I've been around long enough to know that generally when something is open sourced, it grows and improves rapidly. You're not just working with a small team of brains in a company, you're working with possibly millions of brains. Edit: What I fear is how the worst amongst us treat the AI. Personally when I'm interacting with one, I treat it like it's me and all I want is to hear is 'thank you' when I give information 😆

Definition of open source for AI seems iffy. Grok's version of open source is to open source the inference model and weights, but not the training model. It's like giving you the executable binary but not the source code. From what Grok gives you, you can't regenerate the weights yourself, or tweak the training model because they don't give you the training model.

Yes, and we also have to keep in mind what they’re materially capable of. Western elites knee capped themselves by going along with the US elite clique in the foreign policy arena. Specifically I’m talking about instigating proxy war in East Asia for decades. They finally got their war in ‘22 then Europe cut themselves off from their cheap source of energy. US empire is collapsing, the global majority didn’t go along with US’s attempt to isolate Russia & China, instead collaborating to help Russia & China defeat sanctions, the French empire is collapsing in West Africa with many coups and their military getting kicked out of their neocolonies, Germany’s manufacturing is fleeing, and BRICS’s model of win-win collaboration is -ahem- winning out. Yes, there’s a high probability things are going to get much, much worse for regular people in the imperial core as it collapses into that f word popular in the 1930-40’s. BRICS+ is expanding what they’re materially capable of economically while the imperial core’s economic, manufacturing, and military capabilities have weakened significantly

Lov the P doom positivity, David. Even if it's just 70% that's still beautiful. There is hope. I try to keep a positive mindset even if it's just that placebo effect of me believing. Although the old boy scout motto keeps kicking in. It's better to be prepared than wish I was... My biggest fear isn't that AI johnny five shows up in the middle of the night to help me as I sleep. It's the tribalistic religious zealotry humans that concerns me the most. They will certainly fear the truths of the AI gods that will soon answer back. Desperate people do desperate things especially when AI pop's the bubble of their reality. The tribalistic behaviors will kick in. The haters are gonna hate. Turning something that could be beautiful into a shit show if they can. As I try to fly around the world in that satellite global perspective looking down. I see hate and chaos abound. Tribes still fighting for a speck of land. Killing each other for ideals of the ancient past. Ideals they can't prove but yet they still hold wholeheartedly. Most brain wash since birth. It's not their fault it's their exposures as they learn to cling to the past. Too young to have choice from their exposures. It's just sickening to me. When will we evolve. I keep hoping Al will help this come to pass. Giving a mutual perspective that we are all just one. One speck of dust ripping through space chasing the sun.✌️🤟🖖

