reptile owner...). But I'm less confident in making any concrete assertions along those lines. TL;DR the consumer incentives and ethical considerations are better aligned for birds than for reptiles.

It is important to remember that "captive" is not the same as "domestic". Domestic animals have been bred for hundreds or thousands of years to adapt to human conditions, such as being able to tolerate smaller spaces, eat foods with higher starch content, or preferring the company of humans. Captive animals come from wild stock that has zero adaptations for living with humans. The only bird in the parrot family that even comes close to "domestic" are Budgies, but only if purchased from a reputable breeder, rather than collected from truly wild stock in Australia. "Semi-domestic" budgies have been bred in captivity since the 1850s and are being bred into different breeds, similar to fancy pigeons. Every other parrot species, without exception, are wild animals that are not pets any more than an elephant or wolf can be a "pet".

This is especially sad because parrots are also the most rehomed pet in the world. Parrots are loud, destructive, messy, expensive (especially vet care if you get a wild caught one, it will have dieseases, parasites, and general health problems because of the stress), and they require a LOT of time and attention. They are like a 6 year old kid who never grows up, and they can become 80+ years old and WILL outlive you. Imagine getting a wild caught bird, transporting it around the globe with so many of them dying, only for the new owners to be overwhelmed because they didn't realize what they got into, so the bird gets rehomed multiple times and spends the rest of its life in a rescue. :(

If you view this and realise how many birds end up in shelters its even more baffling. Most parrots aren't great pets, they are destructive, get aggressive and anxious easily, especially since a lot of owners don't handle them properly. I have a love bird (agapornis) he was surrendered to the local bird shelter without a mate, there he picked up one and we got them both. At that place were multiple parrots and an abundance of dwarf parrots and parakeets. It was honestly sad to see, since they did what they could to give them a good home but there are just too much birds being sold and later surrendered because they don't live up to the owners expectations. The mate of my bird died after two years of being completely bald (we went to the vet a LOT, which didn't do anything) the one left is allowed to fly around the house at least 5 hours a day, he is very affectionate.

I have an unfortunately wild baby sun conure. I am his second home. His original owner was just about to sell him. I was a volunteer at the time in a wild animal center that suddenly had to take in a lot of birds like this for treatment. Amongs them there was a very very malneurished lil sun conure. Unlike the rest he didn't eat well and needed to be forse fed. This need for more work with him caused imprinting. Some of the injured went to zoos and a good chunk of babies went back to conservation centers where they can find foster parents. But this lil sun conure never got his chance. He was too imprinted. And he never got along with other sun conures when introduced in our local zoo. So now he lives with me. I have certification from the government that marks him as a contraband animal and a wild caught baby and it marks that in the instance I am not able to care for it he shall be returned under government care. (I asked about that and now he has godparents that I know and they are ready to step in if needed. They are like his 3rd favourite ppl).

And they rule the Balcan skies again. In the meantime atlas(the conure) is having a blast killing every cardboard he sees and flinging blueberries and strawberries everywhere. People owning parrots feel special. Everyone can own a cat or a dog, right? But I don't own a mundane kind of animal like that, I have an exotic pet. Never mind that a parrot would be much happier with its own kind in the wild. That's pure selfishness.
@KateeAngel
@KateeAngel Жыл бұрын
Yeah sure, dude, it is about feeling special, maybe for you. But some of us genuinely love birds more than mammals. And cats and dogs are the worst pets, much harder to care for than most smaller pets (mammals birds or reptiles). What can be more selfish than breeding animals for millennia to suit human needs? Also, you know if you actually happened to "free" a captive bred bird into the wild, it would likely die! The problem is with poaching and cruelty, and selling wild-caught birds, and on a larger scale with the fact that treating animals like property is normalised and often noone regulates how owners treat their own pets. But attacking all parrot owners is ignorant, especially considering that many own rescued birds and make their life better. Sometimes usual rescue is also unavailable, and you have to buy a bird to take it away from terrible conditions. Like in my country proper bird rescues are simply non-existent unfortunately!
@mikshinee87
@mikshinee87 Жыл бұрын
@@KateeAngel Thinking that your likes and dislikes matter more than a bird's happiness and freedom IS selfishness. The same selfishness that created zoos. What are you rescuing the parrots from? Irresponsible owners. Yes, that's right. Plucking their feathers until they can no longer fly. Being neglected after the owner dies because the son or daughter couldn't care less. Humanity has created this problem in the first place.
@KateeAngel
@KateeAngel Жыл бұрын
@@mikshinee87 yes, but people who rescue them don't make it worse, they actually help birds which already are in that situation. And speaking about selfishness, by your logic any decision of people involving other living beings including other people can be seen as selfish. Having bio-kids is more selfish, 100%, cause you are taking risk that their life will be terrible (this risk is never zero), for them, without possibility of them consenting to it. Also, by your logic we should die from diseases instead of testing medicines on animals or using those animals. Because extending your own life several decades by killing animals is "selfish".
@KateeAngel
@KateeAngel Жыл бұрын
Also average lifespan in the wild, say for example of budgies: 4 years, in the captivity 10 years. And that considering that they can be kept in flock in huge area, with "their own kind", and be given veterinary care, to rid them of disease and parasites, which they have in the wild. Saying all animals are happier in the wild, is like saying that all humans would be happier to live as wild hunter-gatherers, without modern medicine and food security. After all, look at us living in concrete "cages"! Horror! 😆

