Mumbai has around 400,000 auto rickshaws, while Delhi has around 70,000 and Bangalore has around 85,000. Also, Mumbai has a smaller area (in terms of roads) which can be serviced by autos (they are not allowed in South Bombay) and due to poor infrastructure. So, Mumbai definitely has a greater supply of auto-rickshaws which makes the market tending to perfect competition
Mumbai is an expensive city to live in and that leaves people with a smaller disposable income.Cartels where people collude to increase prices are a feature of oligopolies as the return is maximized. In Mumbai, if the meter prices are not followed, there will be a sharp decline in demand and a lot of auto-rickshaw drivers will not make any money. Low disposable income also ensures people do not go beyond what is affordable. Hence, a lot of auto-rickshaws will make no money if they all collude to not follow the fare rates.
To make matters worse for them, most of the Mumbai rickshaws are driven on contracts by the drivers. They do not own the rickshaws. One needs to pay anything from Rs. 300-500 to the owner as a daily fee. They need to maximize their returns to make ends meet. While in other Indian cities, auto rickshaws are mostly driven by owners who can afford to have few slow days.

Not having to bargain everytime was the best experience when I stayed in Airoli, Navi Mumbai sadly no one uses meter in panvel and most ask more than what it would be if we go by meter.

Bombay auto drivers are very good. They go by meter always. Except in Navi Mumbai they seem to be bullying consumers. Traffic police can come to people's rescue in implementing these rules. Travel is much simpler when meter is followed. Not sure why other cities do not follow these basic simple rules. Consumers should insist.

This was the biggest downside for me shifting from Mumbai to Bangalore. Bangalore autos are 4 to 5 times more expensive. In fact Ola and Uber cabs are cheaper. The problem is cabs incl. online autos are not easily available. Often you have to take auto and pay more.

Consider buying a two wheeler and use metro,bus as much as you can. The auto wallahs are greedy bastards. Things will improve once you metro gets built completely until then transport is a bit hassle in Bangalore. Anyways hope you have a good time in Bangalore

Not true for distances past 9km or more then Uber seems more viable for short distances uber and ola charge 70-90 while normal autos if you get them to run on meter will cheaper. Getting autos to run on meter can sometimes be a hassle you have to wait for an auto that agrees to run on meter.Normally they will run meter but during rain or past 8:30PM it can be hard in some areas,For normal Bangalorean we just try to reason,argue to get what we want some autos try to take advantage if you dont speak native language if you can it will be easier

@@agentnoobz5588 I have never had any auto agree to run on meter nor have anyone I know. Ola and Uber turn out to be cheaper over both short and long distances. Mostly I am able to get auto on Ola/Uber/Rapido auto for long distances and those are cheaper than cabs. But on booking offline they are always more expensive than cabs.

marathi me bola kar local lagega barobr rate se dega. mera bachpan gya he . pune most auto ka haal aisa he kyu ki bahot saal se log yahape bus use kar rahe. mostly clg wale ghar tak bus aata he.... tho hamare liye ye esy he pata se udhar jane ke kitne paise hotte he... baher se aane wale llog ko pakka chutiye bana denge 😂

Kolkata Best auto in India I daily travel with my bike otherwise auto 10 km route takes only 20 rs 😂 I whenever see Bangalore and Mumbai auto rates got some small heart attack. 3km route ask for 100 rs. ☠️ I mean I Will buy fuel rs 100 it's give me 40km millage at my bike. 👍

In Kolkata there is no Reserve autos....The Autos used to travel on fixed routes where the get flawless commuters...Like from a railway station to a office area....So the rates are always same and its always 10-20 Rs and its share autos ....so its actually unique and affordable

The auto fare in Mumbai is pre decided by government and auto union the current rate for 3km is around RS 50 which is pretty decent

Being neutral as I have lived in Mumbai and Pune and have travelled to many major cities mumbai is the best for public transport in india. Delhi is second best because of metro connectivity and e rikshaw but still mumbai and Delhi cannot be compared. Hyderabad being so developed still in daylight they charged double . Pune main half return system hai men you pay half the return fair. Which is absolutely absurd

In Chennai they ask for Rs: 50 and later charge 200 at drop point or mid journey. Sometimes they drop u before reaching the location.

