Why Muslim Refugees Are Finding Jesus

8 жыл бұрын

Muslim refugees in Europe are converting to Christianity. But governments are concerned that some are doing it just to get asylum. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Ben Mankiewicz, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
“Hundreds of Pakistanis and Afghans have been lining up at a local swimming pool in Hamburg, Germany, to be baptized as Christians. In the Netherlands and Denmark, as well, many are converting from Islam to Christianity, and the trend appears to be growing. Indeed, converts are filling up some European churches largely forsaken by their old Christian flocks.
All of which raises a question, not least, for the United States: If American presidential candidate Donald Trump gets elected and bars Muslims from entering the country, as he says he will, would the ban apply to Christians who used to be Muslims? How would one judge the quality of their faith?
For the moment, that quandary is a ways off for U.S. Homeland Security, but in Europe even now the phenomenon is fraught with echoes of the past, problems in the present, and omens for the future. Forced conversions of Muslims and Jews during the Spanish Inquisition were a dark page in Europe’s history. More than a little suspicion surrounds some of the current conversions, seen by some to be cynical bids to improve the chance of getting asylum. And, looking forward, it’s potentially quite dangerous for those who embrace the Gospel to return to homelands where abandoning Islam for another faith can be treated as a capital crime.”

What's up with the dislikes? They didn't promote Islam or anything, and they didn't really say anything controversial either. I have seen some biased videos with clickbait titles from these guys (where I do understand the dislikes), but this was not one of them. Or are the dislikes because they mentioned Muslims?
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 8 жыл бұрын
***** "There's a mob-mentality on youtube that you can't talk about those things unless you're saying they don't exist (rape/race) or that you hate them (muslims/feminism)." And people are wondering why certain atheist channels don't post many videos about Islam... Well, maybe that's the reason - it will just create a shitstorm. First people complain about the channels not posting videos about Islam and when they post videos about Islam, they complain about those videos. Yeah, Islam (especially) is a topic that you can't really have a rational conversation about on the internet. People will either call you "Islamophobic" or a "regressive".
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 8 жыл бұрын
aferreb1 AIU to my understanding is not that respected in the atheist community (well, not saying that that is a reason to hate him). I have seen some of his videos and comments and to me he seems kind of biased. Now, I'm not saying TYT is not biased because sometimes they are and they also use annoying clickbait titles. But this exact video was pretty neutral and it didn't even have a clickbait title. So maybe people are just hating it because it's TYT and because they mention Muslims in the title.
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 8 жыл бұрын
Bobhams Even if that applies to TYT in general, I don't see it applying to this particular video. Are the reasons you gave a reason to dislike every single TYT video without watching it first?

+aferreb1 Oh, you're interested in evidence are you? Well, this should be easy, see /watch?v=5tnXsDB7NCc&list=FLQj6GBDbFPAA0ivV5nmidXw&index=8 Summary: It's a video about a Jewish attack on a gay pride parade. During the video they make the point that Israel is the most progressive country towards gays in that region despite the recent event. They go on to talk about Islamic extremism when it wasn't strictly necessary or the topic of the video. Jimmy mentions that he said on twitter that "All religion could be considered a mental illness", and the response he got was "Wouldn't it be great if you said that about Islam". They then joke about what the word "All" means, and about how some idiotic people have it in their heads that they are defending Islam. They end the video by saying that all religion is a problem, and shouted in unison "INCLUDING ISLAM". If that isn't enough for you, nothing is.

As a Swede I can say they are mostly wrong, yes there are some who came from Syria but the majority are not, and are not fleeing from IS, and they are here to have a better life, but when they don't get their asylum (or what ever it is called/spelled in English) fast enough or they see how bad condition the country is in, they go back or elsewhere. those who do not want to be a part of Islam they are the one who convert to Christianity or call them selves atheist and drop the "Muslim label". but those who still following Islam tend to riot, throw rocks at police firefighter and ambulance crew. they tend to skip school, participate in gang rapes and so on. This is mainly because Islam isn't like other religion, its an ideology, and politics are not separated from religion. Islam haven't made any changes to fit into the modern society, and are probably the only religion who encourage to lie to non Muslim (non believers of Islam). but to point this out is bad according media and in many peoples eyes and we are often label together with true racist and Nazi persons and groups so it takes often some digging to truly see who is and who isn't. Citizens of European countries tend to be like women in forced marriages with an abusing husband, and when they tell their parents about it, they being told to bring shame to their name and what ever you say, it is a lie.

some are probably discriminated but today we got an "invasion" of Muslim immigrants (often illegal) who not necessary are "black" who end up chasing the equivalent to "the American dream", or have other motive, but finding out the country (Sweden in this case, but cant see it wont be much different in many other EU countries) aren't that great as promised/hoped. Christianity gave us the Dark Ages. We lost the ancient Greek knowledge after Rome's destruction. We were re-introduced to this ancient knowledge through contact with the Islamic empire of the day. The Enlightenment resulted from this. The lsamic empire preserved knowledge and edmired it. The Christians burnt their books.

Well, that phrase is actually not very common in daily usage. The only reason this is a thing is due to American stereotyping. And just translating it as "hurry" leads to hilarious misuse of the phrase because it actually asks someone to end whatever they are doing quickly, implying that you want them to do something else. Like if you want to drive somewhere but your kid has to pee, so you tell them to make it quick. In stark contrast I have often seen it used as as equivalent of "hurry up" in the sense of "run faster", which is blatantly wrong to the point where it is a shorthand for American nazi stereotypes in movies.