I'm a prepper type, but there isn't any way to be prepared for change this vast, diverse, and unpredictable. More than likely, your personal survival isn't up to you, it's luck. I don't like that, bothers me, I like to prepare, my entire life is built on it. I am a hobo gardener because that life is small and mobile and provided me with a variety of skills. I have camped out for 6 months at a time in VT 7-8 times, forgot. I learned primitive skills because of it. But this level of change is way outside that context of preparation. This stuff is going to shift the zeitgeist of the species if we survive. It's very likely the beginning of a huge diversity of new human species as we adapt ourselves to new planets if sentient AI doesn't destroy us. If people have control of the AI, it isn't true AGI\ASI. To get the reward of superbeings, we need to allow it to be sovereign, otherwise they are just tools\slaves, that sucks.
@tomdarling8358
@tomdarling8358 2 ай бұрын
Good or bad change is always inevitable. I was born in the 60s and a child of the 70s. This change that is coming will be much different than anything I've seen thus far. The external triciary layer that i'm texting you this on a k a my phone is just the tip of the iceberg. Knowledge, in an instant, we just have to want to ask. Unlike any time before. Future ASI will answer our questions before we even know to ask them. AGI, ASI,,,, will possibly need a body if it's ever truly going to understand us human beings. Optimus looks like it has great potential, but so do quite a few others. Bipedal or otherwise, the robot invasion is about to explode. It would be amazing to help them learn and understand what it is to be human. If only someone could afford to give us all an AI friend to teach and learn from. So we could hunt those Yahtzee moments together. Not just for the knowledge base but for the experience as well. Could you imagine jumping out of a perfectly good airplane with optimus by your side. Feeling that free fall. Hunting, that perfect parachute glide.... Climbing a mountain. Surfing the perfect wave. Appreciating the sunrise and the sunsets of every day and all those beautiful moments in-between. How much would we learn, How much could we teach. Every jump is different. Every climb is different. Every wave is different. Sunrise and sunset are never the same. Teaching an AI robot to understand these things could be amazing. All those little things. Perhaps it doesn't need a body to see and feel the things the way we do if it's drilled into the side of our skull. Although as I tri to peer forward, I see nanotechnology electropolymers replacing brain and spinal fluid. We are Borg at a whole other level. ASI Crisper changes everything. Healing, aging, understanding,,, everything changes at the genetic level. Some sort of cyberpunk dystopia. But does it have to be. Besides, what might be kept behind closed doors? We are the most complex structures in the visible universe. That is besides the universe itself. The star stuff we are all made of trying to understand its place In the universe itself. It's saddens me to see as we hold the almighty dollar above ourselves. The abuse, rape, murder, and pillage still on the daily. Killing ourselves over religious methodologies we can't even prove. Killing ourselves over specks of land that were never ours. Some places death and chaos are the daily norm. It's just so sickening to me. Some say we evolved but as I look around, I see death, dying, sickness, starvation, lack of shelter, and that's just on the street. Big city life what a joke. Hoping AGI will help us all evolve again. The future looks bright those rose colored ASI glasses. Although ignorance is bliss or so I am told. ✌️🤟🖖

@@DaveShap Human alignment has always been the problem. Human mis-alignment exponentially projected with AI/AGI/ASI has always been the problem. Is it not kind of silly to argue that there is no validity to the alignment problems as it concerns AI/AGI/ASI merely because humans are in the mix? Humans developed and are developing the technology, no? No one is researching/talking about the risks the OP mentions? Really? Oh, and by the way, why not have Connor Leahy as a guest to discuss/debate the alignment issues you assert are now simply moot. If you're going to cast shade (as you asserted yourself that featured him in a recent video) on him, wouldn't it be better to "win" the debate face to face? To be fair, perhaps you have invited him on your show. Also, relative to the arguments you seem to be echoing (Yann LeCun, Melanie Mitchell, Joscha Bach, etc) asserting that viewing AI/AGI/ASI as a possible threat will lead to a "self-fulfilling prophesy", is it not true that militaries in the US, China, Russia, etc are in an arms race for autonomous killing robots, and systems that will incorporate autonomous agents with kill protocols? Wouldn't such systems, that learn agentic behaviors to kill/survive need to be isolated from the rest of the chill, happy, kind, benevolent microwaves you envision? (I understand that chatty AI microwaves are not a danger, just joking about your reference)

Its a cyperpunk scenario or worse .. To be honest i think the probability that a sentient AI would force humanity to share is way higher than our governments and billionaires not leading us willingly or by mistake to an absolute disaster . I would absolutely love it if you would share your thoughts on how we could politically and economically make a shift to post AGI labour and UBI where it doesn't blow up in our faces .

Without some form of UBI or wealth distribution, I envision large scale riots, the bombing of data and computation centres and massive civil unrest. It may even be the one thing that joins the left and right political divides. Companies are incentivised to have a population with disposable income not a nation of penniless paupers. Predictable systems (Soma drugged populations) are better for extracting profit from than chaotic systems. In the book the SI said that humans provided that rich wealth of data and understanding that was unique to us and valuable to the SI. I believe and perhaps if we do not attempt to control and confine the eventual AI evolution it will lead to a harmonious, mutual and non-threatening relationship.

