Why MiSTer FPGA is the Future of Retrogaming, Original Hardware Can't Keep Up. In this video, I go over why I am a fan of the MiSTer FPGA project, as compared to its competition and other products on the market. I also try my best to go over the advantages and disadvantages and explain what demographic of people it will appeal to the most. I am by NO MEANS dismissing Software-Based emulation (as some people do), as I am obviously a big fan of it as well. Instead, I try to explain why the MiSTer nicely compliments software-based emulation.

Congratulations! You just released a MiSTer video on the same day as Digital Foundry with their 1+million subs and did a far better job of explaining whats in store for folks just getting into this. Excellent video. One thing I want to clarify though, that I also saw in your previous video, is that Freesync is *not* supported by MiSTer. Freesync requires the HDMI 2.1 standard and MiSTer's HDMI chip is 1.4. You are perhaps more likely to get the odd refresh rates to work on your display if it supports Freesync/Gsync, but it is by no means guaranteed. Even displays that don't support variable refresh will commonly work with MiSTer's native frequency and low lag modes. I have a benQ 120hz monitor from 2011 and it supports every odd refresh rate I've thrown at it, without Freesync. It really depends on the display, but fortunately it seems *most* modern displays work with the low latency and original frequency output options on MiSTer.
@TheElectricUnderground
@TheElectricUnderground 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! I hope I don t get too buried by the DF vid ha, but it is what it is. So the freesync point is a real headscratcher for me Because I assumed it would not be possible because of the HDMI stuff like you said. And yet when I plug it into my Gsync + freesync monitor, (with vsync=2) the bad boy clearly reads 57 (and 59 on neo geo) and plays the game silly smooth. That s not the freesync though? I m interested to know what is going on ha
@WalrusFPGA
@WalrusFPGA 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground nope, its not actually freesync youre seeing there, just the readout on your set confirming that it is actually running in the proper frequency. it is a cool feature that many freesync displays have. freesync itself is part of the 2.1 hdmi standard that communicates refresh rate changes on-the-fly from device to device. since the consoles/systems on MiSTer don't change frequency while they are running, the freesync is not even really useful in that situation. You are likely to have better compatibility with odd refresh rates on a freesync display though, so it is perhaps something to look for still when getting a display for MiSTer use.

well said and thanks for posting! ive had my mister since last january and agree, FPGA systems are the future of retro gaming. the power/versatility of the mister is undeniable. ive been emulating video games since the early 2000s, and immediately after playing on the mister noticed how consistent and responsive the game cores were. i play alot of those SMW rom hacks for the SNES and would be thrilled to one day see the mister being accepted in GDQs for speedrunning. like you said, the mister is a set of hardware that can be standardized, and i dont see why FPGA systems wouldnt be accepted as a console in the future. you also touched on this, but contrary to something like an emulator on a random PC with unknown parts, FPGA setups can be a specific version of a console core, combined with a set of pre-determined hardware, which could be checked by GDQ/speedrunning judges and perhaps a "tester" could be developed to verify the legitimacy of the console being FPGA'd

Well balanced Video with both sides of the story. I actually bought it for the Retro Computer Cores, like the Atari, Amiga, C64. Owning these old computers is getting harder to find and many of the chips, once they die, there isn't a replacement in some instances. I used to be the same way. I used to be "REAL HARDWARE OR NOTHING!" but then I realized quality emulation gets me 98% of the way there, plus these new solutions are far more convenient and practical. The ability to use whatever controller, no need for expensive RGB mods, and having 1 system hooked up is hard to beat. As time goes on, these alternatives to real hardware will ONLY GET BETTER.

Real hardware is still the best option IF you have the funds, the space, and the right video equipment - CRT, PVM, etc.. You can never beat owning the real thing, owning something that was built back in the day, used back in the day, and will never have latency issues, hardware and software compatibility issues, etc.. I own a MiSTer, it's fantastic. But it has it's issues, such as real controllers - getting there with SNAC, etc... but the 2600 core still doesn't have paddle support. Then there are CRT compatibility issues, some cores don't even display anything. Then there are computers, the BBC Micro for example, their keyboards are a joy to use - to get close on PC you need at least a decent mechanical keyboard, but you then have to remember where the BBC's keys were, same for ZX Spectrum. What I don't like about the MiSTer is the way it handles rom images. I mean, on PC/Pi/Phone etc.. all roms are a standard thing, but on MiSTer you have to do different things to the roms. MAME, for example, and the weird MRA thing.

@@mrkirk4944 the value of mister is awesome - $400 prebuilt box vs. the cost of (modded) original hardware plus, if you're interested in classic computers, you can run the original OS and whatnot think of it as an amiga replacement alone, value is still OK even then
@mrkirk4944
@mrkirk4944 3 жыл бұрын
@@ynotwalk7391 That initial cost is what might put a lot of people off. I have tried to get my old retro mates to buy one, but when you have a mortgage, kids, and a wife, then a Raspberry Pi 4 is their best option - and to be honest, my MiSTer running on my Sony Trinitron - VGA to Scart, and a Pi 4 running on the same CRT with Pi2Scart, there is almost little difference to the eye, both look almost identical - but with a Pi you have that awesome mature Retropie to make things simple to use. I also have 15k worth of real retro hardware (current going prices on ebay), most of this I purchased back in the 80s and still own, the 90s when retro was super cheap, and the last 5 years. While these can be a real pain to maintain, setup, and dealing with cables, there is no better feeling than booting the real thing - it's just something only those of us that lived in the 80s could describe. Lets take the Commodore 64, for example. On the MiSTer, the core is superb, scarily close to the real thing, and connected to my Sony it looks superb. But, my real breadbin 64 connected to my Commodore 1701 looks even better, and running a Pi1541 I don't need to deal with the awfully slow 1541 disk drive. To me, the MiSTer is a great machine to tinker with. It's great when you just want to switch on and have something so close to the real thing. But it isn't perfect, and the little niggles that it still has can be frustrating.

