From an ambitious fighter jet project to a landmark missile test, the last few days marked important milestones for the nation’s defence. India test-launched the nuclear capable Agni-V missile in a ‘multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle’, or MIRV, avatar. Just days before, the government gave the all-clear for the development of the AMCA, or Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, a fifth-generation fighter jet that will feature cutting-edge technology.
On this episode of In Our Defence, host Dev Goswami and Defence expert Shiv Aroor discuss these two projects and what they mean for the Indian Air force and the country’s nuclear arsenal. The two also briefly discuss the unfortunate crash of the Tejas fighter jet, the first in its service history.

The biggest worry is despite building the prototype of Tejas in 2021 , why no prototype of Tejas Mark 2 has come up till now . HAL is used to making excuses like COVID , non sanctioning of funds by CCS , delay in receiving engines , ejecting seat , refueling drouges , delay in supply chain delays , No infrastructure to build more than 5/6 aircrafts etc etc . Do anyone is held accountable . The way they are building Tejas Mark 1A it will take at least 20 years . Defence Minister and PM must pull up HAL and someone held accountable .

This is a great podcast.....Good to see the Mr.Shiv communicating openly about the relationships between HAL & IAF and how its getting better. As you speak it clear explains that for MK1A to be operational , Moving to MK2 being operational then AMCA we see a clear gap of 10-20 years for these platforms to be fully operational. Do you not see that with a current squadron strength of 32 -33 , and current constant tussle with China & Pak (2 Front Scenario) India should go ahead for a gap fill with MMRCA ( or a similar sort of Govt to Govt Deal like Rafale) would love to hear opinions over it....!!

😎 What about the "learning curve" Indian industry has to go through. With Mirage fighter jet assembly line, our industry would have learned nothing. With Tejas our Industry has learned and sustained its operations till time. Our Defense Ministry and Chief of staff are very smart to select Tejas program for production! ✌

Thanks for explaining every core of the aspect. But one simple question..Why dont we hear F35 of F22 or for that matter F16 or F18 which are 75 years old platforms. Why only Indian pilots have to manipulate any Flying Coffin,Widow maker or its newest version(30 years old Lca) of imported foreign products assembled in India. Talking about AMCA It will be fully operational by the time the world would be talking about 10 generation aircraft.

In India, big companies won't take government R&D projects comprehensively because there is a no contractual committment made by either DRDO, MOD or HAL! For instance, L&T would be made to invest huge amount to develop the aircraft and if the either to these guy change their mind, all investments are wasted. Hence the private players won't get in unless there is super strong support from the government! However, opposition start crying Adani and Ambani if it happens, like in Rafale. On contrary, look at TATA-Boeing deal, Boeing assured the business potential and Tata invested the resources to chrun out the aircrafts on time!

It is high time India prioritizes resources to speed up AMCA by dropping TEDBF or de-prioritize it to follow-up AMCA as AMCA-Navy derivative. Possibly Navy can handle it's responsibilities with Rafale-M for the next decade or two. All the more reason to order more Rafales for AF and Navy (combine MRFA for both) and create Rafale production line in India. Having a substantial number of Rafale's, Tejas Mk1a and 2, Su30 UPG as 4th Gen wokhorses plus inducting Stealth UAVs (MALE and HALE) capable of delivering payload, built in numbers and additional advanced AWACS should give us enough deterrence to keep 5th gen platform threats at arms length and have stealth response options. This should give us time to develop, rollout and mature AMCA on priority basis. There should have been a joint AF + Navy long term planning in this regard, probably in the 2015s when J20s started showing up in numbers, but i see very little evidence this joint planning happened. Missing CDS role here. Also, Tejas Mk2 design is already frozen, but could ideally have been a test bed for fine tuning tech for AMCA... like validating DSI air intakes, Super cruise, advanced data link and AI enabled MMI... so that AMCA team can focus on perfecting stealth, but that does not seem to be the case. Lots of firsts in AMCA :(

@@lordzroger951 No evidence of ADA stopping work on TEDBF but not a lot to show either. Even if it is not consuming a lot of resources, still prioritizing also means communicating plans clearly to stake holders are clear what to expect. If stopped work means tell Navy so and not lead them along. I have not seen official announcements one way or another on TEDBF.

How come they have no used there missiles and drones not even one against Houthis who have directly attacked 5 commercial ships owned by Indian or sailing to Indian ports. This is the right opportunity to test their Bhramose and askash radars, NAVIC GPS and other weapons system in actual WAR conditions to test their accuracy and increase their demand in the world for the made in India weapons. I think Indian Navy chicken out. They are avoiding battle field like sea of ADAN strait. What is your view?*

If INSAS had defects how come military didn’t get with the private or public enterprise to produce a better rifle instead of this tamasha of importing AK 203 (or even assembling in UP) from Russia? This is so humiliating for a country aspiring to be global pole power.

Way too long podcast. Please improve quality of content. 1st 15mins diverted to LCA, ejections, etc. Tempest & FCAS are 6th gen concepts. 5th gen jet concept & AMCA was hardly discussed properly. Finally, MIRV & the nuclear weapon is not a simple dumb device just keeping in mind the process of nuclear fission/fusion like we read in school. There are geometrically calculated & placed conventional shaped-charges creating the pressure & temperature starting the nuclear process for desired yield. Because of such improvements, today's MIRVs have much higher yield & are much smaller than "little boy", "fat man". The hit accuracy has also improved a lot. There are safety & abort mechanisms also which will destroy mid-flight missile/vehicle but not go nuclear.

it will be total suicidal if trying to use it, here is why: The Himalayas rise to an elevation of 4,500 meters on the Chinese side. Atop these mountains, numerous long-range (4,000 km) early warning radars (AESA) are stationed, providing comprehensive coverage of every inch of India's territory. Any launch is promptly detected within the first 5 seconds, and its trajectory is calculated. If deemed hostile, anti-missiles are deployed to intercept it, ensuring its explosion before reaching the Himalayas. Simultaneously, China's hypersonic missiles, impervious to interception by current defense systems, swiftly reach major cities to the west within minutes.

Along the LAC, mirror deployments have been put in place to ward off China. In the Indian Ocean Rim, India and its allies will not only take the lead but also successfully obstruct China's maritime energy route. The nuclear triad has been accomplished in terms of the apocalyptic scenario. It can only get better and better. India can no longer be intimidated by China. Concerning the direct energy weapon (DEW), also, be at ease.