@@KateeAngel Most parrots are clearly better off living freely in the wild with their fellow kind. How'd you like to spend the rest of your life in a closet-sized cage with no fellow human beings to interact with? I'm sure there are some exceptions (e.g., parrots that are injured and would quickly die in the wild), but for the most part, parrots are likely happiest free and with their own kind.

I'm going to make a statement here that may upset some, but in watching all of the "moving parts" related to birds, and parrots particularly, several truths have emerged over time. First, the comparative level of sympathy, compassion, and concern for avians pales compared to that afforded to mammals. General affection and caring for the welfare of burds for is much, much lower than for mammals. Birds of all species suffer for being "non-mammals." Secondly, parrots were never selectively bred for behavioral traits the way dogs, cats, and horses were. This is also true for the unfortunate descendants of Gallus gallus, the ancestor species of "chickens," and there is similarly little or no compassion for selectively-bred duck, goose, and turkey breeds, either. The entirely self-serving argument that it's acceptable to breed any bird in captivity and force most to exist in tiny cages therefore flies in the face of evolutionary and behavioral reality. And yes, that includes breeds of duck or goose purposefully bred to be too heavy to fly. That was physiological selective breeding, not behavioral selective breeding. Their suffering is real. Avians are perhaps the most commodified classes of vertebrates, suffering enormously for simply being avian. Only at the and of the video is it mentioned that a high percentage of parrot purchased and kept, not including the much-suffering Budgerigar or Cockatiel, are relinquished within 2 years as impulse buyers belatedly wake up to the fact that avians are living beings and not toys. Parrots (and all birds) require care, proper food, exercise, fresh air and natural light, exploration and exercise opportunities, enrichment toys, intense socialization, and they are not naturally "quiet." The ones relinquished to rescues and sanctuaries are the lucky ones. Many people simply dump unwanted parrots at pet shops where the birds are simply resold, dumped, and resold, over and over. Other unlucky birds are sometimes merely dumped outside without another care about predation, starvation, or exposure. People throw the birds outside, informing them they are "free" now, too stupid to understand that isn't how reality operates for discarded pet birds. They were never free, and now are simply abandoned. Others are locked up in cages, sometimes given food and water, kept in dark, damp, dimly lit places in total isolation, and even subjected to physical abuse, mutilation, and torture. This sometimes goes on for decades. Why? The human keeping them as a prisoner is too stupid, lazy, or even malevolent to spend time looking for a suitable home and then letting the bird go to a better home. When we compare "pet" situations in a country like the USA, we find that shelter, sanctuary, and rescue resources are centered solely and only on mammals. To aid domesticated predators, predominantly, the public is taxed to provide those services by municipal acencies, even if the accommodations for those mammals is not always humane. There is no such parallel public system to assist abused, neglected, or relinquished pet birds. They are solely reliant upon charitable organizations and their operators, of which there are fewer, by many orders of magnitude, than dog and cat rescue. Against these variables and those mentioned in the documentary, the birds will likely become permanently displaced refugee populations, the way parrots living in a German city have (documented by Terra Mater). The one and only way to stop this is to ban parrot habitat destruction for any reason, globally ban possession of parrots and other wild birds, ban holding them in captivity, and mean it with inflicting harsh penalties on all human accomplices. Anything else will be too little, too late.

Birds should be free, and when we learn what is behind birds in captivity, it makes things even clearer that they shouldn't be living in cages.

@@terramater Agreed, hence my blunt synopsis of how captive "pet" birds really suffer.