For now I stick with mostly original hardware or official re-releases of games, for a lot of the reasons you mention. For Genesis games, I wanna play the carts that I have, and I want to do it on my CRT. The dual output on the MiSTer really is tempting, but if companies keep re-releasing their old IPs on the Switch or PC, I have no problem getting those official releases. But the price on ebay of retrogames is beyond stupid at this point, so for Saturn games, I know I'll never be able to have a full collection of real games and they almost never see re-release, but thankfully you can just burn copies for it

At first I thought I needed to use runahead latency reduction. That was the first time I beat Tyson was with runahead latency at 2 frames, but then I scaled that back to 0 and I can still do it, but my human reactions have to be absolutely on point (it's me, not my setup). This is WITH V-Sync because I just hate tearing haha. or Freesync with my monitor set to 60.1hz (apparently the NES is slightly over 60hz? I think it's like 60.055 or something... anyways. Since I had a strong pc what I did was just use a 31 kHz crt pc monitor and use that with retroarch. Using crt switchres you can make it show 240p. Just change vsync swap chain interval to 2 if you do. It's great cause saturn works great, like having the real thing, except in a rgb pc case. AFAIK you'd need a line doubler for 240p on the mister for "real doublestrike". *edit* the mister does support this method becauss it handles arbitrary resolutions.

Most of the sellers of MiSTer setups will include an SD card with the directories and files (sans ROMs). To keep it up to date there is an update script. To get the correct arcade ROMs from archive.org there is a script for that. Pezz82 did a bunch of great setup videos on KZfaq, but sadly he's not doing anymore of those at the moment.

I know I'm 7 months late to reply to your comment, but the MiSTer can do everything you are talking about and it many cases it will do it better. I have mine connected to a 32" Sony XBR250 with a simple VGA to Component cable. Then you can use original controllers as well with an adapter or use some of the replica controllers from companies like RetroBit. I have most of the original consoles in my collection, but since I got the MiSTer, I put most of them away. I still have my Saturn and PS2 connected to my CRT, but that's about it. The MiSTer gives every bit of the original experience (minus the cartridge) and makes it super easy. There's also the benefit of technically better video/audio output than many of the consoles that need to be RGB modded to get the best quality.

Just FYI (not a murder, just insight), the MiSTer project is built atop the Terasic DE-10 board, which was intended as an education/prototyping board to help people get into FPGA development at a low barrier-to-entry price, on the order of 50% the cost-per-logic-unit of other entry level prototyping boards. It's not the very most powerful device out there that does this sort of work, but it is by far the most cost efficient device, and its capabilites are vast -- it's expected to have enough gates to ultimately recreate an accurate PS1 core (although probably not N64, alas).

It looks like save states are virtually impossible for certain systems via FPGA. An example of this is the Sega Genesis. There is save states support on the Mega Everdrive but it's really broken. If you go to the krikz forum or the mister forums you can read up on how it's virtually impossible to implement save states for many consoles via any fpga hardware. Major bummer my dudes. However I think we can work around this. Some mister cores do have save state support i.e GBA. For those consoles that don't have save state support we can use rom hacks like the Game Genie for stage select support and it appears that arcade games can get stage select support built in, as in the Dodonpachi core. What's the input lag situation like on the mister Mark? I was surprised you didn't mention this. The information I gathered regarding mister input lag was confusing and complicated.

Any time I see someone happily posting their Terra Onion modded Saturn on Reddit or whatever I wonder why they would even bother, they've basically just got an overly complicated AV cable for their ROMs. I'm still an OG hardware guy myself, simply because it feels "right" and is "the real thing" (note the scare quotes), but I wouldn't deny for a second that it's exciting seeing the changes possible through other solutions. Especially as display technology progresses further & further away from 20th century standards. We're still not that far off from that paradigm, but if in 15 years everyone's rolling with trixel-based virtual retina displays or something, that Sega Mega Drive native output designed for the world of 1988 might provide certain unforeseen hindrances.

Seriously, „closer to original hardware“ should be seen as a relative term anyways. Take the SNES. It had several revisions and they all behaved slightly different. Some people found the Analogue Super NT to be too dull on the colors, others found it to be too bright. TV r Analogue Super NT was weird in that sense, as it was closer to the earliest revision, while being super sharp, which was impossible on the first revision SNES. And even within the same revision, they could still differ slightly, due to aging and stuff. I’m at the point where I don’t care anymore. To me it’s simply close enough. And this is where things are going to be on all retro devices someday.