In Kolkata Autos are given standard routes with predertermined fares... So auto can't charge extra fare or go anywhere outside of their routes... And routes always written in front of auto... And also autos are not allowed in main road

You forgot another factor that contributes to auto drivers being humble and not harassing customers, which is demographics. Majority of auto drivers in Mumbai are migrants coming from North India. Compare that with cities like Pune, Delhi and Bangalore where majority is of locals. Ab jab Pune ya Bangalore me metered autos available hain, waha par harrassment ke bahut incidents saamne aate hain because wo log dadagiri dikhate hain. Maarne ki bhi dhamki dete hain wo. They refuse plying by meter because they can do so and the local police supports them. On the other hand, Mumbai me door se log auto chalane aate hain. If they argue, they will be slapped with a fine and probably have their licence revoked kyunki local police ke saath unka koi gang form nahi ho saka kabhi bhi. Here I assume local police are very active in discriminating with outsiders and supporting local people who speak their language, which is true in most of the cases.

23 Rupees is the base price in Meter auto in Mumbai however , larger the distance price goes up quickly. Shared Auto is also available its cheaper than Meter Auto. Bus is very cheap here BEST bus charges only 6 Rupees throughout the route. Train is highly convenient for round trip it is approx Rs. 20. Metro rates are bit high around Rs.60 for a round trip. Public Transportation is quite cheap in Mumbai.

these auto wala are worst here in Gurugram they hiked whenever they want in night ₹20 ride will become ₹70-80 and they have all grouping of all auto walas they dont care about traffic rules they encroached sidewalks and they drive like they are flying airplane on roads and yes they are rude AF once i booked an auto from uber they show me price ₹100 i waited for 15 min in night at metro station when he arrived he asked me he will go only when i pay him ₹150 at that time i am out of mind but its night that's why i have to comply with him now i only book Cabs

Like this after traveling we have pay 100₹ according to show in meter but there 2 person traveling in rickshaw then we have individual pay 100₹ mean total 200₹ ,, or it cost 100 for both mix . Which one is right pls tell me .

In Kolkata there is no Reserve autos....The Autos used to travel from one point to another...Like from a railway station to a office area....So the rates are always same and its always 10-20 Rs and its share autos ....so its actually unique and affordable

I was in delhi 3 km ke liye auto wala 250rs bol raha tha mene mana kiya or vahi mumbai me malad se andheri tak 75 to 90rs hota 10km ka distance hai meters pe.

I think it's not Mumbai that has higher number of autos, the other cities lack autos. Government can't force anyone to buy autos but they can make it difficult to get permit. So Mumbai has more of a free market whereas in other cities an artificial scarcity has been created.

When I first visited mumbai, i asked the auto driver the fare and he told me that autos in mumbai work on meter. It's really Good because you can literally stop any unoccupied auto and tell him the destination and your total fare will be calculated automatically by the end of the ride through the meter.

Yes there are too many autos in Mumbai, and they create problem here in city. And yes some of them got permit due political connection.

The government does not allow autos in South Mumbai. So it is not a free market.

Kolkata Best auto in India I daily travel with my bike otherwise auto Auto 10 km route takes only 20 rs 😂 Bus fares are 10 to 20 rs. Metro start with 10 rs upto 25 rs. Local Trains start with 5 rs for more than 20km. And local train available all around the City. Trams are also start with 5rs 7rs. You can compare kolkata auto with Indian railway. I whenever see Bangalore and Mumbai auto rates got some small heart attack. 3km route ask for 100 rs. ☠️ I mean I Will buy fuel rs 100 it's give me 40km millage at my bike. 👍
