What if I told you there were places that celebrate Christmas twice? I’m in a Moldovan village, and I’m about to celebrate Xmas for the second time this year. And we also celebrate New Year twice - on 1st and 14th of January. Crazy? Keep on watching!

Dear Elena, thank you for a really interesting explanation of the different calendars, allowing us into your grandparents home and the lovely singing, all in all, you are a brilliant ambassador for Moldova, which I am hoping to visit in the near future. Perhaps I could invite you and your husband to share a meal with me at a restaurant of your choice, until then may I wish you and your family health and happiness, kindest regards, Derek x

Great video! I am a Ukrainian Greek Catholic myself and traditionally we celebrated Christmas on the 7th as well, though for those of us in America we synched up with everyone else and celebrate on the 25th. After the events of the last year I think celebrating on the 7th is over for good in the Ukrainian Catholic and probably Orthodox churches as well... Good job on the historical overview, the only thing I would add is that the emperor Constantine picked December 25th as the date to celebrate Jesus' birth to try to co-opt the cult of Mithras whose birthday was also on December 25th.

Mulțumesc mult! I've got lots of Russian and Ukrainian friends here in the US who likewise celebrate twice. Seems a good reason to put on a feast. 😁

@@redhead_inc - Moldova stole my heart the first time I visited. I came almost as an afterthought. I was planning a trip to visit Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. After talking with a waitress friend originally from Moldova, I added it to my itinerary. My arrival was hilarious. I arrived in the evening from Kyiv on 9 May. This trip was my first in eastern Europe, so 9 May didn't register. I got a taxi from the Chisinau airport (talk about a wild ride) and arrived in the city hearing explosions! After I arrived at my Airbnb around midnight, I finally figured out that the "explosions" were just fireworks and that people were celebrating. Moldovans whom I've met have all been super friendly, and at least in Chisinau, many young people speak English fluently, certainly vastly better than my Russian and infinitely better than my clumsy attempts at Romanian. But as already noted, Moldovans are a friendly bunch. I was "educated" about the significance of 9 May, made a few friends and spent the next few days discovering the capital city. I was so smitten that I planned a return trip the next year, during the annual wine festival, to see more of the country. What's not to love about Moldova? It's literally Europe's hidden gem. A beautiful country rich in culture and history. (Though I still want a word with that guy who lied that there were only 600 steps to the Thanksgiving Candle in Soroca when there are over 650 -- I say this jokingly). I had hoped to return in 2020, but the world hit a snag with COVID. Then came 2022 and the war in Ukraine. I went back to Moldova again, but this time as a volunteer with a group called iGrow to help construct mobile hospital units for deployment in Ukraine. This wasn't a tourist visit, but it reinforced my love for Moldova because of their commitment to its neighbor Ukraine. Your country has a special place in my heart, and it's a place I'd be proud to call home.

I was born in Moldova but currently live overseas and never got to properly learn most traditions or reasons why they are celebrated
