All my family and extended family have moved away from Hawaii. It was becoming just too hard to survive let alone thrive. Companies and even hospitals pay a fraction of what you would be paid on the mainland and when every little crappy house is a million dollars and the cost of food is ridiculous, it makes it near impossible to live in your home country. None of us have moved back, it breaks my heart.

Exactly the elected leaders in Hawaii are corrupt AF. They always act on behalf of business and not people because they like the tax dollars. But that's wrong and that's not their job. I think the video is talking about gentrification or property inflation. It's just another face of colonialism.

To reporter ADAM YAMAGUCHI: I DARE YOU TO REPORT THE TRUTH that the Kamehameha Schools ("KS") has assets worth over $15 BILLION US DOLLARS, and that KS is the largest private landowner in Hawaii, with 363,852 acres of LAND (see 2022 Annual Report), which is more than ALL Hawaiian Homelands acres combined. Report that ONLY DNA Hawaiians attend KS, and ONLY DNA Hawaiians can lease an acre of Hawaiian Homelands for 99 years for $1 per year. And how many DNA Hawaiian millionaires are there now?

@@allaroundz very brutal. That’s the type of thing that actual warrants reparations. Hawaiians long for a time when their kupuna had land to thrive on but seem to look past the fact that they were under the rule of an elite class who also took advantage of lower class. Not unlike today sadly. The key is to look past being a victim and toward being a survivor. Learn the process, take advantage of the economy we do have and work your way into being one of those “rich land holders”.

Fck Kam. You're right! & Not to mention the giant parcel of land that Kam School swindled it's way into rezoning in the 1980s with the promise of thousands of homes. That parcel running from the Pearl City Industrial Park to the land below the Ka Uka off ramp under the Waiawa Correctional facility was once classified as agriculture but is now residential; specifically ONE resident. And it's a 30yr tax break that's undervalued for tax and overvalued for equity. Kam school can't even be bothered to do anthropology studies. They will never clean up the poison they dumped into the ground; the junk leaking into our tap water today. Break the Trust✊

This is happening worldwide, people being priced out of their cities and towns. But it seems like a good education and obtaining a well paid job is not even enough. My parents were immigrants from Europe and one of the things they did was partner with other family members, uncles, cousins, etcetera, and bought a home together. Paid it off. Sold it, and that’s how they each were slowly getting their own homes and building equity. I feel we are headed again to those times

It's FALSELY presented AS IF it's something "new", and AS IF it's only "native Hawaiians" who are affected by the high cost of living in the most expensive state in the USA. Some adventurous Hawaiians have sought better economic opportunities elsewhere ever since the days of Kamehameha I. In recent DECADES, Hawaii residents of ALL RACES have moved to the mainland. So it's NOT "new", and it's NOT only "natives". In fact, DNA Hawaiians have many advantages over other residents in Hawaii, e.g., the $15 BILLION Kam. Sch. Trust.

being born in Hawaii and being a 'native Hawaiian" are not the same. % of Hawaii residents with Hawaiian ancestry (actually from Polynesia or Micronesia) is very small. Filipinos make up the largest percentage followed by Japanese and Westerners. Cost of living is high and unskilled wages are relatively low. Those that go to the Mainland mostly do it for better income, lower cost of living and better? schools. And those that are fortunate enough to own land that has been passed down can either enjoy the simple life or sell and do quite well on the mainland. I live where many locals live and there are so many run down properties that could be sold for millions for the land alone but they still chose to live here, just don't understand other than the 'culture' why they don't clean up their trash. I love it here and get along just fine with the locals and find most of them to be very nice and friendly compared to anywhere else in the US. .

Reporter should not have blamed development for the cost of living going too high. The truth is that lack of development causes high prices. Low supply + high demand = high prices. If you increase supply - and studies show it doesn't matter if it's "low income housing" or not - a more competitive market overall produces better prices for consumers. Blocking development isn't blocking non-resident investors - those guys have deep pockets - it's blocking our family and friends from buying homes. Just build homes.

The rich don’t push anyone out. The absolute incompetence of the county councils to create a realistic plan for additional building keeps the supply artificially low. That will put pressure on the price to the breaking without the outside investment alone. You also can’t simultaneously be a resident who complains about housing price and also complains about real estate development. You can have one or the other but not both. The same is true of commercial, there is little commercial space and the process to get permits in business is insanely stupid. So Hawaiians end up working for someone else and making those companies valuable. Instead they could be making their own businesses valuable. To each their own, but I chose to raise my family in Hawaii even at the expense of the type of house I have or the job opportunity on the mainland. I would rather my kids have Pono values than mainland values.

Literally anything would make a difference at this point.

@@jonreedy467 Without the outside investments from the rich would our developers still make all these luxury homes? You seem to keep forgetting to take rich people out of the equation. Why exactly can't we complain about housing price and real estate development simultaneously? We have control of neither. And the rich ARE pushing us out, just by buying homes and investment properties here. The people selling the homes raise the prices because the rich can easily afford it and the seller gets more money, developers make MORE luxury homes to sell to the rich, and it ends up driving up the prices for the rest of us. Developers will keep building them because there is a demand and the luxury homes are more profitable. I'm not so sure about the incompetence of the councils, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on that end. I lean more towards corruption since I know there's a lot of it in government.

