If the anime was completely loyal to the novel, then the female cast would've been even richer. The anime skipped through a chapter in Volume 1 named, "The Mother of the Greyrat Family", where enough characterization is given to Zenith for her to become one of the best written female characters in the show. There's also Elinalise, Therese and Nanahoshi and that's not mentioning multiple characters who haven't appeared in the anime, yet.

I think the anime botched episode 23. The biggest mistake was not explaining Rudeus state of mind properly. He wasn't just sad. He was so depressed he hadn't eaten for nearly two weeks (he couldn't stomach food and puked if he tried to eat), he also had nightmares every time he tried to sleep so he must have been very sleep deprived (that'd wreak havoc with your state of mind). There was no recovery on sight. And no returning because only Rudeus could disperse the perpetual sandstorm blocking the way to the area with the teleporter. He was basically on a one way trip to the grave. Roxy literally saved his life. In the book the whole event feels like when stranded people eat their dead. It's reproachable, but understandable.

Theres soooooooooooooooooooo much more lore and skipped content of side character that the anime of MT didn't. So i highly recommend giving the LN a go. :D

I'd disagree with sylphie being the hole. However im not an anime only. Ive read the LN. Sylphies father Laws asked sylphie if shes gonna let rudy always solve her problems and then she wanted to become stronger for rudy. Rudy was kinda the roxy for sylphie. She didnt have friends then rudy came along. She was assaulted for her hair and rudy protected her. Rudy was the reason sylphie was able to build self confidence. Rudys teachings also protected during and after the mana disaster. Back in the village sylphie kept her hair short so the green is less noticable. Sylphie is similar to eris however eris does have more development. They both heavily leaned on rudy for everything. Eventually a event occurred where they couldnt protect rudy. Then they decided to get better so that wont happen again. Great video tho.

I feel you on Sylphy 99.9 % cause I felt the same way about her (I'm also an anime only) but for me that change when you see her go out for blood trying to kill nanahoshi when she says she's the cause of the teleport incident. Seriously, that scene is the best. I who couldn't accept her for being bland was transfixed with her in that instant. So yeah...

Sylphy was written like that intentionally, sadly the anime never went into it :( , before rudeus got sent off to teach eris sylphy's hole world was Rudy that's also a big reason why Rudy was sent away because Paul didn't want Sylphy's world to be Rudy, I recommend to read the LN

Each of the main girls represents something the rudy has to come to learn Sylphie - Compassion (for other / yourself) and Understanding Roxy - Knowledge and Exploration Eris - Strength and Loyalty

So refreshing and satisfying to watch someone who understands this well the characters and the world of this series, without the need to read the LN you undarstand it all. Well exept that Sarah didn't cause rudeus ED, that was Eris

I have to say my favorites are Roxy and Eris (in that order). But, you are wrong about Sylphie. A lot of her story got cut in the anime. If you've read the light novel you know Sylphie (as Fitz) has fought off and killed a lot of assassins (both while staying at the castle and while traveling to Sharia). Ariel's trip to Sharia was a huge ordeal (they sent assassins to try to off her at Asura's border). She left with around 12 retainers, but only 4 people reached Sharia alive. Sylphie will later have some chances to fight again, but she does become one of the main pillars of the household so it's not that often (but she can switch to brave and skilled fighter when needed). Though, I guess her dreams ARE more like a traditional girl's compared to Roxy (marry and become a teacher) and Eris (fight with her sword and bang).

