Ever wondered why Washington DC is the capital of the United States, or Ottawa the capital of Canada, or why Ankara is the capital of Turkey? Well, probably not, since not that many people might immediately know that, but still, it's pretty interesting to learn about, I promise!
Also, yes, I'm still working on the audio thing. I think I really just need to work with the microphone better.

In Australia after federation in 1901, there was Sydney and Melbourne that tried to compete for the capital until they decided to make the National Capital half way between the two major Australian Cities.
@AndoCommando1000
@AndoCommando1000 6 ай бұрын
Yep. But even then, Canberra is not halfway between. This is because the compromise within the compromise was: Because Melbourne was allowed to be the TEMPORARY capital UNTIL the official capital city was founded, the end location would be able to be geographically closer to Sydney. This means that Sydney has always had more economic, political and financial clout than Melbourne. Even if Melbourne were to become bigger than Sydney again, Sydney would STILL be more influential in Australia than Melbourne.

New Zealand moved capital twice and for two different reasons. The first capital was at (Old) Russell where the first Governor-General had resident and was close proximity to the 'birthplace of New Zealand". A year later, they moved the capital in Auckland due to better port/land compared with the isolated Russell. Also they pretty much got land gifted to them by the natives in order to help increase trade in the once small town; from where Auckland is now, i'd say it was a massive success. After over two decades, they decided to move the capital again, this time in Port Nicholson or Wellington as known today. The move was due to the government worried that the then more populous and mineral-rich South Island was going to secede and form their own colony. So they packed their bags and moved closer, hence why the Capital is right bang in the middle of the country; able to govern both North and South Island (+Stewart, Chatham and the rest of the NZ Realm)

@@a.hakan.yildiz In 1800 The Hague was a little town. King Napoleon and his wife came from Paris. His wife was used to be live in luxury and the grandeur of Paris. Also she complained about the little palace in The Hague. In Amsterdam there was a big city hall. King Napoleon converted it in a Royal Palace so he and his spoiled wife could live there. From then Napoleon made Amsterdam the capital. Eventually his wife couldn't live in The Netherlands and she went back to Paris. After Napoleon was defeated the new King of Holland, kept Amsterdam the capital city. But still today the government, parliament, ministry buildings, embassies and the Royal Dutch family are situated/living in The Hague. Fun fact is that Holland was the first republic (1581) in Europe. After Napoleon invaded Holland, he made his brother King of Holland. Since then The Netherlands is still a monarchy.

In 5:02 having the Philippines on that map is misleading. Yes Quezon City is larger than our capital, Manila but both of them are part of one urban area called Metro Manila. That's like Brooklyn being the capital and Manhattan being the largest city. One reason why Manila is so terribly planned is cuz it's technically 16 cities, not one, drawn on 19th century borders; so there is no cohesion, and lawmakers won't want to incorporate it into one since they're from prominent political dynasties with positions from those cities.

Ivorocious Manila was, is and always will be the inseparable capital of Filipino history and culture, tho. That’s actually why they switched the capital back to Manila from QC in the 70s.
@thwb4661
@thwb4661 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, it wasn't misleading, that actually happened. Cebu was the Philippines' first capital, not Manila. Manila only became capital due to Miguel Lopez de Legazpi insisting it to be the Philippine capital in the late 1500s. In the 1900s, Quezon City was actually built to replace Manila as the Philippine Capital, and Quezon City eventually replaced Manila right after the WW2, from 1948 and lasted for 28 years until 1976 when Manila took its status as the city capital back from Quezon City. That's the reason why the President lives in Manila while the Congress and the Senate is located in Batasan Hills in Quezon City. And that's the reason why most government offices such as DENR, COA, DOST, etc. are found in Quezon City, while some are still in Manila, such as the Supreme Court. It wasn't until the 1970s that Manila became capital again and the NCR was formed to become a centralized region. Also, Manila City is different to Metro Manila, Manila City is the city, while Metro Manila was the successor of the Province of Manila. It's not terribly planned, but it's governed terribly because the US dissolved the Province of Manila and made Manila City like DC, an independent city, as well as other surrounding cities that made up today's Metro Manila. That's why Metro Manila is a region and not a province because the cities within Metro Manila are all independent cities/charter cities.

It's probably worth noting that there's a flaw in the logic of "Put the capital where most of the people are". Well, there are a few, but the big one is that, in most countries, most people don't live in the biggest cities. (Unless you count suburbs and whatnot as being in the biggest cities.) There are some exceptions, such as Iceland (aka Reykjavik and some tundra), but in general it's not common for any single city to hold a significant percentage of the nation's entire population.

Well, you SHOULD include the suburbs. Because that's the extent of a city's influence, people commute, business transactions are carried out and urban planning is done for the entire metropolitan area. For example, it's misleading to say that Sydney only has 208,000 people, when the metropolitan region is more than 4.8 million people and accounts for 19.3% of Australia's population. And another example is London - 8.5 million in the Greater London region, but about 14 million in the wider metropolitan area.

When Florida was acquired as a US territory, there was almost no settlement in most of the peninsula, and the two largest cities were Pensacola, at the western end of the Panhandle near the border with Alabama, and Jacksonville, near the Atlantic coast, separated by a nearly east-west line. So they built a town halfway between those cities, named it Tallahassee, and made it the capital. And today, when the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and the I-4 corridor have most of the population, and Orlando would be the most logical choice, Tallahassee is STILL the state capital!

The Revolution China was supposed to be Nanjing but the communists moved it to Beijing because they had more control there. Mumbai was always more populous and more important than Delhi during colonial eras but the chose Delhi more due to history and eventually it grew bigger.

Malaysia moved its administrative departments and judiciary to a new city called Putrajaya because the capital was getting too congested. However Kuala Lumpur is still the capital since the parliament and king remained there. But for most of us we consider Putrajaya like a de facto capital since that's where we go for government matters; also the prime minister lives and works there.

@@_TehTJ_ Yeah actually like that. What happened in Metro Manila was the ancient towns were geographically close with each other but still isolated due to the large population of Mangrove trees in the area. What happened is ancient towns becoming their own cities instead of merging into one. Also, interestingly, Metro Manila holds the record for the most densely packed region in the world.

As a New Yorker I can say that specialization in a city’s economy is a good thing, and hence creating a capital city where the main economy revolves around politics and government is good in it’s own sense, so I’m glad that NYC is simply the financial capital of the nation, much like LA is the entertainment capital or Houston’s petroleum based economy. I’m glad that the gubernatorial and political economies were shifted to another city, as that helps each city focus on what they’re good at, and it at least attempts to avoid overcrowding of cities.

Btw, in Portuguese not all Rs are pronounced like an H. Rs are only pronounced like that if it’s the first letter of the word or if there are two next to each other. Like the Rs “Rio” and “Terra” make H sounds but in words like “Janeiro” and “carta” they make R sounds.

The main reason why capitals are not the country’s largest city is due to public interest. A capital that is located in a city would be more incentivized to improve and promote the interest of city folks, isolating the more sparsely populated, yet crucial suburban and rural population from the government, creating a sense of inherent distrust and socioeconomic separation in terms of public interest. Therefore, capitals are often established in neutral, planned and developed sections of the the county from scratch to stimulate the local economy in the region and to bridge both the urban and non-urban populace via compromise as mentioned in the video.
