Why Motorcycle Riders WAVE (Feeling Obligated)

Perhaps you've seen motorcycle riders wave or gesture (salute) to other riders. Maybe you ride a motorcycle or some other motorbike and were waved at and wondered if you should wave back?
In this episode, I share my humble opinions about the infamous "wave" topic and explain why I don't wave in every situation.

Are there times when you don't feel like waving to someone on another bike?

Back in the 70’s it seemed like the “wave” was with the left arm 90 degrees from the shoulder and then 90 degrees up from the elbow and the hand in a fist - like a right turn signal. Not sure when it changed to the current wave. It sort of feels good to be on a scooter and get a wave from a Harley. Probably, at the biker bar, he’s like “hey Earl, I just waved to some guy on a scooter”. And Earl would be like, “uh huh, yep”.

I rode up next to two guys on Harleys in an adjacent (left turn) lane, but slightly behind them. They both look back at the same time and I just say, "Sup!?" They look me and my bike up and down and didn't say a word. Probably thinking..."Who's the Dumb and Dumber guy on the scooter?" Oh well.... I could care less.

When I began riding, I was told it was more about a bikers prayer to one another. I have heard longer versions, but from what I was taught, it is a short prayer, and telling fellow riders to keep both wheels down. I think the exact expression I was told, "May you keep both wheels on the pavement." Not sure how others were taught, and obviously different places will have different stories, or meanings. No, I do not always wave, not being snobbish, just I am normally focused on what is going on around me, and yes, sight-seeing. But sometimes, you could be having issues with the bike, curves, or dozens more reasons for not waving.

Even people who drive jeeps do a 2finger wave from the steering wheel.signifies a fellow jeep driver who gets what its like to drive a jeep

So far 90%+ of other riders have either given me the wave or waved back at me, even though I’m on my ADV150. I have only had Harley guys ignore me, but that’s okay too! I think it’s just the acknowledgment that “hey, we are both out here on two wheels, and good on ya!” Thanks for the ride, Trek!

I've ridden motorcycles for years, but have only had my ADV 150 for a couple of weeks. There is a definite difference in waves I get on the scooter vs my motorcycle. I'm okay with that. Actually had gotten to a point on the motorycyle I would rarely initiate a wave, but ALWAYS return a wave. I ride my motorcyle in the mountains as do many other motorcyclists/bikers and waving to everyone will wear you out. Doing the same thing on the ADV, I don't initiate but always return a wave.

If it becomes a distraction or hinders safety for whatever reason I don't do it. There's a time and place for it, but not in every situation. I try to if I can just because I'm a considerate soul, but it's not the law either.

I usually wave if I can but I have found that Harley riders tend to only wave to other Harley riders, that's just my experience with it. I ride a honda shadow 1100 but hoping to get a nice scooter soon.

I find it hard to see the type of bike until I nearly pass them and look at it so I don't worry about the bike, but more the gesture. Hey, good luck on the scooter purchase!

I’m not big on the wave and pretty much never initiate one, but always return it when someone else does it first out of courtesy . Have to admit that when another biker is coming the other way, I say to myself “gee, I hope they don’t friggin wave”. And I rarely do a stiff downward arm 2 finger salute, as I don’t like to be that far from my handlebars, so it usually a 90 degree elbow bent,parallel to the ground peace sign next to my grips. Should be good enough. 😂

What type of product can I use to wash my bike with? I’m learning a lot from you!

Oh my, that's a very deep and complex discussion depending on how far down the hole you'd like to venture and there's probably tens of thousands of videos on the topic. Personally, I'd fill a bucket with your favorite automotive shampoo like from Chemical Guys, use a sponge and clean a section at a time, avoid spraying water directly (high pressure) inside the motor area. It's okay to get the entire bike wet cause they're engineered for outside weather conditions. After cleaning rinse the entire bike with light pressure and get one of those drying towels (for automotive) and wipe it down! Simple as that. They also make spray on, wipe off cleaners if the bike is mildly dusty. I tried FLOWGENIX in one of my videos. Smells like bubble gum. 😁 That's even easier. Whatever you enjoy the most. Guess I'll have to create a video on that huh? 🤔 Why not! Thanks for the reminder.

I’ll wave, but I don’t look to see if they wave back…I couldn’t handle the rejection if they don’t reciprocate 😢

I get the hand gesture from the harley safety course. The gesture is a reminder to be safe in your ride methods.

I don’t wave. Don’t have a bell on my bike either. I’ll wave if I know ya but that’s it. Might think too. I’m not part of a brotherhood just because I’m in two wheels.

I get it. It's a choice like anything else. Also depends on my mood. Sometimes I just want to ride and not feel obligated to deal with anyone.