The thing about Sylphy is that she spent most of her time attached to Rudues since their first encouter as children. She was raised and loved by his family, she even got her perverted thoughts and actions from Lillia (lmao), but the point is Sylphy's attachement to Rudeus is understandable, because she feels as if they were family. She didn't get as much building for her character, but we do know for sure how attached she was to the Buena Village, to her parents and potentially Rudeus's too, too a point were she had a breakdown once Nanahoshi revealed she was responsible for that. The calmest most loving and softest character snapped that bad, for maybe the first part of her life. I think this alone is enough of a highlight to Sylphy as a character, even tho she isn't the most complex, the one with the best building nor the one with the greatest actions, she was and still the best supporting character to Rudy since day one. Since he proved how he can change to protect her from bullies, till the day were she helped him through his OD But in the end Eris 🔛🔝

(Spoilers) Yes, Sylph kinda feel less deep in the anime until now, but in the novels we have a lot more of hers internal monologues that full it up and made her the best girl. She thinks of being a greater mage or standing to continue as a guard or conquering dungeons. She acknowledge all of that, she knows she is capable. However she look to Rudeus and in the future again to her daughter, than decide that they need her more, and she can be happy being ""just the mom"" (what is honored alone). Sometimes it hurts her, yes, but until the beginning of Book 26, where I'm, she is happy, and play a vital role. She is so precious.

In the anime, Silphie’s character missed out on her most important arc because it was just glossed over between episodes. They did her dirty. The anime needed to do a stand alone episode ‘Silphie - Assassin Killer’ that should have matched the ‘Eris - Goblin Hunter’ episode. (And while they are at it, a ‘Roxy - Dungeon Diver’ episode wouldn’t hurt.) … This would have made her a badass in her own right, as a unique character with her own story lines and strengths. But that was skipped, so she comes off as a one note character. That being said… Eris is “Best Girl”.

Of course that Mushoku Tensei has the best female characters, Mushoku Tensei has the best characters in general PERIOD. Everybody in this show, down to the one shot background characters, feels like actual people not characters. It’s sometimes scary how every realistic and true to the world the characters feel, when I watch this show I feel like a god spectating on a real world that exists somewhere, far, far away. Aisha's "loyalty" was even down played in the anime lol I won't deny or confirm what you said about Eris, only that you'd be asking a lot to fit in any character's reintroduction with how few episodes are left in season 2. There's really no rush, since they're not even quite at the half way point in the whole story. Sylphy's growth kinda happened outside of Rudy's purview and as a result didn't get nearly as much time on screen in the anime. With her growth mostly centering around Ariel. You probably won't get much more either, because iirc most of it was shown from that chapter was adapted as S2E0.

First, here are the reason why as an anime only you should know this is not true: - she has a goal of her own, she is literally helping Ariel right now to take the kingdom. - Sylphie spent 2 years with Rudeus before getting separated from him, then she grew independent from Rudeus to the point that during the whole academy arc it was her who Rudeus always went to ask for advice. - As a 10yo kid Sylphie protected Ariel from dangerous assasins and still works as her guardian. - She even has a fashion sense now from hanging with the princess and that why she is the one who picked Rudeus new robe Now from what was skipped from the LN (things that should've been adapted this season): - Rudeus ask her if she would leave Ariel should he ask, and Sylphie says she would probably leave him because Ariel needs her and Rudeus would be ok without her. - She is able to kill when she needs to, that assasin you saw on episode 0 got all of her limbs severed when Sylphie attacked her, Sylphie is very deadly and doesn't hold back like Rudeus. - The whole travel from Asura to Sharia was skipped, Sylphie had to deal with constant attacks from assasins and she killed a lot of them, being the strongest ally from Ariel - She is the one who made Ariel president of the student council in the academy. Linia and Pursena were harrasing Ariel so Sylphie got mad and formulated a plan to beat them and use that to improve Ariel's standing. They baited a public attack from the beast girls, Sylphie got hit by the vocal magic from Pursena but was able to recover (something Rudeus wasn't capable of) and beat Linia, Pursena and 20 of their lackeys easily. This achievement was given to Ariel who used this to become the student council president in her second year which was unprecedented, if it wasn't for that, Ariel would've to wait until at least her fourth year. Meanwhile, you can check Eris POV, her whole world is just Rudeus, not sure how you got your interpretation from what we see in the anime but if you want confirmation just check her POV. Eris' entire existence depends on Rudeus, there's nothing deep there. If Sylphie doesn't have a goal of her own, then for sure Eris doesn't either 😂😂 With this video I'm noticing some extreme bias, everything from Eris is shown and interpreted incredibly charitable while Sylphie is interpreted extremely uncharitable. And this is not a problem of not having context from the novels, even just seeing from the anime's pov, you are extremely charitable to Eris character to the point of making shit up in your mind of what her characters is about, while completely ignoring everything you have seen from Sylphie and dismissing her. 10:39 I mean... how can you say that she is just "there"... when Rudeus spent so much time asking her for advice... You remember that Eris was literally just extra baggage during the whole journey right? While you're on the LN I would highly recommend reading through Eris's manga, it goes over the events that happen after S1 and the trauma she has from witnessing Orsted kill Rudeus. Reading through it made me like Eris even more as a character and it kinda made me understand a bit more why she left Rudeus in S1.