It's easy to tell that Cenk is biased about The Crusades. One thing not mentioned about going with no religion: you don't have to seek out a priest or religious leader to leave a religion so therefore it's not something going to be reported. As for using as a reason for asylum, some of the stricter nations may need proof of it and that is not something most can just "prove"

You also forget how many give up religion over the idea of "Why did you take my loved one?!" perspective. Other factors to also consider: If Apostrophe gets you beheaded, your going to practice Islam If your society is highly discriminatory against other religions or atheism you practice Islam. So in a very strict society with mandatory state religion you follow the faith to a T regardless if you believe it or not.

There is a historic precedence where a large percentage of people convert to the religion of their liberator/savior. Look at Koreans liberated from Japan after WW2. A large portion of Koreans converted to Christianity. South Korea is the only East Asian country that has Christianity as the largest religion of the nation. In this case, it's more to the effect of refugees assimilating to the country they are migrating and being given asylum. I'm certain many pragmatics were also involved by reciprocity of generosity granted by churches. So this should not be too surprising.

One of the reasons I think they're not "converting" to no religion, but instead convert to Christianity, is German bureaucracy. In Germany, the branch of Christianity you're registered in is on your certificate and you often have to disclose your registered religion (only if it's Catholic or Evangelical-Lutheran though!) when you apply for whatever (jobs or health insurance etc.). However, if you don't belong to the Catholic Church or the Evangelical-Lutheran Church, you have to check "other" or "none". So Muslims and Atheists would have to check the same box. Since many people are biased, they obviously automatically assume an Arabic-looking person is Muslim - not Atheist - when they're "other" or "none" on their certificate/application. So it's much, much easier as a refugee from a Muslim country to convert to Christianity than to no religion in Germany.

I see on conservative videos they talk about hating people who are not Christians but on liberal videos they hate and make fun of religious people. I have a solution to this problem. Stop with hate and love each other. Yeah I know it's a long shot but here me out. All we have to do is respect people and their choices so that means if someone is religious or atheist respect their decision. If they start to be rude about it it's called "I respect your opinion about that's not for me". Religion doesn't make you do bad things it's the people who convinced you to do those bad things. For example Reinhard Heydrich was a Christian. He served in the Nazi party and was evil cause he helped Himmler come up with the "final solution". Okey here's a Christian called MLK. He brought people together. Now for atheists. Bill Gates has identified himself as a atheist and he has donated so much money to help people who need it. Stalin was a atheist and killed his own people. Love each other.

When facing such a difficult situation, I'm glad so many can find comfort through faith. I volunteer in a Christian funded food bank where we give food to the needy, no questions asked. We do not try to convert anyone. If someone sees this generosity and wants to convert, that's not an unreasonable reaction. Honestly I believe faith inspires people to help others more often than being an atheist would. I'm not saying an atheist cannot be charitable, it's just that so many charities are funded through faith based organizations. People love to hate on Christians (mainly because they don't fight back), but truthfully most of us just want to help. Edit: There are actually some interesting studies done showing that the religious are more likely to donate to charity as well as Christian charities being more reliable www.forbes.com/sites/williampbarrett/2011/11/30/the-200-largest-u-s-charities-for-2011/

The key fact would be that they are "mainly Afghans and Iranians". Both countries are currently considered "safe" under german law, meaning migrants from Afghanistan and Iran would be likely to be deported at some point. Syrians however would have no real incentive to convert, because Syria isn't considered "safe", they are in no danger of being deported. Muslim, Christian or otherwise, Germany doesn't deport people into an active warzone. The motivation for the current converts could hardly be more apparent.

I appreciate Ben saying that these people who are converting are likely just seeing that most christians just want to help. In my experience most pastors will help anyone regardless of their religion or lack there of. What's up with all the hate for christians? Why can't people just leave people alone? If you wanna be christian that's fine! If you want to be agnostic or atheist that's fine! If you want to be Muslim that's fine! Liberals and progressives are suppose to be about civil rights! What about the right to believe whatever you want? The hate people have for people of religion is absurd when most people of religion don't hate anyone. They just want to live their lives and believe that they believe in peace. For those who believe that everyone has to believe what I believe, they are insane and wrong. The same reason that Jews used to convert in some European countries where they were discriminated against. But I've heard locally that some dying Protestant groups are getting more members, but partly it's just because they haven't been exposed to Christian teaching previously and the actual Christians who believe in their religion's teachings treat the refugees with kindness and hospitality. The numbers are not that big, but there are some. Also, Christians in Middle East are fleeing, but everyone just assumes that Mideasterners are Muslim.

People don't mass convert to being atheist, because people are used to having someone they can turn to, a diety, that they've learned to depend on and rely on for sanctity. Therefore, it will never be the case where large groups of people decide they're ok on their own, and to give up the idea of the afterlife completely.

There is a church tax in Germany. If you pay it, you get some benefits, like a better kindergarten or school for your kids, because a lot of institutions are "sponsored" by church and as an atheist or a muslim you don't get accepted. This creates some huge problems. For example, some nurses are forced to stay in church, because most hospitals get money from the church and if you convert to atheism or other religion, you will loose your job. So there are some practical reasons to be christian in Germany.