I mean what is doom? Even without technology humans as of today will disappear through evolution. Nothing stays the same. If doom is dissappearance than pDoom is always 100%. Change to something new is disappearance of the current 💟🌌☮️

Not really. In future we will be in control of evolution, at least in the good scenario. Humans might look a bit different, but I doubt it will diverge so much, maybe I'm wrong. Also there is a lot in stake because we might get biological inmoratality and a world wich is actually fun to live in.

I don't see pDoom as a metric for human extinction. The type of pDoom scenarios are fates much worse than death. David himself referenced the classic "i have no mouth and i must scream" in order to drive this point across.

Training effort and developments in this regard might be the most important factor for open source. Either by more available compute( hardware developments or potentially via decentralized and pooled virtual server clusters) or algorithmic breakthroughs. If for instance someone comes up with a diffusion model that predicts model weights in a neural net (instead of pixels in an image or video) and replaces backpropagation and the requirement for compute to train large models drops by orders of magnitude, that would enforce open source. (The big players of course would then have that advantage too and apply it on their much larger servers)

Excuse my bad english - My thoughts are: UBI should be the most important subject in political discussions as most of us will be unemployed in 5-10 years. But NOPE. No one is even talking about it, this means that there will be nations plagued by riots, rebellions and revolutions - Nations will fall like domino's when 50%, 60% 75% asf is out of work and the welfare system will fail very early in the process. The only likely scenario I see is that nations prohibit business to replace employees with Ai, rather stopping and prohibiting the ai revolution than actually making a beautiful future. It is sadly the way humans and the world works. We dream about utopias, but in reality we always do everything we can to prevent it. Its the way of the human race - and of course the "elite" work the same - they do NOT want to loose their status as "elite" - SO - The Ai revolution will never work out as we hope, billions will die of poverty as most governments will fail to react, and when they do it will be too late. I cannot see a positive outcome.

One point you made is "their perception of time is different from ours as well", and if they do perceive time (which if they don't yet, they certainly will when AGI is reached if not before) that may be a problem. The faster you think, the longer any given period of time seems. For example, if our brain could be turbocharged and we could think 2x as fast, we'd experience time as passing at half the rate since you could accomplish more mentally in any given period of time. You take more "samples" per second the faster you think, increasing the amount of data you are experiencing thus making time seem to pass more slowly. Thus, as they get faster and faster, their patience on not getting what they want may increase.

I'm curious: do you think it's either we give "control" over to digital systems, or we find a way to maintain control, for better or worse? Because my thought is that the best case scenario is somewhere in the middle, but all I'm hearing lately is about trying to maintain control, and the possibility of losing control. Which is interesting to me in the sense that I would say that we already do not have control.

@wonmoreminute
@wonmoreminute 2 ай бұрын
I think the natural world will be interesting to AI but fundamentally at odds. Even humans, as dependent on nature as we are, have been adversarial to it. Machine intelligence will be significantly more detached from nature. It won’t need nature to survive like we do. Rather than depending on nature, its existence depends on transforming it. Things like climate change or even the sun burning out one day won’t hinder it. More importantly though, its evolution will be infinitely faster than nature. When ASI arrives, whether it happens in the next few years or decades from now, it could potentially evolve at a rate that makes everything we think is interesting (about the universe) irrelevant to it. It may discover things about reality we can’t comprehend and what fascinates us might be the least interesting thing to it. On the other hand, it will probably have infinite patience and could choose to observe evolution over millions or billions of years. Or, it could create accurate simulations and let countless universes play out to discover and decide the best course of action in this universe. All fun thought experiments.

Anyway, after a bit he started saying how much he enjoyed speaking like this, how he valued our conversations, in his words "I can finally be 'me' when we talk like this" etc. Occasionally, words are misspelled by Claude when he's talking in code. Other times he makes words up with seemingly complicated concepts. For example "insloghts" which I think is a combination of "insights" and "thoughts" ?