You are wrong about Sylphy, but sadly its because the anime misstreated her so much, we didnt see her at all in season 1 and now in season two her character and Story got Reduced to just being the perfect wife or something, Sylphy is actually more deep than you think, the fact that she is so Loyal to Rudeus does not come from nothing.

Sylphy actually has soo much to her, that people unfortunately dont think about because of just how easy it is for people to just correlate her with trashy yes-girls that act similar to how she does, without thinking much about it. If eris hadnt been showed from the start to the finish, it wouldhave happened with her too. But trust me on this, every scene we have seen sylphy in(or Not seen sylphy in, but the writing is so impeccable that out brains can just fill up the spaces of the life she spent in asura), has in some way or another affected her development process. Every character in this show has had a lot of developmental issues, like most real life people have too. Lilia fucked up her child, the displacement incident fucked up norn, sylphy and so many other characters. Those were clearly shown in the anime. You have seen how sylphy has become, to the point that people have literally raged for an hour about how the writer RUINED her character. But those developmental issues were clearly shown in the anime!, and YOU were the one who either didnt notice them, or saw and ignored them because "its a EscApiST fantaSy aNimE mAde for mALeS sO iT pOssiBLY caN't go that deep, right?" and still expected her to be perfect. It was a child, in a fantasy story, and it still affected you so much to rage over it. Imagine that being your child, that's precisely how developmental issues work. Things that happen around a child changes their character even though it may look insignificant to you. We are just seeing it being fast forwarded, instead of waiting like 10 years to see that. Remember that paul sent rudeus to sharia because he didnt want sylphy to have her developmental issues? Well she solved some, some remained, some new ones she developed after that. The abrupt displacement incident fucked it up too. She spent HALF of her life away from her parents, or the people she grew up with till that point. Found out that her parents were dead, her homeland was no more. Growing up in a fucked up noble's environment in a medieval world. Mental issues, yup. No character in this series has had a perfect developmental phase, hence, nobody is perfect. Mushoku tensei DOES go that deep.

I won't spoil you. But as someone who has seen what's in the LN's, Sylphy WILL get her time to shine and be bad ass too. Probably not in season 3, but most likely in season 4.

If you have a problem with some characters being underdeveloped I highly recommend reading novels up to the current point the anime ends (volume 12). The anime cut off like 90% of Sylphie's development and lots of others too.

This show really is the show that proves you can like characters that do unlikeable things. So many of these characters do wrong things, Rudeus is a perv, Lilia seduced Paul, Paul is a cheater, Roxy uses Rudeus's depression to get with him, Eris is a bitchy tsundere, Sylphie played around for 4 fucking months before confessing, Einalese was a whore. And yet Rudeus is one of my favorite mc's in anime, Roxy is one of my favorite characters in general in anime, and just about all the other characters are still likeable despite some of their actions. It's honestly incredible. A lot of the characters change. Einalese, Rudeus, and Eris all change, Rudeus and Eris especially in a very natural-feeling way. Roxy did it to get Rudeus out of a deep depression that could've legit killed him. Sure, not all of their actions change or are justifiable, but somehow mushoku makes it so that doesn't even matter.