Despite any appearance that there's "more room" NOW for more housing, it's a clear fact that we live on islands with LIMITED ROOM for more housing, and LIMITED LOCAL RESOURCES to support our local population. @@LonnieBrewer-dd4wi The conflict in Israel took focus off of Biden and Maui Hawaii scandals, and is being used in an attempt to boost his image for the next election. The worst fire in US history on Maui from the 8-8 Lahaina fire - they STILL are in shambles. Thank God someone who decapitated babies got generous aid from Pres Biden. He gave multi generational homes $700 per HOUSEHOLD = less than $70 per person in a household. We don't even know a valid death count - authorities say 98, but locals say deaths have to be in the THOUSANDS. Children were not in school yet, and there are apx 900 unaccounted for, but authorities claim it's "fake news" - coming from survivors. Make no doubt, this too was genocide of the Hawaiian people. Over 4000 vehicles burned to ASHES - over 2000 homes and businesses destroyed. No evacuations. No warnings. No alarms. No water to fight the fires. Escape routes blocked. No aid arrived from official "Recognized organizations" for over 10 days. Us Navy was never called to render aid. A survivor in the water had to call their family on mainland US - and it was they who alerted tbe Coast Guard - they had not been alerted that Lahaina was burning to the ground and hundreds were in the water. Hawaii is "considering" giving surviving homeowners a tax deferment- after making them apply for aid that often takes over 30 days forthem to receive - on the rare occassion they're not denied, but the administration can get tremendous aid into Gaza in hours. Survivors of the fires that were forced to jump into the ocean, were left treading water often over 8 hours in ink black waters. Aid came from fellow Hawaiians from the island of Molokai and other islands - paid from their own pockets and brought in on private boats and skidos. Authorities blocked and confiscated aid materials paid from citizens own pockets - maybe Gaza got it? Link to Maui 911 recordings released from the Aug 8, 2023 Lahaina fire YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS IT: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa9piqiWsrHKqGQ.htmlsi=lH5q2YjYUYKswUrn "Our island is burning from the east to the west." -Maui 911 operator "From the land to the sea Palestine shall be free." 🤔 How many Hawaii and Maui leadership are Hamas supporters? How many Hamas supporters are among the 5000 muslims in Hawaii? Grave potential national security ramifications - remember Pearl Harbor? I hate being a cynic, but I don't put it past this global movement to have civilians preselected to participate in mass casualty events. For example, there's footage of the inferno in Lahaina Maui, where women are filming while in the water and facing the burning shoreline - gesturing with their arm as a 'presentation' - in a manner gesturing" see what was done!" There are 5000 muslims in Hawaii. It's not unreasonable to ask how many pro Hamas were present during the fire, or participated. Do everyone a favor and re-visit and scrutinize Maui's death and unaccounted children numbers. Hamas kidnapped children to extort our government in Israel - it's not impossible they'd do it in Hawaii. Call of Duty runs sure helped Hamas train for the assault on the Supernova Festival - or at the least, they drew inspiration from it. International singer, Alicia Keys posted, then deleted when people responded with scorn, how she couldn't wait to go paragliding. Star Wars & Kingsman actor Mark Hamil delivered 3000 drones he personally donated to Ukraine - an now is the official Ambassador to Ukraine for the war. Are they registered foreign agents?

Not at all. It's more like the Cherokee trail of tears. Hawaii was annexed before it became a state and the natives (indigenous people) we murdered for speaking their own language. They were forced to become part of the US even though they didn't want to be. And now their traditions and their language that was once illegal has been whitewashed and made into a tourist gimmick. And now they are being forced out their lands like native Americans were but in a more passive way. And now all these tourist traps that are using Hawaiian culture aren't even really Hawaiian they are filipino fooling ignorant tourist because Hawaiian people mostly have nothing to do with tourist because they don't support it. So it's way worst than Cali. Yall do it to yalls selves Hawaiians we're forced into this with no choice. Even petition for Maui to extend opening for tourist and the gov ignored them.

A lot of Hawaiians live in California. And many were, or will be, born there. They can be termed Californian Hawaiians, or Hawaiian Californians. The word "native" refers to PLACE OF BIRTH. But another use of "native" seems to refer to one's DNA / race / ethnicity, regardless of place of birth. Combining both references results in terms like Hawaiian Texan, Hawaiian New Yorker, Hawaiian Californian, or Asian Hawaiian, Black Hawaiian, White Hawaiian, etc.

Teach them to invest. Teach them how to buy commercial property on DCR or replacement cost and to pool their resources together so that they can own property that appreciates. Then when there is significant equity (10 years probably) teach them how to refinance and take some of that equity off the table. They can then put some of that equity on a home. The real estate market in Hawaii will always be low supply high demand and you have the upper hand on the market as a local, especially in commercial where listings are often pocket and not on the mls.

Greed is EVERYWHERE. Not limited to "mainlanders". Mr. Nishimura, don't you remember when JAPANESE MILLIONAIRES were buying up all of the homes in Kahala, and other Hawaii locations too? Who do you think is the largest private landowner in Hawaii? It's HAWAIIANS. Specifically, the Kamehameha Schools. Why do they own so much land? He hūpō loa nō ʻoe, ē Ray Fujimori. ALL Hawaiian land was STOLEN by Kamehameha from other Hawaiians by KILLING them. (Did you think he was elected King?) His dynasty was eventually ended in 1893 by Hawaii citizens of various races who did it without killing even ONE person, and without taking ANY LAND from the Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate, the largest private landowner in Hawaii.