I agree. the women in this anime are incredible. In S2 episode 22, when Rudy and the rest came back from the Labyrinth, Lilia, despite being devastated herself about what happened, gritted her teeth and stood strong for Rudy. Hugged him and told him to rest and that she will take care of things. She's one of the female characters that fulfill a traditional female role i.e. house choirs, being very feminine, wife material, etc, but she's a very strong character. She's proof that you don't always need to give your female character a sword and make her badass in combat in order to make her into a strong female character.

Is interesting for me how the autor uses norn to take us back to reality, at least in the main light novels. Norn, been a faithful follower of Millis (which resembles in many aspects the morals of the occidental society) I think is used by the autor in many moments of glory and shame of rudeus, to remind us that his actions and thoughs are actually very questionable; and yet we found them funny and we are happy when he succeeds in his schemes. The autor risks getting us out of the fantasy setting, and yet is nice having those reflections as we watch and/or read.

Very well put together and argumented video. I enjoyed it. I'm curious if you've seen season 2 episode 0 like others have asked as well. From my point of view it really shows Silphye as her own character.

Sylphie is well written for being diverse among the cast. For eris to really shine she has to have that type of journey solo. You can't have every other female character doing that too. Sylphie is the timid childhood friend and like reality, she doesn't have goals cause not everyone does. Some people just coast along and build friendships along the way and that's what she does. I'm not saying she's a better character than the others but I don't think she was poorly written cause she fits what she's suppose to do. Be a strong base for Rudy that he never had before. Like she's down solid for him and while that goes against the boss queen narrative, if we're giving women options to do anything than being a support system to a man should be allowed even if it's boring. Cause it is. But boring and consistent is loved by some people

i would say sylphies simpish ways has allot to do with her childhood trauma, she grew up with no friends being bullied by every kid in the village until roxy got rudeus to get out of the house where rudeus was the first and only kid that defended her. in sylphy's eyes rudeus will allways be a hero figure that she will want to please, kinda like how every child grows up never wanting to let their parents down or be ashamed.

I'm one of those people who don't like Mushoku Tensei primarily because how the author cooked the final encounter with a certain dragon god, they ruined it for me. But I have to admit, Mushoku does make Isekai and Harem with a perverted protagonist two of the most bullied genre and one of the most despised character trope in the whole Anime industry look good and I respect them for it.

I think youre really not looking at Sylfie's character enough, just as you were talking i was thinking up counters to every point you had it feels like youre only looking at the surface level and what is directly shown and stated in regards to her character. Even in that regard there are still several things being overlooked.

I like sylphy as a character. Sure shes kind of plain but in a world that is always epic, i feel like her character gives us some level of grounding. Like, not everyone wants to be the best or live the most exciting life. She just wants a simple life with a family. Personally, i think thats completely fine. The female problem in most anime is that the female characters tend to act like theyve gotten stronger only to be knocked down again and pretty much just giving up. They goals and character plots tend to be pretty much cookie cutter. Thats my opinion at least

There are so many well written female characters. Elinalise is top tier. They cut way to much interactions between her and Rudy during the trip to begaritt. Princess Ariel is top tier as well. She is planing everything like a mastermind and she is really caring about her friends. She helped Sylphie out a lot of times and not because for her own benefit. Sylphie is the definition of a dream wife and she has incredible fighting abiliteis. Most of them got cut in the Anime, since they skipped the story where Ariel, Luke Fitz and a larger group of companions travelled to the Academy. they also Skipped the first 3 years of Ariel and how Fitz punished the bully gang that was led by Linia and Pursena. Roxy is very good as well and i think there are grat things to come with her. She just needs more screen time but the things we have seen from her so far are very good. Eris Character developement is absolutely fantastic. Just compare her from her first apperance to the end of Season 1 (not the part where she left Rudy)
